What’s New in the Louisville Office?

PARS Project Manager, Tom Dobinson, has participated in the Polar Bear Plunge for the Special Olympics New Jersey for the past 5 years. The last plunge took place on February 25, 2012 in Seaside Heights, NJ. Over 6,000 people jumped into the ocean and raised over 1.4 million. Funds raised through the Polar Bear Plunge help to advance the goal of Special Olympics New Jersey, to provide free year-round training and competition in 24 Olympic-type sports to more than 22,000 children and adults with intellectual disabili-ties. Thanks to Tom for participating in this great cause and braving the frigid cold ocean year after year!

The Kentucky Derby is a time honored tradition, not only for the people of Kentucky, but for the thousands of people who travel to the Louisville area to attend this annual event. The new Louisville location offered PARS the opportunity to not only sponsor, but participate in, the Derby Festival – two weeks of events leading up to the annual Run for the Roses, also known as the Kentucky Derby.

Thunder Over Louisville was held April 21st to kick off the Derby Festival. This event is the largest annual fireworks show in North America, at-tracting around 500,000 specta-tors that line the Kentucky and Indiana shorelines of the Ohio River. The day began with an

air show, featuring over 60 civilian and military airplanes con-tinuously flying over the Ohio River from early afternoon until right before the fireworks began. PARS had Kiran Gill, Harch

Gill, Debbie Wesslund, and Tiffany Horning in attendance at the VIP event for festival sponsors. The following Saturday, April 28th, was the day of the Derby Festival Marathon and Mini Marathon, one of the largest road races in the nation. This year 18,000 runners registered for the race, marking the largest number of registrants in the race’s 10 year history. Among those registered was PARS’ very own Tiffany Horning, Office Administrator (pictured right, far right) for the Louisville loca-tion. Tiffany ran 13.1 miles starting in downtown Louisville, heading south to Churchill Downs where the Kentucky Derby takes place, and back to the finish in Downtown Louisville.

We are pleased to welcome the following new employees to the firm and wish everyone a successful career with PARS.

Jeff Blair, Environmental Field Inspector A.S. Petroleum Technology & B.S. Geology, University of Pittsburgh Jeff Blair began work in January 2012 upon PARS being awarded the contract for the EPA Region II UIC/UST Inspec-tion Support. Mr. Blair has been providing technical support for EPA Region II UIC program for more than twenty years, initially conducting 100% oil & gas inspection activity reports. This Class II field work entailed witnessing hundreds of me-chanical integrity tests, and plugging & abandonment of injec-tion wells, as well as performing numerous routine inspections of active and inactive oil fields, as well as mechanical integrity testing/routine inspections of Class III (solution mining) facili-ties.

Firoz Jan, Industrial Hygienist B.S. Environmental Science State University of Pennsylvania Firoz Jan began work with PARS in April 2012. Mr. Jan has 7 years of experience in environmental consulting. He has man-aged hundreds of projects involving industrial hygiene related services in various industry settings, pre-renovation and pre-demolition asbestos, lead, mold and other hazardous material services to manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceutical and com-mercial clients in the MidAtlantic Region. Mr. Jan has several different asbestos and lead certifications and he is a Certified Microbial Consultant (CMC).

Amanda Drewicz, Staff Geologist M.S. & B.S., Geology Temple University Amanda Drewicz began work with PARS in May 2012. Ms. Drewicz is a recent graduate with experience as a Teaching Assistant and an Undergraduate Researcher for the Depart-ment of Earth and Environmental Science at Temple Univer-sity. Her Master’s Thesis was on Quantifying periods of diffu-sion (fossilization) in marine and nonmarine setting using rare earth elements.

Safety is important whether it be on or off the job. Below are a few common household safety tips to help keep you and your family safe.

Maintain your clothes dryer—if the lint filter, including the exhaust line is not cleaned regularly/periodically lint will build up, causing a lowering of drying efficiency and raising the internal temperature of the dryer. When lint comes into contact with the heating element of the dryer you have an ignition which can set the contents of the dryer on fire and even the house.

Keep a box of baking soda near the stove /oven for grease fires.

Keep a fire extinguisher in your house / apartment and make sure you know how to use it! Remember to inspect it periodi-cally and make sure it is charged.

Please remember driving is the most dangerous thing we do. 40,000 people die in traffic accidents annually and more than 350,000 are seriously/permanently injured.

What’s the bottom line for us? Your most important pay check is the next one; be safe and collect it.

Taking a Plunge for a Good Cause

In January 2012 PARS was awarded a new 5 year con-tract with the EPA Region II for Underground Injec-tion Control and Underground Storage Tank Inspec-tion Support Services. This project is being managed by Connie Tsentas, Senior Associate and supported by Jeff Blair, Field Inspector (see left for more on Jeff).

Another accomplishment came in late March when PARS was awarded a Single Award Task Order Con-tract with a new client the USACE, Huntington Dis-trict.

In addition, PARS was also awarded second contract in late March which was a Multiple Award Eviron-mental Services Contract with the USACE, Baltimore District.

PARS is very pleased to have these new opportunities and looks forward to building lasting relationships with our new and current clients.

PARS Awarded New Contracts in 2012

PARS Supports Local Little League Team

For the second year in a row PARS has sponsored a little league team through a community baseball or-ganization, the Hamilton Little Lads. Team PARS En-vironmental consists of boys ages 7-8. PARS Project Coordinator, Jessica Perrini, stays actively involved in the baseball organization as her two sons play in the league.

The team finished last season by making it to the playoffs. Below is a photo of the team from their 2011 Season. The team plays a total of 15 games per sea-son, and they are off to a great start so far this year. Good Luck to the PARS Environmental Little League in their 2012 season!

Through its Louisville office, PARS has become a sustaining member of the Kentuckiana Post of S.A.M.E., and serves on the Board of Directors. Debbie Wesslund is co-chair of the Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security Committee and she and Tiffany Horning have been assisting the committee with developing an emergency response procedure for the region. Tiffany assisted the committee in coordinating its recent FEMA 154 and ATC 20 Workshops. PARS was one of six sponsors of this event. The S.A.M.E. connection has provided a forum to become more familiar with the Louisville region, identify project opportunities and meet potential partners. Furthermore, many of our clients at USACE participate in S.A.M.E., and through the organization activities, we are expanding our network. Harch will be making a presentation to S.A.M.E. on Waste to Energy technology at its monthly luncheon in January 2013. If you want to know more about this Post, go to http://posts.same.org/kentuckiana/.

If you are wondering what “Kentuckiana” is, it is a combination of Kentucky and Indiana and is a description used when de-scribing the bi-state metro area. As you may know, Louisville sits on the Ohio River which divides the states.
