Above: The Dakota County Historical Society in South St. Paul has some new memorabilia in their display case, including an eagle patch, an Airborne Patch, NVA AK47 rounds, dog tags, and an army fatigue jacket with bandolier. The items pictured are on loan from John Lally, who was drafted in 1969. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment and made squad leader and platoon sergeant of the 1st Platoon of “A” Company. He later taught history at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, moved to South St. Paul in 1973, and worked for the state of Minnesota before retiring in 2009. Right: Duane Foss’s medals are displayed as part of the exhibit. Foss was killed in combat while stationed in Vietnam. He was awarded the purple heart twice.

Because. of. all. those.things,. the. historical. so-ciety. decided. to. put. to-gether. a. series. of. exhib-its. telling. the. personal.stories of. sacrifice. and.commitment. made. by.local. veterans.. An. earlier.exhibit. focused.on. veter-ans. from. the. Civil. War.to. the. current. conflicts.in. Iraq. and. Afghanistan,.but.conspicuously. lacked.artifacts. from. Vietnam..Nancy. Hanson,. collec-tions.manager.for.the.his-torical. society,. knew. she.had. to. find. some. Viet-nam. veterans. willing. to.tell.their.stories.
“Seven. gentlemen.graciously. agreed. to.participate,”. she. said,.and “From. the. Front:.II” displayed. their. con-tributions.of.service.”.
It.also.stirred.up.mem-ories. of. seven. more. vet-erans.who.volunteered.to.tell. their. stories.. While.Hanson. was. gathering.their.information,.“From.the. Front:. III” focused.on. how. residents. in. Da-kota. County. lived. in. re-sponse. to. the. Cold. War,.a. frightening. time. when.Americans. feared. that.the. tensions. between.the. U.S.. and. the. Soviet.Union. might. result. in. a.nuclear.war..
Now. “From. the. Front.IV:.Vietnam”.shares.more.stories.of.the.conflict.and.includes. more. artifacts.from.the.war..
“It. first. opened. in.
January. of. 2011,”. said.Hanson.. “It. was. an. in-credibly. emotional. ex-perience. with. visitors.coming. from. around. the.metro. area..The. veterans.were. very. happy. for. the..recognition.”.
All.four.branches.of.the.military. are. represented,.and. the. soldiers’. jobs. re-veal.both.the.physical.and.emotional. range. of. their.responsibilities:. military.police;. military. attorney;.engineering.the.construc-tion. of. an. airfield. in. the.middle.of.a.jungle.out.of.6 foot. metal. slats. within.24.hours;.piloting.planes.during. “Operation. “No. two. guys told. the.same.story,”.said.Hanson..“They. had. different. per-spectives.on.the.war.”
Some. entered. the. war.early,. others. as. it. was.winding. down.. One. vet-eran.who.moved.to.Min-nesota. from. Canada. was.drafted.six.months.later..
“It’s. about. educating.the. public. on. what. hap-pened. in. Vietnam,”. said.Hanson.. “The. United.States.in.the.midst.of.the.Cold. War. with. Russia.was. fearful. (that). Glenn Bocheremembers...
Talking. about. the. ter-rifying. nighttime. attack.in. the. jungles. of. Viet-nam. is. still. difficult. for.South. St.. Paul. resident.Glenn. Boche.. It. hap-pened.36.years.ago.when.he. was. a. member. of. the.Alpha. Unit. of. the. 3rd.Battalion. of. the. Army’s.25th. Infantry. Division..
Boche. points. out. that.Oliver. Stone,. director. of.the.Academy.Award-win-ning movie,. “Platoon,”.was. in. the. Bravo. unit. of.the. same. division,. and.that. the. 25th battalion.had. the. most. killed. and.wounded. of. any army.unit. in. Vietnam.. The.movie’s.panic-ridden.am-bush. scene. is. similar. to.what. Boche. experienced.and.still.can’t.forget..
Just. 24. hours. earlier,.on. Feb.. 18,. he. had. been.hit. by. shrapnel. in. his.left. arm. during. a. small.skirmish.. A. medic. was.able. to. remove. it. and.Boche. was. airlifted. back.to. camp.. He. received. a.Purple. Heart. for. that.wound..That.night.a.bat-talion. meeting. was. held.with. high. ranking. com-manders. in. attendance..Medals. were. awarded,.and. then. an. ominous.message. was. delivered. to.the. troops:. “We’re. going.into.battle.tomorrow.and.some. of. you. guys. won’t.come.back.”.
“I. wrote. my. brother.a. premonition. letter.describing. how. nasty.things.were.and.my. final.thoughts,”.said.Boche..
Amazingly,. he. could.have.sat.it.out.because.of.his.wound.but.he.wanted.to. be. with. his. company..He. stood.by. them. in. the.horrific. attack. and. now.explains. that. he. carries.with. him. a. memento. of.that. battle. in. the. form.of. a. “million. dollar.wound.” During.the.fire-fight,. two bullets. sliced.through his.right calf.and.heel. After.he.was.airlift-
ed.to.safety,.Boche.heard.the. term. “million. dol-lar. wound”. used. for. the.first.time.when.a.nurse.in.one. of. the. military. hos-pitals. used. it. to. describe.his. injuries.. It. means. a.wound. severe. enough. to.go.home,.as.opposed.to.a.more.debilitating.injury.
“I’ve.been.searching.for.the. meaning. of. the. ‘mil-lion. dollar. wound’. for.years,”.said.Boche..“Why.did. I. survive. and. others.have.to.die?”.
It. took. nine. surgeries.to. repair. the. damage. to.his. leg. Boche. received.another.Purple.Heart. for.wounds. received. in. the.ambush,. his. second. in..24.hours.
Before. coming. home.he. contacted. his. family.members. and. told. them.not. to. meet. him. at. the.airport.. He. was. afraid.of. what. they. might. wit-ness.. The. country. had.become. intolerant. of. the.war,.and.had.started.call-ing.the.returning.soldiers.“baby. killers”. and. “drug.addicts.”. He. flew. home.first. class. wearing. his.dress.uniform..Except.for.the. spring. activated. shoe.and. brace. he. was. wear-ing. because. the. nerves.in. his. leg. had. been. sev-ered. and. he. couldn’t. lift.his. foot,. it. didn’t. appear.like. anything. was. wrong.with.him..That.was.good,.because. Boche. said. he.wanted.to.remain.anony-mous..
Once.home,.many.vet-erans. trying. to. return. to.civilian. life. stored. their.wartime.memories. in. the.furthest. recesses. of. their.
minds..“Somehow.I.knew. that.
it.wasn’t.good.to.do.that,”.said. Boche.. “I. was. lost.and. contemplating. be-coming. a. mercenary. sol-dier.—.reading.Soldier.of.Fortune. magazine.. I. was.haunted.by.the.memories,.‘why. me. and. not. them?.Why. did. I. survive?’. War.was. still. following.me.. It.was.Post.Traumatic.Stress.Syndrome,.although.they.didn’t. know. about. it..back.then.”.
It. wasn’t. until. just. a.few.years. ago. that.Boche.started.noticing.a. chang-ing.attitude. toward.Viet-nam. veterans.. Today,. a.new. program. pioneered.by. the. Minnesota. Na-tional. Guard. called. “Be-yond.the.Yellow.Ribbon”.is.geared.toward.changing.how. thousands. of. Min-nesota. soldiers. and. air-men. serving. in. Iraq. and.Afghanistan. are. reinte-grated.back.to.their.com-munities.. The. National.Guard. recognized. that.Vietnam.veterans.had.not.been. properly. welcomed.back. home. or. supported.by.their.government,.and.for. that. reason. the. de-mons.of.war.remain.with.many.of.them.to.this.day..To. avoid. a. repeat. of. this.for. soldiers. returning.from. Iraq. and. Afghani-stan,. the. “Yellow. Rib-bon”.program.has.formed.comprehensive. networks.within. communities. that.connect. and. coordinate.agencies,. organizations,.resources. and. employers.

In mid-June, the city of St. Paul unveiled a new plan to further develop its 17 miles of Mississippi riverfront. Building upon the framework of the Great River Park Master Plan, the city spent about $1 million over the past year to garner advice from consultants and residents alike on ways to link 16 parks and 25 miles of trails and add other amenities to make the riverfront “more natural, more urban and more connected.” The plan, dubbed the “Great River Passage,” is expected to significantly change the riverfront over the next 30 years and help connect more people to the Mississippi River. The previous articles in this 3-part series explored the portions of the plan to make the riverfront more natural and more urban. This month’s article will focus on the “more connected” component.

When. I. was. young. we. spent. Thanksgiving. Day.with. my. father’s. parents.. Both. had. emigrated. from.England. shortly. after. the. turn. of. the. 20th. century,.so.Thanksgiving.Day.wasn’t. something.they.grew.up.with.. For. them,. it. was. a. holiday. they. gratefully. ad-opted.after.their.arrival.in.America.
I. suspect. the.only.difference.between.our.Thanks-giving. dinner. and. that. of. our. friends. and. neighbors.was.that.ours.finished.with.a.traditional.English.plum.pudding.. Otherwise,. our. table. probably. looked. like.everyone.else’s:.a.huge.turkey.(which.my.grandfather.carved.with.great.ceremony),.mashed.potatoes,.sweet.potatoes,.two.or.three.vegetables,.stuffing.and.gravy..The. table.was. filled. to.overflowing,.and.by. the. time.we.pushed.away.from.it.all.we.could.do.was.maneuver.to. the. living. room. and. collapse. in. a. semi-comatose.state.
For. many. of. us,. that’s. what. Thanksgiving. looks.like. today.. We. gather. with. friends. and. family,. say. a.blessing.and.thank-you.for.the.food,.and.then.dig.in..
Thanksgiving.Day,.for.many,.is.a.feast.day.Yet,. for. hundreds. of. thousands. of. people. in. Min-
nesota,.Thanksgiving. Day. is. like. any. other. day.. It’s.a. day. without. enough. food.. On. any. given. day. one.of. eight. Minnesotans. suffers. from. what. experts. call.“food.insufficiency.”.For.many.of.these.people,.unless.they.find.a.place.where.they.can.get.a.free.meal,.they.go.hungry..
In.2008,.Neighbors.Inc.,. joined.with.a.dozen.oth-er. partners. to. begin. The. Walk. to. End. Hunger. on.Thanksgiving. morning.. Our. slogan. is. “Give. back.before.you.give. thanks.”.The.“give.back”.part. comes.with. raising. funds. to.help.hunger-fighting.organiza-tions.like.Neighbors,.Inc..continue.to.provide.food.to.those.in.our.communities.who.are.hungry..
As. is. the. case.with.any.other.walk-a-thon,.partici-pants.solicit.funds.from.their.friends,.relatives,.neigh-bors.and.co-workers.to.support.their.participation.in.the. event.. On. Thanksgiving. morning. they. come. to.the. Mall. of. America. and. enjoy. the. event.. It’s. a. fun.and. festive. morning.. Each. of. the. “hunger. battling”.organizations.that.sponsor.the.event.have.booths,.and.there’s. entertainment.. For. the. last. few. years. Senator.Amy.Klobuchar.and.her.family.have.participated.and.the. Senator. has. greeted. the. crowd. and. talked. about.why.this.event.is.so.important..Registration.starts.at.7.a.m.,.and.the.Walk.continues.until.10.a.m.,.so.there’s.plenty.of.time.to.participate.and.still.get.home.for.the.“give.thanks”.part.of.the.day.
We.make.it.easy.for.you.to.participate.in.a.way.that.works.best.for.you.and.your.family..You.may.partici-pate.as.a.walker,.a.team.captain,.or.just.someone.who.
wants.to.make.a.donation.to.Neighbors,.Inc..in.sup-port.of.the.event..Stop.by.Neighbors,.Inc..and.pick.up.a.copy.of.the.brochure.and.registration.form,.or.call.us.and.we’ll.mail.it.to.you..
We. hope. people. will. recruit. their. own. teams. and.multiply. the.amount.of. funds. raised. for. the.hunger-fighting. effort.. If. participating. on. Thanksgiving.morning.isn’t.possible,.you.may.make.a.contribution.by. sending. a. check. to. Neighbors,. Inc.,. made. out. to.Walk.to.End.Hunger,.or.by.donating.online.at.www.neighborsmn.org. (click. on. the. link. to. the. Walk. to.End. Hunger. registration. site),. or. visit. www.walkto-endhunger.org..
If. you. are. able. to. walk. at. the. event,. come. to. the.Mall. on.Thanksgiving. morning. and. register. on. site..Obviously,.we.hope.that.all.of.our.supporters.will.in-dicate. that. the.money. they. are. raising. or. contribute.is.to.be.credited.to.Neighbors,.Inc..This.is.important.because. there. are. a. lot. of. people. in. our. community.who. are. hungry.. Through. the. first. nine. months. of.2011.the.number.of. families. seeking.assistance. from.the. Neighbors. food. shelf. is. up. 25. percent. over. the.first.nine.months.of.2010..That’s.an.astounding.and.frightening. number.. In. a. year. in. which. most. of. us.hoped. things.were.going. to. improve,. the. reverse.has.been. true. and. we. are. experiencing. the. largest. year-over-year. increase. any.of.us. at.Neighbors. can. recall..So.this.year.more.than.ever. it’s. important. that.all.of.us,.before.we.stop.and.give.thanks.for.that.which.we.have.received,.should.first.give.back.so.that.those.who.are.hungry.can.also.be.fed.

I.picked. up. my. news-letter. from. the. city. of.
South.St..Paul.a.few.weeks.ago.and.perused.it.for.in-formation. on. city. events.and. redevelopment. up-dates.. To. my. surprise,. I.learned. in. reading. the.Housing. and. Redevelop-ment.Authority’s.story.on.Rediscover.South.St..Paul.that.one.of.the.properties.that. was. purchased. and.demolished. to. make. way.for. a. newer. home. was.210.First.Ave..S..“Wait!”.I. said. to. myself.. “That’s.our.house.”.It.had.always.been. there. and. I. im-mediately. regretted. the.fact. that. even. though. I’d.written.the.Glewwe.Fam-ily. History. in. 1999,. I’d.never. thought. to. take. a.picture. of. the. old. home-stead.. It. wasn’t. long. be-fore. I. confirmed. what.I. already. suspected. was.true:. 210. First. Ave.. was.now.a.vacant.lot.
I. tell. this. story.not.be-
cause.I.had.any.real.con-nection. to. the. house.. I’d.never.been.inside.it;.nev-er. owned. it;. never. even.thought. about. it. very.much.. I. just.knew. it.was.there.. It. made. me. real-ize. that. in. a. city. the. size.of. South. St.. Paul,. a. city.with. nearly. 125. years. of.incorporated. history,. ev-ery. house. that. was. built.over. 100. years. ago. has. a.history..
Rediscover. South. St..Paul. has. been. a. remark-ably. successful. program,.with.over.100.new.homes.built.since.1997.and.nine.more. awaiting. construc-tion.. It. always. gives. me.a.feeling.of.pride.to.drive.down.one.of.the.residen-tial.streets.in.the.city.and.spot. a. lovely. new. home.that.has.taken.the.place.of.one. that. was. ready. to. be.replaced..The.new.houses.seem.to.be.perfectly.suit-ed.to.the.old.city.streets..They.fit.right.in.and.look.as. though. they’ve. been. a.part.of.the.neighborhood.for.years..
The. story. also. made.me. reflect. on. the. par-ticular. history. of. the.house.at.210.First.Ave..S..My. grandfather. bought.the. house. in. 1910.. He.founded. Glewwe’s. Gro-cery. Store. in. the. city. in.1904,. and. in. 1907. both.the. store. and. the. family.moved. into. a. building.that. is. still. standing. at.141.Fifth.Ave..S..By.that.time. my. grandparents.had. seven. children,. and.by. the. end. of. 1909,. two.more. were. added. to. the.family,.which.lived.above.the.grocery.store..
My. dad. was. in. first.grade. at. Central. School.when. his. father. bought.the. house. on. First. Av-enue.. Dad. remembered.that.house.and.the.neigh-borhood. with. great. af-fection.. Across. the. street.from.their.new.home.was.the. big. wooden. stair-way. that. led. down. to.the. boarding. houses. and.businesses. on. Concord.Street..A.mile.to.the.south.was.the.little.Baptist.mis-
sion. church. where. the.family. worshiped,. and.Central. School. was. just.five. blocks. away,. up. the.Marie. Avenue. hill.. Two.more. children. were. born.while.the.family. lived.on.First. Avenue.. My. great-grandmother,. Wilhelmi-na. Kloss. Glewwe,. also.lived. with. the. clan. until.her.death.at.the.house.in.October.1912.
Before. my. dad. died. in.1986,.I.drove.around.the.old. neighborhood. with.him,.making.notes.of.the.families. and. stories. he.recalled.. I. loved. the. di-verse. ethnic. names. and.interesting. characters. he.still. remembered,. and.through.his.stories.it.was.easy. for. me. to. imagine.the. unpaved. streets. and.horse-drawn.wagons. that.were. common. when. he.was.a.boy..He.loved.talk-ing. about. Emil. Gardie,.who.owned.the.first.auto-
mobile. my. dad. ever. saw,.an. event. which. led. him.to. found. his. own. auto.sales. and. repair. business.in.South.St..Paul.in.1925..
When.Dad.was.in.sixth.grade,.his. father. sold. the.house. on. First. Avenue.and. the. family. moved.into. the. second. floor. of.the. grocery. store,. which.was.now.located.in.a.larg-er. space.on.the.corner.of.5th. and. Marie. avenues..The.youngest.child.in.the.family. was. born. there. in.1915,.and.all.12.children.and. my. grandparents.lived. there. until. Martha.Glewwe.married.William.Stassen,. Jr.. in. the. sum-mer. of. 1926.. My. grand-father. passed. away. that.December.at.the.relative-ly.young.age.of.58.years,.and. it. wasn’t. long. before.the. remaining. children.were. grown. and. begin-ning.their.own.lives.
The.homestead.on.First.
Avenue. was. just. one. of.the. places. in. town. that.were.a.significant.part.of.my.family’s.history.and.I.was. thrilled. when. HRA.Executive.Director.Bran-na. Lindell. told. me. that.they. had. taken. a. picture.of.the.house.before.it.was.torn. down.. I’ve. included.it. here. as. a. reminder. to.descendants. of. the. city’s.long-time. residents. that.every. old. house. in. the.city. has. a. story. to. tell.about. the. people. who.founded.our. community..Go. and. take. a.picture. of.your. own. family’s. home-stead,. drive. through. the.old. neighborhood,. re-member. the. people. who.once. lived. there. and. be.glad. if. one. day. a. new.house. rises. on. the. old.memories. as. another.generation. of. South. St..Paul. families. puts. down.their. own. roots. in. the..community.
Every home has a history
In recent years this South St. Paul home truly was humble, but in earlier years it was where my dad spent most of his childhood with his parents and 10 of his 11 sisters and brothers. The old house has been demolished to make way for a new home for a new generation of South St. Paul families under the successful Rediscover South St. Paul program of the South St. Paul Housing and Redevelopment Authority. One hundred new homes have been built in the city since the program began in 1997.
