Finding Peace in the Heart of Christ by St. Josemaria Escriva

God our Father has seen fit to grant us, in the heart of his Son, “infinite treasures of love,” mercy and affection. If we want to find evidence that God loves us — that he not only listens to our prayers but an-ticipates them — we need only follow the same line of thought as St Paul: “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, will he not also give us all things in him?” Grace renews a man from within and converts a sin-ner and rebel into a good and faithful servant. The source of all grace is God’s love for us, and he has revealed this not just in words but also in deeds. It was divine love which led the second Person of the holy Trinity, the Word, the Son of God the Father, to take on our flesh, our human condition, everything except sin. And the Word, the Word of God, is the Word from which Love proceeds. Love is revealed to us in the incarnation, the re-demptive journey which Jesus Christ made on our earth, culminating in the supreme sacrifice of the cross. And on the cross it showed itself through a new sign: “One of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and wa-ter.” This water and blood of Jesus speak to us of a self-sacrifice brought to the last extreme: “It is fin-ished” — everything is achieved, for the sake of love. Today when we consider once more the central mys-teries of our faith, we are surprised to see how very human gestures are used to express the deepest truths: the love of God the Father who gives up his Son, and the Son’s love which calmly leads him to Calvary. God does not approach us in power and au-thority. No, he “takes the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of man.” Jesus is never distant or aloof. although sometimes in his preaching he seems very sad, because he is hurt by the evil men

do. However, if we watch him closely, we will note immediately that his anger comes from love. It is a further invitation for us to leave infidelity and sin be-hind. “Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, says the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live?” These words explain Christ’s whole life. They allow us to understand why he has come to us with a heart made of flesh, a heart like ours. This is a convincing proof of his love and a con-stant witness to the mystery of divine charity. I must confide to you something which makes me very sorry and spurs me on to action: the thought of all those people who do not yet know Christ, who do not even suspect the great good fortune which awaits us in heaven. They live like blind men looking for a joy whose real name they don’t know, lost on roads which take them away from true happiness. How well one understands what Paul the Apostle must have felt that night in Troas when he had a vision in a dream: “A man of Macedonia was standing beseeching him and saying Come over to Macedonia and help us. And when he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on to Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.” Don’t you also feel that God is calling us? Through the things which happen around us he is urging us to proclaim the good news of the coming of Jesus. Yet sometimes we Christians turn our calling into some-thing very paltry. We become superficial and waste our time in dissension and jealousy. Or, worse still, some people are artificially scandalized by the way others choose to live certain aspects of the faith. In-stead of doing all they can to help others, they set out to destroy and criticise. It is true that sometimes you find serious shortcomings in Christians’ lives. But the important thing is not ourselves and our shortcomings. The only thing that matters is Jesus. It is Christ we must talk about, not ourselves. These reflections have been provoked by suggestions that there is a crisis in devotion to the sacred heart of Jesus. But there is no crisis. True devotion to the Sa-cred Heart has always been and is still truly alive, full of human and supernatural meaning. It has led and still leads to conversion, self-giving, fulfilment of God’s will and a loving understanding of the myster-ies of the redemption. However, we must distinguish this genuine devotion from displays of useless sentimentality, a veneer of piety devoid of doctrine.

El Corazón de Cristo, paz de los cristianos por San Josemaría Escrivá

¡Dios Padre se ha dignado concedernos, en el Cora-zón de su Hijo, infinitos dilectionis thesauros , teso-ros inagotables de amor, de misericordia, de cariño. Si queremos descubrir la evidencia de que Dios nos ama –de que no sólo escucha nuestras oraciones, sino que se nos adelanta–, nos basta seguir el mismo razonamiento de San Pablo: El que ni a su propio Hijo perdonó, sino que le entregó a la muerte por todos nosotros, ¿cómo no nos dará con El todas las cosas? . La gracia renueva al hombre desde dentro, y le con-vierte –de pecador y rebelde– en siervo bueno y fiel. Y la fuente de todas las gracias es el amor que Dios nos tiene y que nos ha revelado, no exclusivamente con las palabras: también con los hechos. El amor divino hace que la segunda Persona de la Santísima Trinidad, el Verbo, el Hijo de Dios Padre, tome nuestra carne, es decir, nuestra condición humana, menos el pecado. Y el Verbo, la Palabra de Dios es Verbum spirans amorem, la Palabra de la que proce-de el Amor . El amor se nos revela en la Encarnación, en ese an-dar redentor de Jesucristo por nuestra tierra, hasta el sacrificio supremo de la Cruz. Y, en la Cruz, se ma-nifiesta con un nuevo signo: uno de los soldados abrió a Jesús el costado con una lanza, y al instante salió sangre y agua. Agua y sangre de Jesús que nos hablan de una entrega realizada hasta el último ex-tremo, hasta el consummatum est , el todo está con-sumado, por amor. En la fiesta de hoy, al considerar una vez más los misterios centrales de nuestra fe, nos maravillamos de cómo las realidades más hondas –ese amor de Dios Padre que entrega a su Hijo, y ese amor del Hi-jo que le lleva a caminar sereno hacia el Gólgota– se traducen en gestos muy cercanos a los hombres. Dios no se dirige a nosotros con actitud de poder y de dominio, se acerca a nosotros, tomando forma de

siervo, hecho semejante a los hombres. Jesús jamás se muestra lejano o altanero, aunque en sus años de pre-dicación le veremos a veces disgustado, porque le duele la maldad humana. Pero, si nos fijamos un poco, advertiremos en seguida que su enfado y su ira nacen del amor: son una invitación más para sacarnos de la infidelidad y del pecado. ¿Quiero yo acaso la muerte del impío, dice el Señor, Yavé, y no más bien que se convierta de su mal camino y viva? Esas palabras nos explican toda la vida de Cristo, y nos hacen compren-der por qué se ha presentado ante nosotros con un Co-razón de carne, con un Corazón como el nuestro, que es prueba fehaciente de amor y testimonio constante del misterio inenarrable de la caridad divina. No puedo dejar de confiaros algo, que constituye para mí motivo de pena y de estímulo para la acción: pen-sar en los hombres que aún no conocen a Cristo, que no barruntan todavía la profundidad de la dicha que nos espera en los cielos, y que van por la tierra como ciegos persiguiendo una alegría de la que ignoran su verdadero nombre, o perdiéndose por caminos que les alejan de la auténtica felicidad. Qué bien se entiende lo que debió sentir el Apóstol Pablo aquella noche en la ciudad de Tróade cuando, entre sueños, tuvo una visión: un varón macedonio se le puso delante, rogán-dole: pasa a Macedonia y ayúdanos. Acabada la vi-sión, al instante buscaron –Pablo y Timoteo– cómo pasar a Macedonia, seguros de que Dios los llamada para predicar el Evangelio a aquellas gentes . ¿No sentís también vosotros que Dios nos llama, que –a través de todo lo que sucede a nuestro alrededor– nos empuja a proclamar la buena nueva de la venida de Jesús? Pero a veces los cristianos empequeñecemos nuestra vocación, caemos en la superficialidad, perde-mos el tiempo en disputas y rencillas. O, lo que es peor aún, no faltan quienes se escandalizan falsamente ante el modo empleado por otros para vivir ciertos aspectos de la fe o determinadas devociones y, en lu-gar de abrir ellos camino esforzándose por vivirlas de la manera que consideran recta, se dedican a destruir y a criticar. Ciertamente puede surgir, y surgen de he-cho, deficiencias en la vida de los cristianos. Pero lo importante no somos nosotros y nuestras miserias: el único que vale es El, Jesús. Es de Cristo de quien he-mos de hablar, y no de nosotros mismos. Las reflexiones que acabo de hacer, están provocadas por algunos comentarios sobre una supuesta crisis en la devoción al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. No hay tal crisis; la verdadera devoción ha sido y es actualmente una actitud viva, llena de sentido humano y de sentido sobrenatural.

continued from page 2 No less than you, I dislike sugary statues, figures of the sacred heart which are incapable of inspiring any trace of devotion in people who have the common sense and supernatural outlook of a Christian. But it is bad logic to turn these particular abuses — which are disappearing anyway — into some sort of doctri-nal, theological problem. If a crisis does exist, it is a crisis in men’s hearts. Men are short-sighted, selfish and narrow-minded. They fail to appreciate the great depth of Christ’s love for us. Ever since the holy Church instituted today’s feast, the liturgy has offered us the nourish-ment of true piety by including among the readings a text from St Paul. In it he proposes to us a whole program of contemplative life — knowledge and love, prayer and life — beginning with this devotion to the heart of Jesus. God himself invites us in the Apostle’s words to follow this way: “May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith; may you, being rooted and grounded in love, have power to compre-hend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” The fullness of God is revealed and given to us in Christ, in the love of Christ, in Christ’s heart. For it is the heart of him in whom “the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.” Were one to lose sight of this great plan of God — the overflow of love in the world through the incarnation, the redemption and Pentecost — he could not understand the refinement with which our Lord deals with us. “Finding Peace in the Heart of Christ” is an excerpt from the homily given by St. Josemaria Escriva on the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, June 17, 1966.

Cosa bien diversa, en cambio, son las manifestaciones de ese sentimentalismo ineficaz, ayuno de doctrina, con empacho de pietismo. Tampoco a mí me gustan las imágenes relamidas, esas figuras del Sagrado Co-razón que no pueden inspirar devoción ninguna, a per-sonas con sentido común y con sentido sobrenatural de cristiano. Pero no es una muestra de buena lógica convertir unos abusos prácticos, que acaban desapare-ciendo solos, en un problema doctrinal, teológico. Si hay crisis, se trata de crisis en el corazón de los hombres, que no aciertan –por miopía, por egoísmo, por estrechez de miras– a vislumbrar el insondable amor de Cristo Señor Nuestro. La liturgia de la santa Iglesia, desde que se instituyó la fiesta de hoy, ha sa-bido ofrecer el alimento de la verdadera piedad, reco-giendo como lectura para la misa un texto de San Pa-blo, en el que se nos propone todo un programa de vida contemplativa –conocimiento y amor, oración y vida–, que empieza con esta devoción al Corazón de Jesús. Dios mismo, por boca del Apóstol, nos invita a andar por ese camino: que Cristo habite por la fe en vuestros corazones; y que arraigados y cimentados en la caridad, podáis comprender con todos los santos, cuál sea la anchura y la grandeza, la altura y la pro-fundidad del misterio; y conocer también aquel amor de Cristo, que sobrepuja todo conocimiento, para que os llenéis de toda la plenitud de Dios . La plenitud de Dios se nos revela y se nos da en Cris-to, en el amor de Cristo, en el Corazón de Cristo. Por-que es el Corazón de Aquel en quien habita toda la plenitud de la divinidad corporalmente . Por eso, si se pierde de vista este gran designio de Dios –la corrien-te de amor instaurada en el mundo por la Encarnación, por la Redención y por la Pentecostés–, no se com-prenderán las delicadezas del Corazón del Señor.

Heart of Jesus, Son of the Eternal Father, formed by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mary, gra-ciously draw me into Your heart that the flames of divine love will cauterize my wounds, heal my memories, restore my health, enkindle my faith, hope, and love.
