THE DIVISION BETWEEN “US AND “THEM”
WE HUMANS have a penchant for dividing ourselves into various groups-- rich and poor, wealthy nations and poor nations, black people and white people, God’s chosen people to those gentile peoples, democrats and republicans and so on it goes. Going to school we divide
ourselves into the popular ones and the ugly and or disposed ones. There are any number of situations and circumstances where we find ourselves dividing ourselves up for various reasons.
‘FOR CENTURIES, the Jews had long been accustomed to their special role as God’s chosen people. Even though the prophets told them that God prefers the sacrifices of the heart to that of animal flesh; some never saw how the providence of God was truly more and more universal.
“It was not because you are the largest of all nations that the Lord set his hear heart on you and chose you, for you are really the smallest of all nations. It was because of God’s fidelity to the oath God had sworn to your fathers….Understand then that the Lord your God is the faithful God who keeps his merciful covenant down to the thousandth generation.”(Deuteronomy 7:7–9).
“WHILE TELLING the story of Naaman the leper, the author of 2 Kings was well aware that his readers would have regarded Naaman as doubly disadvantaged and doubly disdained.Leprosy was a horrible disease for which the Jews had no cure. Once it entered a person that person had to be segregated from the rest of society for the health of all the people. Clearly the statement here is that no person is outside of God’s care. It says that all of God’s people are really his people.” Similarly in Lucan Gospel for today there is a double healing. All ten are healed and the Samaritan, that group of people who are despised by God-fearing Jews, returns to give thanks to Jesus for his healing. This is a slap in the face, if you will, for pious Jews who witnessed a miracle that had to transfix them.
IN THIS POLITICAL presidential period it might be good for us to remember that no matter who is elected the United States will continue. It is good to remind us that excessive division, disgusting name calling, and physical fights and violence toward others will only need repair as we move toward December and the inauguration in January. If God has no bias or prejudice, neither can we. If we profess to be his disciples we cannot live in the world with that strict division of economic groups, races, or other human made ways of dividing ourselves up in a positive or negative way.. Jeremiah (31:3) told us “ I have loved you with an everlasting love, I have called you and you are mine.”
GOD SAYS of each of us that we belong to him. God has chosen to dwell with us in our hearts and in our tabernacles and in us as we become part of him in the eucharist. Create bridges;create pathways; create approaches to one another and create that opportunity to increase LOVE.

PROCESSIONAL:
LORD HAVE MERCY
GLORIA
OPENING PRAYER First Reading 2 Kings 5:14-17
Naaman went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times at the word of Elisha, the man of God. His flesh became again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean of his leprosy.
Naaman returned with his whole retinue to the man of God. On his arrival he stood before Elisha and said, “Now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel. Please accept a gift from your servant.”
Elisha replied, “As the LORD lives whom I serve, I will not take it;” and despite Naaman's urging, he still refused. Naaman said: “If you will not accept, please let me, your servant, have two mule-loads of earth, for I will no longer offer holocaust or sacrifice to any other god except to the LORD.” Psalm Response: Psalm 98:1, 2-3, 3-4 The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power Second Reading: 2 Timothy 2:8-13
Beloved: Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David: such is my gospel, for
which I am suffering, even to the point of chains, like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. Therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they too may
obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, together with eternal glory. This saying is trustworthy: If we have died with him we shall also live with him; if we persevere we shall also reign with him. But if we deny him he will deny us. If we are unfaithful he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself. ALLELUIA Verse before the Gospel In all circumstances, give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. Gospel Luke 17:11-19 As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” And when he saw them, he said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.” HOMILY PROFESSION OF FAITH
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial
with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen
