RUNNING-IN PERIODThere are no particular brake-in rules foryour new Musso. However, following a fewsimple precautions for the first few hundredkilometers can add to the good future per-formance, economy and long life of yourMusso.

• Do not race the engine.• While driving, keep your engine speed

(RPM) below the red zone.• Avoid full-throttle starts.• Avoid hard stops, except in emergencies.

This will allow the breaks to bed in prop-erly.

• Drive at varying speeds, trying not to“strain” the engine.

• Refrain from towing a trailer or an othervehicle.

• Avoid harsh operations such as abruptstart, sudden acceleration and prolongedhigh speed driving.These operations not only have a detri-mental effect on the engine but alsocause excessive fuel and oil consump-tion, which could result in the malfunc-tion of the engine components. Especially,avoid full-throttle acceleration in lowgear.

BEFORE ENTERING THE CAR• Ensure that windows, outside rear view

mirrors and lights are clean, undamagedand unobstructed.

• Visually note inflation condition of tyres.• Check that all lights, switches and con-

trols work properly.• Check the area behind the vehicle if you

are about to reverse.• Check under the vehicle for leaks.• Check the engine oil level and other fluid/

oil levels in engine compartment.

BEFORE DRIVING OFF• Be sure you understand your car and

its equipment and how to operate itsafely.

• Adjust your seating position.• Adjust inside and outside mirrors.• Ensure that all occupants of the car

have fastened their seat belts.• Check the operation of the warning

lights when the ignition key is turned to“ON” position.

• Check all gauges.• Release the parking brake and ensure

that the brake warning light goes out.

WARNING

Check to ensure that all light, signal-ing systems and warning indicatorsare in working order.

In case of loss, replacement keys areavailable from Ssangyong Dealersby quoting the key number.To protect your car from theft, anelectronic immobilization system hasbeen installed in your Musso. Onlykeys with correct electronic code canbe used to start the car. Even if a keyhas the same profile, it will not startthe engine if the electronic code isincorrect.Always obtain replacement of addi-tional keys from your SsangyongDealer.

KEYTwo keys are provided which fit all key cyl-inders. Keep one of the two keys as aspare. The key number is stamped on thekey number plate. For vehicle security keepthe key number plate in a safe place, not inthe vehicle. You should also record the keynumber in a safe place, not in the vehicle.This deters unauthorized persons from ob-taining a duplicate key.

KEY WITH INTEGRATED TRAN-SPONDER AND ILLUMINATION*On vehicles equipped with an ImmobilizerSystem, two keys with illumination and inte-grated transponder are provided. Keep oneof the two keys as a spare.The keys with illumination help you insert theignition key at night. To use it, press the lightswitch of key knob.The key number is stamped on the key num-ber plate. For vehicle security, keep the keynumber plate in a safe place, not in the ve-hicle. You should also record the key num-ber in a safe place, not in the vehicle.

REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRYSYSTEM (REKES)You can lock or unlock all the doors by us-ing REKES.To check the operation of REKES, the tell-tale lamps come on twice for 0.5 second,when locking, and once for 1 second, whenunlocking.

NOTE

Do not get the transmitter wet.Avoid shock to the transmitter.If you lost the transmitter and re-placed with new, the correct codemust be newly programmed for theoperation.

Battery ReplacementIf the LED fails to illuminate, the transmittercan still be used for a while. However, it isan indication that a new battery is needed.

Use a CR2032 battery for replacement andadopt the following replacement procedure:

1. Unscrew the screw from the rear cover.2. Remove the battery, taking care to avoid

touching the circuit board or other com-ponents.

3. Fit the new battery, ensuring that cor-rect polarity is maintained (positive (+)side facing down towards the base).Finger marks will adversely affect bat-tery life ; if possible, avoid touching theflat surfaces of the battery and wipethem clean before fitting.

4. Reassemble the cover of the transmit-ter.

5. Check the transmitter operation.

CAUTION

Used lithium battery can be a haz-ard to health and the environment.• Do not dispose of used battery with

household waste.• Check with local authority or

Ssangyong Dealer for safe dis-posal facilities.


CAUTION

Transmitter can be damaged.• Do not reverse the polarity.• Avoid dropping.• Do not place heavy objects on it.• Keep transmitter away from water

and direct sun light.

NOTE

If transmitter gets wet, wipe it withsoft cloth.

DOOR LOCKSFront doors can be locked or unlockedfrom outside by using the key.To lock, turn the key towards the front ofthe vehicle.To unlock, turn the key towards the rear ofthe vehicle.

CAUTION

Lock all doors and tailgate whenleaving the vehicle unattended.

Each door can be locked or unlocked fromthe inside by pushing or pulling the door lockbutton.

Each door can be locked from the outsideby pushing the door lock button then clos-ing the door.

To open the door from the outside, turn thekey and pull the door handle upward.

To open the door from the inside, lift the doorlock button and pull the inside door handle.

WARNING

Never leave children or animals un-attended in the vehicle.• They can move the vehicle unex-

pectedly.• They can be suffocated in espe-

cially hot weather.


KEY HOLE ILLUMINATION*The key hole illumination lamp is fitted aroundthe ignition key hole. If either front door isopened, the lamp turns on to help driver in-sert ignition key and goes out or ignition keyis turned to “ON” position.

CENTRAL DOOR LOCKINGSYSTEMYou can activate the central door lockingsystem from driver’s or passenger’s door.

This system allows you to lock and unlockall the doors from the driver’s or passenger’sdoor, using either the key or keyless remote(from outside) or the door lock button (frominside).

AUTOMATIC DOOR LOCKINGSYSTEMAutomatic door lockingAll the doors will be automatically lockedwhen you drive over 50km/h.

Automatic door unlockingIf you turn the ignition switch to ‘OFF’ all thedoors will be unlocked automatically.

CAUTION

Automatic door locking system maynot function when the door or/andbody is deformed by collision.

AUTOMATIC DOOR LOCKINGRELEASEIf the vehicle speed is above 15km/h at theevent of collision, all doors and tailgate areunlocked automatically.


TAILGATE LOCKSTailgate can be locked or unlocked fromoutside by using the key.To lock, insert the key into the key slot andturn it counter-clockwise.

To unlock, turn it clockwise.To open the tailgate from outside, lift it upwith tailgate handle pressed when it is un-locked. Two air-pressurized support rodswill hold tailgate open. If the tailgate is locked,the tailgate handle can not be pressed.To close the tailgate from outside, lowerand press down on it.Make sure it is securely closed and latched.

To open the tailgate from inside, lift the lockbutton and pull the door lever upward.

CHILD SECURITY DOOR LOCKSChild security locking helps prevent reardoors from being accidentally opened bychildren in the car.Child security door locks are provided withboth rear doors.When the child-safe lever is in “LOCK” po-sition, the door can not be opened from theinside.Moreover, the inside door catch will befixed at the locking position and can not bepulled.Rear doors locked with the child safemechanism can still be opened from theoutside if the door button is in the unlockposition.

Children in rear seats can open reardoors.• Move child security door lock

latch to lock position.

when using child security doorlocks.

POWER WINDOWSYou may operate the power windows whenthe ignition switch is ON by using the powerwindow switches on each door panel. Driver’s window

The driver’s window has AUTO down.• To lower the window, press down firmly,

then release the switch.The window will open automatically un-til it is fully open. To stop the windowwhile it is opening, press the switchagain.

• To raise the window, pull up and holdthe switch. To stop the window releasethe switch.

POWER WINDOW LOCK SWITCHIf this switch is pressed, all door windowsare operated only by driver’s door windowswitches. To deactivate, press the switchagain.

WARNING

Accidental closing of the power win-dow can result in serious injury.• When carrying children on the

rear seat, press the rear door win-dow lock switch to make the reardoor switches inoperative.

• Do not allow children to play withthe power window switch and reardoor window switches.

WARNING

Parts of the body can be trapped inpower window and struck by passingobjects.• Keep a close watch on the windows

when closing them.• Do not stick hands, head or any-

thing else out of the opening.

WARNING

Always remove the ignition key whenleaving the car to avert the risk ofinjury arising from unattended chil-dren operating the windows.

NOTE

The operation of power window canbe continued for 30 seconds evenafter turning the ignition switch off.

Passenger’s and rear door windowTo lower the window press down on theswitch.To raise the window lift up the switch.Release the switch when the windowreaches the desired position.

Passenger ’s and rear door windowswitches are located on each door to op-erate the corresponding door window.To lower the window press down on theswitch.To raise the window lift up on the switch.Release the switch when the windowreaches the desired position.

POWER SUN ROOF*Before operating the sun roof you first haveto open the roll blind by pressing the grip up.You can use the sun roof in two ways withthe ignition “ON”.

Sliding the Sun RoofTo open or close, press and hold the switchlocated in the front of the roof panel. Re-lease the switch when sun roof reaches thedesired position.

Tilting Up the Sun RoofTo tilt up (vent position) or close the sunroof, press and hold the switch until thedesired position is reached.

TILTABLE STEERING WHEELThe steering wheel can be adjusted up ordown to the desired position. To adjust thesteering wheel, pull up the control lever,adjust the wheel up or down to the properposition, release the control lever to lock thewheel in place.

WARNINGWhen leaving the vehicle unattended,close the sun roof fully.

WARNING

Care must be taken when operatingthe power sun roof. There is a risk ofinjury, particularly for children, anda danger that limbs or articles couldbecome trapped in sun roof.Ensure the sun roof opening is clearbefore closing it.

WARNING

Debris on the sun roof can damageoperation.• Clean the sun roof before opening.• Remove water drops, snow, ice or

sand from on top of the sun roofbefore opening.

• Do not place heavy objects on thesun roof or surrounding area.

POWER OUTSIDE REARVIEWMIRRORSAdjust the outside rear view mirrors with theadjusting switches so that you can see notonly each side of the road behind you butalso each side of your vehicle. This helpsyou determine the location of objects seenin the mirror.

You may adjust the outside rearview mirrorsup or down and left or right using the mirrorswitch located on the driver's door panel.The ignition switch must be ON to adjust themirrors.

1. Select the mirror as you want to adjustby using the left/right switch located in-side the mirror adjustment pad, to the leftfor left mirror or to the right for rightmirror.

2. Adjust the selected mirror up, down, left,or right using the corresponding edgesof the mirror adjustment pad.

WARNING

Parts of the body protruding fromthe vehicle can be struck by passingobjects.Do not stick hands, head, or anythingelse out of the sun roof opening.


WARNING

Side convex mirrors make objects ap-pear smaller and farther away thanwhen viewed in a flat mirror.• Use the inside mirror to determine

the size and distance of objectsseen in the side mirror.

• Maintain rearward vision fromdriver’s seating position.

CAUTION

Glass surface may be damaged.Do not scrape ice from mirror face.

CAUTION

Do not force mirror to adjust if iceshould restrict movement of mirror.Use deicer, spray, or blower to re-move ice.

CAUTION

Adjust mirror angles before driving.

OUTSIDE REARVIEW MIRRORSThe outside rearview mirror on thepassenger’s side is convex if it says “OB-JECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THANTHEY APPEAR”. Use this mirror to get awider view of the road behind.

Foldable Outside Rearview MirrorIf necessary, the outside rearview mirror canbe folded flat to the rear by pushing themrearward when driving on narrow roads orwashing the vehicle, etc..

CAUTION

All round vision can be impaired,increasing potential for accidents.• Adjust mirror angles before driv-

ing.• Check glass surface for damage.• Use deicer, spray or blower to re-

move ice.


NOTE

Automatic dimming function will beoperated when the ignition switch isturned “ON” or the engine is run-ning.

AUTOMATIC DIMMIING INSIDEREARVIEW MIRROR*At night, when the glare is too high, the mir-ror automatically responds to variations inlight, changing from no antiglare to antiglareas required. The sensor under the mirrorautomatically detect the glare from head-lights behind you and reduce the glare.

INSIDE REARVIEW MIRRORThe inside rearview mirror can be adjustedup, down or side ways to obtain the bestview. The inside mirror has day and nightpositions.Make adjustment while the adjusting leveris in the daytime position.Move the adjusting lever to the night posi-tion to reduce glare from the headlights ofvehicles behind you.

CAUTION

Maintain rearward vision fromdriver’s seating position.• Select day position and adjust to

obtain best view.• Select night position to reduce

night glare.• Selecting night position may re-

duce rearward clarity.

NOTE

Remember that you lose some rear-view clarity in the night position.

FRONT SEAT SLIDE ADJUSTMENTTo move the seat forward or backward, pulland hold the seat slide lever up and movethe seat as required. Then, release the le-ver in desired position.

WARNING

Control of vehicle can be lost.Do not adjust driver’s seat while ve-hicle is moving.

WARNING

Excessive seat belt slack could re-duce effectiveness of seat belts.Adjust front seat before fasteningseat belt.

WARNING

Lose objects can interfere with seat-slide mechanism.Do not place objects under seat.

FRONT SEAT RECLININGADJUSTMENTTo change the seat back angle, lean for-ward slightly and raise the lever. Then leanback to the desired angle and release thelever. After adjusting, make sure the leveris returned to its original position; otherwise,the seat back could unlatch while the ve-hicle is in motion, causing the drive to losecontrol of the vehicle.


DRIVER’S SEAT WARMER*Warm the driver’s seat in the cold weatherfor your comfortable driving.Press the ‘HI’ or ‘LO’ portion of the switchto warm the backrest and cushion.To turn the switch OFF, press the selectedportion, ‘HI’ or ‘LO’ again.

WARNING

Control of vehicle can be lost.Do not adjust seat back when vehicleis moving.

WARNING

Occupants can slide under seat belts.• Do not recline seat back too much.• To get maximum protection, adjust

seat back as upright as you can.

DRIVER’S SEAT HEIGHTADJUSTMENTTo adjust the height of front seat, push thelock knob and pull up the control lever. Then,raise or lower the seat as required by seat-ing on driver’s seat (applying load).


FRONT SEAT BACK STORAGEPOCKETThe front seat back storage pocket is pro-vided to store small items.

SEAT LUMBAR SUPPORTTo adjust driver’s lumber support, move thelever until the desired angle is achieved.Move the lever downward to increase theamount of lumber support.To decrease it, raise the lever progressivelythrough the other position.

8-WAY POWER SEAT (DRIVER’S)*If your Musso is fitted with a power seat itcan be controlled by the power seat controllever which is located on the left side ofdriver’s seat.


DRIVER’s SEAT TILTADJUSTMENT*To adjust the front and/or rear portion of thecushion respectively, move the front and/orrear of the control lever upwards or down-wards separately.

DRIVER’s SEAT SLIDEADJUSTMENT*To move the seat forwards or backwardselectrically, slide the control lever forwardsor backwards.Then, slide the seat electrically to the de-sired position and release the control lever.

DRIVER’s SEAT HEIGHTADJUSTMENT*To adjust the driver’s seat height, move thecontrol lever upwards or downwards. Raiseor lower the seat electrically as required byseating on the driver’s seat (applying load).


DRIVER’s SEAT RECLININGADJUSTMENT*To adjust backrest angle, move the switchin the direction of the arrows.Press the top of the switch forward to movethe backrest forward and press the top ofthe switch backward to move the backrestrearward.

CAUTION

• Control of vehicle can be lost.• Do not adjust driver’s seat while

vehicle is moving.

CAUTION

• Excessive switch operation couldcause battery discharge.

• Operate the electric seat while theengine is running.

• Avoid the multi-operation of thedriver’s seat, it can damage themotor. Be sure to operate the elec-tric seat in order.

HEAD RESTRAINTSHead restraints are designed to help reducethe risk of neck injuries.For maximum protection, slide the head re-straint up or down so the top of therestraint is level with the top of your ears.To lower the front head restraint, press therelease button on top of seatback and pushit down.To raise the front head restraint, pull it upwithout pressing the release button.

WARNING

Removed or improperly adjustedhead restraints can result in serioushead and neck injuries in case of acollision.


RECLINING REAR SEAT BACKThe rear seat backs can be reclined sepa-rately for the comfortable driving of passen-gers.Pull up the adjustment levers and reclinethe seat back to the desired position.Then, release the adjustment lever to lockthe seatback into position.

To remove the head restraint1. Pull it up to the stop position.2 While pushing the release button3. Lift the head restraint from the guide

sleeve.

WARNING

Make sure that the head restraintare in place and adjusted beforedriving.

FOLDING REAR SEATTo fold the rear seat to increase luggagespace:

1. Remove the side armrests.2. Make sure seatback erect with pulling

the lever forward.3. Fold the seatback forward with pushing

the lever forward.

WARNING

To help avoid injuries, make sureyour hand and any other body parts,as well as those of other persons, arecompletely away from the rear seatcompartment when folding the rearseat.


4. Make sure the seat erect with pushingthe levers from the right to the left.3

5. Pull the strap located at the bottom of theseat cushion across the seat.

6. Fit the attachment crook to the hook onthe floor, rear of the console.

UNFOLDING REAR SEATTo return the rear seat to its original position:

1. Unhook the crook of the strap from thehook at the rear of the console.

2. Secure the strap in its proper location.3. Lower seat, allowing it to drop from

height of about 8inches (20cm).4. Pull the seat upward to make sure the

seat is securely latched.5. Lift rear seatback and push to original

position.6. Latch the seatback into place by

pushing on the top of the seatback.7. Pull the seatback forward again

to make sure the seatback is securelylatched.

SIDE ARMRESTPull or push the armrest to raise or lower it.To remove the armrest, lower the armrestand pull it out while pushing the side buttonon the armrest.To install the armrest, insert the bar on thearmrest into the seat hole while pushing theside button.

WARNING

• Do not stack luggage or othercargo higher than the front seats.

• Do not allow passengers to sit onthe folded seatbacks while the ve-hicle is in motion.

• Unrestrained luggage or passen-gers on a folded seatback can bethrown about within or ejectedfrom the vehicle in a sudden stopor accident.

• Serious injuries or death can re-sult.

WARNING

Ensure that the rear seatbacks andrear seat cushion are locked in po-sition before operating the vehiclewith passengers in the back seat.Do not press the release buttons onthe seatback while the vehicle ismoving.Pressing the release buttons whilethe vehicle is moving can cause in-juries or damage to the occupants.

WARNING

To help avoid injuries, make sureyour hand and any other body parts,as well as those of other persons, arecompletely away from the rear seatcompartment when unfolding therear seat.

8. Make sure the seat belts are not twistedor caught in the seatback and are ar-ranged in there proper position.


WARNING

Occupants could be injured seri-ously in collisions or sudden maneu-vers.• Wear seat belts at all times when

driving or riding.• Never use a belt for more than one

person at a time.• Do not wear seat belt over hard or

breakable objects in pockets or onclothing.

CENTER ARMREST*The center armrest can be folded down foruse when there are only 1 or 2 rear seatpassengers.The center armrest is equipped with consolebox.To open the console box, pull the lock knobupward under the cover.

SEAT BELT PRECAUTIONSTo protect you and your passengers in theevent of an accident, it is compulsory thatthe seat belts are worn by all occupantswhile the vehicle is in use. Seat belts shouldbe worn correctly.Each seat belt is designed to be used byonly one person at a time : they are notsuitable for use by children below 6 yearsof age. Suitable child seats/booster cush-ions should be fitted.

CAUTION

Improper use of seat belt can causemore serious injury.• Do not modify the seat belt.• Do not add adjusting device which

restrict removing slack.

CAUTION

Damaged seat belts can cause moreserious injury.• Repair or replace damaged seat

belts immediately.• Never let the seat belt system be-

come damaged by a door or seat.


Care of Seat BeltsAlways keep the seat belts clean and dry.Care should be taken to avoid contaminationof the webbing with polishes, oils andchemicals, and particularly battery acid.Cleaning may safely be carried out using mildsoap and water.Do not bleach or dye belts since this mayseverely weaken them. Make sure that thebelt is not damaged or trapped by sharpedged objects.Periodically inspect all parts of the belts andhave damaged parts replaced. A belt whichhas been overstretched in an accident mustbe replaced by a new one.Ssangyong recommends replacing all com-ponent parts of the seat belts in use duringa collision. No replacement is required aftera minor collision if a Ssangyong Dealer orSsangyong Authorized Service Operationfinds that no damage has occurred andjudges everything to be in proper workingorder.Seat belts and components that were not inuse during the collision must also be in-spected and replaced if they show signs ofdamage or faulty operation.

Using the BeltPull the belt evenly out of the retractor andguide it across the body, making certain thatit is not twisted.Insert the metal latch plate into the buckle.

THREE POINT SEAT BELTEach Ssangyong vehicle is equipped withthree point seat belts with automatic retrac-tors, allowing freedom of body movementwhen driving at even, constant speeds, al-though the spring-tensional belts are alwaysfitted snugly.

The belt has a “vehicle sensitive retractor”which is designed to lock during heavy ac-celeration or deceleration.

Do not attempt to test the locking device byintentionally “shooting” your upper torso inthe forward direction.

This type of belt requires no length adjust-ment. Once worn, the belt adjusts itself tothe movement of wearer, but in the event ofa sudden or strong shock, the belt automati-cally locks to restrain the wearer’s body.

• When installing a child restraintsystem, follow the instructions pro-vided by the manufacturer.

• When not in use, keep your childrestraint system secured with aseat belt or remove it from the ve-hicle.

• Do not hold a child while riding ina vehicle.

• Never let a child stand or kneel onany seat.

• Do not allow a child in the cargoareas while the vehicle is moving.

• Children who have outgrown childrestraint systems should sit in therear seat and be restrained with theseat belt.If child’s seating position has ashoulder belt which is on or veryclose to the face or neck, move thechild close to the center of the ve-hicle, slightly inboard of the shoul-der belt, or move the child to aposition without a shoulder belt ifpossible.


To remove the belt, depress the red push-button on the buckle. The belt will retractautomatically.

Position the lap belt low on the hips.To remove the belt, depress the red buttonon the buckle.

The buckle and metal latch plate of the cen-ter rear lap belt are identified by the “CEN-TRE” mark. Be sure to check the markingbefore wearing the center rear lap belt.

The metal latch plate of the center rear lapbelt can be fastened only into the buckle ofcenter rear lap belt buckle.

AIR BAG*The air bag Supplemental Restraint System(SRS) can provide additional protection forthe driver against head and chest injuries inthe event of a collision.The air bag system activates during a fron-tal collision of sufficient force.

When the air bag inflates, an operating noisemay be heard and a small amount of smokelike gas will be released. The gas is harm-less and does not indicate that there is a fire.

Injuries, including fatal injuries, can occur ina severe collision, even if seat belts areworn properly and the air bags inflate.

No safety system can provide completeprotection in a severe crash.

Just from viewing the vehicle damage aftera crash, it is very difficult to accurately de-termine if the air bags should or should nothave inflated. In some cases, where the airbag did not inflate, extensive visible damageindicate that the car absorbed much of thecrash energy, and the air bags were notneeded. In other cases, a severe jolt, suchas an impact to the under carriage, may notcause extensive body damage but cause theair bags to inflate.

Driver’s Air Bag*The driver’s air bag is stored in the centerpad of the steering wheel.The air bag inflates within milliseconds dur-ing a crash and forms a safety cushion forthe driver. After the air bag completely in-flates, it immediately deflates so that it doesnot interfere with the driver’s visibility orability to steer and operate other controls.The air bag inflates with considerable forceand speed. It is therefore important that thedriver’s seat and seat back should be cor-rectly adjusted for the air bag to be fullyeffective. 3. To hold the engine hood in the openposition, insert the support rod into theslot.

LUGGAGE COVER*When Unrolling the Luggage CoverPull the handle of the luggage cover at thecenter, and fix it into the grooves at left andright sides of quarter trim inner panels.

When Rolling the Luggage CoverTake the luggage cover out of the groovesby pulling the handle and let go the graspslightly to roll the luggage cover.

When Removing the Luggage CoverAfter tearing off the edge of luggage coverat the back of rear seat, remove the luggagecover assembly by raising up it from the fix-ing holder’s grooves.

FUEL RECOMMENDATIONCommercially available high-quality fuels aresuitable. Fuel quality has a decisive influenceon the power output, driveability and life ofthe engine. The additives contained in thefuel play an important role in this connec-tion. You should therefore use only high-quality fuels.

Diesel EngineUse diesel fuel at 50 cetane rating or higher.

Gasoline EngineFuel with too low an octane number cancause pre-ignition (detonation). Ssangyongcan not be held liable for resultant damage.

CAUTION

For correct octane rating setting andother use of gasoline (ex. Leaded),consult your Ssangyong Dealer.

Do not Use MethanolFuels containing methanol (wood alcohol)should not be used in your Musso. This typeof fuel can reduce vehicle performance anddamage components of the fuel system.

NOTE

The warranty policy will not coverdamage of the fuel system and anyperformance problems that arecaused by the use of methanol orfuel containing methanol.

Operation in Foreign CountriesIf you are going to drive your Musso in an-other country, be sure to :• Observe all regulations regarding regis-

tration and insurance.• Check that a suitable fuel is available.

Vehicle Fueling from Drums or

Storage ContainersFor safety reasons (particularly when us-ing noncommercial fueling systems) fuelcontainers, pumps and hoses must be prop-erly earthed.Static electricity build up can occur undercertain atmospheric and fuel flow conditionsif unearthed hoses, particularly plastic, arefitted to the fuel dispensing pump.It is therefore recommended that earthedpumps with integrally earthed hoses beused, and that storage containers be prop-erly earthed during all noncommercial fuel-ing operations.

IGNITION SWITCHThe ignition switch on the right side of thesteering column has the following four po-sitions, LOCK, ACC, ON, and START.

LOCK POSITIONThe steering is locked by removing the key.Rotate the steering wheel until lock is en-gaged.For easier key operation when unlocking,move the steering gently from right to leftand turn the key to the “ACC” position.

NOTE

To turn the key from “ACC” to“LOCK” position, you must push itin.

ACC POSITIONThe engine can be turned off without lock-ing the steering wheel.Some electrical accessories such as theradio and cigarette lighter can be operatedin this position.

CAUTION

Battery can discharge.Do not leave key at “ACC” positionfor periods.

ON POSITIONThis position turns on the ignition system andthe electrical accessories.

START POSITIONThis position activates the starter motor,starting the engine.Release the key when the engine starts, andit will be returned to the “ON” position auto-matically.

CAUTION

Battery will discharge.Do not leave key at “ON” positionwithout running the engine for long.

WARNING

Never remove or turn the key offwhile driving.• This can cause the driver to lose

control of vehicle.• This can result in serious vehicle

BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE• Make sure the area around the vehicle

is clear.• The maintenance items in this manual

should be checked periodically, e.g.,each time you check the engine oil.

• Check that all the windows and lights areclean.

• Visually inspect the tyres for their ap-pearance and condition. Also check thetyre pressures for proper inflation.

sengers to do likewise.• Check the operation of the warning

lights when the key is turned to the “ON”position.

STARTING THE ENGINE1. Apply the parking brake.

2. Manual transmission :Move the gearshift lever to Neutral po-sition and depress the clutch pedal tothe floor while cranking the engine.

Automatic transmission* :Move the selector lever to “P” (Park) or“N” (Neutral), although “P” is preferred.The starter is designed not to operate ifthe selector lever is in one of the driv-ing positions.

Diesel engine model :The glow indicator light will come on andgo out when the glow plugs are suffi-ciently heated for cold engine starting.As soon as the glow indicator light goesout, start the engine.

3. Crank the engine without touching theaccelerator pedal by turning the ignitingkey to the “START” position.Release the key when the engine starts.If the engine starts, but fails to run, re-peat the above procedure.

4. Warm-upAllow the engine to idle for at least30seconds after starting. Drive at mod-erate speed for a short distance first,especially in cold weather.

NOTE

On vehicles equipped with an auto-matic transmission, fuel is automati-cally cut off when the engine is “rac-ing” (running at high speed) withselector lever position “P” or “N”.

IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM*The Immobilizer System provides an addi-tional theft deterrent to the vehicle in whichit is installed and prevents it from beingstarted by unauthorized persons.

When the ignition key with integrated tran-sponder is turned to the ON position, ECU(Engine Control Unit) checks the crypto codeof key and, if correct, allow your Musso tostart the engine.If you can not start the engine, have thesystem checked by Ssangyong Dealer.

The valid key for a vehicle equipped with aImmobilizer System is a mechanical ignitionkey with integrated transponder, which iselectronically coded. The transponder isplaced invisibly in the ignition key.

Only valid ignition keys can be used to startthe engine.

The immobilizer system isolates fuel injectioncontrol system in ECU (electric control unit)when invalid keys are used.

CAUTION

To help prevent the start motor dam-age;• Do not operate the starter for more

than 15 seconds at a time.• If the engine does not start, wait 10

seconds before trying again.

CAUTION

Excessive temperature can damagethe exhaust system.Do not idle at high speed for morethan 5 minutes.


DRIVING WITH A MANUALTRANSMISSIONTo change gears, fully depress the clutchpedal. Then, move the gearshift lever.After shifting, release the clutch slowly.

DRIVING WITH AN AUTOMATICTRANSMISSION*The automatic transmission in your Mussohas 4 forward speeds and 1 reverse speed.The position of the selector lever is indicatedon the left side of the selector lever andinstrument cluster.CAUTION

Shifting to reverse gear while vehicleis moving forward could damage thetransmission.Stop your vehicle completely beforeshifting into reverse.

CAUTION

To help prevent clutch damage, donot rest your foot on the clutch pedalwhile driving.

Starting the Car• After starting the engine, fully depress

the foot brake pedal before shifting theselector lever to the “R”, “D”, “3”, “2” or“1” position. Be sure the vehicle hascompletely stopped before attempting toshift the selector lever into “R” or “P”.

1. Keep the foot brake pedal depressedand shift into a driving gear.

2. Release the parking brake and footbrake. Depressing the accelerator pedalslowly will gradually set the vehicle inmotion.

WARNING

The vehicle could move unexpectedlywhen shifting. You could lose controland hit people or objects.Always depress brake pedal firmlywhile shifting from “P” (Park) or “N”(Neutral) to a forward or reversegear.

CAUTION

Always use the parking brake.Do not depend on “P” position tokeep the vehicle from moving.

WARNING

To help prevent transmission dam-age;• Do not depress the accelerator

pedal while shifting from “P” or“N” to “R”, “D”, “3”, “2”, or “1”.Always depress the brake pedaluntil shifting is completed.

• Never shift to “P (Park)” or “R (Re-verse)” while the vehicle is in mo-tion.Shift to “P” or “R” only after ve-hicle is stopped completely.

• When stopping the vehicle on anuphill gradient, do not hold thevehicle by depressing the accelera-tor pedal. The foot brake shouldbe used for this purpose.

• To drive on a slope, set the leverto “3”, “2” or “1” position accord-ing to road condition.


Drive Range 33 = The drive position for driving conditions

in first, second and third gear.

You might choose 3 instead of D under thefollowing condition:

• When driving on long hilly roads• When driving in heavy city traffic• When going down a steep hill

Selector Lever Positions P, R and NP = Park. The rear wheels locked. To be se-

lected only with the vehicle stationaryand the parking brake on.

R = Reverse. To be engaged only with thevehicle stationary.

N = Neutral.

NOTE

Fuel is automatically cut off whenthe engine is “racing” (running athigh speed) with selector lever posi-tion “P” or “N”.

Drive Range “D”D = The drive position for normal driving

conditions in first to fourth gear.

Fourth gear (the overdrive gear) reducesengine speed, fuel consumption and the en-gine noise level.After the engine has been started and “D”selected, the economy driving program is al-ways operative.

WARNING

The vehicle can move suddenly whenunattended.• Turn off the engine, apply the park-

ing brake fully and remove the ig-nition key when leaving the ve-hicle.

• Do not use “P” (Park) position inplace of the parking brake.

• Never leave the vehicle unattendedwhile the engine is running.


Drive Range 22 = The drive position prevents the trans-

mission from shifting into third or fourthgear.

Select drive range 2 for more power whenclimbing hills, for engine braking effectswhen driving down steep hills.

Drive Range 11 = The drive position for maximum braking

effect, e.g. when driving down severegradients; the transmission does notshift beyond first gear.

MODE SWITCH• [W] - WINTER MODE

Press the “W” portion of the modeswitch to select “WINTER” driving modeand “WINTER” indicator lamp will be dis-played on the instrument panel.Use this mode in the event of starting-off or driving difficulties on slipperyroads.

• [P] - POWER MODEFor increased power, improved accel-eration or driving up long slopes, pressthe “P” portion of the mode switch.The “POWER” indicator lamp will be dis-played on the instrument panel.The transmission will shift into thepower driving pattern. The transmissionwill shift at higher engine revolutions, al-lowing more powerful acceleration.

• NORMALUse this mode for your normal driving.This driving mode can be selected whenboth “W” and “P” portions are notpressed.


DRIVING TIPS FOR AUTOMATICTRANSMISSION*Starting the CarAfter starting the engine and before shiftinginto a drive range, depress the brake pedalsince the vehicle will otherwise start to“creep”. Never use accelerator and brakepedals simultaneously.For normal driving conditions the “D” shouldbe selected.If the accelerator pedal is depressed gen-tly and evenly the transmission will shiftinto the fuel-saving higher gears at an earlystage. The drive range needs to bechanged manually only in exceptionalcases. Engine BrakingIn order to utilize the engine braking effectwhen driving downhill, select drive range“3”, “2” or, if necessary, “1”.

The braking action is most effective in driverange “1”. If drive range “1” is selected attoo high a speed, the transmission remainsin second gear until the shift point for firstgear is reached, e.g. as a result of decel-eration.

Stopping the CarThe selector lever can be left in the chosendrive range with the engine running. Whenstopping on gradients engage the parkingbrake or depress the brake pedal. Do notincrease the engine revolutions to ensuresmooth idling while standing if a drive rangehas been selected.

Before leaving the vehicle, apply parkingbrake, then place selector lever in position“P” and remove ignition key.

Maneuvering the CarTo maneuver the car back and forth duringattempts to park or in garage entrances uti-lize the creeping effect. Regulate your speedby lightly releasing the brake pedal. Neverpress the accelerator and brake pedals si-multaneously.

BRAKEYour vehicle is equipped with disc brakesat all 4 wheels.• If one brake circuit should fail, the ve-

hicle can still be stopped with the sec-ond remaining circuit. If this happens, thebrake pedal must be fully depressedwith greater pedal pressure. The brak-ing distance is increased. Have the brak-ing system checked and repaired by aSsangyong Dealer or Ssangyong Autho-rized Service Operation before continu-ing your journey.

• After being parked, check to be sure theparking brake is not engaged and thatthe parking brake indicator light is outbefore driving away.

• Do not coast down hills with the vehicleout of gear. This may be extremely haz-ardous. Keep the vehicle in gear at alltimes, use the brakes to slow down.

Press the brake pedalhard down regardless of the road surface(dry, wet, slippery, etc.), hold it down andlet ABS work for you.The ABS modulates the braking pressure tothe respective wheels to maintain the maxi-mum braking effect on the vehicle, reducingthe loss of directional stability or steeringcontrol.Slight vibration accompanied by noise usu-ally occurs while ABS is operating. Suchvibration and noise simply indicates that theABS is functioning normally.In an emergency, apply full force on thebrake and clutch pedal simultaneously.The anti-lock brake system will be activatedimmediately, thus allowing you to retain fullsteering control of your vehicle.We recommend that you familiarize yourselfwith this braking technique. However, avoidtaking unnecessary risks.

CAUTION

Driving too fast, particularly in cor-ners, aquaplaning and driving tooclose to the vehicle in front in-creases the risk of an accident. Thisrisk can not be reduced by the ABSsystem.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM*(ABS)Anti-lock brake system is an advanced elec-tronic braking system that will help preventa braking skid.The anti-lock brake system prevents thewheels from locking up during sudden brak-ing or braking on a slippery road to help thevehicle remain steerable and stable.This system becomes operative only whenit senses differences in rotational speed ofthe wheels, and that they are about to lockup. The system detects the wheel speedand electronically controls the pressure ap-plied to the brake.When the ignition is switched on, the ABSwarning light comes on. It goes out afterabout 2 seconds. If it does not go out, or ifit comes on during driving, there is a de-fect in the ABS. In this case the brake sys-tem performs its regular function but with-out the anti-locking capability.In the event of a defect in ABS, the trac-tion control system (TCS) is shut off as well.Have the ABS checked by SsangyongDealer or Ssangyong Authorized ServiceOperation as soon as possible.

TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM*(WITH ANTI-LOCK BRAKESYSTEM)The traction control system (TCS) is an ad-vanced system that will help you to moveoff on slippery surfaces.

If one of the wheels is on firm ground andthe other is on slippery ground such assnow or mud.

If you then start to drive off, the wheel onthe slippery surface will spin and the car willnot move.

TCS can help you to prevent this by lockingand releasing the wheel on the slipperysurface.

When the ignition is switched on the TCSwarning light comes on with the ABS warn-ing light.

It goes out after around 2 seconds. The TCSwarning light flashes when traction controlfunction is operating.

A fault with the TCS system will illuminatethe TCS warning light while the engine isrunning.

If this condition occurs, consult yourSsangyong Dealer as soon as possible.


PARKING BRAKEThe parking brake acts on the rear wheels.It engages automatically when applied. Theparking brake lever is located between thefront seats.

To apply the parking brake, depress thebrake pedal and pull the lever up fully.To release, depress the brake pedal, pull thelever up slightly and push the button in thetip of the lever. Then lower the lever whileholding the button in.Ensure the parking brake is fully releasedbefore driving off.See your Ssangyong Dealer if adjustment ofthe parking brake is required.

ENGINE EXHAUST GAS CAUTION(CARBON MONOXIDE)• Avoid inhaling engine exhaust gases.

Engine exhaust gases contains carbonmonoxide, which has no color or odor.Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas.

• It can cause unconsciousness and canbe lethal if inhaled.

• If at any time you suspect that exhaustgases are entering the vehicle, have thevehicle inspected and repaired immedi-ately by a Ssangyong Dealer orSsangyong Authorized Service Opera-tion. If it is necessary to drive under suchconditions, do so only with all windowsfully open.

• To protect against exhaust gases enter-ing the vehicle, the exhaust system andbody should be inspected:- each time the vehicle is raised for an

oil change.- whenever a change is noticed in the

sound of the exhaust system.- whenever the exhaust system, under

body or rear of the vehicle is damagedor becomes corroded.

• Do not operate the engine in confined ar-eas such as garages or other closedareas any more than needed to movethe vehicle in or out of the area.

• When the vehicle is stopped in an un-confined area for more than a short timewith the engine running, place the airintake lever to the fresh air mode todraw the outside air into the vehicle andset the fan switch to high speed.

• Never sit (or leave the children) in aparked or stopped vehicle for any ex-tended period of time with the enginerunning.

• Avoid driving with tailgate open, as ex-haust gases could enter the vehicle. Ifyou must drive with the tailgate open,close all windows, place the air intakelever to the fresh air mode to draw theoutside air into the vehicle, and set thefan switch to high speed.

• Keep your distance from other vehiclesto avoid sudden stops. This will reducewear on brake linings and improveeconomy as extra fuel is required toaccelerate back up to driving speed.

• Do not carry unnecessary weight in thevehicle.

• Do not rest your foot on the brake pedalwhile driving. This can cause needlesswear, possible damage to the brakes andpoor fuel economy.

• Always ensure your vehicle is main-tained to the manufacturer’s specifica-tion.


HAZARDOUS DRIVINGWhen hazardous driving is encounteredbecause of water, snow, ice, mud, sand orsimilar hazard, follow these suggestions.• Drive cautiously and allow extra dis-

tance for braking.• Avoid sudden movements in braking or

steering.• When braking depress the brake pedal

with a light up-and-down motion until thevehicle is stopped.

BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING LIGHTThis warning light comes on when the park-ing brake is applied with the ignition on andgoes out when the parking brake is released.(But, if the parking brake is applied, thiswarning light still remains on until the park-ing brake released.)

Make sure the parking brake is fully releasedbefore driving.If this warning light comes on even whenthe parking brake is completely released, itmay indicate that the brake fluid in the res-ervoir is low. Then ;1. Pull off the road and stop carefully.2. Check the brake fluid and add the rec-

ommended brake fluid up to the MAXmark.

3. If the brake operates normally and youjudge it to be safe, drive carefully at asafe speed to the nearest SsangyongDealer for inspection immediately.

4. If leaks are found, if the warning remainson, or if the brakes do not operate prop-erly, have the vehicle towed to nearestSsangyong Dealer for inspection andrepairs.

Low brake fuel level may increasethe stopping distance and requiregreater pedal effort as well asgreater pedal travel.

If this light illuminates while driving, a mal-function of ABS is indicated. In this case thebrake system performs its regular functionbut without the anti-locking capability. Havethe system checked by Ssangyong Dealeras soon as possible if this condition occurs.


DOOR OPEN WARNING LIGHTThis light comes on when a door is eitheropened or not closed completely.

CAUTION

Driving with door open can cause in-jury to people inside and outside thevehicle.• Before driving off, close all doors.• Check warning light is off.

BATTERY CHARGE WARNINGLIGHTThis warning light indicates that the batteryis being discharged.When the ignition is switched on, this warn-ing light comes on and should go out whenthe engine is started.

If the light illuminates while driving,• Pull off the road and stop your car.• Check the alternator drive belt for loose-

ness or breakage.• If the belt is OK, there is a problem some-

where in the charging system. The prob-lem should be located and corrected assoon as possible. Have the systemchecked and repaired immediately byyour nearest Ssangyong Dealer.

CAUTION

Do not continue driving if the belt isloose or broken.Engine can overheat, damaging en-gine.


AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT*When the ignition is switched on, this warn-ing light illuminates for approximately 6 sec-onds and should go out, to confirm that theair bag is operational.If it does not come on, or if it does not goout after 6 seconds, or if it flashes or illumi-nates continuously while driving, it meansthat there is malfunction in the system. Theair bag system would therefore not be trig-gered in the event of an accident. Have theair bag system checked without delay by aSsangyong Dealer or Ssangyong Autho-rized Service Operation.See page 1-29 for details on the air bag.

TURN SIGNAL/HAZARD FLASHERINDICATORWhen the turn signal switch is turned on,this indicator flashes to indicate operation ofthe external turn signal.Shorter flashes indicate the failure of a turnsignal lamp bulb.Both right and left lights flash when thehazard warning switch is turned on.

NOTE

If a bulb is burned out, replace it im-mediately to help avoid an accident.If the indicating arrows don’t go onat all when you signal a turn, checkthe fuse and for burned-out bulbs.

SEAT BELT REMINDERThe seat belt warning light comes on when-ever the ignition switch is placed in the “ON”position unless the driver’s seat belt is se-curely fastened. Also the seat belt warningchime will sound for about 6 seconds whenthe ignition switch is in the “ON” positionunless the driver’s seat belt is secured fas-tened.Attention should be paid to ensure that theseat belts are fastened before driving off.


HIGH BEAM INDICATORThis indicator illuminates when the headlighthigh beam is switched on.

TAILGATE GLASS DEFOGGERINDICATORThe indicator comes on when the tailgateglass defogger is switched “ON”.

TCS (TRACTION CONTROLSYSTEM) INDICATOR*The TCS indicator comes on briefly as youturn the ignition ON. This means the indica-tor bulb is operating properly. The indicatorshould go out after about 2 seconds. If theindicator stays on, the syetem should bechecked as soon as possible by SsangyongDealer.

NOTE

During driving, the light flashes onlywhen the TCS is operating.The TCS will be operated up to 60km/h because of safety driveability.Drive your vehicle slowly when theTCS is operating.


ECS/SPORT INDICATOR*This indicator comes on when the ignition isswitched on and should go out after theengine is started. If the indicator flickerswhile driving, it indicates that there is mal-function in ECS system, have the ECS sys-tem checked at the nearest SsangyongDealer.

NOTE

If the ECS/SPORT indicator stays onwhen the “ECS” switch is pressed, itindicates that the “SPORT” isswitched on. The “SPORT” modeimproves the vehicle’s steerability,in particular when driving on curveor rough roads.

WINTER MODE INDICATORThe indicator will come on when the wintermode (“WINTER”) switch is selected.Use this mode to drive off smoothly undericy and slippery road.

GLOW INDICATOR(For Diesel Engine)This indicator comes on when the ignitionswitch is turned on and stays on for a shorttime or may go off right away. The waitingtime will vary according to the engine cool-ant temperature. When the glow plugs aresufficiently heated for cold starting, the lightwill go out.Then, the engine should be started.


POWER MODE INDICATORThe indicator will come on when the powermode (“POWER”) switch is selected.Use this mode if you need more power dur-ing abrupt acceleration, driving on steep hills.

AUTO SHIFT INDICATOR*The indicator comes on when the ignitionswitch is ON and the indicator shows theautomatic transmission selector lever posi-tion.

4WD INDICATOR4WD - Part timeThe “4WD HIGH” or “4WD LOW” indicatorcomes on when the 4WD switch is in “4H”or “4L” position.

CAUTION

Both “4WD HIGH” and “4WD LOW”come on simultaneously when thereis malfunction in part time 4WD Sys-tem.


LIGHT SWITCH WARNING CHIMEThe chime sounds to remind you to turn offthe lights if the driver’s door is opened withthem switched on when the ignition key isremoved.

NOTE

The asymmetrical low beam in-creases the field of vision on theright-hand side of the lane. Whendriving in countries which drive onthe left, the 15° section of theheadlamp lenses must have a blackcover strip applied.

LIGHT SWITCHTo turn the lights on or off, twist the knobon the end of the combination switch lever.

There are three position;

“OFF” positionAll lights are off.

PositionPosition, tail, license plate and instrumentpanel lights are illuminated.

PositionHeadlight (low beam) and all the above lightsare illuminated.

4WD - Full time*The “4WD LOW” indicator comes on whenthe 4WD switch is in “4L” position.

CAUTION

To shift into ‘4L’ or ‘4H’, completelystop the vehicle and always press theclutch pedal for manual transmis-sion, or position the selector lever to“N” for automatic transmission, andturn the 4WD switch to ‘4L’ or ‘4H’.


TURN SIGNAL SWITCHMove this lever up to the stop position tosignal a right turn.Move this lever down to the stop position tosignal a left turn.When the turn is completed, the signal willcancel and the lever will return to the nor-mal position.When changing lanes, move the switch partway and hold it there. When released, theswitch will spring back to the normal posi-tion.

CAUTION

Battery will discharge.Do not leave the lights on while en-gine is off.

HIGH BEAM SWITCHTo turn on the high beam headlights push thelever towards the instrument panel with thelow beam headlights on.The headlight high beam indicator light in theinstrument panel comes on when the head-lights are on high beam.For low beam headlights, pull the lever backtowards the steering wheel to the normalposition.

NOTE

The light switch must already be inthe position.

PASSING LIGHT SWITCHTo flash the high beam, pull the lever to-wards the steering wheel and release it.The lever will return to the normal positionwhen released.The high beam headlights stay on as longas you hold the lever.


CAUTION

Wiper operation on dry windshieldcan scratch glass and wear theblades prematurely.Do not operate wipers when wind-shield is dry.

CAUTION

Wiper operation with obstructions,such as snow, can damage wipermotor.Clear obstruction before operating.

CAUTION

Wiper blades can freeze to wind-shield in cold weather.Wiper operation while the blades arefrozen can damage the wiper motor.Check blades are not frozen to wind-shield before operating.

Intermittent Wiper ControlThe interval of wiper swings can be ad-justed by twisting the control knob upwardor downward when the windshield wiperswitch is in “INT” position.

• F : Fast interval• S : Slow interval

The intermittent wiper operates automaticallyaccording to the vehicle speed when thewiper switch is in the “INT” position.

WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCHTo operate the windshield wipers, move thelever in 3 downwards steps with the igni-tion on.

WINDSHIELD WASHER SWITCHTo spray washer fluid on the windshield, pullthe lever towards the steering wheel withthe ignition on.

When you pull the lever for less than about0.6 seconds, the washer fluid is sprayedonto the windshield, but the windows wip-ers are not operated.

When you pull the lever for more than about0.6 second, the washer fluid is sprayed ontothe windshield while you pull the lever andthen the windshield wipers are operated forseveral cycles. When you release the lever,the wipers automatically returns to the restposition.

CAUTION

In freezing weather, washer fluid canform ice on windshield, blocking for-ward vision.Warm windshield before operatingwasher.

CAUTION

The washer motor can be overheatedand damaged.• Do not operate the washer when

washer fluid tank is empty.• Do not operate the washer con-

tinuously for more than 10 sec-onds.

FRONT FOG LAMP SWITCH*Fog lamps provide auxiliary illumination andimprove vision in fog or snow.To turn on the front fog lamps, press the frontfog lamp switch.


CAUTION

Tailgate window can be scratched orwiper blade can be worn prema-turely.Do not operate the wiper when thewindow is dry.

CAUTION

In cold weather, washer fluid canform ice on rear window, blockingyour vision. Warm rear window be-fore operating washer.

DOOR UNLOCK SWITCHThe doors will be locked automatically if thevehicle speed exceeds approximately. 50km/h.

To cancel the automatic door locking func-tion, press the door unlock switch.

NOTE

• If the vehicle speed exceeds ap-proximately. 50km/h again, thedoors will be locked automati-cally.

• To open the door when the vehicleis stopped, cancel the door lock-ing function by pressing theswitch.

TAILGATE WINDOW WIPER ANDWASHER SWITCHThe tailgate window wiper and washerswitches are located on the instrumentpanel separately.

To operate the tailgate window wiper, pushthe switch. To cancel the operation of thewindow wiper, push the switch again.To spray the washer fluid, push the tailgatewasher switch.

CAUTION

Replace the blade when it is worn orwhen it no longer wipers properly, toavoid loss of vision when in use.


REAR FOG LAMP SWITCH*To turn on the rear fog lamp, push thisswitch while the light switch is placed in position.

When the lamps are switched on, the indi-cator light in the switch comes on.The indicator light will remain on as long asthe rear fog lamps are turned on.Pushing this switch again will turn off therear fog lamps.Rear fog lamps can dazzle people behind.Use rear fog lamps in severe weather con-ditions.

ECS SWITCH*Press the switch and “ECS/SPORT” indi-cator light on the instrument panel comeson. In this mode, the suspension is auto-matically controlled in “MEDIUM/HARD”steps according to driving conditions andthis mode improves the vehic le ’ssteerability, in particular when driving oncurve or rough roads.Press the switch again to resume normaldriving and “ECS/SPORT” indicator light onthe instrument panel goes off.In this mode, the suspension is automati-cally controlled in “SOFT/MEDIUM/HARD”steps according to driving conditions andthis mode provides the comfortable driv-ing on the normal road.

OUTSIDE REARVIEW MIRROR &TAILGATE GLASS DEFOGGERSWITCHTo demist or defrost the tailgate window orside rear view mirror, push the defoggerswitch when the ignition switch is in the “ON”position.The defogger indicator in the cluster illumi-nates when the defroster is operating.Pushing it again will turn off the demisteroperating.


CRUISE CONTROL*Cruise control is an automatic speed controlsystem that maintains a desired drivingspeed without using the accelerator pedal.The vehicle speed must be greater than36km/h to engage cruise control. This fea-ture is especially useful for motorway driv-ing.

CAUTION

Improper use of cruise control couldbe dangerous.• Do not use on winding roads.• Do not use in heavy traffic.• Do not use on slippery, wet roads.This could result in a loss of control,collision, and/or personal injuries.

Setting a Desired Speed1. To operate the cruise control, acceler-

ate to your desired speed using theacceleration pedal more over 36km/h.

2. When the desired speed is reached,push up the ACCEL.SET. switch of acruise control lever or push down theDECEL.SET. switch for 1 second per oneswitching and then release the accelera-tion pedal, slowly.

3. Now, the vehicle is cruised by this sys-tem with set speed.

4. And you can set to other vehicle speedagain with above steps after accelera-tion pedal intervention during cruise con-trol running.

CAUTION

When cleaning the inside of tailgatewindow, be careful not to scratch ordamage the defogger wires.Do not clean inside of tailgate win-dow with sharp instruments or win-dow cleaners containing abrasives.

NOTE

In snowy condition, use this defog-ger switch only after removing anysnow from the tailgate window.

NOTE

The defogger uses a lot of power andcan discharge the battery.• Do not use the defogger when

starting the vehicle or the engineis not running.

• Switch off defogger when tailgatewindow is clear.


Accelerating With Cruise Control Sys-

tem• While cruise control system is running

1. Push up the ACCEL.SET. switch of acruise control lever and hold it until thedesired speed is reached without anacceleration pedal intervention.

2. When the desired speed is reached,release the lever.

• While cruise control system is not run-ning

1. Accelerate using the acceleration pedalmore over 36km/h.

2. Push up the ACCEL.SET switch of acruise control lever and hold it.

3. And then release the acceleration pedal,slowly.


• Tap up while cruise control system isrunning

1. Push up the ACCEL.SET. switch of acruise control lever less than 0.5 sec-ond per one switching while the cruisecontrol system is running. This is a tapup switching.

2. When you operate a tap-up switching,the vehicle is accelerated for 1.3km/hover the previous set speed.

3. If you want to accelerate for 13km/h, op-erate the tap-up switching ten timeswithout accelerating with cruise controlsystem.

Decelerating with cruise control sys-

tem• While Cruise control system is running

1. Push down the DECEL.SET. Switch of acruise control lever and hold it until thedesired speed is reached without abrake pedal intervention. But the cruisecontrol system cannot maintain thecruise function at less than 34km/h.


• When Cruise control system is not run-ning

1. Push down the DECEL.SET. Switch of acruise control lever and hold it.

2. And then release the acceleration pedal,slowly.

3. When the desired speed is reached,release the lever. But the cruise controlsystem cannot maintain the cruise func-tion at less than 34km/h.


Recovery of set speedEven if the cruise control is canceled, theprevious set cruise speed can be recoveredby pushing toward the RSM(resume) switchof a cruise control lever when the currentvehicle speed is higher than 36km/h withoutacceleration intervention. But if you turn offthe ignition switch, the memorized set speedis cleared and you cannot recover the pre-vious set speed.

CAUTION

The resume position should only beused if the driver is fully aware ofthis speed and wishes to resume thisparticular speed.

Normal Cancellation of cruise controlThe cruise control system will be canceledwhen one or more items of the followingconditions is applied;

1. When the brake pedal is depressed.2. When the cruising speed is downed less

than 34km/h.3. When the off switch is operated by

pulling rearward the cruise control lever.4. When ABD is activated.

And the cruise control system can be oper-ated again in driving state.

• Tap down while cruise control systemis running

1. Push down the DECEL.SET. Switch of acruise control lever less than 0.5 sec-ond per one switching while the cruisecontrol system is running. This is a tapdown switching.

2. When you operate a tap-down switch-ing, the vehicle is decelerated for 1km/hbelow the previous set speed.

3. If you want to decelerate for 10km/h, op-erate the tap-down switching ten timeswithout brake pedal intervention.


CAUTION

Keep the main cruise control switchas neutral position when not usingthe cruise control.

Abnormal Cancellation of cruise control1. When the rapid deceleration is applied

without braking.2. When the rapid acceleration is applied

without acceleration pedal intervention.3. When the cruise control lever is failed.4. When the brake switch and brake light

switch input signal is unplausible.

And the cruise control system cannot beoperated again in driving state. In this case,you should stop the vehicle, and turn off theignition switch and then turn it on again.After you do that, you can use the cruisecontrol system again. But if the cruise con-trol system isn’t recovered, you should con-tact Ssangyong Dealer for diagnosis of thecruise control system.

CAUTION

Abnormal changes of the selectorlever can damage the engine.Do not move the shift lever to Neu-ral while driving at the set speed.Automatic transmission damagemay result.

CAUTION

• The speed that has been set maynot be maintained on uphill ordownhill slopes.

• The speed may drop to less thanthe set speed on a steep uphillgrade. The accelerator must beused if you want to maintain thatspeed.

• The speed may increase to morethan the set speed on a steep down-hill grade. When the speed in-creases too much, turn off thecruise control.


HAZARD WARNING FLASHERSWITCHTo turn on the hazard warning flashers,push the hazard warning flasher switch. Allturn signal lamps will flash simultaneouslywith the hazard warning indicators.Push this switch again to turn them off.The switch can be operated with the igni-tion on or off.Use the hazard warning flasher to warnother drivers when you stop or park underemergency conditions, or when your vehiclebecomes a traffic hazard. Avoid stopping onthe road if possible.

4 WHEEL DRIVE SWITCHThe indicator light in the cluster will come onaccording to the 4WD operation.

Part Time 4WD SystemTo operate the 4WD, push the switch to ‘4H’or ‘4L’.

• 2H : 2-wheel drive, normal drive mode.• 4H : 4-wheel drive high speed.• 4L : 4-wheel drive low speed.

Full Time 4WD SystemPush the switch according to road condition.

• 4H : 4-wheel drive high speed, normaldrive mode

• 4L : 4-wheel drive low speed

Using Cruise Control on HillsHow well cruise control works on hills de-pends on the speed, load, and the steep-ness of the hill.

When going up steep hills, you may have topress the accelerator pedal to maintain yourspeed. When going downhill, you may haveto brake or shift to a lower gear to keep yourspeed down.

Applying the brake takes you out of cruisecontrol.


HEADLAMP LEVELLING SWITCH*With the low beam switched on, adjust theaiming angle of headlights to suit the vehicleload.

• To lower the aiming angle, push theswitch downward.

• To raise the aiming angle, push theswitch upward.

NOTE

According to load condition, adjustthe aiming angle of headlights.

DIGITAL CLOCKWhen the ignition is on, the time is displayedin the digital clock.There are three adjusting buttons for the digi-tal clock.

1. H : Hour Adjusting ButtonTo go forward one hour, press H buttononce using a pointer, such as ball-pointpen, with the ignition on.To go forward continuously, keep thisbutton depressed.

2. M : Minute Adjusting ButtonTo go forward one minute, press MINbutton once using a pointer, such as ball-point pen, with the ignition on.To go forward continuously, keep thisbutton depressed.

3. S : Setting ButtonTo reset the time by the time signal, pressthe SET button using a pointer, such asball-point pen, with the ignition on.For example, if this button is pressedwhile the time is between 8:00 and 8:29the display is set to 8:00. If this buttonis pressed while the time is between8:30 and 8:59, the display is set to 9:00.

NOTE

When disconnecting the battery orreplacing the fuse, the clock shouldbe adjusted again.

ASHTRAYFront AshtrayTo open the front ashtray, push the coverof ashtray. After using the ashtray, push itcompletely back in.To empty the ashtray, open the ashtray fully,depress the metal plate and pull the ashtrayall the way out.

WARNING

Putting lit cigarettes or matches inashtray with other combustible ma-terials can cause a fire hazard.Do not use ashtray as a waste recep-tacle.

Rear AshtrayRear ashtray for rear seat passenger is in-stalled in the rear of the center consoleOpen the ashtray by swinging the upperedge of the lid down.After using the ashtray, close it completely.To empty the ashtray, open the ashtray fully,depress the retaining spring in center, tipand pull out the ashtray.To install, attach at the bottom and push theashtray back into place.

HORN SWITCHTo sound the horn, press the center of thesteering wheel (without driver’s air bag), orfar right or left of the steering wheel(withdriver’s air bag).The horn sounds with the ignition switch inany position.Keep use of the horn to a minimum.

ROOM LAMPFront Room LampThe room lamp switch has two positions.

“Door” PositionThe light comes on when either of the doorsis opened regardless of the ignition switchposition.

“SPOT” PositionThe light comes on and stays on regardlessof the ignition switch position.

NOTE

When the ‘DOOR’ switch is on, it be-gins to dim for several seconds afterclosing the door.


COURTESY LIGHTThe courtesy light is located on the driver’sand passenger’s door to illuminate the spacearound the feet.The courtesy light turns on when the dooris opened regardless of the ignition switchposition.

LUGGAGE ROOM LAMPThe luggage room lamp is located on the rearside of headlining.

The luggage room lamp is illuminated byopening the tailgate.To turn on the lamp, push the right part ofthe lamp.To turn off the lamp, push the left part ofthe lamp.

Rear Room LampTo turn on the light, push the switch.To turn off the light, push the switch again.


CUP HOLDER (ONE TOUCH TYPE*)The cup holder is located on the center ofthe console box for holding cup in the hole.The cup holder with one touch type* is op-tional part.If you do not want to use the cup holderwith one touch type, close the cover bypressing upper piece of it.

RECIRCULATION SWITCHPress this switch when driving in dustyconditions or to avoid traffic or outsidefumes, and when quick cooling or heatingof the passenger area is required.

The indicator light will illuminate and insideair is recirculated.Pressing the recirculation switch again willdraw outside air into the passenger com-partment. The indicator will go out.

FAN CONTROL SWITCHThe fan control switch provides the speedcontrol of the blower fan.

• Semi-AutomaticIn ‘AUTO’ position, the fan speed will beautomatically controlled according toselected temperature.

• ManualThe fan speed will be controlledmanually by regulating between the ‘1’and ‘4’ position.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL SWITCHThe temperature control switch controls thetemperature of the air that comes throughthe air vents.

Semi-AutomaticOnly when the ‘AUTO’ mode is selected, theselected temperature can be automaticallymaintained.

ManualSelect the temperature of inside air byranging from ‘COLD’ to ‘HOT’.

Continued operation in the recircu-lation mode could cause interior tobecome stuffy and windows to fog up.Use recirculation mode in shortperiods of time.

AIR DISTRIBUTION SWITCHThis switch allows you to select the outletair flow.This switch has the following five positions;

Air flows from the center, side vents and

This setting allows half of the air to flowfrom the front, rear foot vents. It allows therest of the air to flow from the defroster andthe front door window defroster vents.

Foot Position ( )

This setting sends the majority of the airthrough the front, rear foot vents. The restof the air flows from the defroster and thefront door window defroster vents.

(A/C) system cools and removes moisture

from the air inside your vehicle.

Even with the A/C on, your vehicle will pro-duce warm air if you set the temperaturecontrol switch to warm.

CAUTION

• Using your air conditioning (A/C)system while driving up long hillsor in heavy traffic can cause theengine to overheat.

• Vehicle can be damaged.• Watch temperature gauge. Turn

OFF A/C if gauge indicates engineoverheating.

To turn on the air conditioning (A/C) :

1. Start the engine.2. Press A/C switch.

(Indicator light will come on to confirmthe A/C is running.)

3. Adjust fan speed.

NOTE

The air conditioning will notoperate when the fan control switchis in the off position.

To turn OFF the A/C :

1. Press A/C switch again.(Indicator light will go off to confirm theA/C is not running.)


Do not use or in extremely

humid weather when the temperature

control switch is set to the blue areafor cooling.

The difference between the outside

air and the temperature of the

windshield can cause the windows to

fog, thereby restricting your view.

This can lead to an accident whichcan damage your vehicle and cause

personal injuries.

CAUTION

OPERATING TIPS FORVENTILATION SYSTEMIf your vehicle has been parked in directsunlight, open the windows before turningon the air conditioning (A/C).

To clear foggy windows on rainy days or inhigh humidity, decrease the humidity by usingthe A/C.

Turn on the A/C system for a few minutesat least once each week, even in wintermonths or when the A/C system is not beingused regularly.This maintains proper lubrication of thecompressor and the seals and will prolongthe service life of the system.

Driving in stop-and-go traffic may reduce theeffectiveness of the A/C system.

The A/C compressor does not operatewhen the fan control knob is turned OFF.

Obstructions (snow, ice, leaves, etc.) on theair inlet grilles in front of the windshield canreduce the effectiveness of the ventilation,heating and air conditioning.

What is the turbocharger?Turbochargers are based on gas turbineengine technology, but operate under con-siderably greater pressure.The turbocharger consists of two turbo el-ements, a turbine and a compressor, bothof which are driven from the main centershaft. The turbine rotates between 50,000-100,000 spins per minute and uses the en-ergy of the exhaust gas to drive the com-pressor. The compressor, in turn, draws infresh air which it supplies to the cylindersin compressed from.As more fuel is drawn into the engine, out-put performance is boosted between 15-30% in comparison to a non-turbochargedengine.

CAUTION

• At low ambient temperature, orwhen ever the vehicle has not beenused for a long period, normalengine oil pressure and flow is af-fected. Under these conditions theengine should be started and al-lowed to idle for a few minutesbefore operating at a higher rpm.

• Avoid long periods of engineidling. The combination of low-pressures in the turbine and com-pressor may allow oil to seep pastthe seal into the turbine or thecompressor.

TURB OCHARGER INSPECTIONGood maintenance practices should be ob-served, particularly regarding air filtrationand oil quality and filtration.These areas are important because of aturbocharger’s speed of operation.Proper operating procedures and preventivemaintenance practices enhance good turbo-service lift and performance.

CAUTION

Operating the turbocharger systemwithout the intake and exhaust mani-fold mounting can result in severeengine damage.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCEThe vehicle owner should be encouraged toobserve the following precautions to ensuremaximum turbocharger service life.

CAUTION

• Operate the engine above idle onlyafter normal engine oil pressurehas been established. Reviving upthe engine, immediately afterstart-up, could result in damage tothe turbocharger unit.Forcing the turbocharger to oper-ate before the bearings are ad-equately lubricated creates unnec-essary friction.

• Take steps to reduce temperatureand speeds from their maximumbefore shutting down the engine.

• The turbocharger may need to bepre-oiled after oil change or anyservice that involves oil draining.Crank the engine a few times be-fore allowing start, then start theengine and allow it to idle for aperiod to establish full oil circu-lation and pressure before operat-ing at higher rpm.

HOW TO CHANGE A FLAT TYRE

If a tyre goes flat, follow these safetyinstructions before you change the tyre:

1. Turn on hazard flashers.2. Move off the road to a safe place away

from traffic.3. Park on a firm and level surface.4. Turn off engine and remove key.5. Set parking brake.6. If vehicle has an automatic transmission,

shift to P. If your vehicle has a manualtransmission, shift to first or reverse.

7. Have all passengers get out of vehicleand stand in safe a place.

Getting the Jack Connection RodJack connection rod is located under therear seats and covered by carpet.

8. Use a wedge, block of wood, or rocksin front of and behind the tyre that isdiagonal from the tyre you plan tochange.

Failure to follow these safety precautionscan cause your vehicle to slip off the jackpossibly causing serious injury.


Removing the Spare Wheel1. Insert the spare wheel handle into the

hole above the rear bumper.2. Then attach the wheel nut wrench into

the spare wheel handle.3. Rotate the wheel nut wrench counter-

clockwise until the winch wire isloosened.

4. Slide the lift plate through the center ofthe spare wheel, then place the sparewheel near the flat tyre.

WARNING

When installing the spare tyre to thecarrier, please follow these instruc-tions:1. Lay the tyre flat on the ground and

ensure the outer surface of thewheel disc is facing DOWN (tyrevalve stem facing down).

2. Locate the carrier cradle correctlythrough the center of the rim.

3. When securing the tyre in thecarrier, ensure that it is seatedagainst the floor pan correctly anddo not overtighten.

4. If the spare tyre is in flat, you mustkeep it in the luggage room.

Installing the Spare Wheel1. Insert the jack handle into the actuator

hole and turn counterclockwise until thecable/retainer is extended for insertioninto the wheel.

2. Install the retainer through wheel centerwith valve stem facing down.

3. Rotate the handle clockwise to securetyre. Take care the tyre goes straight upwithout touching any other parts.Continue until the lift mechanism “Click”3 times.

4. Check for proper seating againstunderbody supports and retighten ifnecessary.

SPARE TIRE OF 7-SEATERRemoval and Installation of spare tire

WARNING

Please follow these safety instructionsbefore you change the damaged tire.• Make sure of surrounding safety

conditions and move off the roadto a safe place away from traffic.Park on a firm and level groundand turn on the hazard warninglamp. Turn off the engine andfirmly pull the parking brake.

• Use a wedge, block of wood, orrocks in front of and behind thetire that is diagonal from the tireyou plan to change.

1. Rotate the latch bolt counterclockwiseas shown using the wheel nut wrench.

2. Hold the tire and carrier and thencompletely remove the bolt.

3. After removing the bolt, get down the tireand carrier and then pull out the tire.

WARNING

When refitting the tire on the carrier,put the outer surface of the tire to befacing down. And tighten the boltcorrect and firm.• When the spare tire (temporary

tire) is installed, drive the vehicleless than 60 km/h. Please keep inmind that the maximum drivingspeed is up to 80 Km/h andmaintain the air pressure to 60 psi.Avoid long distance driving.

• The spare tire (temporary tire)should be used in emergency casesonly, so never use it for normaldriving purposes. When the sparetire (temporary tire) is installed,immediately, replace it with specifiedtire from nearest Ssangyongauthorized service shop.


CAUTION

Do not remove any of the nuts untilyou have raised that wheel off theground.

Changing a Wheel1. Remove the spare wheel from stowage

area with jacking tools.2. Use the wheel wrench to loosen the

wheel nuts one turn each.

3. Insert the jack connection rod and thewheel wrench into the jack.

4. Rotate the jack connection rod clockwiseto raise the lift head slightly.

5. Locate the jack according to the fig.below.

CAUTIONDo not attempt to raise vehicle untilthe jack is in the proper position,and secure both to the vehicle andthe ground.

7. Jack up the vehicle by rotating the jackconnection rod clockwise until the tyreis off ground about 1inch (3cm).

6. Place the jack vertically at the front orrear jacking location closest to the wheelyou plan to change.

WARNING

If you remove the bolt withoutholding the tire and carrier, the tireand carrier will drop suddenly sokeep in mind that you could beinjured. If necessary, position thejack under the tire and carrier asshown and slowly get it down byusing the jack.

8. As the jack begins to raise the vehicle,make sure jack is properly placed so itwill not slip.

NOTE

Do not raise vehicle more than isnecessary to change wheel.

WARNING

Never get under car or start or runthe engine while car is supported bya jack.Vehicle may slip off the jackresulting in serious injury or death.

12. Replace and lightly seat the wheel nutsby turning clockwise.

13. Turn jack connection rod counter-clockwise and lower vehicle to theground.

14. Tighten the wheel nuts firmly to 74±14lb-ft (100±20N•m); for steel wheel, 89±7lb-ft (120±10N•m); for aluminum wheelaccording to sequence No. of belowfigure.

15. Check and adjust tyre pressure.16. Secure the jack and tools in their proper

locations.17. Secure the flat tyre in the spare tyre well

on the tailgate.

9. Remove wheel nuts completely byturning counterclockwise.

10. Remove tyre and wheel.11. Mount spare tyre on the wheel hub.

CAUTION

• Never use oil or grease on wheelnuts.

• Always use the correct wheel nuts.• Using the wheel nut wrench in the

vehicle tool kit, tighten the nutdown firmly.

• As soon as possible, take your carto a Ssangyong dealer orSsangyong Authorized ServiceOperation and have the wheel nutstightend according to Ssangyongspecifications.

• If tighten inconnectly, the nutscould come loose.


STARTING THE ENGINE WITHJUMPER CABLES

CAUTION

• Do not try to start vehicle bypushing or pulling it.

• This can damage the catalytic con-verter and automatic transaxle, andmay cause personal injury.

You can start a vehicle that has a dis-charged battery by transferring electricalpower to it from a battery in another vehicle.

WARNING

When using the jack the vehiclecould become unstable and move,damaging the vehicle or badlyinjuring.• Use jack supplied at correct jack-

ing position.• When installing the jack for lift-

ing the vehicle, it should be per-pendicular to the ground.

• Do not go under a jacked-up ve-hicle.

• Do not start engine while jacked up.• Before jacking, get all passengers

out of the vehicle and clear of ve-hicle and other traffic.

• Use jack only for changing wheels.• Do not jack vehicle on an inclined

or slippery surface.• Use jacking position nearest to re-

quired wheel change.• Block wheel diagonally opposite

the wheel to be changed.• Before jacking ensure parking

brake is on and the transmissionis set in 1st or reverse gear(manual transmission) or P (auto-matic transmission).

• Do not jack the vehicle and changethe wheel where traffic is close.

WARNING

Batteries can explode.You could be burned by battery acid.Electrical short could injure you ordamage the vehicles.• Do not expose battery to flames or

sparks.• Do not lean over battery while

jump starting vehicle.• Do not allow cable terminals to

touch each other.• Wear eye protection when working

near any battery.• Do not allow battery fluid to con-

tact eyes, skin, fabric, or paintedsurfaces.

• Make sure battery providing jumpstart has the same voltage as thebattery receiving the jump.

• Do not disconnect dischargedbattery from vehicle.

Failure to follow these precautionsor the following instructions forstarting an engine with jumpercables can cause battery to explode,resulting in burns from battery acid,or electrical short circuit.This can create damage to electricalsystems in both vehicles, and causeserious personal injury.

Before jump starting with an anotherbattery:

1. Apply parking brake.

2. In a vehicle with automatic transmission,shift to PARK; with manual 5 speedtransmission, shift to NEUTRAL.

3. Switch off all electrical accessories.

Attaching Jumper CablesTo jump start your battery, connect thejumper cables in the following order:

1. Connect one clamp of the first lead ofthe jumper cable to the positive terminalof the charged battery. (identified by a"+" sign on the battery case or terminal.)

2. Connect other end of this same jumpercable lead to the positive terminal of thedischarged battery. (the "+" terminal.)

3. Connect one end of the second lead onjumper cable to the negative terminal ofthe charged battery. (identified by a "–"sign on the battery case or terminal.)

CAUTION

Turn audio system off before jumpstarting your vehicle. Otherwise youmay damage audio system

WARNING

Always route jumper cables so theycannot catch on rotating parts in theengine compartment. Otherwise youmay damage vehicle and causeserious personal injury.


Attempts to start the engine of thevehicle with the discharged batteryshould be made at intervals of about oneminute and should not last longer than15 seconds each.

Once the previously discharged vehicle isrunning:

6. Carefully disconnect the groundconnection (“-”). Begin with the vehiclewith the discharged battery.

Leave the discharged vehicle running.

7. Disconnect the negative lead fromvehicle providing the jump.

8. Disconnect the “+” lead from bothbatteries.

9. Operate the discharged vehicle forapproximately 20 minutes. This will allowthe charging system to recharge yourbattery.

10. If this discharge condition recurs, consultyour Ssangyong dealer or an authorizedSsangyong Service Operation.

WARNING

• Last connection to the vehicle tobe charged should NOT be madeto the negative ("–") batteryterminal.

• Attach the clamp for this lastconnection to a steel bracketbolted to the engine block.

• This last connection should be asfar away from the battery aspossible.

• Connecting the jumper cable to thenegative terminal of the dis-charged battery could result inarcing and possibly a battery ex-plosion. Serious personal injury orvehicle damage can result.

4. Make the last connection to a suitableground, such as a steel bracket boltedto the engine block.

5. The engine of the vehicle providing thejump start can be allowed to run duringthe jump start.

TOWING A DISABLED VEHICLEIf it is necessary to tow your vehicle,contact a Ssangyong dealer or a profes-sional tow truck service.

WARNING

• Never let passengers ride in avehicle that is being towed.

• Never tow a vehicle faster thansafe or posted speeds.

• Never tow a vehicle with damagedparts that are not fully secured onthe vehicle.

Failure to observe these precautionscan result in personal injury.


Your vehicle (4 Wheel Drive Vehicles) shouldbe towed with towing dolly under thewheels or on a flat bed.

CAUTION

To tow the vehicle with the front/rearwheels on the ground, never forget todisconnect the front/rear propellershaft from the transfer case or axleassembly and secure them in safeposition.

EMERGENCY TOWINGFor emergency towing when a towingservice is not available, your vehicle isequipped with the towing hooks under thefront and rear of the vehicle for use with atow rope.

• Never tow your vehicle from thefront/rear with the rear/frontwheels on the road.

• If your vehicle must be towed fromthe front/rear, use a towing dollyunder the front wheels.

Towing your vehicle with the rear/front wheels on the road can causesevere damage to your vehicle trans-mission.

WARNING

When towing with a tow rope, controlof towed vehicle can be lost.• Do not tow if the wheels, transmis-

sion, axles, steering or brakes aredamaged.

• Do not remove key from ignitionswitch as this will make the vehicleunsteerable.

When towing your vehicle with the tow rope:• Secure the rope to both of the towing

hooks under the front of the vehicle astight as possible.

• Switch on the hazard warning flasherof both vehicles.

• Place the gearshift lever in neutral andrelease the parking brake.

• Set the ignition in the ON position torelease the steering column lock and topermit the operation of brake lamps,horn and windshield wipers.

• Only the driver should be in the towedvehicle to steer it and operate thebrakes.

• To prevent the entry of exhaust fumesfrom the towing vehicles, close thewindows and place the air intake leverto the recirculation mode.

• Drive off slowly and avoid jerkymovements.

CAUTION

When towing the vehicle with a towrope, the vehicle can be damaged.To reduce damage,• Use tow hooks only if no other

towing equipment is available.• Only tow the vehicle from front.• Keep tow rope clear of bumper.• Ensure tow rope is securely fixed to

tow hook, at both ends. Check bypulling on tow rope.

• Towing with a tow rope couldcause severe automatic transmis-sion damage. When towing vehiclewith automatic transmission, useflat bed or wheel lift equipment.

• When towing another vehicle usethe rear towing hook.

TRAILER TOWING*Your vehicle is designed primarily as apassenger vehicle therefore handling,braking, durability and economy will beaffected by towing a trailer.Your safety and satisfaction depend uponproper use of correct equipment. Also, youshould avoid overloading and other abusiveuse.The maximum loaded trailer weight you canpull with your vehicle depends on yourintended use and what special equipmenthas been installed on it. Before attemptingany towing, ensure that the correctequipment is fitted to your vehicle.Your Ssangyong Dealer will help supply andinstall towing equipment to suit yourrequirement.


Trailer LoadingTo load your trailer properly, you must knowhow to measure gross trailer weight andtrailer ball weight. Gross trailer weight is theweight of the trailer plus all cargo in it.You can measure gross trailer weight byputting the fully loaded trailer on a vehiclescale.Trailer ball weight is the downward forceexerted on the hitch by the trailer coupler atits normal towing height. This weight can bemeasured using a bathroom scale.The weight of your loaded trailer (grosstrailer weight) should never exceed thespecified values.The maximum permissible trailer ball weightis 140kg.The permissible trailer loads are valid forseveral gradients from 6.8% to 12.6% ac-cording to engine power applied.When the trailer has been coupled, thepermissible rear axle load for the fully loadedtowing vehicle (including occupants) mustnot be exceeded.

Maximum Load Limits (unit: kg)WARNING

In higher elevations the engineoutput and gradability may drop sothat it may not be possible for thepermissible trailer loads to be fullyutilized in mountainous territory.So, after 1,000m height, permissibletrailer loads should be reduced 10%every another 1,000m height.

Trailer BrakesIf the trailer brakes are used, you shouldfollow all instructions provided by themanufacturer. Never modify the brakesystem of your vehicle.

Trailer LightsMake sure your trailer is equipped with lightswhich meet country and local requirements.Always check for the proper operation ofall trailer lights before you start to tow.

TyresWhen towing trailers, be sure your tyres areproperly inflated to the inflation pressureshown on page 7-25.

Safety ChainsAlways attach safety chains between yourvehicle and the trailer. Cross the safetychains under the tongue of the trailer so thatthe tongue will not drop to the road if itbecomes separated from the hitch. Followthe manufacturer’s recommendation forattaching safety chains. Always leave justenough slack to permit full turning. Neverallow safety chains to drag on the road.

Brake FluidChange the brake fluid every 15,000km(9,000 miles) under the following conditions.- Towing a trailer frequently.- Driving in hilly or mountainous terrain.

Automatic Transmission FluidMore frequent maintenance is required if yourvehicle tows trailer frequently.

WARNING

Total gross vehicle weight withtrailer must not exceed the GrossVehicle Weight Rating(GVWR) of thevehicle.The total gross vehicle weight is theweight of the vehicle, driver, passen-gers, luggage or cargo, plus theweight of the hitch and the trailertongue weight.

WARNING

Incorrect loading and crosswinds,large trucks passing or road rough-ness can cause swaying or trailerseparation.• Adjust ball load by distribution of

load in trailer.location.• Check by weighing loaded trailer

and ball load separately.• Check the relevant state or terri-

tory registration authorities for thelegal maximum towing weight ca-pacities.


Towing TipsWhen towing a trailer, your vehicle willhandle differently compared with normaldriving condition.

For safety, observe the following precau-tions:• Practice turning, stopping, and reversing

before you begin towing in traffic.Do not tow in traffic until you areconfident that you can handle thevehicle and trailer safely.

• Before driving, make sure that the lightingsystem of the trailer works properly.

• Do not drive faster than 50km/h or legalmaximum speeds, whichever is lower.

• Make sure that you have enough roomwhen cornering and avoid suddenmaneuvers.

• Avoid abrupt starts, acceleration orstops.

• Avoid sharp turns or lane changes.• Always drive your vehicle at a moderate

speed.• Always have someone guide you when

reversing.

• Allow adequate stopping distance.Stopping distance is increased when youtow a trailer.

• Slow down and shift down into a lowergear before descending steep or longdownhill grades. On vehicle equippedwith automatic transmission, select driverange “2” or, if necessary, “1” for enginebraking efforts.

• Avoid holding the brake pedal down toolong or too frequently, which will causethe brakes to overheat and result inreduced brake efficiency.

• Always block the wheels on bothvehicle and trailer when parking. Applythe parking brake firmly.

• Parking on a steep slope is notrecommended.You really should not park your vehicle,with a trailer attached, on a hill.If something goes wrong, such as thetrailer/caravan hitch becoming disen-gaged, people can be injured and boththe vehicle and trailer can be damaged.

• If someone removing the blocks standsdirectly behind the trailer, he could beinjured. If your brakes or the hitchslipped, the trailer could roll backward.Make sure anyone removing blocks fromyour wheels stands to one side.

• Take note of trailer manufacturer’sinstructions.

Driving on GradesReduce speed and shift to a lower gearbefore you start down a long or sleepdowngrade. If you don’t shift down, youmight have to use your brakes so much thatthey would get hot and no longer work well.On a long uphill grade, shift down andreduce your speed to around 40 km/h toreduce the possibility of engine and othercomponents overheating.

Parking on HillsYou really should not park your vehicle, witha trailer attached, on a hill. If something goeswrong, your rig could start to move. Peoplecan be injured, and both your vehicle andthe trailer can be damaged.But if you ever have to park your rig on ahill, here’s how to do it:

1. Apply your regular brakes, but don’t shiftinto PARK (P) for automatic transmissionyet, or into a gear for a manualtransmission.

2. Have someone place chocks under thetrailer wheels.

3. When the wheel chocks are in placerelease the regular brakes until thechocks absorb the load.

4. Reapply the regular brakes. Then applyyour parking brake, and then shift toPARK (P) for automatic transmission, orFirst or Reverse gear for a manualtransmission.

5. Release the regular brakes.

SERVICE PRECAUTIONSWhen performing any inspection or mainte-nance work on your vehicle, always exer-cise care to reduce the risk of personal in-jury or damage to the vehicle.Here are some general precautions thatshould be closely observed in carrying outany service operation.

• Do not work on the engine while it is hot.Always turn it off and allow it to cool.

• Never get under the vehicle while it issupported by a jack. If it is necessaryto work under the vehicle, use safetystands.

• Keep smoking materials, flames, andsparks away from the battery and allfuel and fuel-related parts.

• Never connect or disconnect either thebattery or any transistorized componentwhile the ignition switch is ON.

• When connecting the battery cables, payspecial attention to their polarities. Neverconnect a positive cable to a negativeterminal or a negative cable to a posi-tive terminal.

• Remember that the battery, ignitioncables, and vehicle wiring carry highcurrents or voltage. Be careful not tocause a short circuit.

• When performing any checks in an en-closed space with the engine running,such as in a garage, be sure there isproper ventilation.

• Keep used oil, coolant and other fluidsout of reach of children and pets.

• Empty and used oil/fluid containers mustnot be disposed of in the householdrefuse waste. Use your local authorizedwaste disposal facilities when dispos-ing of them.

• If it is necessary to check beneath theengine hood with the engine running,park the vehicle on level ground, placethe shift lever in NEUTRAL (manualtransmission) or “P” position (automatictransmission) and apply the parkingbrake firmly. Unexpected and possiblysudden vehicle movement may occur ifthese precautions are not taken.

• To avoid the possibility of personal in-jury, you should always turn off the ig-nition switch and remove the key beforeworking under the engine hood unlessthe procedure specifically requires oth-erwise. If it requires running the enginewhile working under the engine hood, donot permit any clothing, such as ties orhandkerchiefs, near the engine or cool-ing fan. They can become entangled inmoving parts and result in personal in-jury and damage to the vehicle. Alsoremove watches, bracelets, and ringsfor safety.

A NOTE ON SAFETYTo avoid the possibility of injury from thecooling fan, carry out all engine checks withthe ignition switched off so that the fan isnot operating.The fan is controlled by ECU (electroniccontrol unit) and consequently may start tooperate unexpectedly.

When the ignition is on, it is also highly dan-gerous to touch live parts as the electronicignition system has a greater current igni-tion power than conventional systems.

ENGINE OILChecking procedureThe engine oil must be kept at the right levelto help assure proper lubrication of yourvehicle’s engine. It is normal for an engineto use some oil. It is owner’s responsibilityto check the oil level at regular intervals(such as every fuel stop).The engine oil level should be checked withthe vehicle standing on level ground.After stopping the engine, wait a few min-utes before checking the level for the oil todrain back to the oil pan. If the engine is cold,the oil may take considerably longer to drainback.To check the oil level, pull out the dipstick,wipe it clean and reinsert it as far as it will

go. Pull it out again and check that the oillevel is between the lower mark (Min) andthe upper mark (Max) on the oil dipstick.Also check the oil on the dipstick rod for con-tamination.If the level gets to the lower point, addenough oil not to exceed the level of theupper mark.The oil should not go above the upper markon the dipstick. This would lead, for example,to increased oil consumption, fouling of thespark plugs and excessive formation ofcarbon residue.When replenishing, use the same specifica-tion of oil as used at the last oil change.

COOLANT LEVELThe cooling system is filled with an ethyl-ene glycol base coolant.In the correct concentration the coolant pro-vides excellent corrosion and freeze protec-tion for the entire cooling and heating sys-tem and must therefore not be replaced byplain water even in summer.The coolant level should be between “LOW”and “FULL” mark on the coolant surge tankwhen the engine is cool. The level rises atengine operating temperature and dropsagain when the engine cools down.If the level falls below the “LOW” mark, refillthe radiator with a 50/50 mix of soft waterand antifreeze specified, to provide freez-ing and corrosion protection.

Engine Oil and Oil Filter ChangeEngine oil changes are to be carried outdepending on time intervals and mileage in-tervals, since oil loses its lubrication prop-erties not only through engine operation butalso through ageing.

Under exceptional conditions e.g. frequentcold starts or predominantly urban traffic andstop-and-go traffic, the engine oil and en-gine oil filter should be changed at shorterintervals rather than the recommended main-tenance schedule.Engine oil filter elements should be replacedat the same time with engine oil.

OVERHEATINGIf the engine coolant temperature gaugeshows an overheating condition or you haveanother reason to suspect the engine maybe overheating, stop and park the vehicle.The air conditioning must be off. Leave theengine idling for a few minutes and checkthat the cooling fan is operating.

If the fan is not operating, turn the ignitionoff and consult your Ssangyong Dealer im-mediately.

If the fan is operating and if steam is notcoming from the engine compartment, openthe engine hood and idle the engine until itcools.

If the fan is operating but the temperature isnot lowered, stop the engine and let it cool.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONFLUID*To ensure proper functioning, efficiency anddurability of the automatic transmission, it isof the utmost importance that the fluid is al-ways kept at the proper level.

The automatic transmission (M74LE) doesnot have a dipstick to check the fluid level.You may have the fluid level checked byyour Ssangyong Dealer or Ssangyong Au-thorized Service Operation.

The only way to find out fluid level decrease is to check if the automatic transmission isleaking.If a fluid leak occurs the vehicle should betaken to your Ssangyong Dealer orSsangyong Authorized Service Operation tobe repaired as soon as possible.

Fluid should not be added to the automatictransmission without properly setting thefluid level. Overfilling the automatic transmis-sion fluid will decrease the automatic trans-mission performance and could damage theunit.

If level is low, add oil untilit begins to run out of the filler hole. SPARK PLUGSSpark plugs should be inspected periodicallyfor carbon deposits. When carbon accumu-lates on a spark plug, a strong spark maynot be produced.If necessary, clean the electrodes with afine wire brush and carefully scrape thecarbon off the insulator with a small file. WINDSHIELD WIPERSProperly functioning windshield wipers areessential for safe driving and clear vision.Check condition of wiper blades from timeto time. Hardened, brittle or smearing bladesmust be replaced.

Since there is no way to successfully re-move traces of silicone from any glass, becertain not to apply any polish containingsilicone to the windshield of your vehiclesince this will result in streaks which impairvision.

Contamination of either the window or thewiper blades with foreign matter can reducethe effectiveness of the windshield wipers.

If the blades are not wiping properly, cleanboth the window and the blades with a goodcleaner or mild detergent, and rinse thor-oughly with clear water.Repeat if necessary.

To replace the wiper blade, press the retain-ing clip and pull the wiper blade off the arm.Simply push the new wiper blade onto thearm.

• Do not use radiator antifreeze inwindshield washer. It can damagethe washer system and paint.

Check the battery terminals for corrosion (awhite or bluish powder). To remove it, coverthe terminals with a solution of baking sodaand water. It will bubble up and turn brown.When this stops, wash it off with plainwater. Dry off the battery with a cloth orpaper towel.

Coat the terminals with petroleum jelly to helpprevent future corrosion.If the terminals are severely corroded, cleanthem with baking soda and water.

Use a wrench to loosen and remove thecables from the terminals. Always discon-nect the negative (-) cable first and recon-nect it last. Clean the battery terminals witha terminal cleaning tool or wire brush. Re-connect and tighten the cable, then coat theterminals with petroleum jelly.

For best battery service, do the following.1. Keep battery securely mounted.2. Keep battery top clean and dry.3. Keep terminals and connections clean,

tight and coated with petroleum jelly orterminal grease.

4. Rinse off any spilled electrolyte immedi-ately with a solution of water and bak-ing soda.

5. If vehicle is not being used for an ex-tended time, disconnect the cable fromthe negative (-) terminal of the batteryto prevent discharge and charge batteryevery six weeks.

BATTERY MAINTENANCEYour vehicle is fitted with a maintenance free(MF) battery without seal plugs.It needs no periodic maintenance.

CATALYTIC CONVERTERThe catalytic converter is located betweenexhaust manifold and center muffler. Thecatalytic converter consists of monolithswith honeycomb shaped structure of ce-ramic material which are elastically mountedin a wire mesh structure.This precious metal coating on the monolithsaccelerate the reduction and/or oxidation oftoxic components.On vehicles with a catalytic converter forunleaded fuel, lead fuel will damage the cata-lytic converter and parts of the electronicsystem, thereby rendering them inoperative.

Tyre Inflation PressureMaintaining the specified tyre pressure isessential for driver comfort, driving safetyand long tyre life. Check the tyre pressure,including the spare wheel, at least every 14days and prior to any long journey. The tyresshould be checked in a cold condition usingan accurate tyre pressure gauge.

Increased pressure resulting from tyrewarm-up must not be reduced, otherwisethe pressure may drop below the permis-sible minimum.Securely retighten valve caps after check-ing pressure.Incorrect inflation pressures will increasetyre wear and will impair safety, vehicle han-dling, comfort and fuel economy.If the pressure is too low, this can result inconsiderable tyre warm-up and internal dam-age, leading to tread separation and evento tyre blowout at high speeds.Hidden tyre damage is not eliminated by sub-sequently adjusting the inflation pressure.

You should therefore avoid :

• Frequent repeated cold starts.• Actuation of the starter for an unnec-

essarily long time during starting (fuel isinjected during the starting procedure).

• Allowing the tank to become empty (anirregular fuel supply leads to overheat-ing)

• Starting the engine by pushing or tow-ing (unburned fuel may enter the cata-lytic converter) : use jump leads.

Check tread depth regularly. To help youdetect when the tyres should be replaced,the tyres on your vehicle have built-in treadwear indicators that appear between thetread grooves when the tread is 1.6mm orless. The tyres should be replaced when thetread worn down as far as one of the wearindicators. The wear indicator’s position isindicated by markings on the tyre side wall.For safety reasons, it is recommended thatthe tyres be replaced when their tread depthhas worn down to 2~3mm.When replacing the tyres, the radial tyresshould be fitted in pairs, or for preferencein sets.

Make sure that both tyres on an axle are thesame size, the same design, and the samemake and have the same tread pattern.

Tyre Condition, Rim ConditionDriving over sharp edges can lead to hid-den tyre damage and rim damage which isonly noticed later on : there is a danger oftyre blowout.Drive over edges slowly and at right angleif possible. When parking, ensure that thetyres are not pressed against the edge ofthe curb.Check tyres regularly for damage (foreignbodies, punctures, cuts, cracks, bulges inside walls). A damaged tyre could burst.Check rims for damage. HEAD LAMP HIGH AND LOW BEAMAND TURN SIGNAL LAMP1. Open the engine hood and engage the

support.2. Rotate the plastic cap counterclockwise

and remove.3. Unscrew the 3 mounting bolts and dis-

connect the wiring harness connectorfrom the rear of the turn signal lamp.

4. Disconnect the wiring harness connec-tor from the rear of the headlamp andremove the protective cover.

5. Release the bulb holder, then remove thelight bulb.

6. Replace the bulb with a new one.

Turn signal lamp7. If necessary, replace the turn signal lamp

bulb with a new one.

8. Install is the reverse order of removal.When installing new bulb, make sure thatbulb holder engages correctly in re-cesses of the housing.

9. Rotate the plastic cap clockwise until itfirmly engages.

TAIL, BRAKE AND REAR TURNSIGNAL LAMP1. Open the tailgate and remove the pro-

tective lamp cover.2. Unscrew the nuts.

- Brake/Position lamp : 8EA.- Reverse/Turn signal lamp : 4EA.

3. Rotate the bulb holder counterclockwiseand remove the bulb holder from thelamp housing.

4. Depress the bulb and rotate it counter-clockwise to remove it from the bulbholder.

5. Replace the bulb with a new one.6. Install is the reverse order of removal.

CLEANING AGENTSFollow the manufacturer’s advice whenevercleaning agents or other chemicals are used,inside or outside the vehicle. Some clean-ers may be poisonous or flammable, andimproper use may cause personal injury ordamage. When cleaning the inside or outsideof the vehicle, do not use volatile cleaningsolvents such as : acetone, lacquerthinners, enamel reducers, nail polish remov-ers: or cleaning materials such as laundrysoaps, bleaches or reducing agents, exceptas noted in the fabric cleaning advice onstain removal. Never use carbon tetrachlo-ride, petrol, benzene, or naphtha for anycleaning purpose. Open all vehicle doors forventilation when any cleaning agents orother chemical are used in the interior. Over-exposure to some vapors may result in ahealth problem which is more likely to occurin small, unventilated spaces.To avoid possible permanent discoloration oflight colored seats, do not let materials withnon-fast colors come in contact with seattrim materials until these materials are totallydry. This includes certain types of casualclothing, such as colored denims, corduroys,leathers and suedes : also decorative pa-per, etc.

CARE AND CLEANING OF THEINTERIORWith the use of modern trim materials, it isvery important that you use proper cleaningtechniques and cleaners. Failing to do thison the first cleaning may result in waterspots, spot rings, or setting of stains orsoils-all of which are more difficult to removein a second cleaning.Dust and loose dirt that collect on interiorfabrics should be frequently removed witha vacuum cleaner or soft bristle brush. Wipevinyl or leather trim regularly with a cleandamp cloth. Normal trim soils, spots or stainscan be cleaned with cleaners:

Safety Belt Care• Keep belts clean and dry.• Clean safety belts only with mild soap

and lukewarm water.• Do not bleach or dye belts since this may

severely weaken them.

GLASS SURFACESGlass surfaces should be cleaned on a regu-lar basis. The use of glass cleaner or a liq-uid household glass cleaner will removenormal tobacco smoke and dust films some-times caused by ingredients used in vinyl’sand interior plastics.Never use abrasive cleaners on any vehicleglass, as they may cause scratches. If abra-sive cleaners are used on the inside of therear window, any electric demister elementmay be damaged. Avoid placing decals onthe inside rear window, since they mayhave to be scraped off later.

Cleaning the Outside of WindshieldIf your windshield is not clear after using thewindshield washer, or if the wiper bladechatters when running, wax or anothermaterial may be on the blade or windshieldClean the outside of the windshield withcleaning powder or an equivalent non abra-sive cleaner. Your windshield is clean ifbeads do not form when rinsing with wa-ter.

Washing your VehicleThe best way to preserve your vehicle’sfinish is to keep it clean by frequentwashings.Wash the vehicle in lukewarm or cold wa-ter.Do not use hot water or wash your vehiclein the direct rays of the sun. Do not usestrong soap or chemical detergent. All clean-ing agents should be flushed promptly fromthe surface and not allowed to dry on thefinish.Ssangyong vehicles are designed to oper-ate under normal environmental conditionsand to withstand the natural elements. How-ever, unusual conditions, such as high pres-sure car washes, may cause water to en-ter inside the vehicle.

Polishing and WaxingPeriodic polishing and waxing is recom-mended to remove surface residue fromyour paint finish. Approved products aresupplied through your Ssangyong Dealer.

Protecting exterior bright metal partsBright metal parts should be cleaned regu-larly to keep their luster. Washing with wa-ter is all that is usually needed.Use special care with aluminum trim. wheels, and wheel coversPreserve the original appearance of wheelsor wheel covers by keeping then clean andfree from build-up of road dirt and/or roadsalt. Regular cleaning is recommended. Donot use abrasive cleaners or cleaningbrushes, as they could damage the finish.

CORROSION PROTECTIONYour car was designed to resist corrosion.Special materials and protective finisheswere used on most parts of your car whenit was built to help maintain a good appear-ance, strength and reliable operation. Someparts which normally are not visible (suchas certain parts located in the engine com-partment and the underbody of the vehicle)are such that surface rust will not affecttheir reliability. Therefore, corrosion protec-tion is not needed or used on these parts.

Sheet metal damageIf your car is damaged and requires bodypanel repair or replacement, make sure thebody repair shop applies proper anticorro-sion material to the parts repaired or re-placed so that corrosion protection is re-stored. (Also see “Finish damage” whichfollows).

Foreign material depositsCalcium chloride and other salts, ice meltingagents, road oil and tar, tree sap, bird drop-pings, chemicals from industrial chimneysand other foreign matter may damage ve-hicle finishes if left on painted surface.Prompt washing may not completely remove

all of these deposits. Other cleaners may beneeded.When using chemical cleaners, be sure theyare safe for use on painted surfaces.

Finish damageAny stone chips, fractures or deepscratches in the finish should be repairedpromptly. Bare metal will corrode quickly andmay develop into a major repair expense.Minor chips and scratches can be repairedwith touch-up materials. Larger areas of fin-ish damage can be corrected in yourDealer’s body and paint shop.

Underbody maintenanceCorrosive materials used for ice and snowremoval and dust control can collect on theunderbody. If these materials are not re-moved, accelerated corrosion (rust) can oc-cur on underbody parts such as fuel lines,frame, floor pan and the exhaust systemeven though they have been provided withcorrosion protection.At least every spring, flush these materialsfrom the underbody with plain water.

Take care to clean any areas where mudand other debris can collect. Sedimentpacked in closed areas of the frame shouldbe loosened before being flushed. If desired,your Ssangyong Dealer can do this servicefor you.

CAUTION

When an engine is washed, fuel,grease and oil residues are washedoff. Therefore you should use only afilling station or a Ssangyong Dealerwho has oil separator equipment inthe car wash bay.Used engine oil, brake fluid, trans-mission fluid, antifreeze, batteriesand tyres should be disposed of byusing the local authorized waste dis-posal facilities, or have them dis-posed of by the vendor who is undera statutory obligation to do so whenyou replace them.On no account must any of theseitems be placed in the householdrefuse bins or the fluids poured downthe drains.Everyone should be concerned aboutenvironmental protection.Help by doing your share.
