GREAT THINGS HAPPEN HEREMarie Stovicek | 613–722–5157 | [email protected] BEGNINNINGS

Early Beginnings Multicultural Child Development Centre supports the belief that young children learn through action and that a good environment for learning should exercise and challenge the development of each child. As teachers of Early Childhood Education, we view our role as supporters of child development. It is our intention to provide an environment wherein each child is encouraged to express him/herself at his or her personal best. Our program considers the total growth of a child–social, emotional, physical and intellectual.

TODDLERS: 18 TO 30 MONTHSToddlers are typically just starting to build their foundation for learning, and we strive to make them feel comfortable, safe, happy and loved in our program. Our theme–based programs let your toddler experiment with different materials, get actively involved with music, storytelling, and puppets and enjoy his/her first experiences with arts and crafts. Staffing Ratio: 1:5

PRESCHOOLERS: 30 MONTHS TO 5 YEARSOur daily program emphasizes that children learn through active involvement with different material, events and people. Jewish holidays and traditions, music lessons, computer–based activities and field trips are incorporated into the program along with a variety of themes and activities. The program integrates various cultures to accommodate children of different cultural backgrounds. Staffing Ratio: 1:8

OTTAWA JEWISH FILM SOCIETY Sponsored by the Greenberg Families Library in partnership with AJA 50+ Free for all Soloway JCC, Library and AJA 50+ members. $3 fee for refreshments at the door • All movies start at 1:00 pm

Four Seasons Lodge Wednesday, April 13 A haunting documentary about a group of aging Holocaust victims who gather each summer in an idyllic hideaway in the Catskill Mountains. The film examines what may be the final season for this remarkable group of survivors who though haunted by the past have found a passion for living in dancing, laughter and late-night revelry that reflects their love of life. English (97min.)

Tijuana Jews Monday, May 16 Escaping persecution in Europe in the early 20th century many Jews sought shelter in Mexico. This documentary focuses on a small group of refugees who migrated north and settled in the border town of Tijuana with its questionable reputation for cheap narcotics and free flowing liquor. The film is an exploration of growing up in this community as it blended Mexican and Jewish culture and customs. English and Spanish with English subtitles. (52 min)

Wo Ai Ni Mommy [I love you mommy] Wednesday, June 22 This heart wrenching film records the challenges faced by an eight year old Chinese adoptee as she struggles to adapt to life in America. Orphaned at two, and recently taken in by a loving Chinese foster family, her adoption by the Sadowsky family has uprooted her and painfully thrust her into a totally foreign environment. English (75min.)

Ringl and Pit Tuesday, July 12A fascinating documentary about two Jewish women, Grete Stern and Ellen Auerbach, pioneering photographers, who opened an advertising studio in Berlin in 1929. After the Nazis came to power, Ellen fled to New York and Grete to Buenos Aires. The two women reflect on their lives, their lifelong friendship and their impact on photography. English. (59 min.)

No 4 Street of Our Lady Tuesday, August 16 The remarkable story of Francisca Halamajowa, a Polish-Catholic woman, who rescued 15 of her Jewish neighbors by cleverly passing herself off as a Nazi sympathizer. For two years she cooked and cared for them as they hid in her pigsty and in a hole under her kitchen floor. The film draws on the diary of one of the survivors as well as testimony from her neighbors and her descendants. English. (90 min.)

SALT WATER POOLThe Levitank pool is a 4 lane, 25m Main Pool with a beach-like ramp, therapeutic hot tub, shallow baby pool, slide, and patio lounge.

The pool office handles first aid and emergency response for the entire SJCC, and features a small Aquatic Pro Shop with discount prices on goggles, caps, and other items commonly required by our swimmers.

In order to help us keep our pool clean, please remember to shower with soap and water before entering the pool.

GENERAL POOL & HOT TUB SCHEDULEThe pool is open from the time the building opens to one 1/2 hour before the building closes (some exceptions). Swimmers will find one lap lane open at all times except during group lessons and major swim team practices.

Our hot tub is also open from the time the building opens to half an hour before closing, except during restricted gender swims (where access is granted to men or women only).

NEW ADMISSION STANDARDS FOR CHILDREN• New standards have been issued by the Office of

the Chief Coroner to assist lifeguards in maintaining adequate surveillance over the whereabouts and the activities of young bathers while they are inside the pool enclosure.

• Children ages 8 to 10 are required to pass a swim test in order to swim unsupervised. Children who do not complete the test are required to be directly supervised by a parent or guardian (16+) who is present in the water within arms reach at all times.

• Children under the age of 8 may not be admitted to the swimming pool unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian (16+) who is in the water within arms reach of the child, with a maximum of two children for each parent or guardian

CHILDREN/YOUTH PROGRAMS

Lifesaving Society’s Pre–School Program

Parent and Tot 1 (3–12 months) Parent and Tot 2 (12–24 months) Parent and Tot 3 (22–36 months) This exciting program structures in-water interaction between parent and child to stress the importance of play in developing water-positive attitudes and skills. Activities are planned based on the child’s maturity so parents register in the level appropriate for their child’s age.

Preschool A(3–5 yrs) 1:3 We’ll help these little swimmers jump into the water, and learn to float, glide and kick with assistance. They’ll learn the importance of staying “within arms reach” and become comfortable putting their faces in and blowing bubbles.

Preschool B(3–5 yrs) 1:3 These little swimmers will jump in on their own and learn to float, glide and kick with an aid. They’ll learn to put on a lifejacket/Personal Floatation Device and learn to move safely through the water on their front and back.

Preschool C(3–5 yrs) 1:3 These little swimmers will jump into chest-deep water, learn to float, glide and kick on their own and retrieve an object from the bottom. They’ll gain exposure to deep water and learn the basics of rhythmic breathing.

Preschool D(3–5 yrs) 1:5 These kids are becoming quite the swimmers! They’ll jump into deep water, kick on their front and back, tread water and learn basic front and back crawl. They’ll learn the importance of swimming with a buddy and wearing a PFD/lifejacket.

Preschool E(3–5 yrs) 1:5 These advanced preschoolers will learn how to react if they fall unexpectedly into deep water. They’ll develop breath control, master short swims using front and back crawl, and begin developing whip kick.

Neil Mason | 613–798–9818 x377 | [email protected]

In an effort to keep our pool safe and properly maintained we must periodically close the pool for minor repairs. We will do our best to notify our members in advance, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

SWIMMER LEVELS Our Swimmer program makes sure children learn how to swim before they get in too deep. Swimmer progressions accommodate 5 to 12 year-olds including absolute beginners as well as swimmers who want to build on the basics. We stress lots of in-water practice to develop solid swimming strokes and skills. We incorporate Water Smart® education in all levels.
