Social Justice Thought for the Week:
Lent is an invitation to a journey of naming what is broken within us, turning away from it, and turning toward that which is truly good. The journey begins with acknowledging our failings, limitations, and mortality – all of which takes courage. Pope Francis makes a courageous assessment of our planet when he says “The Earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth.”
All of creation, including humanity, shares a common home. But studies indicate that “most global warming in recent decades is due to the great concentration of greenhouse gases . . . released mainly as a result of human activity,” Pope Francis

says. He names a “throwaway culture” as a root cause of the ecological crisis. We are suffering from pollution and waste, scarcity of water, loss of biodiversity, decline in the quality of life and breakdown of society, extreme consumerism and global inequality. An “ecological debt” exists, particularly between the global north and south, due to the disproportionate use of God’s gifts of water, minerals, and trees. Francis repeats Saint John Paul II’s call to a “global ecological conversion” to care for the needs of the vulnerable, which includes Earth. (Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns)
Prayer of the Week:
Things are topsy-turvy in your kingdom, God. Those living in poverty bear gifts of great worth, the dead rise,
the meek inherit the earth. Teach us how to live in an upside-down world where we are called
to welcome the outcast, prepare a feast for the ragged, and forgive those who offend us.
Amen
Day of Prayer and Fasting for Refugees and Asylum Seekers – Sunday 5 March 2016
Today our Gospel reading tells of Jesus fasting for forty days. Church leaders – of all traditions – invite us to join in a day of prayer and fasting for refugees and asylum seekers. We can join with Christ in prayer for those most vulnerable of God’s people who are seeking safety and security for themselves and their families.
Project Compassion 2017
Dinia’s story is a story of healing, through her own skill and perseverance, and through support from a Caritas-Australia funded program. Living in the Philippines, she struggled daily with poverty in a country with many vulnerable communities. People living in rural and coastal areas have very little access to basic services. They face extreme weather events, environmental degradation and the effects of internal conflict and have little hope of a sustainable income. For Dinia, the untimely death of her husband meant an end to his small income and a greater struggle to feed and educate her children. She struggled alone, facing a future without hope, until her community encouraged her to participate in the Socio Pastoral Action Center Foundation Inc. (SPACFI) program supported by Caritas Australia.
SPACFI’s Integrated Community Development Program helped her develop diverse ways to gain a sustainable livelihood, continue to send her children to school and contribute to her community.
The program foregrounds the need to work together for the common good, awakening Dinia’s innate generosity and leadership qualities. She was able to learn about organic farming, managing livestock, and starting a small business.
Now she has an integral role in her community, a sustainable livelihood, and a brighter future for her children. “My life is much better now. It is much easier,” she says.
Please collect a box or envelope on your way out.

The Lenten Observance
Prayer, almsgiving and fasting are the three pillars of Lenten observance, and it’s not too late to start if you haven’t already, or begin again if you’ve fallen off the wagon!
Fasting, as it’s traditionally prescribed by the Church for healthy adults during Lent, usually means giving up meat (abstaining) on the Fridays, and fasting or eating very lightly plus abstaining on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
We may also choose to give up things such as self-pity, criticism, blaming, gossiping or a favourite activity or habit, while feasting on being kinder, more generous, more thoughtful or more cheerful.
Suggestions for Fasting and Feasting
Fast from discontent; feast on thankfulness. Fast from worry; feast on trust.
Fast from anger; feast on patience. Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others.
Fast from unrelenting pressures; feast on unceasing prayers. Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness. Fast from discouragement; feast on hope.
Fast from media hype; feast on the honesty of the Bible. Fast from idle gossip; feast on purposeful silence.
Fast from problems that overwhelm; feast on prayer that undergirds.

Hello Everyone, Today is the beginning of the LENTEN season. We have challenged the children to give up or take up something
by doing something positive for someone over the 6 week period. The day began with a beautiful Mass and Ashes ceremony. We thank Mrs K Doherty for preparing such a wonderful ceremony. After Mass we offered random children the opportunity to take part in being presented some lovely goodies that included muffins, chocolate and donuts. This table of students represented the part of the world where we have food and can eat whenever we like. The rest of the students were given a handful of boiled rice to represent the millions who have little to nothing to eat. As you can imagine, this little activity made quite an impact on ALL students and brought the message home about the imbalance we have in our world and that they must act to help those in need. We have begun our Cross Country preparation at Centenary Oval each Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting at 8.38am bell-time. We warmly welcome any parent wishing to improve their fitness level and running ability to join us on any day of your choosing. The impact on the students would be profound. I congratulate the staff on their efforts in updating their CPR skills and knowledge. Shannon Townsend, one of our mums was the trainer and led us through the theory and practice. Thank you Shannon and thank you staff for making our school a safer place with this invaluable knowledge. Have a great week-Paul
APRE NEWS – Beginning our Lenten journey We begin the journey to Easter through Lent today. This is a time of reflection, of sacrifice and of prayer as we prepare for the central events in our faith – the Crucifixion and Resurrection – at Easter time. Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits – here in this world and in the world to come.
