SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 29, 2018

We are beginning a new homily series on I Believe in Love that will help to teach us the Little Way of St. Therese of Lisieux. During this homily series I will be pulling from a series of conferences by Fr. Jean C.J. D’elbee. These conferences are available in book form under the title I Believe in Love, A personal retreat based on the teaching of St. Therese of Lisieux by Fr. Jean C.J. D’elbee from Sophia Press.

This week we will be focusing on the first conference of Love for Love. `Pope Paul VI summarized lay spirituality when he said, “It will suffice to tell you in a word: only your personal and profound union with Christ will assure the fruitfulness of your apostolate, whatever it may be” (Pope Paul VI, Address to Congress of the Apostolate of the Laity on October 15, 1967). The way we experience this type of union with Christ in our lives is by realizing Love for love. God loves us with an unconditional love which is the definition of a love just for love’s sake. We are so used to a conditional form of love that we have a hard time accepting God’s unconditional love. St. Therese of Lisieux teaches us how to “empty our hands” by giving everything to God. It is important to give God our worries, our joys, our all. This basically means to empty ourselves of self-reliance and learn to rely totally on God.

In this weekend’s first reading and Gospel we hear of how a multiplication of loaves takes place. In the first reading Elisha instructs his servant to give twenty barley loaves to hundred people. His servant resists because he knows that is not enough bread. Elisha however empties himself of doubt and relies on God to feed the people and so God does. In the Gospel we hear of how Jesus performs an even more radical multiplication. This time Jesus feeds more than five thousand people with just five barley loaves and two fish. Jesus’s disciples like Elisha’s servant doubt in God’s providence but Jesus empties himself of doubt by trusting that God the Father will provide. In each of these multiplication accounts what occurs is Elisha or Jesus are emptying themselves of human self-reliance and showing a total reliance on God. This leads to the miracle of not only have enough food but of having leftovers.

We can fear sharing our love with others because we fear there will not be enough love to go around. St. Therese of Lisieux seeks to teach us how God’s love is without limits. If we empty ourselves of inadequacy and doubt of God’s love then we permit God to fill us with more and more love. Just like Elisha’s servant or Jesus’s disciples doubted the multiplication we doubt God’s multiplication of love. We need to learn that the more we receive God’s unconditional love and share it with others then the more love we will have. There literally will be love left over just as there was food leftover.

St. Therese of Lisieux, pray that we learn to love for love, Fr. Charlie

Padre Charlie
