“For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters. But do not use this freedom as an

opportunity for the flesh; rather serve one another through love.”

— Galatians 5:13

We like to celebrate the fact that we are free to “live the good life.” But Jesus calls us to a different

kind of freedom. St. Paul reminds us that Jesus sets us free so that we can serve one another,

share our gifts and promote God’s work here on earth to glorify His name and not honor ourselves.

We offer our prayers and condolences to Angie Wasicek on the loss of her husband,

2nd Collection This Weekend Today is the Peter’s Pence Collection, a worldwide collection that supports the charitable works of Pope Francis. Funds from this collection help victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Take this opportunity to join with Pope Francis and be a witness of charity to our suffering brothers and sisters.

Unbound Ministry I have extended an invitation to Rev. Timothy Coday C.P.P.S. to come to our parishes next weekend. Fr. Coday will speak to you about the work being done by Unbound (previously known as CFCA), and how this provides a trustworthy way to actively partic-ipate in the social outreach of the Catholic Church and answer the Gospel call to serve the poor. Founded by lay Catholics, Unbound is an organization that has served more than 600,000 children, youth and elderly in 18 developing countries since 1981 - empowering them to make more choices in their lives, live with dignity and reach their po-tential. Unbound’s unique sponsorship program is highly personalized. It matches a child, youth or aging person at a project overseas with a sponsor in the U.S. who cares about and encourages that person. With a monthly contribution, a sponsor helps to provide much-needed nourishing food, medical and dental care, the chance for a child to go to school, livelihood programs for fami-lies and much more. All of these efforts are directed at affirming the dignity of every person in their local community. Please join me in welcoming Fr. Coday to our parishes. Fr. Marty Father Timothy Coday, C.P.P.S.

“I stand in all humility to be a voice for the voiceless. Having walked with the poor, it gladdens me to ring to others the reality of others, not just talk about poverty but put a face on poverty.

So, I invite others to see that their faith call them to respond.” Father Timothy Coday is a priest of the Atlantic Province of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood Ordained in 1994. He served 32 years in the missions in Tanzania as formation direc-tor, pastor, engineer of school construction, and engineer of the Water Well Project. One

of the highlights of his work was helping a young woman com-plete grade school, high school and university. In return, she is helping her two younger step sisters complete school. Currently, Father Coday serves as Unbound’s preacher relations liaison.

ALTAR SERVERS Servers are an important ministry to the parish. They help to prepare, assist and help after Mass. Being a server is an honor; and requires a strong commitment from both the server and the server’s parents. You must be in the 3rd grade or higher, be bap-tized, have received First Holy Communion and attend Mass every weekend. All servers must go through training prior to serv-ing. We have lost servers to college, so we need more to consid-er taking on this ministry. If you are interested in serving at ei-ther parish, please call the St. Michael’s Parish Office.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD (CLOW)

Our Catholic Churches invites all of us to full, conscious, and active participation in the Mass each week. This can be challenging for young children because they may not understand the words, sym-bols, and actions of the Mass. Children’s Liturgy of the Word, also known as CLOW, gives our parish children a weekly opportunity to learn about and actively partici-pate in the Mass. How does it work? Children begin Mass seated with their families. Following the Opening Prayer of Mass, the priest calls the Catechists and children up to the altar for a blessing; then the Catechists lead the children out of the church to the Parish Hall. There, the Sunday readings are proclaimed using texts suited to children’s comprehension levels. The children also sing the Psalm. After the Gospel is proclaimed, a short homily reflection leads into the catechetical teaching. CLOW concludes with the Creed and child-friendly Prayers of the Faithful. During the Preparation of the Gifts and Offertory, the catechists lead the children back to the church, where they rejoin their families and the larger faith community to celebrate the rest of the Mass. CLOW will begin again at the 10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Michael’s in September after Labor Day.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED to teach the lessons and assist with the supervision of the children. You must be CMG Connect (Safe Environment Training & Background Check) trained and current on your compliance. For more info, contact Veronica in the Office.

All employees and volunteers over the age of 18 who work in any capacity with or around children, the elderly, and adults with special needs are required to complete the CMG Safe Haven Safe Environment training which replaced the VIRTUS training this past January. You may contact the parish office if you need the status of your training, don’t remember your login id, or need your password reset. Safe Haven Training at www.galvestonhouston.CMGConnect.org. Remember, education is a key element of the Safe Environment program.

As a parish, we are grateful to those parishioners who give of their time serving in a ministry during Mass. In recent months we have experienced a significant amount of liturgical minister no-shows. The ministry schedule is published in the bulletin the weekend prior to the first weekend of the next month. Be sure to notify the parish office at (979) 742-3383 of any known scheduling issues, such as vacations, business, etc. that would make you unavailable on a certain day or time period for the coming month, so the schedule may be prepared appropriately. Please report NO LATER than 15 minutes prior to the Mass start time. This will reduce the turmoil that arises in trying to find a replacement in such a very short notice. It is your responsibility to attempt to find a replacement when you are scheduled but cannot serve. A list of all the ministers and their phone numbers can be found in the Priest’s Sacristy. You can use this list to help find a replacement. If you are not assigned to help at Mass that day and would like to assist if needed, please check in before Mass begins. Appearance is important in the Church. We encourage you to always dress like you have come to do something important, that is, to worship God. That way if you need to fill in as a minister, you will be properly dressed. Thanks for doing what you are doing. It is a great service to the parish and all of the effort you make is deeply appreciated.

*If anyone is interested in volunteering for any of our ministries or have questions, please contact the Parish Office at (979) 742-3383.
