Why We Are Here?

The purpose of this meeting is to provide more detailed design then what was presented at the October 2016 Public Information Open House (PIOH). For the southern unit, you’ll be able to view more project detail than we brought in October (which side of the road the widening will occur; proposed areas of rights-of-way and easement; and how we propose to tie-in the side roads.) Since our October Open House, a new truck route is being proposed closer to McCaysville to minimize impacts to properties. In addition, we are proposing pedestrian and streetscape improvements along the existing SR 5 from the truck route starting point to the Toccoa/Ocoee River Bridge.

As noted at the previous Open House, the purpose of the projects is to improve the safety and operations along SR 5 and provide large trucks an alternative option to downtown McCaysville.

This handout includes several maps/figures to help better understand the proposed projects. The index shows both project corridors from Blue Ridge to McCaysville. Figures A and B provide a closer representation with key road names labeled (As shown on the index - Figure A represents the southern half of the corridor and Figure B represents the northern half). Finally, Figures C and D show the proposed conceptual alignment of PI# 620490, which includes the proposed truck route.

Proposed Project Description

The proposed project calls for improvements to State Route (SR) 5 from Highway 515 just north of Blue Ridge to Old Flowers Road and the construction of a truck route on new location west of the city of McCaysville from Old Flowers Road to Tennessee Highway 68 just north of the Tennessee State line. These proposed improvements are included in two projects. The first project would widen SR 5 from two to four lanes with a center two-way left-turn lane, beginning just north of Blue Ridge at SR 515/Appalachian Development Highway and extending to Old Flowers Road, where SR 5 would transition back to the existing two lane roadway. Finally, The second project would start at Old Flowers Road and end at Tennessee Highway 68. Starting at Old Flowers Road, the proposed project would maintain the existing two 12-foot lane roadway with 10-foot shoulders. From Holly Lane to Kingtown Street, the project would maintain the existing two 12-foot lane roadway, add curb and gutter and construct 5-foot sidewalks on both sides of the roadway. From Kingtown Street, the project proposes to construct a new location two lane truck route to the west of downtown McCaysville. The proposed truck route would bridge over the Ocoee River and Highway 68 before tying into Tennessee 68 at approximately Colonial Avenue. The project proposes to make pedestrian improvements on the existing SR 5 shoulders from approximately School Street to West Tennessee Avenue. Rights of way and easements are required for both projects along the mainline road and side roads.
