St. Anthony’s School Newsletter

“Lighting Pathways for life….”

Migrant & Refugee Sunday: Last weekend we saw people from various cultures wearing

their national dress and symbols representing their culture of origin being placed in front of the altar in gratitude for their courage in coming from afar to Australia. The richness and variety that comes from parishioners of so many cultures is such a gift – all of us together make up the fabric of our St Anthony’s Parish. We have much to be grateful for – brothers and sisters in the family of God.

See more photos on the board in the Community Centre. Prayer of the Week:

Father’s Day Prayer May Joseph who knows the joys and sorrows of Fatherhood

be a guide for your life. May God our father bless you for the care and loving support

given over the years. May Jesus bring you peace of heart for soothing spirits

in times of trouble and failure. May the Spirit gift you with the inner joy needed for healing wounds

and wiping away tears. And may God’s choicest blessings and deepest love be shown to you

through the loving embrace of family. Amen

Hello Everyone, The next two and a half weeks at St Anthony’s will be absolutely full of activity. To begin we have the draw for the 3 night get-away as part of our P&F raffle, being drawn at Assembly on Thursday 1st September (tomorrow). We remind everyone that the Father’s Day Mass will take place this Sunday the 4th of September with the 4/5 classes asked to take the lead at Mass. If your child is in 4/5 we respectfully ask that you avail yourself for this celebration.

Next week, beginning the 5th of September, marks the official return of our summer uniform, remembering, parents have the right and responsibility to continue to send their child in the winter uniform if we suddenly experience a cold snap next week. We’re good but we can’t control the weather! Four of our student leaders will be attending Kids Connect which is a program dedicated to IT knowledge, skills and achievement. This is being held at the new airport at Wellcamp. Next week also marks the Queensland Catholic Primary Principal Association Conference being held in Toowoomba. The theme for the conference is, “Spring into Leadership”. Principals and APREs from across the state will be in attendance. 7th-9th September Parent/Teacher interviews will be held in the last week of this Term, 12th and 13th of September. Teachers have posted timetables on their doors so that parents may select times that suit them. I respectfully request that no teacher is asked to stay at school after dark. This is for their safety. Morning and afternoon options are available to assist working families. Your child’s Portfolio will be the focus of discussion. Largely, Formative assessment will be on display. This is assessment that shows clearly your child’s understanding of concepts at this time. Through Formative Assessment we determine what information must be taught, what your child knows currently and what we have to do to assist your child to understand the content. The Summative Assessment is provided at the end of a unit of

study and shows your child’s understanding of what has been taught. The Portfolio will eventually provide both forms of assessment by the end of each Semester. Ask your teacher to explain further the difference between both forms of assessment if you need to clarify. The last week of school has intense swimming lessons across all year levels, culminating in our swimming carnival on Friday the 16th. All children are expected to attend. This is a normal school day, however, you make take your child home after the carnival. Year 4’s have the Touch Gala Day-Tuesday 13th and a make-up swimming lesson is planned for these students. Paul

Choir This weekend the Choir is invited to support the Year 4 and 5 students as they lead the liturgy at the 8.30am mass. There has been so much going on and I apologise to the children as we have missed many rehearsals lately. To make things even more difficult, I will not be in town this weekend and the children will lead the singing with CD backings. We will practise with the CDs in class time and during lunch hours on Thursday and Friday. Thank you to those families who support the choir so faithfully. We appreciate your help and your beautiful voices. Remember to get a photo to put up on our Photo Board!

Priests Retirement Foundation Appeal – Toowoomba Diocese This weekend, September 3-4, brings us to the annual appeal for the Priests’ Retirement Fund. This appeal has been part of our Diocesan life since 1998 and I commend it to you again this year. Currently we support fifteen retired priests in the Diocese of Toowoomba. These men are in varying stage of ill health and

continue to help out in the mission of the church to the best of their abilities. Due to age/health issues they have forgone their formal Parish appointments but are still very much a valued part of our Diocesan life. The appeal assists them financially and supplements their aged pensions. In 2015 the appeal raised $30,301.00 which was an excellent result. May we do our best to equal or increase that amount this year. Our retirees seek our support as they continue to serve as faithful priests in prayer and active ministry. A worthy response to this appeal will ensure these men a reasonably comfortable lifestyle and serenity in their senior years. Thank you for considering this appeal, and God Bless. You have been handed an envelope with the newsletter, please use today or return in the coming weeks. Fr Michael Cooney Secretary, Priests Retirement Committee Priests who are currently are being assisted from this fund include: Frs. Merv Ziesing, Pat Hall, Tom Sheeran, Ted Hanlon, John Peard, Lino Valente, Don Murray, Kerry Costigan, Michael Skeehan, Mick Carroll, Mick McClure, Brian Sparksman, Tom Keegan, Terry Hickling and John Quinlan. Social Justice Sunday – 25 September 2016: We celebrate Social Justice Sunday on 25 September. This year, the Australian Bishops’ Social Justice

Statement is titled: ‘A Place at the Table: Social justice in an ageing society’. The Statement celebrates the value and dignity of older people in Australian life. It challenges us to recognise their significant contribution to society and emphasises that this contribution should not be valued in mere economic terms. The Statement calls for justice for those who are most vulnerable and warns about a view of older people as burdensome or dispensable.

Statements will be available in the foyer on that day.

Mother Teresa to be canonized Sept. 4

VATICAN CITY -- Pope Francis will declare Blessed Teresa of Kolkata a saint at the Vatican Sept. 4.

The date was announced March 15 during an "ordinary public consistory," a meeting of the pope, cardinals and promoters of sainthood causes that formally ends the sainthood process.

Mother Teresa was widely known as a living saint as she ministered to the sick and the dying in some of the poorest neighborhoods in the world. Although some people criticized her for not also challenging the injustices that kept so many people so poor and abandoned, her simple service touched the hearts of millions of people of all faiths.

Born to an ethnic Albanian family in Skopje, in what is now part of Macedonia, she went to India in 1929 as a Sister of Loreto and became an Indian citizen in 1947. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950.

Shortly after she died in 1997, St. John Paul II waived the usual five-year waiting period and allowed the opening of the process to declare her sainthood. She was beatified in 2003.

The date chosen for her canonization is the eve of the 19th anniversary of her death and the date previously established at the Vatican for the conclusion of the Year of Mercy pilgrimage of people like her who are engaged in works of mercy.

Quotes from Mother Teresa -

If you judge people, you have no time to love them. There are no great things, only small things with great love.

Happy are those who spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.

Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies. If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.

Peace begins with a smile. Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.

I have found the paradox that if I love until it hurts, then there is no hurt, but only more love.

If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one. Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls.
