COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

YEAR 11 ENROLMENTS Our senior students are extremely fortunate to have an extensive range of Higher School Certificate courses available and two distinctive pathways for completing the NSW Higher School Certificate.

One option is the more academic pathway designed mainly for students who wish to pursue further tertiary education at a university after completing the HSC. This is available at both MacKillop Senior College and St Joseph‟s Regional College.

The other option is the pathway designed mainly for students who wish to pursue employment options, including apprenticeships and traineeships, either following the completion of their HSC or in conjunction with it.

During the coming week, our Colleges will be holding Enrolment Information Nights as follows:

Newman Senior Technical College Tuesday, 22nd July commencing at 6.00pm St Joseph‟s Regional College Wednesday 23rd July commencing at 6.00pm

SCHOOLBOY INTERNATIONAL RUGBY GAMES During the coming weeks St Agnes‟ Parish Secondary Schools in Port Macquarie will host two visiting schoolboy rugby teams from England.

St Joseph‟s Regional College will host the 1st XVIII from John Hampden Grammar, a selective state boys‟ grammar school from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. The touring party arrive on 22nd July and will play a Port Macquarie Combined Catholic Colleges team at the Regional College oval at 3.30pm on Wednesday, 23rd July.

MacKillop Senior College will host a second touring school boys‟ rugby team from Dauntsey‟s School, a co-educational independent day and boarding school in the village of West Lavington, Wiltshire, England. The school is set in an estate of over 100 acres of beautiful countryside about 30 minutes‟ drive from Bath. Several ex-students from MacKillop have completed Gap Year placements at the school over the last twelve years.

The Port Macquarie Combined Catholic Colleges team will play Dauntsey‟s School 1st XVIII at Stuart Park on Friday, 1st August commencing at 7.30pm. This will be a feature match following the normal inter-school competition games. Junior players and families are encouraged to plan to stay for the game and enjoy the barbecue provided by the junior Rugby committee.

After spending the weekend in Port Macquarie with local families the Dauntsey‟s boys will be farewelled from MacKillop at 9.00am on Monday, 4th August.

We are still looking for a couple of families to assist with billeting students. If you are able to assist, please contact John Rossington at St Joseph‟s Regional or Darren Smith at MacKillop Senior College/St Paul‟s High School. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

Uniforms We have noticed this week that many girls have had a growth spurt in the last few months and skirts no longer meet the required KNEE LENGTH. We would ask that this be rectified before Monday, 29th July (Week 3) to avoid detentions. Protected Industrial Action I am obliged to inform you of the Protected Industrial Action by a number of St Joseph‟s Regional College staff on Wednesday 23rd July. Notwithstanding, it is my expectation that students attend College on this day. An amended program will be in place during periods 1 to 3 with normal lessons commencing at 11.30am. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any additional questions regarding this matter. Congratulations to ex-student Karen Murphy Karen Murphy, an ex-student, was last week awarded her PhD from UNSW. Karen grew up in Port Macquarie where she attended St Joseph‟s Primary School and St Joseph‟s Regional where she graduated Dux of the school (Year 10) in 1996. She completed her schooling in Sydney, achieved an Honours degree in Advanced Science from Sydney University, worked as a research biologist at the Prince of Wales Research Institute, and finally won her PhD. Karen has recently located with her husband to Los Angeles, USA, where she is hopeful of furthering her scientific career.

God Bless

St Joseph’s Regional College Chapel. As a College community we are extremely pleased with the progress of the building of our Chapel. We are at „lock-up‟ stage with a few interior fittings to finalise. Over the coming weeks we will be working on the landscaping around the Chapel in order to maximise its use for masses, liturgies and for reflection activities. We also look forward to a formal opening of this impressive venue later in the term, news of this finalised date will be notified in later newsletters.

HSIE NEWS

YEAR 9 NATIONAL CAPITAL EXCURSION At the end of last term students from our College undertook an education tour of the national capital. While on this tour they participated in a variety of educational programmes with a focus on Australia‟s history, culture, heritage and democracy. To break up the trip travelling down to Canberra we stopped in Sydney where half of the group visited Mary MacKillop Place while the other half visited St Mary‟s Cathedral. On arriving in Canberra we were greeted by the cold but we were lucky enough that Mr Hollis had arrived early opening all our rooms and putting the heating on.

While at Parliament House on the Tuesday the students participated in a mock debate on a new Bill. They were also greeted by a local member, David Gillespie, who spent time answering their questions on being a politician. A big highlight for the students was the War Memorial, in particular the Science and War Program. Students also visited the Australian National Museum. On the Wednesday we visited the AIS and spent time in their popular Sportex room followed by a visit to Questacon and its hands on educational science galleries. The afternoon saw us learning about the history of Democracy in Australia at Old Parliament House and elections at the Australian Electoral Commission. In between the breaks students also visited the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, drove around the embassies and high commissions and took in the scenery from Mt Ainslie. We had a fun night of activities at the ASIS as well as Ten Pin Bowling and a night at the movies seeing “How to Train Your Dragon 2”. On our way back to Port Macquarie we stopped to walk the Harbour Bridge and took a ferry ride to Manly before continuing home. I would like to thank all Year 9 students who attended the excursion. On speaking to some of these students it appears that highlights were primarily the War Memorial and Questacon. I would also like to thank parents who supported the excursion and chose to send their son/daughter. We know that the cost is a burden on families. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government has contributed funding of $30 per eligible student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate programme towards those costs. This contribution is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program. We hope that the excursion was a rewarding experience for all students. A special mention to staff who helped make the excursion a success. Staff in attendance included Mr Battiston, Mr Buckley, Miss Chaloner, Mr Eichmann, Mr Hollis, Miss Healy, Miss Howard, Mrs McKee, Mrs Middleton, Miss O’Brien, Mr Robins and Mrs Walsh.

YEAR 8 CAMP TO SOUTH WEST ROCKS In Week 9 of Term 3 all Year 8 students will travel to South West Rocks for a 4 day camping experience from Tuesday, 9th September til Friday, 12th September. This is an important and valuable part of the Year 8 PDHPE Outdoor Recreation program. During class time, students will participate in lessons and activities that will prepare them for this excursion. The cost of the camp will be $90, which will cover transport to and from South West Rocks, camping fees, snorkeling and the use of common equipment for cooking and cleaning etc. Students will need to provide their own tents, food and sleeping equipment for the camp with breakfast and lunch being provided on the Friday. Students are encouraged to take stock of any family camping equipment over the holidays and, if needed, keep aware of local camping store sales. Should you have any questions or concerns please contact the College office.

WALKATHON – 8th August 2014

This year‟s Walkathon will be held on Friday, 8th August 2014 and is a major fundraising event for the College, giving students the opportunity to raise funds for items they feel will enhance their learning and make their time at SJRC more enjoyable. In recent years money raised has purchased outdoor seating, BBQ tables and chairs, sporting and musical equipment, comfortable lounge style seating for the library, F5 Open Learning and Student Services rooms. In addition to these items $$$$ have been put aside over the past three years toward the purchase of a College mini-bus to be used for sporting, cultural and community service activities. This will in turn reduce the cost for parents.

All students are strongly encouraged to raise money and next week will be given their Sponsorship Envelope. There will be prizes for students who raise the most money in each year group, PCs that earn over $1000, the highest earning PC and all students who raise over $50 go into the draw for a $500 gift voucher at a store of their choice. Every $50 earns an extra ticket in the major prize.

Families and local business are also welcomed to sponsor with monetary donations or with suitable prizes for the students. Please contact Mrs Joanne Williams in the office if you would like to become a sponsor. Alternatively if you would like to discuss a major sponsorship of a College Mini-Bus please phone Mr Chris Kalchbauer at the College.

Thank you for encouraging your sons and daughters to seek sponsorship, in addition to completing the healthy 10km walk, as it provides opportunity to purchase items which could not otherwise be purchased for students.

MUSIC PICNIC ON THE TOWN GREEN If you're out looking for some entertaining music next weekend, head to the Sundowner Grasshouse at lunchtime on Sunday to see and hear the groovy sounds of the St Agnes Secondary Schools Jazz Band.

The combined Catholic schools bands will be putting on an encore performance of their recent tour of Darwin. The one week tour saw them performing at several primary schools as well as public performances at the world famous Mindle Beach Markets and Stokes Hill Wharf.

All the audiences were enthusiastic in their appreciation of the band and the music, but the young musicians were especially captivated by the effect their music had on the children from the primary schools - some of whom had never seen or heard a band like it before.

According to the band's director, Mrs Sharon Green, the primary school concerts really honed the performance skills of the students. "They really discovered the magic of how to engage the kids with their music and get them involved in the performance. Then they were able to bring that same passion and enthusiasm to the public shows."

The Grasshouse performances next Sunday will begin at 12:30pm at the Sundowner end of the Town Green.

In addition to performances by the St Agnes Combined Concert Band and Jazz Band, look out for the spectacular drum-line as well as a set from popular young Bonny Hills band, Stronghart.

Sign-out Procedure If a student departs the College, they must collect a sign-out sheet from the College office. One requirement of every student is that they return all textbooks and Library books to the Library, and it is the student‟s responsibility to check classroom cupboards, not the teachers, or Library staff. Many thanks to all those who complete this requirement promptly. Link to the Sydney Morning Herald 2014 HSC Study Guide
