FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Mark. 1:21-28

Whose authority do I acknowledge? To whom am I listening? How do you feel God’s presence in your life?

Moses and God’s people had finally arrived at the Promised Land after several generations of slavery in Egypt and a long journey through the desert. Moses knew that God was calling him to leave this world and God’s people would cross the Jordan and enter the Promised Land without him.

Moses assures them God would not leave them without direction or leadership. God would send them another prophet like himself who would speak God’s word to them. Moses tells us that God will raise up prophets to instruct us and that we should listen to them.

In today's Gospel reading the Holy Spirit, speaks about the authority of the Lord. A man comes before Jesus who is in the hand of the power of evil. Jesus makes the devil come out of the man. The bystanders are amazed because Jesus has such authority.

What do we mean when we speak about the authority of the Lord? What do we mean when we talk about authority in general? What ways do we exercise authority? What ways do we exercise the author-ity of the Lord?

When we talk about authority in general, we speak about the power a person has received to determine the actions of another person or a group of people. Society creates laws to protect its citizen and then gives authority to the police to enforce these laws.

Jesus held people spellbound because God gave Him the authority to teach the truth. This authority would never be removed from Jesus because Jesus was intimately united to his Father, the source of the authority.

We share in the authority of the Lord to the extent that we are united to the source of this authority. When we are confirmed we receive the power, the authority, to defeat evil in the world and to lead others to Jesus, the source of all truth.

God has entrusted us with his authority only to the extent that we allow him into our lives. That is the reason why the Church is firm that we attend mass regularly and receive the sacraments regularly. We need to have union with God so we can bring his authority, his power to the world.

We can make Jesus' presence real for others. We have the authority to do this. People want to learn how to live their lives in such a way that when they conclude their lives they can stand before the Lord saying that they have made God’s Presence known in the world. We can do this.

Are we, Jesus followers of today, any different? Probably not! What should this tell us? The salvation is a gift of the Lord and not something that we earn by listening well and always doing God’s will.

God wants to save us. Our part in salvation is to keep on trying, accept-ing our brokenness but asking for forgiveness. We should always trust in God's Mercy. Today we pray that we may remain united to the Lord, the source of the power and the authority we have received.

CUARTO DOMINGO EN EL TIEMPO ORDINARIO Marcos 1:21-28

¿De quién es la autoridad que reconozco? ¿A quién escucho? ¿Cómo sientes la presencia de Dios en tu vida?

Moisés y la gente de Dios finalmente llegaron a la Tierra Prometida después de varias generaciones de esclavitud en Egipto y un largo viaje a través del desierto. Moisés sabía que Dios lo estaba llamando a aban-

donar este mundo y que la gente de Dios cruzaría el Jordán y entraría en la Tierra Prometida sin él.

Moisés les asegura que Dios no los dejaría sin dirección o liderazgo. Dios les enviaría a otro profeta como él que les hablaría de la palabra de Dios. Moi-sés nos dice que Dios levantará profetas para instruirnos y que debemos escucharlos.

En el Evangelio de hoy, escuchando el Espíritu Santo, habla de la autoridad del Señor. Un hombre viene ante Jesús que esta poseído por un espíritu inmundo. Jesús hace que el diablo salga del hombre. Los transeúntes se sorprenden porque Jesús tiene tal autoridad.

¿A qué nos referimos cuando hablamos de la autoridad del Señor? ¿A qué nos referimos cuando hablamos de autoridad en general? ¿De qué mane-ra ejercemos la autoridad? ¿De qué manera ejercemos la autoridad del Señor?

Cuando hablamos de autoridad en general, hablamos del poder que una persona ha recibido para determinar las acciones de otra persona o de un grupo de personas. La sociedad crea leyes para proteger a su ciudadano y luego da autoridad a la policía para hacer cumplir estas leyes.

Jesús sano a la gente hechizada porque Dios le dio la autoridad para ense-ñar la verdad. Esta autoridad nunca sería apartada de Jesús porque Jesús estaba íntimamente unido a su Padre, la fuente de la autoridad.

Compartimos la autoridad del Señor en la medida en que estamos unidos a la fuente de esta autoridad. Cuando somos confirmados recibimos el po-der, la autoridad, para derrotar el mal en el mundo y para conducir a los demás a Jesús, la fuente de toda verdad.

Dios nos ha confiado su autoridad sólo en la medida en que le permitimos entrar en nuestras vidas. Esa es la razón por la que la Iglesia es firme de que asistimos a misa regularmente y recibimos los sacramentos regularmente. Necesitamos tener unión con Dios para poder traer su autoridad, su poder al mundo.

Podemos hacer que la presencia de Jesús sea real para los demás. Tene-mos la autoridad para hacer esto. La gente quiere aprender a vivir sus vidas de tal manera que cuando concluyen sus vidas pueden estar ante el Señor diciendo que han hecho que la Presencia de Dios sea conocida en el mundo. Podemos hacerlo.

¿Somos nosotros, seguidores de Jesús hoy, hay alguna diferencia? ¡Probablemente no! ¿Qué debería decirnos esto? La salvación es un don del Señor y no algo que ganamos escuchando solo el bien, sino haciendo la voluntad de Dios.

Dios quiere salvarnos. Nuestra parte en la salvación es seguir intentándolo, aceptando nuestro quebrantamiento pero pidiendo perdón. Siempre de-bemos confiar en la Misericordia de Dios. Hoy oramos para permanecer unidos al Señor, fuente del poder y de la autoridad que hemos recibido.

FALSE PROPHETS, TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God’s very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God’s mouth. In Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God’s own voice, the Holy One of God. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. But in today’s Gospel we learn that Jesus’ fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn’t an authority because he was popular or famous. We also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that any-one can quote scripture, even against God’s purposes. And today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of reli-gious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If

we truly listen to God, it will be God’s very words filling our mouths. FALSOS PROFETAS, VER-DADEROS PROFETAS Hoy nos enteramos en Deuteronomio de que las pa-labras de Dios llenarán la bo-ca de un profeta verdadero, pero un profeta falso, en cier-to modo, pone meras palabras mortales en boca de Dios. En el Evangelio según San Mar-cos, vemos las enseñanzas de Jesús y la curación como obra

de un verdadero profeta, uno lleno de la autoridad de la propia voz de Dios, el Santo de Dios. La historia de nuestra Iglesia está llena de profe-tas, verdaderos y falsos. Pero en el Evangelio de hoy nos enteramos de que la fama de Jesús se extendió porque enseñaba con autoridad; su autoridad no pro-cedía de que Él fuera popular o famoso. También aprendemos de Él, en sus enfrentamientos en el de-sierto cuando fue tentado por Satanás, que cualquiera puede citar la Sagrada Escritura, incluso en contra de los propósitos de Dios. Y hoy nos enteramos de que su autoridad no era como la de los escribas, que ocu-paban los cargos oficiales de autoridad religiosa en aquella época. Nuestro trabajo consiste en hacer nuestro mejor esfuerzo para discernir los verdaderos profetas que hay en medio de nosotros, y también no-sotros mismos ser verdaderos profetas. El salmista nos dice cómo hacerlo: no endurecer nuestro corazón cuando Dios habla. Si de verdad escuchamos a Dios, serán Sus palabras Dios las que llenarán nuestra boca.

WEALTH FROM FAITH!

Rosario was a poor woman who barely had the necessities to live. One day she gave the priest from her parish a handout, from her savings, "for the worship of the Lord." the priest said to her: Mrs. Rosario, keep that money you need it. You are poor. Me poor, Mr. priest? How can I be poor if I have the happiness of being a daughter of God? I am also an heir to the Kingdom of God.

I wish they were all as rich as me! The gen-erosity of those who have least is always admirable. What an example!

Rosario era una mujer pobre que apenas tenía lo indispensable para vivir. Un día entrego al sacerdote de su parroquia una limosna, de sus ahorritos, “para el culto al Señor”. el cura le dijo: Señora Rosario, guarde para usted ese dinero que le hace falta. Usted es pobre y lo necesita. Yo pobre,

señor cura? Como voy a ser pobre si tengo la dicha de ser hija de Dios? además soy heredera del Reino de Dios. Ojala fuesen todos tan rica como yo!!! Siempre es admirable la generosidad de los que menos tienen. Qué ejemplo!
