Here we are almost to the end of another long, hot summer in the Valley of the Sun. The monsoons have been fairly active bringing much needed rains to our parched desert and - in some cases - our parched lawns. The stores are advertising back to school supplies and before we know it the school buses will be running again and the kids will be back in class. With the end of summer comes an increase in Real Estate activity with sellers deciding it is time to sell and buyers deciding to get into their new homes when they won’t melt in the heat. Inventory continues to be very slim which means that well priced homes that show well are selling quickly and for more money. Although it has been determined that we will not be experiencing another housing bubble, prices are still higher on “in demand” homes. Scottsdale Ranch has always and will continue to be one of those “in demand” areas. We would love to represent you in the sale of your home and we hope that - should you decide to buy or sell - you will contact us. Board BriefsJune Meetings

➢ July Board meeting canceled.

➢ Voted to continue Brian Juedes’ membership on the Architectural Committee.

➢ Approved to set the quorum requirement for all SRCA Committees at three (3).

➢ The Board was updated on all applicable planned-community legislation recently passed for 2014.

➢ Updates were presented on the items from the Conversation Café.

➢ Kathe and Lea have met with City of Scottsdale officials regarding the updating of the Scottsdale Ranch Park playground equipment. Various funding options were discussed. Kathe has met with a company who will present designs and costs to upgrade the playground.

Annual Assessment Late Feesannual assessment invoices were mailed out to all Scottsdale Ranch residents in mid-December with a due date of January 1, 2014. The 30-day grace period gave residents adequate time to make payments, as payments were not considered delinquent until February 1, 2014. all payments received in our office after January 31, 2014 were considered late and have been assessed a late fee. Starting February 28, 2014, all accounts not paid were assessed additional interest, at a rate of 12% per annum, or $3.40 per month until it is paid. If you still have not yet paid your 2014 assessment, a lien will be placed on your property and further collection action may be taken.

a seven member Board of Directors governs Scottsdale Ranch Community association (SRCa). The Board establishes the basic policies of the association and oversees the operation of the professional staff. The Board of Directors meets the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Community Center. These meetings are open to the membership. WHY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATIONS WORK

as I write this article, I wonder – are homeowner associations a blessing or a curse? What is the fundamental mission of our community association? Is it merely the protection of property values and/or providing for the maintenance of the common areas?

Those of you that have known me over the years would hopefully agree that my philosophy on Hoas reaches beyond the aspects of rule enforcement and common areas. I truly believe a successful community association must look beyond the neatly kept yards and the rows of houses. Being a part of a community is more than just paying assessments. It is about being a part of a neighborhood bond where we can bring people together and strengthen that sense of belonging – be a place where people LIVE! We must build a sense of community.

our Board and myself continues to work on enhancing the sense of community; concentrating on matters that unite rather than divide. By bringing neighbors together and finding ways to help one another, we can build a stronger, more stable community.

a colleague told me many, many years ago that a successful manager would be wise to decree less and educate more – work on consensus building as much as on rule making. By doing this, an association can achieve a high level of compliance. The membership has established a shared desire to maintain aesthetics and standards, and I see this each and every day as I drive throughout the Ranch. a strong sense of pride of ownership exists amongst our residents. Scottsdale Ranch is not just a place where people have invested their money in a house; it is a place where they LIVE and can call home.

I have just completed my 30th year with Scottsdale Ranch Community association and am proud to be a part of such a premier community with an incredible group of people. Thank you for allowing me to continuously lead Scottsdale Ranch to bigger and better things year after year, I am truly honored.

Each year, following elections, the SRCa Board of Directors holds a retreat. Traditionally, this event is a chance for the board to review recent and on-going projects and look at what we want to continue working on for the following year.

This year, however, the meeting took a slightly different direction. The board members and our Executive Director Kathe Barnes were led by board member, Mike Vandermark (who is an expert consultant on organizational effectiveness) in an afternoon of focusing on visioning for our association. Instead of looking at just the upcoming year, your board took a much longer view of the possibilities for our association’s future. For that reason, one of the board members joked that we should rename the meeting from “retreat” to “advance.”

We began by documenting many of the attributes that make SRCa unique. We noticed some common themes and demonstrated great pride in the things that make SRCa such a desirable place to live. The combination of these great factors (which included Lake Serena, the sound finances, the many social events, our great staff, etc.) certainly makes this an exceptional place to live.

Next we brainstormed major trends in society, in homeowner associations in general, and in Scottsdale Ranch. We discussed national and local trends, generational and demographic issues, and the impact of Hoa-related legislation. This part of our session also showed common themes, but also many new ideas and thoughts surfaced.

It is no secret that Scottsdale Ranch’s esteemed reputation is a ref lection of residents, board, staff and overall sense of community. over the past 30 years, Executive Director, Kathe Barnes, has made Scottsdale Ranch a main priority and dedicated her efforts for one reason, the residents. There were other opportunities for growth within the Hoa industry but the thought of leaving the Ranch was like leaving home. Kathe began her Hoa career in accounting, but quickly gained a passion and knowledge of what it meant to be part of a community. “She can see the Ranch as more than just a place to live, she has the ability to see the big picture and really made it her mission to learn everything about the community of

Scottsdale Ranch,” says current staff member, Kassie Sheerin. Scottsdale Ranch Community association (SRCa) is proud to congratulate our leader, Kathe Barnes on her 30 year work anniversary at SRCa. Cheers to you Kathe, and thank you for your years of service and love for Scottsdale Ranch!

The third step was an eye-opener. Breaking into teams, we tried to imagine and describe a scenario in which these trends were magnified and accelerated – and then to figure out what we would need to do differently to respond to these imagined scenarios.

I personally found this portion the most fascinating. This time each of the three teams came up with very different imagined futures, which of course resulted in completely different suggested strategies for dealing with these possible futures.

Before we ended our session, Mike took us through an introduction to group decision-making processes. We learned about the various ways that groups interact and reach decisions, including the strengths and weaknesses of various techniques.

What did we gain from this retreat? I think each board member got something different, but for me, there were two main benefits.

First, we got a chance to learn something about each other: our strengths, our different styles; and the unique skills each person brings to the board. We have some continuing, some returning and some new board members this year, and we are comprised of people of different ages, generations, backgrounds, and work experience. I think now we are better able to understand how we can work together more effectively to help maintain and improve the quality of life and property values of Scottsdale Ranch.

and second, I feel our minds were freed up to consider possibilities we’d never before considered. I think it’s much like doing stretching exercises before an athletic event; our minds were limbered up so that over the next year the board and Executive Director will better be able to serve the owners and residents of Scottsdale Ranch.

So it looks like it’s going to be a great year, filled with improvements and expanding possibilities! and we can’t do it without your help. Please contact our staff at the Community Center to volunteer to serve on one or more of our various committees.

When we moved into our home in May 2012, the home was perfect except for one thing, a playground for our two young boys ages 2 and 4. With a lot of hard work, Pete Lugowski & Pete Wenz of Express Turf Direct, along with myself, constructed a playground area for our boys on the East side of our backyard. Get hot water fast!Thanks to a Scottsdale Ranch resident of St. Tropez Estates.

Like probably many other houses here, our water heater is stored in the garage - far from the bathrooms, which meant a 2-3 minutes wait for hot water every day. It was a huge waste of precious water, not to mention annoying having to wait.

We purchased a $200 Grundfos hot water-circulation pump, got a permit from the city, and installed it ourselves in one hour. We now have shower-ready warm water in 10 seconds and hot water within a minute. The pump is on a timer so it only circulates the hot water during certain hours of the day (morning and evening, when we typically need it the most) to save electricity.

Best of all: the pump was virtually free because the city provides rebates of up to $200. If you cannot install it yourself, a plumber can do it for around $150. The annual water-savings are easily in the 1,000s of gallons per year.

Quick Tip! Putting your water heater on a timer can help save on your electricity bill!

Sonoran Desert Women: A New Way to Support Our Preserve Sonoran Desert Women, part of the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, is a group of 100 women who seek to raise awareness and share the history of the McDowell Mountains and its settle-ment. They focus on the role pioneer, and Native american, women have played in the growth and development of the land within, and surrounding, the Preserve. The group obtains, preserves, and elevates women’s stories about the challenges faced and progress achieved of living and working in the Sonoran desert. These stories create role models for future generations to admire and emulate.

Started only last year, Sonoran Desert Women have already hon-ored the courage and dedication of Scottsdale’s settlers through their role in developing the multi-media Brown’s Ranch Interpretive Center featured at the Preserve’s Brown’s Ranch trailhead. In addition, the group sponsors lectures, hikes, social events, and a book club.

“The Sonoran Desert Women raised the funds and helped cre-

ate the first trailhead in the Preserve that focuses on the human history of this region. We are most appreciative of the women who joined as Founders of this organization and helped lay the founda-tion for future projects and fun activities,” said Leslie Dashew, McDowell Sonoran Conservancy board member and Sonoran Desert Women chair.

Power failures can be one of the most annoying—and disabling—occurrences in a community. Whether caused by summer storms, power lines crippled by winter ice, equipment failure, an overloaded regional grid or an animal disrupting a power line, electrical outages can be costly, uncomfortable—and without forethought—sometimes even dangerous.

Residents can face many hazards when a power failure occurs—usually without any warning—including losing refrigerated and frozen foods. Some food items can be salvaged, however, if you’re prepared.

In anticipation of a power failure:

• Haveatleastoneortwocoolersonhand,and at least one spare 5-pound bag of ice in the freezer.

• Knowwheretogetbag,blockordryicequickly when you need it, particularly if you anticipate a long-term outage. (Caution: Dry ice is made from carbon dioxide, so it requires safe handling. Never breathe in its vapors or touch it with your bare hands.) according to the Food Safety Branch of Kentucky’s Department of Health, a 50-pound block of dry ice will keep a tightly packed, 18-cubic-foot freezer cool for up to two days.

• Haveaninstantfoodthermometerorappliancethermometeravailable to ensure your freezers, refrigerators and coolers are staying cool enough store food safely.

• Arrangetherefrigeratorandfreezerefficiently.Frozenfood

FOOD SAFETY DURING A POWER OUTAGE

will last longer in a full freezer—up to 48 hours if tightly packed—and refrigerated food will last longer—up to four hours—if there is room for air to circulate around items.

When the electricity goes off:

• Avoidopeningandclosingtherefrigeratorunlessabsolutelynecessary.

• Cookanduseperishablefoodbeforeusingcannedfood.

• Check the temperatureof refrigerated foods if thepower isout for more than a few hours. Discard any food item than has been at 40° F or warmer for two or more hours. Exceptions include butter and margarine; hard cheeses like parmesan and Romano; some condiments like mustard, peanut butter, soy sauce, olives and vinegar-based salad dressing; and fresh, uncooked fruits and vegetables.

• Checkthetemperatureoffrozenfoodsaswell.Whiletightlypacked freezer foods will stay frozen for many hours, some items that may have thawed can be refrozen if they still retain ice crystals or have remained at a temperature lower than 40°. Fruit and vegetable juices; breads, rolls and pie crusts; f lour, cornmeal and nuts; meat and chicken; and prepared foods and casseroles can be refrozen safely if they have not been at 40° F or warmer for more than two hours.

• Afterthepowercomesbackon,youmayneedtodeodorizethe refrigerator and freezer by washing surfaces with a solution of 2 tablespoons baking soda dissolved in a quart of warm water. Place an open box of baking soda inside the refrigerator to absorb any lingering odors.

Since the appearance and odor of a food item isn’t an accurate indication of its safety after a power outage, use the 40° rule-of-thumb. and when in doubt, discard the food.

While a power can go out any time, most power failures occur between mid-July and late September. But no matter when our community experiences an outage—and it inevitably will—knowing how to handle frozen and refrigerated foods can help us keep your food supplies safe until the lights come back on.

The later part of the summer brings monsoon rains, and they can’t come soon enough. While the monsoon season will bring much needed rain to our desert environment, the storms also pose the biggest weather related risk for trees. To help prepare for monsoon wind and rain, DLC Resources thins the crown of Scottsdale Ranch’s tree inventory throughout the year as part of our long term tree plan.

Now is a great time to assess the condition of your trees. Remove overly thick foliage, correct damage from previous storms and remove dead or structurally unsound branches to minimize the chance the tree will be damaged or cause damage during a storm. I receive calls on a daily basis from residents who have some issues concerning their neighbor. While each call is different, the basic problems are the same.

• PARKING–AneighborhaschosentoignoretheCC&Rsandcontinuallyparks a vehicle or vehicles in the street. Sometimes blocking their neighbor’s sight line, driveway or trash containers when placed out for pick up; which creates a hazard. Garage and driveway spaces MUST be used prior to parking on the street. Please be considerate of your neighbors.

• TREES–Pleasekeepyourtreesneatlytrimmed.Theslightestbreezecancreate a mess in your neighbor’s yard and swimming pool. all palms must be cut back on a yearly basis; preferably in June/July. But it is never too late!

• NUISANCES–Asyoucanimagine,thiscoversalotofterritory!• Petwaste-Whetheryouareonawalkorinyourownbackyard.When

your dog poops, please pick it up! • Noise-Barking,music,firecrackers.Pleasebeconsiderate!• Feedingwildanimalsandbirds–Whileyoumightthinkthisis‘helping’

the animals, it is not. This practice only complicates the issue and is strictly prohibited in the CC&Rs.

• Lighting–Youmaynot realize that the ‘safety’ lightyou just installedis shining in your neighbor’s bedroom all night. Please remember all exterior lighting must be soft and indirect white or yellow bulbs focused downward. Landscape lighting must be low voltage. all new lighting, front or back, requires prior architectural approval.

Some may not be aware, but located right within Scottsdale Ranch’s own boundaries, located over at the Scottsdale Ranch Park on the corner of Via Linda and Lakeview Drive is our very own Desert Garden Park. This beautiful park was designed to enhance the understanding of the Sonoran Desert, of botanical processes, and of the geology and soil materials indigenous to the nearby McDowell Mountains. The Garden Park features three zones: a hummingbird nest for the low desert area, a saguaro and bat sanctuary for the high desert area, and a butterf ly garden for the riparian community area. The park is free and open to the public.

The Desert Garden Park first opened in 2003. Scottsdale Ranch played an intricate role in the development of this amenity. Back in 1979, the developer of Scottsdale Ranch donated 64 acres of land to the City of Scottsdale for a General Public Use area in the heart of its master-planned community. The City of Scottsdale actively pursued various parties to build a public use facility on a five acre parcel on the corner of Via Linda and Lakeview Drive. The SRCa Board of Directors, staff and a special volunteer Park Committee, comprised of SRCa residents, spearheaded fundraising efforts and proactively participated in the development of this site. The garden has since been a treasured amenity for Scottsdale residents. If you haven’t already, be sure to take a few moments to go and experience this great area.

We love, love, love that you take us on walks all the time, all over the Ranch! our walks along Mountainview, I cherish them. all the plants, your friends, my friends, shade, it’s so wonderful! I think my favorite days are when we walk all the way to the community center and those nice people give me treats and pet me. I like them, speaking of them, they asked me to remind you of a few things when we go on our walks together. Remember, it’s not their fault – they just want my cute self to benefit the most from our walks and the Ranch. after all, it’s my home too!

• Please do not take the mutt mitt bags to useat our home, there needs to be enough for everybody to use while out and about on the Ranch

shrimp)• 2cupswater• 2/3cuplightcoconutmilk• 11/4cupsuncookedlong-grainrice• 3/4cupshreddedcarrot• 2cupsdicedpeeledmango(about2mangoes)• 11/2cupsdicedredbellpepper• 1/2cupslicedgreenonions• 1tablespoonchoppedfreshcilantro• 1tablespoonchoppedfreshparsley• 2tablespoonsfreshlimejuice• 1/2teaspoonsalt• Cookingspray• Cilantrosprigs(optional)

PREPARATION:Combine first 6 ingredients in a medium bowl. Add shrimp; toss to coat. Cover and chill 1 hour.

Bring water and coconut milk to a boil in a medium saucepan; add rice. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 15 minutes or until the liquid is absorbed. Add carrot and next 7 ingredients (through salt); toss gently to combine.

Prepare grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.

Thread 3 shrimp onto each of 12 (6-inch) skewers. Place skewers on grill rack or grill pan coated with cooking spray; grill 3 minutes on each side or until shrimp are done. Serve skewers over salad. Garnish with cilantro sprigs, if desired.

Stop Mail Theft!

In the Community…

Residents should always use the Blue Post office boxes and not place outgoing mail in their mailbox. Raising the red f lag on a mailbox of outgoing mail indicates to someone passing by that there is outgoing mail in the mailbox. Mail theft gets reported to the United States Postal Inspectors. Mail theft is a concern throughout the year nationally and the United States Postal Service offers these tips:

Keep it Cool, Keep it LocalIt’s time to pay the price for eight beautiful months out of the year by staying as cool as possible during the high summer temperatures. There aren’t too many city events going on because well, you guessed it – it’s hot. But lucky for us here in the Valley, there are so many fun activities and attractions to keep cool this summer!

1. Take a day trip to one of the beautiful cities up north! Whether it is Flagstaff, Sedona, Williams, Prescott, Payson or the Grand Canyon, Northern arizona is a perfect getaway. Enjoy outdoor hikes, boating, festivals, camping and more all in a comfortable 80 degrees. Be sure to drink lots of water anytime going up north to avoid heat exhaustion and dehydration. 2. Phoenix is home to many fun and educational museums. Check out some favorites: arizona Science Center, Children’s Museum of Phoenix, Heard Museum, Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) and Phoenix art Museum. Museum entrance fees can add up so first check to see if they offer a discounted day. Scottsdale Public Libraries also offer the Culture Pass, allowing cardholders free admission for 2 people at participating organizations, including: arizona Science Center, Children’s Museum of Phoenix, Deer Valley Rock art Center, Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix Zoo and more! 3. Salt River Tubing is a local tradition! It’s not summer until you get some friends together to take a tube ride down the Salt River. 4. Who says you can’t enjoy sports during record breaking summers? Visit Indoor Sport activity centers for go karting, trampolines, ice skating, roller blading, batting cages and golf! We suggest using google or yelp to find your preferred sport facility.

5. Recreational parks can be a fun way to distract from the heat. Many of the Scottsdale Recreational parks are shaded and some have water activities! Tired of the swings and monkey bars? Mix it up and give ice-blocking a try! Visit


Water’n Ice to purchase a block of ice, grab an old towel, find a nice grassy hill with a safe slope and voila you have summer sledding!

6. Make use of your local Lake Serena! Residents of Scottsdale Ranch are welcome to free recreational boat rentals. 8. There are many trails for an early morning hike in the Valley. You’re not a true arizona Hiker if you haven’t hiked the beloved, Camelback Mountain. Camelback offers many trails for all hikers at any experience level. If you hike, make sure to tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back and drink plenty of water. 9. Spend a day at the Mall! Yes, this can be enjoyed all year long but sometimes on the really hot days it is nice to spend the whole day at the mall.
