Watching the movie “Unplanned” last weekend was eye-opening. I had read the book, but seeing a film adaptation of Abby Johnson’s conversion from Planned Parenthood clinic director to pro-life advocate was very sobering. It is a very compelling story and I encourage everyone to see it. If you are pregnant and scared of what might happen, know that you can reach out confidentially for counseling at standupgirl.com and www.abortionchangesyou.com. If you or someone you love has had an abortion, know that healing is possible in confession and that God loves you. Often times women experience flashbacks, PTSD like symptoms, depression, suicidal ideation, and a host of other terrible side effects after an abortion. The fathers and grandparents may also experience some of these symptoms. These wounds require attention so that people can heal from shame and guilt and be restored to grace. Free counseling is available at https://www.catholiccharitiesoregon.org/strengthen-families/project-rachel/ . There are also weekend retreats designed specifically for post-abortion trauma for both men and women called “Rachael’s vineyard". You can find the next date for a Rachael’s Vineyard retreat for post-abortion trauma healing at http://www.project-aurora.org . Please reach out to our marriage/family life coordinator Angela for additional resources. (http://www.miscarriagehurts.com/) The movie beautifully showed the power of prayer, specifically the "40 days for Life” movement. Because of their prayer, not only did Abby convert, but the clinic she worked at closed in 2013 and became the headquarters of the pro-life movement! There is currently a 40 days for life campaign going on in our neighborhood until Palm Sunday. I firmly believe that this movement has changed the pro-life movement for the better. They are peaceful and prayerful, not condemnatory. While we must strongly protest abortion in our country, at the clinics of Planned Parenthood the women who go there are in need of prayer, kindness, and help. They are victims as well as their unborn children. The abortion clinic workers are also in need of prayer so that, like Abby Johnson, they would realize that abortion never helps women—it simply lines Planned Parenthood’s pockets! After leaving Planned Parenthood, Abby founded “And then there were none” which has helped more than 500 clinic workers leave the abortion industry. Please pray for an end to abortion and perhaps intensify your Lenten penances for this intention or take an hour of prayer in front of the clinic! If you have a passion for pro-life efforts, we are in need of a volunteer pro-life coordinator for our parish—please speak to me or Angela at the office. This week, we begin the practice of ‘veiling’ crosses and statues in the church. This is the last week before Holy Week and the ‘liturgical death’ of images foreshadows the death of Jesus in a tangible way. At Good Friday the cross is unveiled for our veneration, and then at Easter the glory of God bursts forth once again! I encourage you all to participate in the Holy Week liturgies—they are the most powerful and beautiful celebrations we have every year, especially Easter Vigil! If your Lent has been less than stellar, commit today to spending a holy hour at least once this week—daily if possible! You have no idea how much blessing awaits you if you give your time to the Lord! God Bless, Fr. Mark

You’re also invited to stand and peacefully pray during a 40-day vigil in the public right-of-way outside the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic at 3579 Franklin Blvd., Eugene, Oregon 97403 (Glenwood area), and also to help spread the word about this important community outreach.
