Let the Summer Games Begin!

Spring 2010 www.campallen.org

To the 1600 campers, a one week experience at Camp Allen is full of activities, games, new friends, and fun. From the moment a camper wakes up and joins their friends in the dining hall, there is energy and anticipation of the day that awaits them. The camper will spend their day swimming, riding horses, making arts and crafts, going to archery, blobbing, and attending the outdoor dance.

Months before the campers arrive, Camp Allen is recruiting nurses, training staff, and purchasing materials. Drew Day, Summer Camp Director, begins right after camp ends in August, preparing for the coming summer. He will select the leadership team, followed by senior staffers, counsel-ors and volunteers. Over 300 people will be involved in this process with participation from churches all over the Diocese of Texas. Drew commented, “We have a record number of applicants for summer camp positions and the selection process, background checks and interviews require weeks of input and decisions.”

The St. Luke’s Healthcare Hospital Board having lunch in the Tellepsen Dining RoomWe are very proud of the new Tellepsen Dining Room and the improve-ments in our overall facility. The Blazing Trails Campaign has taken us on an exciting journey as we have worked to raise $2.3 million for building improvements and a maintenance endowment for Camp Allen. It has been a distinct joy to hear from people all over the world about the impact and fond memories that have come from this wonderful place. These comments have caused us to add “Stepping Stones” as another facet of the campaign, which adds a new walkway for donors to remember and honor special people in their lives.

Blazing Trails has allowed us to look back at the fond memories and to look forward with hope. We have almost reached the $1.8 million mark in the campaign and we believe there is an incredible opportunity before us. The Mabee Foundation has issued a challenge grant of $250,000 that would complete our campaign if we can raise another $250,000 by June 2010. So, we ask everyone to please consider being part of Blazing Trails and the final phase of this campaign by sending a donation in honor of a loved one. For more information, please contact Lauren Day or go online at www.campallen.org.

Summer Camp Director, Drew Day, and his wife Lauren Day, Marketing and Development Coordina-tor, have been visiting several Episcopal churches over the last 16 months. Drew stated, “Our goal has been to find campers, counselors, and adult volunteers who may not have heard about the ministry opportunities the Summer Camp program has to offer. We believe that God uses these piney woods to change lives and nurture children into men and women who are passionate about loving Christ. So the idea of introducing a child to that opportunity is a wonderful privilege for us.”

Francita Ulmer, great great granddaughter of Rosa Al-len has recently made one of her frequent visits to Camp Allen. Francita has great interest in gardening and com-mented on our new landscaping design by Laura Castle. Francita wrote the following to me:

Camp Allen is going green. It’s that time of year. In the forests the trees are sprouting their first new growth of the season. It’s spring. It’s primavera. It’s the Easter season.

Since everyone can’t be a hiker, now all can enjoy the woods with views from small seating areas that have com-fortable rocking chairs. These little oasis are surrounded by small rock gardens where colorful bedding plants have been placed. The pansies have survived the winter. They have now been joined by recently planted African Iris and Sweet Olives. These will later be changed for others more suited to summer weather.

The tulips at the entrance to the Main Building, Gregg Complex, are blooming now. They won’t last long. Come and see. It’s beautiful!

The new gardens and seating areas offer a wonderful place to sit and relax, start your day, or

Awaken Your Spirit.

Summer Camp Sneak Preview May 29th, 2010

Camp Allen Review Page 11

Join us on May 29th for our annual Summer Camp Sneak Preview. This is a great introduction to our camping program for first time campers or campers new to Camp Allen.

Campers and their parents or chaperone will tour the property, dormitory campsites, have lunch, and meet some of the senior camp staff. In addition, parents will have the opportunity to visit with a camp nurse and have a Q&A session with Drew Day, Summer Camp Director. The Sneak Preview is perfect if you are not sure if your child is ready for camp or if you would just like to see first hand how the program works. Children will gain a better understanding of what a typical day in the life of a camper will entail, and they will leave counting the days until their session begins!

Contact Suzi @ 936-825-7175 or [email protected] to register.

A day in the life of a camper is filled with activities, creativity, and faith enrichment.
