PASTORAL LEADER’S NOTES

Dear Parishioners, Have a HAPPY Lent!

If I asked you for the first word you think of when I say the word LENT what word comes to mind? How many of you thought of the word, JOY? If you were going to buy a greeting card for someone at the beginning of Lent you would never find one that read “Have a Happy Lent” on it, would you? We just don’t think of Lent as a happy, joyful time. We usually think of it as a serious, somber season of the church year and that’s because we all learned that Lent is a time that calls us to be aware of our shortcomings, to repent and change our lives and those aren’t always fun or easy things to do.

So let’s take a minute as we begin this season of Lent and look again at what Jesus is calling us to do during these next 40 days.

First, Jesus calls us to PRAY.

There may be more exciting ways to spend part of your day than sitting by yourself talking and listening to God but when we start our day with prayer, when we take time during our day to be aware of God in our life exciting things become more amazing. It’s like putting on new glasses – glasses that allow us to see God at work in the world wherever we go that day. Prayer reminds us that God loves us and is always with us and the more we pray - the more we see His presence around us. We see how He works through us and with us every day. And when we start seeing

more beauty and kindness around us we can’t help but be JOYFUL.

Second, Jesus calls us to FAST.

Well, there’s nothing fun about that, is there? Fasting or self-denial looks different for all of us during Lent. Some people give up a certain food, others practice giving away some of their possessions, and some give up a habit or a hobby that is a distraction and have seemed to taken control of them. Sometimes we may think that fasting or giving up something for 40 days is just too hard or beyond our reach but the truth is that as we cut things out of our lives, we are able to become MORE aware of all the blessings we have.

Cutting out a favorite food reminds us of how many food options we have and makes us aware of those who have less. Cutting out a time consuming habit like checking our Facebook page or watching TV or playing computer games can help us use our time doing things that are more productive and bring more joy, like spending more time with our family or visiting a friend we haven’t seen in a long time.

Self-denial isn’t about making ourselves miserable and unhappy. It is about re-focusing our attention and our hearts on the things that are most important in our lives and the world. It’s about cutting out the things that are draining our energy and distracting us from our relationship with God and our neighbor.

And lastly, Jesus calls us to ALMSGIVING – to give generously.

Sometimes we may think if we have more money we could do more things and that would give us more joy. But most of the time the opposite is true. Have you ever watched someone’s face light up when you give them a gift? Maybe it’s at Christmas or for their birthday. There’s that moment of joy, when you realize your gift has really touched the person’s heart. Lent call us to experience that moment more and more often. The invitation to generosity, to giving more often and more generously – is an invitation to experience the joy that comes from sharing with others and making a difference in their lives and the lives of our communities.

If we truly give our time, energy and attention to the practices of Lent – to prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we will discover a new sort of JOY. A joy that can make those practices last way beyond the 40 days of Lent… a joy that will change our lives forever.

So maybe out of all the seasons of the church year, LENT will become for us the most JOYFUL!!

Sr. Pam
