A VALUABLE TONIC AND REMEDIAL AGENT. INDORSED AND RECOMMENDED BV THE EXTIRK MEDICAL, FRATERNITY. Of Mil medicinal preparations that have been put ripon the market in recent yeans, the extract of malt has proved itself one of the most Valuable as a tonin or remedial beverage. It has received the unqualified recognition and support of phy- sicians, and is freely prescribed by them in manv cases, especially where the nervous or physical systems have been impaired by disease or over. ork. TUe house of "DAVID NICUOLfcON," of this city, has recently introduced a pure malt extract ol high character, made at their request and under their suggestions by Mr. Adolphus. P.bsc h, and which is popularly known as "NICH- OLSON'S LIQUID BItEAD," from its life-givin- g and health-restorin- g properties. A sample sub- mitted to Dr. F. L. James was made the subject of a chemical analysis by him, and the result of his investigations are given in the appended cer- tificate: " t. I oris, April --!., ISSJ. " VV. I". Cori.Tr K. Esij., Xatioiml Druggist Dear Sir: Having submitted the Nicholson malt ex- tract to examination, as reiintsted, I take pleasure in reporting that I Hnd it to be all that the pro prietors ciaim ior it. a tie results, assuown In the following summary are necessarily only approxi mate, but are sufficiently accurate for all practical purposes. J "The jneehnens submitted consisted of an effervescing fluid, dark brown by direct and of a oeep ruby color by transmitted light, resembling in general appearance and behavior a very supe rior article of porter. Its taste' was, however miit'ii milder and more pleasant than porter, be nig somewhat sweeter than beer, the sweetness masked aud covered by a very pleasant bitter, derived evidently from hops. The specific gravity or a sample rresh 1. om the botUe is 1.022 plus, Amount of extractive matter in, 50 cubic cent! metres of the fluid is 3.96 grammes, or about 8 per cent. Amount of alcohol, per cent, is 2.84 plus. The extractive matter is apoareutly identical with the "extractum malt Is" of Trommer, or of the Herman Pharmacopoeia. It consists almost en- tirely of malt sugar, dextrine, being free from fatty acids, etc. The fluid contains a very large amount of diastase, as shown by the fact that it easily liquefies an equal bulk of gelatinous starch This fact, its low percentage of alcohol, its effer vescence, its delightful taste and odor, all combine to recommend Nicholson's malt extract as being a most nourishing beverage, aud the best article oi tne sort mat nas ever come miner my exami nation. AN ABSOLUTELY PUKE EXTRACT OFMALT.

A VALUABLE TONIC AND REMEDIALAGENT.

INDORSED AND RECOMMENDED BV THEEXTIRK MEDICAL, FRATERNITY.

Of Mil medicinal preparations that have been putripon the market in recent yeans, the extract ofmalt has proved itself one of the most Valuableas a tonin or remedial beverage. It has receivedthe unqualified recognition and support of phy-sicians, and is freely prescribed by them in manvcases, especially where the nervous or physicalsystems have been impaired by disease or over.

ork. TUe house of "DAVID NICUOLfcON,"of this city, has recently introduced a pure maltextract ol high character, made at their requestand under their suggestions by Mr. Adolphus.P.bsc h, and which is popularly known as "NICH-OLSON'S LIQUID BItEAD," from its life-givin- g

and health-restorin- g properties. A sample sub-mitted to Dr. F. L. James was made the subjectof a chemical analysis by him, and the result ofhis investigations are given in the appended cer-tificate:

Sir: Having submitted the Nicholson malt ex-tract to examination, as reiintsted, I take pleasurein reporting that I Hnd it to be all that the proprietors ciaim ior it. a tie results, assuown In thefollowing summary are necessarily only approximate, but are sufficiently accurate for all practicalpurposes. J

"The jneehnens submitted consisted of aneffervescing fluid, dark brown by direct and of aoeep ruby color by transmitted light, resemblingin general appearance and behavior a very superior article of porter. Its taste' was, howevermiit'ii milder and more pleasant than porter, benig somewhat sweeter than beer, the sweetnessmasked aud covered by a very pleasant bitter, derived evidently from hops. The specific gravityor a sample rresh 1. om the botUe is 1.022 plus,Amount of extractive matter in, 50 cubic cent!metres of the fluid is 3.96 grammes, or about 8 percent. Amount of alcohol, per cent, is 2.84 plus. The extractive matter is apoareutly identical withthe "extractum malt Is" of Trommer, or of theHerman Pharmacopoeia. It consists almost en-tirely of malt sugar, dextrine, being free fromfatty acids, etc. The fluid contains a very largeamount of diastase, as shown by the fact that iteasily liquefies an equal bulk of gelatinous starchThis fact, its low percentage of alcohol, its effervescence, its delightful taste and odor, all combineto recommend Nicholson's malt extract as beinga most nourishing beverage, aud the best articleoi tne sort mat nas ever come miner my examination. Tliis idea is ridiculous. Mr. l'earce is.an eminently practical man, and pyin-patlxiz- cs

all the time with monoijoly ;

but he finds himself in the unfortunateposition of a good many other Britishshipbuilders just now, of having a fleet ofunsuitable steamships tlu-ow- n ujion'his.hands, without any prosiect of employ- -

. to force two of these upon the contractorsfor the Australian mail service on hisown terms or else compel them to buyhim off. He will succeed in neither en-

terprise, but he may succeed in placingthis community in a very false positionregarding the Treaty and the commercialrelations of the. Hawaiian ' Kingdomtowards the United States. This is apoint which the .Opposition, press andthe enemies of Colonel Spreckels haveforgotten, but it is one which the Ameri-can press and eople will not forget. ,

Let it once i be i understood' in ' theUnited States that a combination hasbeen formed here to encourage an Enp- -

iisn Bteamsiup nne anu nreaK uown auAmerican line of steamers between thisport and San Francisco', ; which- -

" offersgreat facilities for traffic, and has reduced freight to the lowest paving basis, and there will soon be an end of the

. Treaty. Tlie United States did not know, and does not know, Mr. Pearee in the.Australian mail service, lie was not

- or surety for the Pacific Mail Companyin the contract with the Colonies, and asilent partner in the enterprise Now,if his principals, the Pacific Mail Com-

charges? But whether or not, is that a- reason why the Oceanic Company shouldbe opposed by any one in Honolulu?

Let, us consider this oint for a mo-

ment. ' The Oceanic Company h:is eoneluded an arrangement with the UnionCompany of New Zealand, with the con- -

,on has the credit of doing this publicservice. . The ,case in whicli the oeea- -s'kjii arose for jointedly re-

garding the duty of the jiolice to thepublic was one of the interminable ettyopium prosecutions brought against Chi- -

Iiest !!S a lilitnl iiii.. iu ulmriut tomTt..lto supiHise, to enable respectable and j

wealthy smugglers to escape prosecution.Anyhow, although conviction was hadin the inferior Court the prosecutionfailed ujxjn evidence in the IntermediaryCourt. Judge ; Preston dismissed thecharge, and administered a merited re-

proof to thi police force, whose methodsare not at "all calculated 'to promote theends of justice, but the reverse, as thelearned Judge pointed out.

We hojH? and trust that this isthe beginning of a new order ofthings, and that Judge Preston willnot 1x5 alone in censuring whatis manifestly ' improper and irregular inpolice work. It is no excuse to say that" things have always been so," or that"this is the way' we have been accus-tomed to do it." The inefficiency of thepolice lias for long Ia-ci- i a standing re-

proach to the Kingdom ; and it has leencontinued Until it has e a standingmenace to the safety and good order ofthe community.

Justice Preston remarked upon thefac t that all the foreign police officers onthe force were in Court " watching theproceedings,"-- acurJuig to police jargon, instead of being abroad hunting out thefelonies that are of daily if not hourlyoccurrence. But there is work to bedone in this direction and no money, whiTe.thre'Ls money and loirtuiVlh'theopium business." Here is where thetrouble comes in, ''and where the Judgehit . thtii blot ; on the police system. Apoliceman's star to a foreign officer isequivalent to a handsome life annuity out-

side his pay.. And so long as the "moralfraud" of anti-opiu- legislation is toler-ated it 'will continue to be so. Penaltiesare divided with the officers ; hence thelaw offers a premium to them to neglectall other duties and apply themselves tothat which . ays lest. Charges areliable to be trumied up under such cir-cumstances, and the more active anofficer is in this direction the more likelyis he to be lought off by Chinese, whoare notorixi'.Iy; 'engaged in the. opiumtraffic, and who are always willing topay for " iolice protection." In SanFrancisco a detail to the Chinese quarteris eagerly sought for and is equivalent toa conijM.'tence for life within a twelve-month. Considering the amount ofopium smuggling in this Kingdom, andits wide ramifications, and consideringalso that police nature is the same allover the. world", one may be excused forthinking that this is the best payingbranch of police ihity here, as it cer-tainly is the only branch attended to bythe officers, 'with the remarkable co-

incidence also that only poor devils ofChinamen who have no friends are"hauled n."; ,

Now, we do not for a moment seek tomitigate the oifenso- - of the- - Chinese. They are not deserving of sympatln-- , butthat is 110 : reason why t lie police depart-ment of the Kingdom should be demoral-ized, and miscellaneous crime be fos-

tered and encouraged, as is being doneevery day. Does anyone with the slight-est experience in criminal affairs supposefor a moment, if a ioliee force of thestrength maintained by the taxpayerswere thoroughly organized, trained anddirected, that thieves would have abso-lute immunity from detection by nightor day, while a whiff of opium smoke willtitillate the olfactory nerves of the ever-vigila- nt

officers from Punahou tojolice headquarters? It would be an in-

sult to common sense to suppose so. Wedo not ltelieve it ; but we do believe thatit is impossible to have inefficient policeservice under existing conditions, and weblame the hypocritical law of moralpretense the anti-opiu- m statute forthe utter demoralization ofthe force. There is the raw material for anadmirable police force among thenative Hawaiians if properly handledand trained ; but it has had no chanceto display its merit, and can have nochance of doing so unless the entire !

business is changed.j

the P C. Anvi-iRTisEK- The touristssay :

A wise Hebrew monarch has left onrecord his opinion that in making manybooks there is 110 end, and much readingis a weariness of the flefch. If we applythis observation to the contributions of

travelers most of us will, we fancy, ledisposed to consider his warning as wellfounded. For the past hundred yearsthe Hawaiian Isles have possessed theflattering distinction of leing the mostextensively written ab ut of all the islesof the Pacific. If we are about to disre- -

ard the monarch's warning it is onlyU-eaus-e we "feel a call" to give our fel-

low colonists some slight idea 6f thescenes which are now brought withineasy access by the new facilities of

travel. In the summer of 1881 one of our party

waited over a Wit here in order to visitthe famous crater of Kilauea, but on in-

quiry found it quite impossible unless hebad six weeks at his disKsaI. Now themarvelous volcano can Ik? reached in asmany days as it formerly took weeks, and on learning this, and some kindfriends having arranged for our transferfrom the Zealandia to the Alameda, leaving the following week, we decidedto stay over.

'OPINION OF THE AI.AMEOA.

On landing we were invited on boardthe Alameda to breakfast, and it is nottoo much to say that every appointmentabout her is as clean, neat and elegantas a first-clas- s yacht. The dining saloon, social hall, state rooms and smokingroom are large and well ventilated, andcould not li surpassed for leauty andconvenience. All the latest improve-ments in the way of electric light, bells, etc., have been adopted, and the cusineand attendants seem all that could bewished for ; in fact, everything has beendone to increase the pleasures anddiminish the discomforts of travel. Over2,000 tons burthen, capable of steamingsixteen knots ier hour, she and hersister ship, the Marqosa, will find themail contract rate but a mere bagatelle. The new Australian, New Zealand andSan Francisco mail service contractedfor jointly by the Union SteamshirComnanv of New Zealand and theOceanic Company of San Francisco, wilnow run four boats. The Zealandia andAustralia will remain on the line between Sydney, Auckland and Honolulu, where freight and passengers wilbe transhimed to the connect intsteamers of the Oceanic line here, continuing the voyage to San FranciscoAt first sight this transhipment mayseem somewhat of a drawback to the service, but in reality it will Ik? an agreeable change which the Australian traveling and commercial public will soon appreciate. Judging from our own experience, there will be no delay or inconvenience in transhipping ; the steamers wil

be almost side by side at the wharf, antthe Honolulu agents, Messrs. W. G

Irwin & Co.. vtav everv attention to tincomfort of passengers.

INDI CEMENTS TO TOIHISTS.Those preferring to wait twelve days

for the following steamer will find anagreeable break in the monotony of along passage, and will have an opportunity of leisurely visiting every place oi

interest on the Islands. Chief of all, thecelebrated volcano of Kilauea, in whichare situate the burning lakes ; the mountains of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa,each towering 14,000 feet above the sea,and llaleakala, the largest extinct craterever known, over thirty miles in circumference. In and around Honolulu itselfpleasant days can be sient;; the surroundings are most charming withwealth of semi-tropic- al vegetation. Theever-celebrat- ed Pali, the watering-plac- e

of Waikiki, the cocoanut groves are allwithin easy access. The Hawaiian Hotelis ample and comfortable, surrounded byspacious and well kept grounds.

THK VOLCANO TRIP.

But tearing ourselves away from its attractions, we left Honolulu on Monday at4 p. m. by the steamer Kinau, a goodIxjat of 000 tons, with comfortable saloonand cabin accommodation, fitted withelectric lights and bells. Calling atLahaina, Maalaea and Makena on theisland of Maui, we crossed the Hawaiianchannel, arriving at Mahukona at 8 a. in.on Tuesday, this being the terminusof one of the Hawaiian narrow-gaug- e

railroads. Some time was spent in dis-

charging and taking in cargo and passen-gers, which gave us an optwrt unity of arim ashore. Leaving again, an hourbrought us to Nawaihae, which terminated the steamer's journey in this direction. A train nassing Mahukona, androunding Ujolo point, our route layalong the coast of the Kohala and llilodistricts, rich in sugar plantations, greencane, highly cultivated, being visible tor

ON THE RETURN JOURNEY.

At o :30 a.m. on Friday morning westarted on our return journey to Keau-ho- u.

Embarking again on the Kinauwe completed the circuit of Hawaii, onlylanding for a short time at Kealakekubay to pay reverence to the immortalmemory of Captain Cook. We arrivedwithout further incident at Honolulu onSaturday morning, and thus ended ourtour round Hawaii, having met withkindness and hospitality on every hand, and when we are back once more in theenjoyment of what Charles Latoib hascalled the . sweet security of streets wewill look back with fond memory on one

f the most enjoyable visits which it hasever leen our lot to make.

PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS. j

It is to be honed that some commercial- - - - - -a

benefits will arise from the improvedcommunications between Australia, theHawaiian Islands and California. Thework on the extensive sugar plantationsis done by mules, horses, and in a fewcases by steam, but the price of coal re-

mains high, varying from 3 to 4 perton. The nominal value of oats Is 4s.per bushel, so that there is a good pros-Ie- ct

of our doing a fair trade in either orboth of these important products.

Bacon is quoted at Is. 4d. jer pound, cheese of best quality about the same, while the best butter is 3s. per pound.i Beef and mutton are in ample supply,

1 ut of a very indifferent quality, especiallythe latter, so that any development ofbur foreign meat trade in this direction isunlikely. The settlers are now beginning to awake to the necessity of im- -

proving their stock, and the demand j

would increase were the high-bre- d stockof the Colonies more better and widelyknown. As time rolls on and the advan-tages of this route are better known, wefeel sure that the commercial interests ofthe great Colonics and California willtender their best thanks to the UnionSteamship Co. of New Zealand and toMessrs. Spreckels & Co. of San Francisco, for their public spirit and deter- -

mination to continue a service, without '

which a magic circle now uniting us toj

millions of our brethren would be broken.Yours, faithfully,

J . Cathcart Wasox,Corwan, New Zealand.

In the Intermediary Court yesterdaymorning the cases of "Wong Tai PoonandYim King, charged with having opiumin ios.soHsion, were heard before Mr.Justice 3'reston. They were apjtcalsfrom the Police Court, where both ap-pela-

were lined and Bentenced toa term of imprisonment. Mr. F. M.Hatch apicared for Wong Tai l'oouand Mr. Jono. Austin for YimKing. After partly hearing the evi-

dence and arguments of counsel, theCourt discharged both men. " His Honor,in summing up, condemned the systemof swearing out warrants. In the "WongTai Poon case the warrant was swornout at 4 p. m., and was not executeduntil 1:30 a. m., an interval of ninehours and a half, thereby giving plentyof time for jetty conspiracies. HisHonor said it was the Marshal's duty toexecute a warrant at once. He con-

demned the system of dividing penaltiesamong the police officers, and severelyrebuked the police for the carelessnessof their present system of dealing inwarrants. His Honor also remarked onthe presence in Court of nearly all theforeign police officers on the force, andsuggested it might be advisable for themto show as much energy in huntingdown felonies, which are happeningevery day in our midst, as they havedone in hunting petty opium cases.
