Rose Liel Hall– St. Michael’s Church

Each year in Advent, our church com-munity celebrates with events from two of our cultures.

Simbang Gabi is a Filipino Christmas tra-dition. It is a series of nine dawn masses. The mass starts at 7:15 a.m. It begins on December 16 and ends on the midnight of the 24th of December.

This tradition was introduced by the Span-ish friars to allow the farmers to hear mass before going to the fields early in the morning. Simbang Gabi is also known by its popular Spanish name as the Misa de Gallo, or "Mass of the Rooster.''

The tradition of the Posadas was brought to Mexico from Spain in the 1500's by Catholic Missionaries. The Posadas com-memorate Mary and Joseph's difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a place for the Christ Child to be born.

In Spanish, the word means dwelling or lodging. The Posadas begin on December 16 for nine evenings, culminating with the Posada on December 24.

The Posadas are not to be confused with a mere Christmas party. Instead, the Posa-das should be seen as a religious event.

Watch the bulletin for details.

There will be a second collection this weekend to assist those affected by the earthquakes in Mexico this past September. Due to all of the tragedies that struck dur-ing that time and the regularly scheduled second collec-tion, this collection was put off until this weekend.

Joke of the Day!

A small town had three churches: Presbyterian, Methodist, and Catholic ...

All three had a serious problem with squirrels in the church building and each, in its own fashion, had a meeting to deal with the problem.

The Presbyterians decided that it was predestined that squirrels be in the church and that they would just have to live with them.

The Methodists decided they should deal with the squir-rels lovingly in the style of Charles Wesley. They hu-manely trapped them and released them in a park at the edge of town. Within 3 days, they were all back in the church.

The Catholics had the best solution. They baptized and confirmed the squirrels. Now they only see them at Christmas and Easter.

Catechism classes are currently collecting non perishable foods to feed the hungry this holiday season. Please place your donations in the barrel located in the vestibule (front of church).

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe When the Son of Man comes in glory, may we be among those who have fed the hungry, welcomed the stranger, and clothed the naked. For Jesus tells us clearly that it is those who have demonstrated good stewardship by shar-ing their gifts with the less fortunate who will receive God’s blessing and inherit the kingdom.

PERPETUAL ADORATION NEEDS YOUR HELP

We are in the process of registering volunteers for Perpetual Adoration and we ask all members of our Parish to consider. We have registration forms under the podium sign at the vestibule of the church. There is information attached to help you understand what Adoration is.

We offer shared hours for those who might consider a long term commitment. We also are in great need of substitute volunteers - those who would be available to take the place of a permanent adorer who is ill or on vacation. Time periods convenient to you are of-fered. We urge you to check the bulletin board for substitute needs as well.

All of our current Permanent Adorers are required to re-register to update our data. All information submit-ted by current and new volunteers is strictly confiden-tial. Our deadline is January 1, 2018.

Please consider this beautiful ministry. Your bless-ings from Our Lord are bountiful. Call Roberta, Jack-ie (Spanish) or Jan for questions and thank you.

Everyone is invited to A Joy-Filled Christmas music program on Saturday, December 9th at 6:00pm at St. Mary's High School at 5648 N. El Dorado St. in Stockton. This free event celebrates the joy of Christ-mas through music performed by local professional musicians, along with performances by student bands and choir. You don't want to miss this one! Gospel Reflection:

What do the works of mercy ask of us?

What makes being judged on the works of mercy so scary is that any of us can do them but we often ne-glect them. Four times the parable of the sheep and goats repeats the six actions which requires of the just, drumming these simple, basic expec-tations into our heads. To us who hear this parable, the repetition makes the demands of mercy very clear.

However, in the parable neither the just who inherit God’s kingdom nor the unjust whom the Son of Man condemns know when they saw Je-sus in need and did or didn’t help him. Either compassionate seeing or hard-hearted blindness has become so much a part of them that it’s a saving or damning way of life.

Jesus identifies with even the least among us. In becoming one of us, God’s Son identifies with all of us. How we treat the least among us be-comes these measure of how we treat God’s Son. This theology reiterates the two great commandments that make love of God and love of neigh-bor inseparable. It is also the scrip-tural root of the Catholic social teaching to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first.

Matthew places this parable immedi-ately before Jesus’ passion in the flow of the gospel narrative. In his passion Jesus himself becomes the least among us, suffering the kind of execution aimed to shame and sub-due rebellious slaves. Sunday’s para-ble invites us to recognize Jesus in all those who suffer.

This judgment we fear is personal, but the gospel scene is global. The Son of Man gathers the nations be-fore him. The kingdom Jesus envi-sions is one of kinship and mercy. We pray this kingdom come in the Our Father.

In his book Jesus Before Christiani-ty, South African theologian Albert Nolan writes that for Jesus and his Jewish contemporaries, “’The King-dom of God’ meant a state of affairs on earth, when the poor would no longer be poor, the hungry would be satisfied, and the oppressed would no longer be miserable.”

The gospel calls us to decide which side we are on. Will we serve or ig-nore the least among us? Will we work for a kingdom of compassion and solidarity or live in the merciless fire of injustice and oppression?

Jesus died without seeing the king-dom of God realized on earth. But the opportunity for God’s will to be done on earth remains to this day.

Why wait? Now is the time to act with mercy and alleviate injustice and poverty. Jesus, who died trying to spread faith in the kingdom, speaks in this gospel, inviting us, urging us, begging us, and gifting us with intelligence, foresight and cour-age to choose compassion and serve the least of his sisters and brothers. This is the message of Pope Francis-to return to the gospel, to stand with the poor and oppressed, and to wake up to the injustices in our economic systems.

Enabling the coming of God’s king-dom is not work any one of us can do alone. If we accept Jesus’ invita-tion, we also need to join with others who have developed healing systems that help many.

The vision of Sunday’s gospel calls us to respond to the least among us not just as individuals but as a com-munity that identifies with those suf-fering need. Together we can work to change systemic injustice and make public policy responsive to the needs of people who are poor. To-gether we can sustain commitments in the face of people’s continuing needs.

One way for faith-sharing groups to enter public life is to join the efforts of a national organization.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy

Communion at Mass

From the USCCB website

In every celebration of the Eucharist,

there should be a sufficient number

of ministers of Holy Communion so

that it may be distributed in a rever-

ent and orderly manner. Bishops,

priests and deacons distribute Holy

Communion in virtue of their office

as ordinary ministers of the Body and

Blood of the Lord. When the size of

the congregation or the incapacity of

the bishop, priest, or deacon requires

it, the celebrant may be assisted by

other bishops, priests, or deacons. If

such ordinary ministers of Holy

Communion are not present, "the

priest may call upon extraordinary

ministers to assist him, i.e., duly in-

stituted acolytes or even other faith-

ful who have been deputed for this

purpose. In case of necessity, the

priest may also depute suitable faith-

ful for this single occasion (GIRM

162)."

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy

Communion should receive suffi-

cient spiritual, theological, and prac-

tical preparation to fulfill their role

with knowledge and reverence. In all

matters they should follow the guid-

ance of the diocesan bishop. When

recourse is had to Extraordinary

Minister of Holy Communion, espe-

cially in the distribution of Holy

Communion under both kinds, their

number should not be increased be-

yond what is required for the orderly

and reverent distribution of the Body

and Blood of the Lord. In all matters

such Extraordinary Ministers of Holy

Communion should follow the guid-

ance of the diocesan bishop (IBID).

All ministers of Holy Communion

should show the greatest reverence

for the Most Holy Eucharist by their

demeanor, their attire, and the man-

ner in which they handle the conse-

crated bread or wine. Should there be

any mishap--as when, for example,

the consecrated wine is spilled from

the chalice--then the affected "area . .

. should be washed and the water

poured into the sacrarium [ GIRM,

280]." (NDRHC, 29).
