Appari ons of Our Lady: Our Lady of Fa ma “I want a chapel built here in my honor. I want you

to continue saying the Rosary every day. The war will end soon, and the soldiers will return to their homes,” Our Lady again responded when Lucia asked what she wanted of her on October 13, 1917. It had rained all night before, and the crowds had gathered again for the noon apparition of Our Lady. “Will you tell me your name?” Mary finally responded: “I am the Lady of the Rosary.” Lucia told Our Lady of the many petitions that she had from people. “Some I shall grant, and others I must deny. People must amend their lives and ask pardon for their sins. They must not offend our Lord any more, for He is already too much offended!”

Our Lady said there was nothing more she asked of Lucia, and then made her departure. Lucia shouted, “Look at the sun!”

When the crowd of 70,000 looked up, they saw the dark storm clouds, which had been completely blocking the sun. The sun came through them as a spinning disk and moved in a way that has since been called “the dancing sun of Fatima.” The 70,000 were all able to stare out the sun during its dance without their eyes hurting or any damage to them at all, even though it was not obscured at all by any clouds or fog. They saw the sun crash towards the earth and then rise back up into the sky. When it stopped, everyone realized that, despite having been soaked from the rain and mud, they were suddenly completely dry.

Lucia said she and the other two children saw something different than the crowd. Beside the sun, they saw Our Lady with St. Joseph and the child Jesus, and the latter two blessed the world by tracing the sign of the cross upon it. This apparition gave way to one of Our Lord and Our Lady (appearing as Our Lady of Sorrows), and Our Lord blessed the world again. This apparition too gave way to Our Lady appearing as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

This final apparition soon stopped, and so did the monthly appearances of Our Lady. Our Lady appeared once more in 1920 to Lucia to encourage her to consecrate herself to Our Lord, after which Lucia entered the Carmel herself. The message was confirmed by the miracle of the sun: pray the rosary and convert from your sin.

Second Sunday of Lent "Lord, it is good that we are here," says Peter to Jesus. Amen. We begin this second week of Lent here at the liturgy, in word and sacrament. It is truly good that we are here. And yet, as we see in today's Gospel account of the Transfiguration, Peter isn't quite sure what to do up there on that mountain. He knows it's good to accompany Jesus; at the same time, he feels confused and afraid. Perhaps Abram experienced something similar when God commanded him to uproot himself from his ancestral home and strike out for a new land of God's choosing. In this Lenten season, we know how good it is to be with God. Yet we struggle with our own doubts and fears. Our second reading encourages us to persevere in trust: "Bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God."

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

The Old Testament reading and the Gospel provide two examples of God speaking in plain words that God's listeners can understand. In Genesis, Abram hears God tell him to leave his family's land. God makes majestic declarations about Abram's future and promises to lead him to a new home. Without comment, Abram picks up and goes "as the LORD directed him." God speaks; Abram listens and obeys. In the Gospel, God's voice booms from a shining cloud: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." Peter, James, and John hear God's words loud and clear, and the experience overwhelms them. But how often do we hear God's voice so distinctly? While we admire the religious experiences of Abram and of Jesus' disciples, we might be tempted to think that they have it easy. We imagine that we too would obey God's direct orders, if only we could hear them as unmistakably as Abram did. We suspect it would be irresistible to live as modern disciples if glowing clouds hovered above our heads and revealed divine truths. Saint Paul's Letter to Timothy proposes another way.

Saint Paul reminds us that God has "saved us and called us to a holy life." God never forgets about us, but knew before the creation of the world exactly when, where, and how we would live out our faith. God's wondrous plan includes visions and voices for some. For the rest of us, we rely on the Word of God and its witnesses who testify that Jesus truly lived on earth among us and sacrificed his life for our salvation. Jesus and his Church are all the revelation we need. We draw close to him in word and sacrament, in prayer, in service to others, and in countless acts of sacrifice each day this Lent. We ask the Lord to help us trust, with all our hearts, that God will always provide exactly what we need. March 12, 2017 - 2nd Sunday of Lent “Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your fa-ther’s house to a land that I will show you.” Genesis 12:1 God calls all of us to leave behind our old ways and to follow Him, placing our complete trust in Him. Some of the old ways that we may have to struggle to leave behind might be materialism, selfishness and greed. Yet God promises to show us a new land and a better way to live.

Instructional League Umpire Sign-Ups Instructional baseball/softball umpire sign-ups for all current 6th and 7th grade St. Simon students and St. Simon PSR students are now open. In your email, please provide name, phone #, appropriate email address for future communications, and current grade. There will be a brief umpire training meeting sometime in mid April. Archbishop Robert J. Carlson will preside at a prayer service for spiritual healing for survivors of physical, sexual or emotional abuse on Tuesday, March 28, at 7:00 pm, at St. Simon the Apostle Catholic Church. Family members and friends of abuse survivors are encouraged to attend, as well as those who are involved in helping abused people, who work to prevent abuse, and who want to pray for healing and reconciliation.

Case for Smiles Sewing Session at St. Simon

The Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary is once again hosting a Sewing Session. The organization, Case for Smiles, was formerly known as ConKerr Cancer. We will still be sewing pillow cases for children going through treatments at area children’s hospitals. No sewing skills are needed as there are many tasks that do not involve sewing (and some that do!). This fun event is happening on Tuesday, March 21st from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm in the Lower Church Hall. You do not have to stay the entire time. You can come and help as long as you want; you may have so much fun, you won’t want to leave! We welcome anyone who wants to come and have fun while helping children with cancer and other long term illnesses. All parishioners (and their friends, family and neighbors) are invited to join us in making brightly colored pillow cases for children in the hospital going through chemo treatments. This event is not limited to adults. If anyone has any questions, call Diane at 845-8442. See you on March 21st !

Volunteer below to: Sort donated items, organize the store and unload cars/vans with donations. The Restore is a location that houses the donated items for the home building projects. We are on the waiting list for a future build as well!

Come dressed to work! Closed–toe and closed-heel shoes are required. Wear clothing, and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty in. Feel free to bring work gloves otherwise they will have everything else you need to get the job done.

Bring a refillable water bottle. HFHSL provides water, however they do not provide individual cups or bottles. Volunteers MUST be over 16 years of age. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Monetary donations are available. If this is a better option for you, please make your checks payable to St. Simon, and drop off or mail to the church office at 11011 Mueller Rd, 63123. Please note "Community Outreach" on your envelope and in the memo line. You can also now donate through the Online Giving button on our parish website @ www.stsimonchurch.org. St Simon the Apostle Second Sunday of Lent March 12, 2017

The Catholic Youth Apostolate is pleased to announce that the Fr. William Scheid Players will open their 38th

season with the madcap comedy, You Can’t Take It With You!

This year’s cast features six priests from the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Msgr. John Borcic, Fr. Terry Borgerding, Fr. John Brennell, Msgr. Norb Ernst, and Fr. Ryan Weber, and Fr. Bill Wigand, along with talented adult performers from the Archdiocese. Performance dates are:

Friday, March 24 at 7:30 pm Saturday, March 25 at 7:30 pm Sunday, March 26 at 2:00 pm

All performances will be at Incarnate Word Academy, 2788 Normandy Drive, St. Louis, MO 63121. Advanced tickets are $12 for reserved seating. Tickets are also available at the door for $15.
