Message From The President Brother Timothy Fitzgerald

It has been my distinct pleasure and honor to have served as president of Mu Lambda Chapter for a second term.

As we conclude this fraternal year, we are reminded by our mission statement: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy to our communities. Mu Lambda Chapter has been a premier chapter in the Fraternity for many years and I am confident that this year has been another great year in Mu Lambda’s history. This year Mu Lambda Chapter will celebrate 87 years of dedicated service.

I would like to thank the Brothers who held offices and played other leadership roles during my administration: your support has been invaluable. We faced some challenges, but with your expertise and efforts we were able to prevail and carry on the work of Alpha. Let us support Brother Kwame Ulmer, our incoming president, in the upcoming fraternal year. He has a vision and a number of ideas to continue Mu Lambda’s service to our community and to continue its role as a leading chapter in our dear Fraternity.

Please accept my sincere thanks for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your leader: I hope I’ve justified the confidence and trust you conveyed to me.

Brothers, I am looking forward to continuing the work of Alpha in the upcoming fraternal year. Have a great summer! Fraternally,

Brother Tim Fitzgerald President

“New Muslim Cool”

Documentary & Film Series Saturday, June 12, 4:30-6:30pm

Puerto Rican American rapper Hamza Pérez ended his life as a drug dealer 12 years ago, and started down a new path as a young Muslim. Now he’s moved to Pittsburgh’s tough North Side to start a new religious community, rebuild his shattered family, and take his message of faith to other young people through his uncompromising music as part of the hip-hop duo M-Team. Raising his two kids as a single dad and longing for companionship, Hamza finds love on a Muslim networking website and seizes the chance for happiness in a second marriage. But when the FBI raids his mosque, Hamza must confront the realities of the post-9/11 world, and challenge himself. He starts reaching for a deeper understanding of his faith, discovering new connections with people from Christian and Jewish communities. NEW MUSLIM COOL takes viewers on Hamza’s ride through the streets, projects and jail cells of urban America, following his spiritual journey to some surprising places — where we can all see ourselves reflected in a world that never stops changing.

Winston-Salem State University Mr. Alumni Contest

The Mr. and Mrs. Alumni Contest and Scholarship Gala are the primary fundraising events of the year. More than 1000 distinguished guests and dignitaries will gather to celebrate the accomplishments of community leaders and recognize our scholarship recipients. Your donation will provide funding for scholarships, educational resources and support for student activities and programs throughout the coming year. It is the generosity of alumni, friends, community and business partners that make our work possible. We trust that you agree that the success of our youth is pivotal to the success of our city, region and country and ask that you assist me in this endeavor. Therefore, I invite you to participate in the WSSU National Alumni Association as a sponsor of the Annual Scholarship and Crowning Awards Gala on Friday, October 22, 2010 at the Benton Convention Center, located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. My goal is to raise $10,000 for Winston Salem State University by September 1, 2010 and here are three ways you can help:

1. Become one of my corporate sponsors at $2500. You will receive premium invitations for two, a full-page advertisement in the program, acknowledgement as Bronze sponsor in all printed promotional materials, prominent name listing on sponsorship board and a listing in alumni directory for one year as association sponsor.

2. Become one of my individual sponsors at $1000. You will receive a full page advertisement in the program and

acknowledgement as a platinum sponsor.

3. Support my Scholarship Gala participation with a $200 full-page advertisement, a $100 half-page advertisement, or $50 quarter page advertisement. It may be a greeting, a congratulatory statement, or something else to your liking.

You may also contribute through credit card or Paypa1 at www.seanbformralumni.com

Please make your check payable to WSSU National Alumni Association, denoting Sean Bellamy in the memo line

Please mail to:

As a 2005 graduate of Winston Salem State University, I can truly say that my experience was life changing and I am compelled to give back to WSSU. It is with great RAM pride that I announce my participation in the 2010 Winston Salem State University, Mr. Alumni Contest.

Trapper founded Chicago, IL June 6, 1790 Red Summer of 1919

Peter Salem and Salem Poor, along with Red summer describes the bloody race riots other Black soldiers fought in the American that occurred during the summer and early Revolution at the battle of Bunker Hill autumn of 1919. In most instances, whites and Breed’s Hill attacked African Americans in more than two June 17, 1775 dozen American cities. The summer’s greatest

violence occurred during rioting in Chicago starting on July 27th. Chicago’s beaches along Lake Michigan were segregated in practice, if not by law. A black youth who swam into the area customarily reserved for whites was stoned and drowned. Blacks responded violently when the police refused to take action. Violence between black and white mobs lasted 13 days. The resulting 38 fatalities included 23 blacks and 15 whites. Hundreds of mostly black homes and businesses on the south side of Chicago were destroyed by mobs, and a militia force of several thousand was called in to restore order.

In Washington, D.C., white men, many in military uniforms, responded to the rumored arrest of a black man for rape with 4 days of mob violence, rioting and beatings of random black people on the street. When police refused to intervene, the black population fought back. Troops tried to restore order as the city closed saloons and theaters to discourage assemblies. A summer rainstorm had more of an effect. When the violence ended, 10 whites were dead, including 2 police officers and 5 blacks. Some 150 people had been the victims of attacks. Unlike earlier race riots in U.S. history, the 1919 riots were among the first in which blacks responded with resistance to the white attacks.
