Prelude

Opening Hymn: 66 The God of Abraham Praise

Opening Prayer First Reading: Exodus 1:8-17 Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Responsorial Psalm: 124 (congregation responds with bold)

If it had not been the LORD who was on our side when our enemies attacked us,

then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us; then the flood would have swept us away, the torrent would have gone over us;

then over us would have gone the raging waters. Blessed be the LORD, who has not given us as prey to their teeth. We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken,

and we have escaped. All: Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

Second Reading: Romans 12:1-8 Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Hymn: 520 Be Still My Soul Morning Prayer & Lord’s Prayer

Today’s Announcements

♦ Ordination of Brooks and Jordan Gignilliat: Jordan and Brooks will be ordained into Christian ministry tonight at 6 p.m. in the Emmanuel Chapel. A reception will follow in the Emmanuel Library Lounge.

♦ Building Stewardship Committee: We will meet for a "Thank You Card" Party at John and Liz Bank's house Monday August 28 at 7 p.m. (1700 Sylvan Hill Rd., Elizabethton)

♦ Steeple Raising This Week? Watch the Hopwoodlist and Facebook for late breaking announcements about the raising of the steeple. It might happen this week. If so, we want to gather people for prayers on the Derthick Lawn, and we will provide a lunch meal for those who have worked so hard on the construction. Plan to bring a couple dishes to share. We will have a grill for meat. The construction people will give us a couple days' notice.

♦ Jake and Erin Moore and Family in from Ethiopia: Join us next Sunday in welcoming the Moores (Jake, Erin, Aidan, Gwyneth, Shea) back to Hopwood. The Moores have served as CMF missionaries in Ethiopia for many years. They are returning to the States (Oklahoma). The Moores will speak to all of our Sunday School Classes next week, September 3 at 9:30am, and will share in a Mission Moment during the worship hour.

♦ Welcome Back Picnic-September 3: Everyone is welcome to a Picnic following service next week. (If the weather is uncooperative, we will meet in the Ashworth Room in the Thompson Center. This is an outdoor space with limited resources, so plan accordingly. We will provide drinks! There is also limited parking, so consider bringing items that you can walk over. Please bring items ready to serve WITH serving utensils. If you have folding outdoor chairs, bring those. If you have big (larger than one gallon) drink coolers we can use, let Mary Jackson know.

♦ Church Work Day: We are planning a series of work days this fall in anticipation of our return to Hopwood. Our first church work day will be Saturday, Sept. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon. Please join us to help prepare our space.

♦ Membership Class: Interested in membership at Hopwood? What does it mean to be a member of the congregation? Tim will lead a four-week class that meets during the Sunday School hour at 9:30am to explore membership in the Body of Christ at Hopwood. Tell Tim of your interest (423) 383-2043 or write him at [email protected]. The class will begin September 10 and will meet in the Emmanuel Library.

♦ Welcome! Please fill out one of our information cards, giving us your latest contact information, letting us know your interest in getting involved with a small group, and helping us know how you might like to serve the congregation (and the community!). Drop it in the offering plate.

♦ Small Groups: We will be meeting in homes for small group study and prayer this Fall. What is your best evening? Watch for a signup sheet. Group leaders and host homes needed too. If you would like to join the group that meets at the home of Mel & Rosemary Farmer, they are beginning a study of Ephesians together, using Max Lucado's book as a guide. We meet on Monday evening at 6:30, usually out by 8. Please feel free to "try us out" and see if we are a fit. It's a tea party at our house (Farmers, 1103 Lester Harris Road) with every kind of tea imaginable!

♦ Welcome Back Students!! We welcome students new and returning to the area, and to Hopwood. We hope you find a good home here among us. We will be worshiping at Emmanuel Chapel on Sundays, and will have small groups meeting in homes around the area. Join us in serving Christ and the kingdom as it grows in our community. We will be back in our building by December, we hope, but as we all know, the building is not the church. Come join the church as we step forward!

♦ Serving At-Home Communion: We need helpers who will agree to an important ministry of serving the sick and shut in by visiting three or four folks with home communion one Sunday a month. Let Laura Hicks Hardy know your availability at: 423-342-1536 or [email protected].

♦ Need Help? Jephias Maipi is looking for some extra work. If you have needs, let him know at:[email protected].

♦ Youth Coordinator Position: We are looking to name a new youth intern to work with younger kids. If you are interested in this part-time position (around 8-10 hours per week) see Ben or Tim for more details

♦ Tuition Help For Zimbabwe Youth: Tuition fees for Innocent, the deaf student that we have been assisting in Zimbabwe, are due again by the end of August. Please help us raise the $350 to pay for his schooling. Just make a note on your contribution to the care fund. We are also seeking help for Jephias’ children’s school fees. For more information, see George Fulwider.

♦ The Hopwood Book Club will meet on Saturday, September 16 at 9 a.m. at Open Door Coffeehouse, 101 E 8th Ave, Johnson City, TN 37601. We will read and discuss The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II by Denise Kiernan. Feel free to join us.

♦ Family Promise: Hopwood will host Family Promise guests September 17-23 at Northridge Community Church on 11E. If you're interested in preparing a meal, driving the guests in the morning or afternoon, staying overnight, or simply hanging out with the guests in the evening, please contact Anna Johnson:[email protected] or 423-557-7047.
