St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church Announces
“The Fruits of the Harvest” Commitment
What is it? It’s all about Stewardship, putting discipleship into action. We are making a prayerful request for the first fruits of God’s gifts to be freely given by
every member of our parish family. It is a day of commitment; an offering of time, talent and treasure.
Why are we doing it? The Harvest Commitment is a simple way of making a promise to return a portion of God’s gifts to God. It is also a commitment
to enliven our parish family and draw us closer together in Christ.
When is it? We are asking each parishioner to return pamphlets the weekend of November 30 and December 1, 2013.
What’s my part? Soon you will receive a “Fruits of the Harvest” pamphlet in the mail. They will also be available in the Vestibule and the Parish Office. Pray and
make an offering to God. Fill out the pamphlet and present it at a special collection to be held during Masses on November 30th & December 1st.

CHRIST CHILD PROJECT BEGINS THANKSGIVING WEEKEND
Thanks to the generosity of our parish family, many children in need are remembered at Christmas with a
wrapped gift.
The Christmas trees will be in the church, behind the Altar, the weekend after
Thanksgiving. The Christmas trees will be decorated with "stockings", and have the child's age, child's gender and their
personal "wish" on each stocking. Please take a stocking, purchase the gift, wrap it, and tape the stocking securely to the outside of the package.
Since Thanksgiving is later than usual this year, we have a shorter turnaround time. We ask that the majority of the gifts be returned and
put under the trees by the weekend of the 7 and 8. We will accept gifts put under the trees through the weekend of December 14 and 15.
All the gifts will be distributed to the children the week of the 16th of December. Thank you in advance for making Christmas brighter for so
many children in our area.
God Bless You, The Christ Child Project Committee

The Thanksgiving Secret
Most of us offer thanksgiving to God in some way, shape or form. Usually, our prayers of thanksgiving are in hindsight or perhaps at the actual moment something occurs. In either case, a recognized blessing is first acknowledged, then described, immediately credited to God, and followed with sincere thanks. But there is a bit of a secret that Jesus reveals in John’s Gospel that puts a unique twist on thanksgiving.
Jesus offers a prayer prior to raising Lazarus from the dead. Herein lays the secret: Thanksgiving precedes the
event. “Father, I thank you for having heard me,” which implies that the Father always hears his petitions. Jesus immediately adds: “I know that you always hear me,” which implies that Jesus, on his part, constantly made such petitions. Jesus’ prayer, characterized by thanksgiving, reveals to us how to ask: before the gift is given, Jesus commits himself to the One who in giving gives himself. The giver is more precious than the gift; he is the “treasure”; in him abides his Son’s heart; the gift is given “as well.” (CCC 2604)
The secret really isn’t a secret at all. After all, it has been a part of Holy Scripture for a long time. But for me it was a stunning awakening; such a beautiful and simple revelation. I find myself repeating it over and over in my head; give thanks before the gift is given because, “The giver is more precious than the gift, and the gift is given
as well.”
Once again I find myself looking in hindsight to say, “Thank you Lord” for opening my eyes to this. I hope to find a new dimension to my offered thanksgiving. I hope to discover a thanksgiving with more foresight, and a thanksgiving with great expectation.
EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Offer thanksgiving with foresight, never letting the hope of a gift overshadow the greatest treasure; the One who gives.

The Importance of the Family
Pope Benedict XVI recently called John Paul II, "the Pope of the family". He pointed out that John Paul II always emphasized that "the future of humanity passes by way of the family." Today, we often hear in the media about environmental destruction. But as John Paul II pointed out: "... we must also mention the more serious destruction of the human environment...The first and fundamental structure for "human ecology" is the family, in which man receives his first formative ideas about truth and goodness, and learns what it means to love and to be loved, and thus what it actually means to be a person. Here we mean the family founded on marriage, in which the mutual gift of self by husband and wife creates an environment in which children can be born and develop their potentialities..." Pornography, abortion and euthanasia place the family under enormous pressure in our culture. This in turn causes society to ignore and undermine the importance of marriage, which recently occurred in California. Just days after the misguided California Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage, Pope Benedict spoke out on this subject: "The union of love, based on matrimony between a man and a woman, which makes up the family, represents a good for all society that cannot be substituted by, confused with, or compared to other types of unions."

has been waiting for you for twenty centuries.". - St. Josemaria Escriva.
