Road to Emmaus. On the road to Emmaus, Jesus spoke about his death and

resurrection through the words of the Scriptures, from Moses to the prophets. The two

disciples were prevented to recognize him but their hearts were burning when Jesus

was retelling to them the prophecy.

The two disciples were supposed to find refuge away from Jerusalem. The

pain the passion and death of Christ gave was unbearable they went to find peace

somewhere in Emmaus. But along the way, peace himself found them.

Do we seek our Emmaus? We usually seek peace somewhere. We go to a

place or an occasion that we believe gives us peace. Escape is what it is called. Our

escapes are sometimes helpful but can sometimes lead us to an unhealthy way of

confronting our difficult situations. These escapes make us prone to evil, to the crafty

works of the tempter. So we have to cling to the one source of peace: God.

o0o

When Jesus walked with the two disciples who were grieving their loss, Jesus was providing the peace

they much needed. Jesus is our peace. The Word consoles and the Eucharist strengthens. When he told the

prophecy about the death and resurrection of Christ, their hearts were burning within them. And then they

recognized him when he shared meal with them. In the breaking of the bread, their eyes were opened. What a

joy to find the peace they were looking for.

This Lucan Easter story sketches to us the norm of the Mass where, like the disciples journeying to

Emmaus, we talk about Jesus in the proclamation of the Word and then share the meal in the Eucharist. The

Mass is a privileged place of encounter with Jesus.

This Sunday, the liturgy reminds us, especially the newly initiated members of the Church, of the

important place of the Mass in our Christian formation. We encounter Christ at Mass. Now, if you don’t feel

like going to Mass because Mass is boring, you might need to check why, in the first place, you need to be at

Mass. Very often than not, many of those who feel Mass is boring consider Mass equal to watching TV or

sports or rest.

It is this same reason why many liturgists (and priests) try to “reinvent” the Mass. They want to make

the Mass more “appealing” to the youth, for example. They feel like there is something missing at Mass that

the Catholic church needs to fill so that we will not have a gap in our Mass attendance.

This, too, is the same reason why many Catholics seek from other churches something that they can

“feed” them. They have felt that there is a certain “dryness” in the Catholic worship that is why they have

found themselves in a praise worship format/type of service in a nearby Christian church. There, they said,

they were “fed”.

Today, begin to be fed by the Mass by realizing that the Mass is truly an encounter with Jesus. Do not

look for anything else from the Mass except to listen to the Word of God in the proclamation of the Word and

eat his body and drink his blood in the Eucharist.

o0o

This weekend is Deacon Victor’s last Sunday of internship. He will be at all Masses and if you have

the chance to talk to him, please thank him and send him well wishes and blessings as he continues to pursue

his priestly ministry. He will graduate from the seminary in the weeks to come and then he will return to the

Diocese of Baker where he is a member. His ordination to the priesthood is on June 29 in Bend, Oregon.

Please continue to pray for him.

For the repose of the souls of all the faithful departed:

Camino a Emaús.

Support the Catholic Home Missions Appeal today! Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the

United States are considered home missions because they are unable to fund essential pastoral

work needed in their communities. Your support funds programs—such as religious education,

seminary formation, and lay ministry training—to build vibrant faith communities right here in the

United States. Please be generous. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-

missions.

Seeking a Leader for the Greeters

Are you good at coordinating peo-

ple? We are in need of someone

to take on the leadership of the

Greeters. This would be to coordi-

nate when we have sign-ups to be

greeters in the first place, lead

training sessions, be sure we have

coverage for special events and

the like. It would be across all

Masses - not that the leader has

to be at all Masses, just that they

are the go-to person for schedul-

ing and such. Please call Ace at

the office - 541-926-1449.

Thanks!

Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Saint Joseph the worker – May 1

“Our great saint has a part to play in the Sacred Mystery which the Church presents to us. It was the bread

gained by him that formed, as at least increased, the Blood which was shed on Calvary and which today we

receive at the altar. This bread, transformed into the Flesh of the Son of Man, gives us life. The Sacred Host

comes to us sweetened by the thought of the guardianship which Saint Joseph exercised over it, and the chal-

ice of the Divine Blood carries with it sacred memories of the sufferings and trials of the carpenter of Naza-

reth. (Bishop Peter Anastasius Pichenot). …The Eucharist is the Bread that gives strength.”

Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration is available in the

chapel 24 hours every day. For adoration outside of the 24-hour regular Thursday schedule, call the office

for instructions and to enlist. Everyone is welcome. Spend as much or as little time as you can. Thank you

for offering our Lord this special hour. Expect God's blessing, and give Him thanks.

GOODBYE, DEACON VICTOR MENA!

This weekend is his last weekend. Be sure to stop by

and wish him luck as he heads towards his ordination.

He will be in the Gathering Space after Masses.
