Parents of children to be baptized must attend two classes of prepara-tion. Godparents need only attend the first class. Godparents must be practicing Catholics who have received Confirmation. If you do not live in this parish, you must obtain a letter of permission from your own parish to baptize your child at St. Peter Chanel. The liturgical year is coming to a close and in the holy sacrifice of the altar we renew the offering of the victim to the Father — the offering of Christ, the king of justice, love and peace, as we shall read shortly in the pref-ace. You all experience a great joy in your souls as you consider the sacred humanity of our Lord.

He is a king with a heart of flesh, like yours; he is the author of the universe and of every creature, but he does not lord it over us. He begs us to give him a little love, as he silently shows us his wounds. Why then do so many people not know him? Why do we still hear that cruel protest: "We do not want this man to reign over us"? There are millions of people in the world who reject Jesus Christ in this way; or rather they reject his shadow, for they do not know Christ. They have not seen the beauty of his face, they do not realize how won-derful his teaching is. This sad state of affairs makes me want to atone to our Lord. When I hear that endless clam-our — expressed more in ignoble actions than in words — I feel the need to cry out, "He must reign!" Many people will not accept that Christ should reign. They oppose him in thousands of ways: in their attitude toward their circumstances, in their approach to human society, in morality, in science and the arts. Even in the Church itself! "I am not referring," says St Augustine, "to those scoundrels who blaspheme against Christ with their tongues. There are very many who blaspheme against him through their own conduct." Some people are even annoyed by the expression "Christ the king." They take naive objection to the word, as if Christ's kingship could be thought of in political terms. Or they refuse to admit that Christ is king, because that would involve accepting his law. And law they will not accept, not even the wonderful precept of charity, for they do not want to reach out to God's love. Their ambi-tion is to serve their own selfishness. For many years now, our Lord has urged me to repeat a silent cry, Serviam: "I will serve!" Let us ask him to strengthen our desire to give ourselves, to be faithful to his calling — with naturalness, without fuss or noise — in the middle of everyday life. Let us thank him from the depth of our heart. We will pray to him as his subjects, as his sons! And our mouth will be filled with milk and hon-ey. We will find great pleasure in speaking of the king-dom of God, a kingdom of freedom, a freedom he has won for us.

Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe Our annual celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe will take place on Sunday, December 10th. The procession will begin at 9:15 am in front of the city hall.

Food Sale: The Guadalupe Festival is an important fund-raiser for our parish. We will have a variety of food for sale to help raise funds for the CCD Program.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass On Tuesday, December 12th, the actual feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, Mass will be celebrated at 5:00 a.m., followed by the singing of the mañanitas. Masses will be celebrated in both the old and new churches.

CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE Please donate to our Christmas toy drive. A monetary con-tribution is preferred since we buy toys at wholesale. Please make checks payable to “St. Peter Chanel”. You may leave your check or unwrapped new toy (s) at the par-ish office any day of the week from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Deadline: Wednesday, December 20, 2017.

Termina el año litúrgico, y en el Santo Sacrificio del Altar renova-mos al Padre el ofrecimiento de la Víctima, Cristo, Rey de santidad y de gracia, rey de justicia, de amor y de paz, como leeremos dentro de poco en el Prefacio. Todos percibís en vuestras almas una alegría in-mensa, al considerar la santa Hu-manidad de Nuestro Señor: un Rey

con corazón de carne, como el nuestro; que es autor del universo y de cada una de las criaturas, y que no se impone dominando: mendiga un poco de amor, mostrándonos, en silencio, sus manos llagadas. ¿Por qué, entonces, tantos lo ignoran? ¿Por qué se oye aún esa protesta cruel: nolumus hunc regnare super nos, no queremos que éste reine sobre nosotros? En la tierra hay millones de hombres que se encaran así con Jesucristo o, mejor dicho, con la sombra de Jesucristo, porque a Cristo no lo conocen, ni han visto la belleza de su rostro, ni saben la maravilla de su doctrina. Ante ese triste espectáculo, me siento inclinado a desagra-viar al Señor. Al escuchar ese clamor que no cesa y que, más que de voces, está hecho de obras poco nobles, experi-mento la necesidad de gritar alto: oportet illum regnare!, conviene que El reine. Muchos no soportan que Cristo reine; se oponen a El de mil formas: en los diseños generales del mundo y de la convivencia humana; en las costumbres, en la ciencia, en el arte. ¡Hasta en la misma vida de la Iglesia! Yo no hablo —escribe S. Agustín— de los malvados que blasfeman de Cristo. Son raros, en efecto, los que lo blasfeman con la lengua, pero son muchos los que lo blasfeman con la pro-pia conducta. A algunos les molesta incluso la expresión Cristo Rey: por una superficial cuestión de palabras, como si el reinado de Cristo pudiese confundirse con fórmulas políticas; o por-que, la confesión de la realeza del Señor, les llevaría a ad-mitir una ley. Y no toleran la ley, ni siquiera la del precep-to entrañable de la caridad, porque no desean acercarse al amor de Dios: ambicionan sólo servir al propio egoísmo. El Señor me ha empujado a repetir, desde hace mucho tiempo, un grito callado: serviam!, serviré. Que Él nos au-mente esos afanes de entrega, de fidelidad a su divina lla-mada —con naturalidad, sin aparato, sin ruido—, en medio de la calle. Démosle gracias desde el fondo del corazón. Dirijámosle una oración de súbditos, ¡de hijos!, y la lengua y el paladar se nos llenarán de leche y de miel, nos sabrá a panal tratar del Reino de Dios, que es un Reino de libertad, de la libertad que Él nos ganó.
