Over the course of nine nights, a man and a woman representing Joseph and Mary travel to neighborhood homes, bringing to life the search for a place for Mary to give birth. They, and the crowd following them, sing hymns and carry candles. It is only the third house of the evening that finally lets them in. At that point, a celebration begins, often including praying the rosary. In Germany and some Eastern European countries there is a similar custom, and each of these last nine nights leading up to Christmas is marked with a procession carrying an image of either Mary or Joseph from house to house. The message in both traditions is clear: are you going to receive Jesus, the Son of God, into your heart and into your family, or are you too busy, too distracted, too hardened…? Whatever our tradition or ways of expressing our faith, it is important during these last days of Advent to re- new our commitment to prayer, so that we may not yield to the consumerism and the secular wishy-washy slo- gans trying to snatch from our souls the true reason for our hope: God does not forget his people, and He him- self comes to save us.

GAUDETE IN DOMINO SEMPER (REJOICE IN THE LORD ALWAYS)

The third week of Advent begins with Gaudete Sunday. “Gaudete”, meaning rejoice, is the first word of the opening antiphon for the Mass of this day: Gaudete in Domino semper (rejoice in the Lord always). The joy of Gaudete Sunday shows in the use of rose as the liturgical color –for example, in the Advent wreath and the priest’s vestments. We rejoice because our Lord and Savior is coming soon, very soon, to save us. He is our hope.

The days before Christmas are marked by a heightened sense of prayer. Novenas and other ancient ways of preparation are used throughout the Catholic world, sometimes taking on creative and community-wide di-mensions.

From December 17 to 23, the “O Antiphons” are chanted during Vespers (evening prayer) in the Liturgy of the Hours. The titles of Jesus used in the antiphons are all titles of the Messiah, rooted in the prophecies of Isaiah. Easily incorporated into individual or family prayer, they are the most unique of the Church’s prayers during these days.

Dec 17: O Sapientia (O Wisdom) Dec 18: O Adonai (O Lord) Dec 19: O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse) Dec 20: O Clavis David (O Key of David) Dec 21: O Oriens (O Morning Star) Dec 22: O Rex Gentium (O King of the Nations) Dec 23: O Emmanuel (O Emmanuel – God with us)

From the 16th to the 24th there also is the Latin American tradition of Las Posadas (meaning The Inns), which dramatizes the hope and expectation of Advent in a popular way.

Whatever our tradition or ways of expressing our faith, it is important during these last days of Advent to re-new our commitment to prayer, so that we may not yield to the consumerism and the secular wishy-washy slo-gans trying to snatch from our souls the true reason for our hope: God does not forget his people, and He him-self comes to save us.

THE PATH TO THE NEW EVANGELIZATION

DONATIONS NEEDED FOR THE NEW TABERNACLE!!!

Previously everyone was informed that our Tabernacle was broken in to on Halloween night. In order to better protect Christ in the Eucharist Father Jorge has decided to get a new tabernacle. We are asking for donations to help cover the expenses of getting the tabernacle set up; which requires a new stand to put the tabernacle on that cannot be cut through.

If you would wish to help in our goal to set up a new tabernacle that can better protect Christ in the tabernacle please write a check to St. Pius and in the memo line fill in “Capital Need”. Thank you

EUCHARISTIC MINISTER TRAINING

December 14th at 7:00 pm is the date for training new extraordinary ministers of holy communion.

First Reading — Shout for joy! Sing joyfully! Be glad and exult! The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior (Zephaniah 3:14-18a). Psalm — Cry out with joy and gladness: for among you is the great and Holy One of Israel (Isaiah 12). Second Reading — Rejoice! The Lord is near. Make your requests known to God (Philippians 4:4-7). Gospel — John tells his hearers to share their possessions with the needy; be honest; do not threaten or accuse oth-ers falsely (Luke 3:10-18).

Monday: Nm 24:2-7, 15-17a; Ps 25:4-5ab, 6, 7bc-9; Mt 21:23-27 Tuesday: Zep 3:1-2, 9-13; Ps 34:2-3, 6-7, 17-19, 23; Mt 21:28-32 Wednesday: Is 45:6b-8, 18, 21b-25; Ps 85:9-14; Lk 7:18b-23 Thursday: Gn 49:2, 8-10; Ps 72:1-4ab, 7-8, 17; Mt 1:1-17 Friday: Jer 23:5-8; Ps 72:1-2, 12-13, 18-19; Mt 1:18-25 Saturday: Jgs 13:2-7, 24-25a; Ps 71:3-4a, 5-6ab, 16-17; Lk 1:5-25 Sunday: Mi 5:1-4a; Ps 80:2-3, 15-16, 18-19; Heb 10:5-10; Lk 1:39-45

“A sense of deep communion with the rest of nature can-not be real if our hearts lack tenderness, compassion and concern for our fellow human beings. It is clearly incon-sistent to combat trafficking in endangered species while remaining completely indifferent to human trafficking, unconcerned about the poor, or undertaking to destroy another human being deemed unwanted. This compromis-es the very meaning of our struggle for the sake of the environment. It is no coincidence that, in the canticle in which Saint Francis praises God for his creatures, he goes on to say: “Praised be you my Lord, through those who give pardon for your love”. Everything is connected. Con-cern for the environment thus needs to be joined to a sin-cere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment to resolving the problems of society.”

Pope Francis, Laudatio Si, no. 120

We can no longer be Catholics by chance, but instead

be Catholics by conviction and action.

SOCIAL MINISTRIES

GIFT COLLECTION

The gifts for our Christmas Baskets for Low Income Families begins with you all taking tags off of our Gifting Tree. Gift tags will be available for all of you to take. These tags represent items to buy for the children who will be on our Christmas Basket list. After today, please take a tag (or 2 or 3) from the Gifting Tree and purchase that item. Please bring the tag and the item back to the Narthex or the par-ish office unwrapped no later than Sunday, December 13th.

FLEECE NAVIDAD SWEATSUITS FOR SENIORS

Once again, we are asking parishioners to purchase a new sweatsuit for a Senior this Christmas. These are older folks who live in local Care facilities, but have no family or friends nearby. To be part of this program, please call the Parish Office and you will be assigned the name and size of a Senior. You will have the option of taking the gift to the Senior yourself or arrange for the parish staff to deliver it.

Each year, a number of our parishioner families have adopted struggling families in the north Aurora and helped them out at Christmas time. If you would like to be a part of this project, we can find you a family in the community that needs some help with food and gifts for X-mas. We only ask that your assistance be equivalent to a gift or two for each family member and that you provide at least one week’s worth of food. You have the option of arranging your gift with the family directly or having us be intermediaries – your choice.

To Adopt a Family at Christmas, call the parish office

HELP DECORATE THE CHURCH DECEMBER 22nd

MEMORY TABLE

We would like to thank everyone for sharing pictures of their deceased loved ones with us during the month of November. If you haven’t picked those up yet, please remember to get them this weekend. You will find them in the back of the Narthex. Thank you.

December 18th Distribution Night

Friday, December 18th is our night to make up and distribute our Christmas Baskets. We have 60-65 baskets to deliver in the north Aurora area so we need your help. Bring the kids, bring the cousins because they can all help. What a great way to in-volve your kids in a project that embodies the true spirit of Christmas!

We start working at 6:15 PM in the church basement. Cookies and hot drinks provided.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP WRAP PRESENTS

DECEMBER 13

.We need people to help us sort and wrap the toys and gifts for our annual Christmas Basket Project. It is a big job as we have gifts for some 60-65 families. If you would like to help, we will start sorting gifts in the church basement at noon on Sunday, December 13, and start wrapping at 2 p.m. and work until about 5-6 p.m. Come for the whole time or for just a few hours.
