Come, Holy Spirit of the great South Land.
O God, bless and unite all your people in Australia
and guide us on the pilgrim way of the Plenary Coun-
cil
Give us the grace to see your face in one another
and to recognise Jesus, our companion on the road.
Give us the courage to tell our stories
and to speak boldly of your truth.
Give us ears to listen humble to each other
and a discerning heart to hear what you are saying.
Lead your Church into a hope-filled future,
that we may live the joy of the Gospel.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
bread for the journey from age to age.

PLENARY COUNCIL 2020

Wednesday 26 September 7.30pm in the Church
All are Welcome
Join in the conversation:
1. What do you think God is asking of us in Australia at this time?
2. What questions do you have about the future of the Church for the Plenary Council to consider in 2020?
3. Do you have a story of your experience of faith or the Church you would like to share?
THE BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL – TO SUPPORT THE
RETIREMENT AND HEALTH OF CLERGY: Thank you for
your generous support of this appeal last weekend. A
gift of $1625.30 has been forwarded to Bishop Brian
as our response to his appeal. Donations are still being
gratefully received via today’s first collection and can
be made using the special envelopes provided. This
year’s appeal video can be viewed, and donations can
be made, online via the Diocese of Wollongong’s web-
site www.dow.org.au “I am very grateful for your sup-
port in helping me to ensure that we can provide the
for retirement and health care of our clergy. God bless
you.” Bishop Brian Mascord.
DAY LIGHT SAVING: When daylight saving com-
mences on 7 October, the Vigil Mass will be at
6pm commencing, 13 October.
A VOCATION VIEW: When Jesus says, “Who do people
say I am?” We could interpret this as Jesus asking for
feedback from His disciples about Himself. If you
were to ask Jesus, ‘how would you describe today’s
Christians?’ Please contact the Vocations Team at
FIRST RECONCILIATION PROGRAM 2018: Information
meetings will be held on Tuesday 23 October at 2pm
OR Wednesday 24 October at 7.30pm. Details are
being distributed at St Anthony’s school, at scripture
groups in state schools and will also be available from
the rack in the foyer of the Church
SOCIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY: We celebrate Social Justice
Sunday on 30 September. This year, the Australian
Bishops’ Social Justice Statement is titled: ‘A Place to
Call Home: Making a home for everyone in our land’.
The Statement challenges us all to confront Austral-
ia’s growing rate of homelessness and unaffordable
housing.
For further details about the Social Justice Statement,
visit the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council
website (www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au) or call (02)

PLENARY COUNCIL 2020 – LISTEN TO WHAT THE
SPIRIT IS SAYING. Most Local Animators for parishes
have completed training to enable them to draw par-
ishes into the processes of listening to what the Spirit
is saying. As individuals and parish communities,
there are some simple but important things you can
do right now to participate. Visit the website
www.plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au which provides
great resources that will enable individuals and
groups to learn more, pray for guidance, commence
dialogue and subscribe for regular updates.
YOU DON’T COMPARE?
Competition and comparison – our culture thrives on
them.
Television has made a killing on it in recent years. Who
will win the job as apprentice to the millionaire? Who will
win as the top model? Who will get voted off the island?
Competition can spur us on, but it also can tear us up
inside. Why can’t I look like her? Why can’t I score tries
like him? I know many young people that tear them-
selves down because they constantly focus on how they
don’t measure up to others? We need to stop comparing
ourselves with others and start loving ourselves for who
we are – like God loves us.
In this week’s Gospel, Jesus’ disciples are competing to
be the best. Stop comparing yourself to others, Jesus
tells them. Look inside yourself, get to know your special
talents and use them for the least in our society. Jesus
pulled a child aside because children were valued least
in that society, some Scripture scholars say.
According to Jesus your value doesn’t come from ap-
pearance or popularity or how well you compete. It
comes from God. And if you really want to feel great, go
out into the world and show the people who are not valued just how valuable they are. Is your talent mak-ing kids laugh? Develop it. Are you good at listening and offering comfort? Do that more often. Maybe you like building things. Give your time to help build something for someone who lives on the margins.
So relax. You’ve got nothing to prove. Turn off the reality shows and turn on the Gospel. You’ll feel a lot prouder when you look in the mirror.
What talent or gift do I have or can I develop to help people who need me? (taken from GPBS—Gather Proclaim Break Send)
