Asweapproachanewscholasticyear,Iwanttoinviteyoutoconsiderregisteringyoureighth-gradesonordaughterfortheConfirmationProgramatSt.LukeParish.However,beforeyouregisteryourchildforthesacrament,pleasereadthisletterandreviewtheConfirmationHandbookthatisprovided.It’simportanttonotethattherearecertainrequirementsandexpectationsduringthisyearofsacramentalpreparation.

Pleasemarkyourcalendars.Wewillhaveanorientationmeetingforparentsofeighth-gradestudentsonThursday,September23,at6:30p.m.,atSt.LukeChurch.Unlessotherwiseindicated,themeetingwilltakeplaceintheFatherCourtneyRoom.TheorientationshouldanswerallthequestionsyoumayhaveregardingtheConfirmationProgram.Thismeetingisonlyfortheparents.

Asyouknow,theChurchteachesusthatbaptismisthefirstsacramentChristiansreceive.Assuch,itisthe“basisofthewholeChristianlife”(CatechismoftheCatholicChurch,1213).Baptismgivessanctifyinggrace,whichbeginsthedivinelifewithinthesoul(seeCatechismoftheCatholicChurch,1266).WeknowthatbaptismbeginsthespirituallifebutwealsobelievethatConfirmation“bringsanincreaseanddeepeningofbaptismalgrace.”

TheincreaseinthespirituallifeiscloselyrelatedtothespecialstrengthpouredoutbytheHolySpiritontheindividualatConfirmation.ConfirmationunitesthatpersonmorefirmlytoChrist,increasesthegiftsoftheHolySpiritwithinhimorher,andbindshimorhermoreperfectlytotheChurch.Inaddition,itgivesthebaptizedCatholicthegracetobearwitnesstotheFaithandtoactawitnesstoJesusChrist(seeCatechismoftheCatholicChurch,1303).

Atyourchild’sbaptism,youmadeapromisetoGodtoraiseyourchildasaCatholic.ThankyouforeducatingyourchildintheFaithathome,enrollinghimatSt.LukeCatholicSchoolorSundayMorningReligiousEducation(SMRE).YourdecisiontosharetherichnessofourCatholicfaithathomeandprovideyourchildwithaformalCatholiceducationmeansthatyouhavetakenyourcommitmentseriously.WehopethatyourchildisalsobeginningtoliveouthisorherCatholicfaithinpracticalandmeaningfulways.Thiswillhelpyourchildinmakinganinformedchoicetobeconfirmedin2022.

ThereareanumberofexpectationsduringtheConfirmationProgramthatwillbediscussedattheupcomingparentmeeting.However,oneimportantexpectationthatIwanttohighlightinthiscommunicationisthatduringthisyearofsacramentalpreparationparentsneedtoactivelyencouragetheirchildrentoworshipatMassonSundaysandholydaysofobligation.FromtheearliestdaysoftheChurch,disciplesofChristhaveunderstoodthatbeingaChristianisnotaprivatematter.WearecalledtobeCatholicChristiansinacommunityoffaith.WhileallofusshouldengageintheprivateworshipofGodduringtheweek,our

REQUIREDSERVICEPROJECTS25HoursofChristianServiceTheChurchteachesusthatitistheresponsibilityofthebaptizedtolivetheGospelintheworld.TheConfirmationProgramteachesyoursonsanddaughterstoactivelypreachandspreadtheGospelthroughtheirdailyactivitiesathome,school,parishandcommunity.Ofcourse,theserviceprojectisneveranendinitself.It’snotsomethingtoscratchoffthelistofConfirmationrequirements.ChristianserviceprojectsshouldteachyourchildrenthatlovingservicepleasesGodandbenefitsourneighbor.Inaverypracticalsense,ChristianserviceprojectsshoulddirectyouthtoloveGodandneighbor.25HoursofChristianService

ServiceneedstobecompletedinthefollowingthreeareasnolaterthanMay31forSt.LukeSchoolandSMREcandidates:

• Eachcategoryforserviceshouldbeselected.Ofthetotal25hours,nocategoryshould

havelessthan3hours.Forexample,astudentmaychoose16hoursofParish/andorSchoolService,3hoursforPrayerandPublicWitness,3hoursforCommunity,and3hoursforDomesticChurch.Othercombinationsarepossible.Astudentmayevenexceedthe25hoursofservice.Infact,manycandidatesdoexceedtherequirednumberofservicehours!AcknowledgementofthetopthreestudentswhocompletethemosthourswillbemadeattheConfirmationMassatSt.LukeParish.
