From the desk of Father James

“Jesus said to the Twelve: "Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed,

nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light;

what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.” -Matthew 10:26-ff.

One of the greatest struggles that we experience in our lives is fear. We seem to be afraid of so much. Sometimes this fear is irrational, sometimes it is justified. But in either case fear can keep us from en-tering into the full life of grace and fullness that our God has given to us.

Fear is defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that something or someone is dangerous, likely to cause a pain or a threat. I would further add fear can also enter our lives through the unknown. As this fear enters our lives, we shy away from living and being in the present moment. We can even begin to shy away from others, from ourselves and worse, we even shy away from God.

What makes us afraid? We are afraid of many things. We are afraid of being hurt by someone or something. We don’t like to feel uncomfortable. Some people are afraid of speaking in front of people because they might become embarrassed. Some are afraid of being alone. Some are afraid to have their heart broken. Some people are afraid of the truth, if they see through the lies that they have creat-ed in their lives. They might be forced to acknowledge that there is something in their life that they might need to change. Pride often keeps us from seeing that we are not perfect.

There are many things that make us afraid. What is it that makes you afraid? What is it in your life that you do not want to see, or experience? Who do you not want to interact with or shy away from interacting with? It is important that we recognize these fears in our lives because our God does not want us to be afraid. Jesus calls us to not be afraid, “fear no one.”

When we fear something or someone, we draw back from the light, we retreat into a darkness that can eventually snuff out our spirit. The darkness can take our breath away. This is where the realm of se-crets lives and thrives. But these lies and the darkness in which they thrive is not meant to be. Jesus came and brought light into the world. This light, which is truth, is meant to be proclaimed to every-one. Jesus makes it possible so that the darkness can be burned away and the truth revealed. We can be set free from all fear, all anxiety, all those things that keep us from living fully in the Lord!

Do not be afraid! The Lord is with you! In his great love, He answers us!

Olive Wood from the Holy Land

This weekend, June 24 & 25, a group from the Holy Land will be selling religious articles after all Masses to sup-port the Catholic Christian minorities in Bethlehem. As a tradition, many of the Catholic families in the Holy Land work in small workshops to produce religious articles from olive wood. These articles represent the Christian art of the Holy Land. In the past, they used to sell their art-work to pilgrims who visit the Holy Land. However, these days they are facing an economic hardship as very few tourists visit the Holy Land due to security issues. Many of the Catholic families immigrated and left the Holy Land. The percentage of Christians in the Holy Land has dropped to less than 2%. Therefore, if this hardship continues as it is now, it is believed that in a few years, there will be no Catholics in Bethlehem or Jerusalem. The struggle to preserve the Catholic identity of the birthplace of our savior Jesus Christ is a serious concern for Catholics around the world. Sale proceeds will be used to help and support the Catholics in the Holy Land and to encourage them not to immigrate.

(and Let Your Child Bless You)

Pbgrace.com / Pray with Your Kids

(Adapted from 77 Ways to Pray with Your

Kids.)

Did you know that, as a baptized lay person, you are not only qualified to bless people

and objects and places in certain situations (such as in your home), you are called to

do so?

Regularly blessing your child is a powerful symbol of your love, and more

importantly, your desire to entrust your child into the care of God’s love.

Here’s how to start: Come up with a short ritual for blessing your children during tran-

sitional times of the day (leaving /returning home, going to bed, etc.).

Here’s how:

Make the Sign of the Cross on your child’s forehead saying: “May God bless you

and keep you, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.”

Seal the blessing with a kiss on the forehead.

Use holy water if you have it available.

Even more powerfully, encourage your kids to bless you as well. Kids as young as two

will enjoy reciprocating your blessing once they’ve received it often enough.

Hope Garden Update

Summer seems to have arrived! I see sunshine, blooming flowers, sneezing people, and joyful school children. I also see that our Hope Garden is planted and growing. The Hope Garden (located behind the Old Hall) provides fresh produce to our food pantry. We are growing a long list of vegeta-bles and fruits. Our strawberry and raspberries are producing beautiful produce and we are excited for what else our garden will bring. A big thank you to the Vida Eppich, Carol and Mike Roos, and Vern and Debbie Puchalski for their tireless work in our garden. They are truly vegetation rockstars!

If you or your family is interested in volunteering at the garden, contact Anna in the Parish Center. Vol-unteers must be able to bend down and lift buckets of produce.

"Some argue that reli-gious people cannot im-pose their morality on others. This ignores the fact that they themselves seek to impose their morality on religious people and runs directly counter to the religious diversity that modern societies aspire to. To dismiss concerns about religious freedom in a misguided attempt to address unjust discrimination is not to advance justice and tolerance. Instead, it stands as an affront to basic human rights and the importance of religion in society." ~United States Bishops Sunday, June 25 Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 833 Above all, children need the unconditional love and attention of their fathers, whether they succeed or make mistakes, when life is easy and when life is hard.

Announcements

We will have an Independence Day Mass on July 4 at 8:30 am in the church. Come join Fr. James, the Knights of Columbus and Respect Life Ministry as we celebrate our nation's birth. This is a great way to begin this spe-cial day! After Mass there will be a procession to Oregon St while reciting the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. A patriotic reflection will follow at the end of the procession. All are welcome to attend and participate!

Vacation Bible School for ages 4 through 5th grade will be this week, June 26 – 30 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm (extended day option 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.)

Next weekend, July 1 & 2, we will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection. This collection supports the charitable works of Pope Francis to reach out to the marginalized and suffering around the world. Envelopes can be found in the narthex and the church entrances.

Are you planning to be away this summer on vacation? Online giving is a great way to support your parish while you are away. Please visit the parish website and click on the link for online giving. Registration is easy and you have the option to choose the frequency and the method of payment. Please contact Sheila in the parish office if you have questions.

Happening This Week:

Olive wood sacramentals from the Holy Land will be sold after all Masses this weekend, June 24 & 25.

How is your flower garden growing? If you have flowers in your garden, preferably long stemmed flowers, and would be willing to share them for the altar bouquets, please let us know, so we won't have to purchase flow-ers. Flowers should be delivered on Friday mornings by 9:00 am to the church. Thanks for sharing God's beauties with us!

Parish Announcements:

Congratulations to the recipients of this year’s Itel, Knights of Columbus and Contreras Scholarships: Jo-seph Henry Biever was awarded the Itel scholarship, Benjamin David Wiren was awarded the Knights of Colum-bus scholarship and Bailey Claire Schafer was awarded the Contreras scholarship.

Fortnight for freedom, the name for a program to highlight the importance of defending religious freedom in our country, runs now through July 4. You can pick up a prayer card in the Narthex to help you remember these important two weeks.

Out of Parish:

Saint Cecilia Parish is having a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico December 9 – 14, 2017 to be there for the Feast Day and the beautiful Mass of Roses on December 12. The cost is $2049.00 per person including airfare from Portland. Included in the package is breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. There will be Mass every day.
