SsangYong Musso

May 2020

BRIEF HISTORY

SsangYong, meaning “double dragon” is a Korean car manufacturer specialising in 4x4s, SUVs and pick-up trucks. Initially established in 1954, SsangYong Motor Company started producing trucks, busses and special purpose vehicles for the export market, establishing the strong and reliable DNA of its products on the market today.

As Korea’s only SUV and 4x4 specialist manufacturer, SsangYong Motors has been committed to refreshing its entire product portfolio and has introduced four entirely new models in four years - Tivoli in 2015, Rexton in 2017, Musso pick-up truck in 2018 and Korando in 2019 – all superseding previous generations, the only thing in common being the name. The brand, which mainly designs and manufactures its own key components including state of the art high-technology engines, will continue its exciting programme of new models stretching into the 20’s, including vehicles with more eco-friendly engines and with pure-electric powertrains.

AN EVOLUTION OF MUSSO DESIGN

In 2018, the Musso was totally revamped and a new generation was borne – Musso is now smarter, safer, and more stylish than ever. Musso had a complete re-design from the ground up, and the only thing in common with its’ predecessor now, is its name.

Musso is an award-winning multi-role four-wheel drive pick-up, blending functionality with style and bold features that project stability and on-road presence. Its striking and impressive, giving Musso an immediate presence.

Musso - which means “rhino” in Korean - takes its strong, tough and powerful image from the brand’s heritage established over 65 years ago and from the original Musso of the 1990s. It is an extremely competent multi-purpose truck with SsangYong values to the core – comprehensively equipped with a sector leading 7-year/150,000-mile warranty, plus a surprising level of interior refinement and great infotainment. It is fair to say that Musso has disrupted the pick-up market with a tough, strong and value-for-money 4-wheel drive proposition.

EXTERIOR DESIGN CUES

Being robust and workman-like is no longer enough for pick-up trucks, with customers looking for a working vehicle that also looks good. The exterior design of the Musso gives the vehicle a bold and muscular stance and adopts the purposeful front-end design of all new SsangYong vehicles.

A bold chrome line across the radiator grille and the curves of the bonnet present a robust look and a

real impression of strength. The shoulder wing grille - now a characteristic styling cue of the brand, stretches out to the headlights, while the dynamic character lines to the side and especially the rear add to its powerful stance.

At over 5 meters (5,095mm), the short-bed Musso is larger than its predecessor in every dimension and gives one of the largest cabin interiors in its class - the long-bed load model adds an additional 310mm in bed length. The load deck affords an extremely useful cargo area that is large enough to accommodate a full-sized Euro pallet in the short-bed, carry a 1-tonne payload and equipped as standard with a tough fitted load liner, a 12V/120W power outlet and rotating hooks to help strap-down loads such as tools and equipment on both short-bed and long-bed variants. Both short and long-bed models carry a payload of over 1-tonne and tow trailers of up to 3.5-tonnes (automatic) concurrently to give the highest total load capacity in the segment.

There are sporty fog lamps and daytime running lights on all models, and stylish roof bars on the Rebel, Saracen and Rhino. The doors are designed to cover the sills along the lower part of the body to ensure

passengers don’t pick up dirt from the side of the vehicle when getting in and out, while bold silver 18-inch wheels on the Rebel and Saracen tell you this is no ordinary pick-up.

Designed to carry passengers in comfort and transport loads securely, the SUV-based Musso combines a five-seat crew-cab body style with a workman-like load deck of a utility pick-up and SUV means Musso offers the perfect blend of functionality, practicality, performance and comfort to the driver and family or workmates.

Musso Rhino LWB has an extra 310mm in the load area

The overall length of the Musso Rhino long bed drives in at 5,405mm, with an extended wheelbase of 3,210mm and an overall width the same as the short bed at 1,950mm.

Short bed dimensions above.

INTERIOR DESIGN CUES

Inside, Musso is exceptionally well equipped compared with other pick-ups, and as well as offering excellent shoulder and leg room front and rear, Nappa leather seats can be found on the top of the range models for added luxury and comfort. DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity feature across the range, while all but the entry level model feature a state-of-the-art infotainment system that includes an 8-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Wi-fi mirroring, or 9.2-inch screen with TomTom navigation on top line models.

Based on the new Rexton, the interior of the Musso is offers a very high standard of detailing, fit and finish. Perhaps unexpectedly for a utility vehicle, it brings a level of refinement and contemporary ambiance that’s more akin to a premium SUV yet still feels robust and durable, complementing the exterior look of a pick-up.

Most models feature heated front seats which on the top models are also ventilated and electrically operated to make long journeys more pleasant whatever the temperature, together with a leather covered and heated steering wheel which will be greatly appreciated on a bitterly cold winter’s morning.

With one of the most spacious interiors in its segment, the second row of seats is designed for three

passengers to travel comfortably with class-leading leg and elbow room. Musso offers generous levels of equipment along with cutting edge integrated design technologies. Its interior achieves a balance between comfort and control – a perfect equilibrium offering generous space, contemporary luxury and impressive technology.

TOTAL LOAD CAPACITY

Most pick-ups can’t tow a trailer at maximum weight and carry a full payload at the same time, but Musso and Musso Rhino are different from most pick-ups. With a class-leading gross train weight of 6450kg (manual), 6750kg (automatic) and 6900kg (Rhino) Musso has the highest total load capacity of any pick-up on sale in the UK.

PERFORMANCE

Musso is powered by the same e-XDi220 engine found in the Rexton and delivers a maximum power of 181ps at 3,800rpm and a maximum torque of 420Nm at 1,600 to 2,600rpm. This highly efficient, quiet and proven engine delivers progressive acceleration from a standing start, and strong low-end torque typical of SsangYong power units.

Musso achieves a CO2 emission level of 216 (NEDC) and economy of up to 29.4 mpg on the WLTP combined cycle and achieves 0-62mph in 11.9 seconds (auto) and 11.3 seconds (manual). The power train has been proven to deliver outstanding output in the low to mid-range.

Musso is available with either a 6-speed manual or an Aisin 6-speed automatic with its success proven by SsangYong and several other automotive brands.

· Integrated transmission control unit (TCU) improves electronic control reliability

· The latest controller area network (CAN) accelerates electronic signal exchange

· Variable compression solenoid provides dynamic gear-shifting performance

· Acceleration is increased by skipping gears when downshifting

· Pendulum absorber broadens engine speed range

· Slip control of the lock-up

4-WHEEL DRIVE

The LCV’s 4-wheel drive system draws on SsangYong’s years of experience in all-wheel-drive technology. For better efficiency and greater fuel economy, it features a selectable 4-wheel drive system with power delivered permanently to the rear wheels, and front wheel drive dialed in electronically as required, with high and low ratios available as on and off-road conditions demand. The system includes hill descent control and hill start assist to provide optimum grip, traction and safety.

For better efficiency and greater fuel economy, the car features part time 4-wheel drive with power delivered permanently to the rear wheels. Front wheel drive can be selected electronically as required with high ratio, and low ratio chosen as and when the off-road conditions become more demanding.

With primary drive to the rear wheels, the ride, handling and driving stability are enhanced thanks to the well-balanced weight distribution, and a combination of double wishbone suspension at the front

and 5-link independent suspension at the rear (short-bed) on models with automatic transmission deliver great ride-quality. The standard wheelbase Musso has a front double-wishbone & rear multi-link suspension - advanced independent suspension in the rear and a DUP in front. The system provides optimal grip on uneven road surfaces for solid handling and the high-mounted upper arm enhances handling at high speed and ride quality. The conventional multi-link suspension system has three

transverse links and one longitudinal link per wheel, while the upgraded version, with a total of five links, is found on high-end vehicles to ensure the best ride quality. Musso Rhino LWB carries over front double wishbone suspension matched to a leaf spring rear end matched to its substantial carrying and towing capabilities.

Part-time 4-wheel drive allows the driver to choose when to activate the system, depending upon changing road conditions. The vehicle normally runs in two-wheel-drive mode, and when necessary, the driver may switch the drivetrain over to either 4-wheel drive: high-speed (4H) or 4-wheel drive: low-speed (4L). In 4-wheel drive, the torque from the engine is distributed evenly for the front and rear wheels. In 2-wheel drive (2H) mode is preferred under normal operating conditions, 4-wheel drive high-range (4H) mode is used when the roads are icy or wet, or when driving off-road. In 4-wheel drive: low-range (4L) mode delivers the most torque, when maximum towing capacity is required.

The front-wheel-drive system excessively concentrates vehicular weight toward the front, whereas the rear-wheel- drive system distributes the weight appropriately front and rear, which improves handling stability. The rear-wheel drive advantages and 4-wheel drive function are maximised for optimal driving performance under diverse road conditions. The vehicular weight is concentrated on the rear wheels when starting out and accelerating, increasing the tyre grip on the drive wheels, which are in the rear, for better acceleration performance.

Front-wheel drive means the front wheels are both the drive wheels and used for steering. Thus, the driving trajectory will change for an instant when slowing down or speeding up during cornering, and

this will detract from handling stability. A rear-wheel drive system lets the front wheels do only the steering, resulting in superior cornering performance.

Ideal for those wishing to tow a double horsebox, large caravan or commercial trailer, the Musso has a strong ladder chassis providing a substantial towing platform - a mighty towing capacity of 3,500kg, and a kerb weight of 1,990-2,100kg, particularly important for anyone towing a heavy caravan.

It also features special electronic safety aids when driving off road such as hill start assist and hill decent control and is best-in-class for approach and departure angles of 20.2 degrees and 22.5 degrees respectively and 19.5 & 20.5 for the Rhino.

NOISE, VIBRATION AND HARSHNESS (NVH)

Starting with the truck’s rigid body on frame construction and the fitment of eight body mounts and large rubber engine mounts, the Musso has also been carefully tuned by Pininfarina to ensure that the noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels are excellent. Polyester wheel-arch linings reduce road noise so passengers can travel in comfort, the engine bay includes better sealing to improve sound, dust and waterproofing, while wind noise is reduced thanks to detailing such as fourfold door sealing and aerodynamically designed wiper blades.

Musso’s NVH levels are much improved over its predecessors, due to its stiffer body, improved aerodynamics to reduce wind noise, better engine isolation by means of eight body mounts which have been newly designed to lower chassis and body vibration reducing road and tyre noise.

Technological expertise as a specialist in SUV manufacturing has achieved car-like cabin quietness. Conventional wheel housings are made from polypropylene, a commodity plastic material, but high-end vehicles like Rexton, have wheel housing made from woven polyester (PET), with excellent sound

absorbing properties that keep road noise from entering the cabin. Quadruple-layered seals are applied at the top and bottom of the doors and windows block out road noise and wind noise more effectively.

ADVANCED SAFETY SYSTEMS

With new technologies and features, the new SsangYong Musso ensures excellent levels of safety and

includes six airbags on all models. With the high-strength steel construction of its quad-frame, the vehicle is stiffer than its competitors, achieved by using 1.5Gpa-grade ultra-strength steel - a world first, and featuring 79.2% high density steel. This not only gives greatly improved body strength but also reduced weight.

The pick-up also features impact absorbing elements in the steering wheel and steering column to minimise injuries from a frontal collision, while the structure and materials employed in the frontal area of the body are designed to improve pedestrian safety.

Passenger safety has been a top priority for the SsangYong Musso, a vehicle's "crash zone" is where most of the force from a frontal collision is transferred to the occupants in the cabin. Musso's crash zone is specially designed to absorb the brunt of the force, thereby protecting the people inside.

The SsangYong Musso benefits from the latest in safety technology, its advanced features working to protect occupants, other road users and pedestrians, both in determining the risk of an impending accident and in the event of a collision.

Other safety features include rain sensing wipers, automatic speed sensing door locks, a tyre pressure monitoring system, two-stage front seatbelt pre-tensioners with a warning reminder on all five seat belt positions, and ISOFIX fittings to outer rear seats, safety power windows, parking aid system.

· Steering wheel - The steering wheel and steering column are designed to absorb the force of a collision, minimising the effect on the driver’s chest area

· Airbags - Available with up to 6 airbags for maximum passenger protection on impact. These include a knee-airbag for the driver and rear passenger side and curtain airbags – safety features normally only found in prestige vehicles

· Electronic Brakeforce Distribution Anti-lock Brake System (EBD ABS) - EBD-ABS distributes brake force appropriately to the front and rear wheels according to the vehicle’s load of passengers and/or cargo

· Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) - ESP constantly monitors road conditions and vehicle status and automatically adjusts engine output and braking whenever the driver is about to lose control. It integrates the ABS, active rollover protection, anti-slip regulation and brake-force assist

· ISOFIX - The vehicle is equipped with ISOFIX child-seat mountings to the rear outer seats to ensure that child seats are attached firmly and rigidly

· Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) - Tyre pressure monitoring is built into Musso’s electronics and displayed via the trip computer. Each tyre is continually checked for pressure and the driver is immediately warned of unsafe readings

· Lane Change Assist (LCA) - LCA detects vehicles approaching rapidly from behind and flashes a warning light on the outside mirror to alert the driver. Available on Rhino specification.

· Blind Spot Detection (BSD) - BSD senses vehicles coming up in the blind spot behind or alongside the car and warns the driver via a flashing light on the outside mirror. Available on Rhino specification.

· Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) - RCTA assists the driver when reversing by detecting the presence of vehicles approaching behind on either side. Available on Rhino specification.

MULTIMEDIA

The Musso doesn’t just offer real advances on-road and off-road, it also offers them on-screen. All models feature an advanced infotainment system that includes DAB radio, Bluetooth and MP3 connectivity, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come with the middle and top specification models, as does a rearview reversing camera. Everything is displayed on either an 8.0” screen or a 9.2” screen with TomTom navigation on the top models. Carbon nanotube front speakers, front door tweeters and rear door speakers are also fitted. Other standard features include an adjustable tilt & telescopic steering wheel, electric windows, cruise control, central locking, and air-conditioning with fine dust filters.

VIEW FROM THE TOP

Commenting on the revised model Musso line-up and the introduction of the long-bed Rhino, Nick Laird managing director of SsangYong Motor UK said: “Back in 2018, SsangYong set new standards for a value-priced pick-up, with the launch of Musso. The updated 20-model year Musso and the introduction of a long-bed truck, is further evidence of the brand’s re-generation. It demonstrates the rapid progress being made as a specialist producer of pick-ups and SUVs. The Musso is great value for money, is extremely well equipped. It has distinctive look, like all SsangYong models, and boasts an array of advanced safety and infotainment technologies.”

“SsangYong is Korea’s third largest SUV brand & has over 60 years-experience of making refreshingly different cars. Along the way, we’ve learnt a thing or two about what customers really need. So instead of wasting money on marketing gimmicks or add-ons, we offer a full range of truly refined & high-spec SUV’s that absolutely deliver on the road.”

“Our ‘badge’ may be less well known, but what SsangYong lacks in current recognition, we more than make up for with cars that offer huge value without ever feeling compromised. We also have so much

faith in our build quality, that we offer a full 7-year/150,000-mile warranty so customers can be quietly confident that they’ve made the right choice when it comes to the things that really matter. We are sure that, with the new Korando, we have a vehicle that has the potential to upstage some much bigger names in the marketplace.”
