Spring/Summer • April/August 2011

05.10.2011 YOM HA’ATZMAUT / ISRAEL@63Mel Lastman Square (Yonge North of Sheppard)

Dear friends of the Prosserman JCC

Shalom and welcome to the Spring/Summer edition of our program guide.

2011 got off to a tremendous start with wonderful additions to our program

repertoire. It began with the creation of an outdoor ice rink, a culinary

tour of Israel, a new free shuttle service for seniors, an action packed Tu-

B’Shvat and an amazing Family Day. The plan is to keep the momentum

going with many new and exciting programs, workshops, classes and

events for members of all ages.

As we step into spring, we recognize the importance of continuing with

our market research as our members are a vital piece of our future and

growth. We appreciate the feedback that we have received to date, and

while there will be more formal opportunities, please consider this your

invitation to continue to express your own vision of the Prosserman JCC.

Our doors are always open.

As a JCC professional for over 10 years, I am intimately familiar with

the impact that a Jewish Community Centre can have on the lives of its

members. As the new Executive Director, I am honoured to be at the

helm of the Prosserman JCC as we lead the way to a vibrant future in

Toronto - A future that supports Jewish culture, community, and educa-

tion while encouraging and enabling Jews of all ages and backgrounds to

engage in the joys of Jewish living.

We believe that this is your home away from home and it’s a delight to

keep seeing the familiar faces as well as meeting the new ones. I invite you

to browse through this guide and I look forward to seeing you around the

Prosserman JCC.

B’Shalom

Learn how to Keyboard the ABCway with Cindy Sachar!Cindy Sachar has been teaching keyboarding

and computer proficiency for over 16 years. She

has designed curricula for students ages 5 and

up. Her experience ranges from children to

corporations, executives and city of Toronto

employees. Cindy has developed and taught

continuing education courses for teachers in

Toronto and internationally to implement com-

puters in the classroom.

She works with students to help them become

proficient in the use of the computer, to enhance

their assignments, to support their school work

and to extend their computer expertise. She

has run after school programs focusing on

keyboar-ding skills and computer mastery.

Teachers recommend her one-on-one services

for students who have trouble with their pen-

manship and would benefit from keyboarding

proficiently. Cindy is an easy going teacher, who

is comfortable teaching people of all ages and

levels of computer proficiency. She always

makes the lessons fun.

Why is keyboarding important? When students develop keyboarding proficiency,

it becomes an aid to the improvement of their

writing skills. It is recommended that all students

begin to learn correct placement of fingers on

the keyboard as soon as they begin to use the

computer. Although students are exposed to

some keyboarding instruction at school, the

practice time required to learn this skill is not

always available. Schools teach the home row

technique, which is not intuitive. Teachers often

rely on online keyboarding programs which do

not reinforce proper finger placement. Students

need an intuitive, customized program, with a

qualified, involved teacher who makes the les-

sons fun. This is accomplished keyboarding the

ABC way. The students learn quickly and are

thrilled to implement their skills immediately into

their school work.

DAYCARE & PRESCHOOL

Spring/Summer • April/August 2011

At the Prosserman JCC Daycare and Preschool,

all children are raised in a Jewish atmosphere,

encompassing all the essential building blocks

and values so important to living a happy,

healthy and successful Jewish life.

Our new facility is more than a bright, open

space in which children learn, play and interact

with each other, the new daycare and preschool

enhances each child’s individual learning

experience.

Perhaps most importantly, Prosserman JCC

Daycare and Preschool recognizes that these

early years of a child’s life are not only vital to

him or her, but to the entire family, as well.

Our experienced staff is always happy to

communicate with parents, and handles their

questions and concerns with sensitivity,

compassion and respect.

When parents enroll their children in the

Prosserman JCC Daycare and Preschool, they

too become part of our warm, supportive and

welcoming community that continues well after

your child’s gone home for the day.

The staff know that you’re entrusting them with

your most important possession – your child.

And, like in any good, Jewish home, your chil-

dren will always be treated like one of our own.

10-piece puzzle, re-tell simple stories and recognize

the first letter of their name.

WOMEN IN MUSIC IN THE WESTERN WORLD:

FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO TODAY

Women's music-making has always been a profound

part of human life, from the singing of lullabies to

infants to the ritual keening for the dead. Yet women

have been severely restricted as professional

musicians in most societies. This course will introduce

and celebrate some of the inspiring women who

nevertheless flourished within the “classical” music

tradition: composers, virtuosi and in some cases

passionate activists, from the 12th-centuryvisionary

Hildegard of Bingen to Toronto composer Ann

Southam (1937-2010). Each class will include listening,

and the lecturer will provide insights into musical

language of each era under discussion.

FILM MUSIC: THE NEGLECTED ART

One of the most misunderstood and least

appreciated aspects of moviemaking is the film

score. Even though music has been an integral part

of movies since the silent era, many believe that the

best film score is the kind that you don’t notice. In

this course, instructor Kevin Courrier addresses

that perception by tracing the long and fascinating

history of movie music, while also examining the

works of many of the art form’s great and varied

composers. From the piano player in the theatre pit

to the European exiles who created the golden

years of Hollywood, the course will explore the

relevance of movie music and whether or not a

good score can save a bad picture (or whether a

bad score can ruin a good one). The class will also

examine the impact of pop music on films and the

renaissance of orchestral music in the late 70s with

“Star Wars”. Including film clips that illustrate how

the film score works, this course bring to students

an added awareness of the strong impact music can

have on movies.

FORBIDDEN DESIRES: THE FILMS OF ALFRED

HITCHCOCK AND BRIAN DE PALMA

Voyeurism has always been an integral part of the

appeal of motion pictures. But what film directors

Alfred Hitchcock and Brian De Palma did in their

work was to make it an acceptable dramatic

strategy. In the thrillers of Alfred Hitchcock (The 39

Steps, Strangers on a Train, Vertigo, Psycho), he

was able to manipulate our responses by pulling

the rug out from under our expectations of

conventional drama. Brian De Palma (Carrie,

Dressed to Kill, Blow Out) later borrowed

Hitchcock's cinematic language to take us deeper

and further into more contemporary issues of

sexual fear and political unrest. This course

examines how both directors, with cunning intent,

force us, the viewing audience, to face our hidden

fascination with our own perverse fantasies, our

own forbidden desires.

ROADS TO PERDITION:

THE DARK ALLURE OF FILM NOIR

For over 70 years, moviegoers havebeen drawn to

the ambiguous and cynical world of film noir. In

this lecture series, critic and author Kevin Courrier

examines the reasons for the genre's longevity.

Derived from hardboiled crime fiction (The Postman

Always Rings Twice, Double Indemnity) in the years

following World War II, film noir has its roots in

German expressionist films of the early 20th

Century. Courrier will trace these origins, delve into

classic noirs (The Big Sleep, Detour and Strangers

on a Train) and show how this cinematic tradition

continues in contemporary works, such as L.A.

Confidential, Mulholland Drive, and The Big

Lebowski.

THE ENIGMATIC GENIUS OF ROBERT ALTMAN

Although film director Robert Altman worked in

Hollywood for most of his career, he didn't make

typical Hollywood movies; even his non-Hollywood,

low budget productions (Secret Honour) differed

from conventional independent fare. Because his

films transcended their genre, they rarely became

hits. Despite this, Robert Altman was one of

the most prolific and idiosyncratic of American

directors.

Film critic Kevin Courrier will examine how Altman

redefined the genre picture in the war film

(M*A*S*H*), the western (McCabe and Mrs. Miller),

the detective story (The Long Goodbye), the

musical (Nashville), murder mystery (Gosford Park),

and theatre (Come Back to the Five and Dime,

Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean). We will also examine

how his movies worked between the lines of con-

ventional story-telling to give us compelling and

elliptical dream worlds, revealing the struggles of

the independent artist continually in conflict with the

world of commerce.

“SOMEONE TO RUN WITH” BY DAVID GROSSMAN

(2004) / REVIEWED BY ANNA SHTERNSHIS

Author of six novels and three works of nonfiction,

Grossman is one of Israel’s finest and most

provocative writers. “Someone to Run With” is set

during the waning days of the Oslo era, shortly

before Grossman’s hopes for peace were dashed by

the outbreak of the second intifada. The story fol-

lows Israeli teenagers Assaf and Tamar, and Dinka,

a golden Labrador that eventually brings them to-

gether.
