Executive Director’s Letter May, 2010

W e have been enjoying a very busy spring with several activities taking place, from our third Annual Strike Out MS bowl-a-thon, to our MS Every Step Matters walks held in Burlington, Oakville and Milton/Halton Hills, and to end it all, our Volunteer Reception. We are fortunate to have so many volunteers who lend their precious time to us, which makes such a differ-ence. Our volunteer theme this year is, “Volunteers Plant the Seeds of Kind-ness”. It couldn’t be more true! Thank you to all of you who have worked so hard on committees, bingo sessions and other events. Every effort you make to assist us allows us to serve more people. Thank you!

Important Note From Bolthouse

Farms Green Goodness

Michelle,

Thank you for your interest in Bolthouse Farms prod-ucts. The MS warning on the label (for Green Goodness) is a requirement in Canada because the product is fortified with Echinacea. If you have questions re-garding this product, we would suggest discussing it with your doctor. Thank you for your support. We appreciate your business. If we may be of further assistance, please write or call our Customer Service line at 800-467-4683. Sincerely, Julie Soley Consumer Relations Bolthouse Farms E-Mail: [email protected]

Last Print Issue of Halton Updater!

As you may have heard, this is the last printed issue of the Halton Updater. As with so many organizations that are going green, we will be switching to an electronic edition in the fall, which will be e-mailed to all of you. Please, if you haven’t already done so, give us your e-mail address by phoning the office at 905-681-8770. Advantages of the new format will be COLOUR! As well, you will receive your copy as soon as it’s released, rather than days later. And you will be able to e-mail it to and share it with others. We hope you’ll enjoy the new e-edition in the fall.

June Clarke Scholarship June Clarke was a long standing volunteer with the MS Soci-ety of Canada, Halton Chapter. In her professional life she had a deep appreciation for youth who volunteered their time in their community. A scholarship fund had been set up in June’s name to honour youth who are active volunteers . We are happy to announce this year’s recipient, Katie Lawson, student at Robert Bateman High School. Upon presentation of her award at our Volunteer Reception, Katie said, "As the recipient of the June Clarke Memorial Scholarship Award for 2010, I would like to express my sin-cere appreciation to the Board of Directors at the Halton Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, as it will assist me in my future endeavours at the University of Ottawa, this com-ing fall. It has been my pleasure to be a volunteer for the So-ciety."

Boston Fish and Chips

A special thank you to Jennifer Soukup owner of Boston Fish and Chips on Guelph Line in Burlington. Jennifer held a special Mother’s Day dinner at her restaurant and donated $2.00 per fish and chip dinner to our MS Society of Canada, Halton Chapter.

Burlington Raising the MS Awareness Flag

A special thank you to Burlington Mayor Jackson for kicking off our MS May Awareness Month and raising our flag in Civic Square at City Hall. And thank you to Burlington Hydro for selecting us as the recipients of a charity BBQ.

MS Gumpers Win 2nd Place at the Grate Groan Up Spelling Bee for North Halton Literacy Foundation

The Halton Chapter participated in the Grate Groan Up Spelling Bee in Milton. A big “thank you” to Heather Mattocks and Joan Tomblin for spelling with me. Second place is not a bad finish at all! Thank you, also, to our cheerleaders who dressed the part of characters from the movie, Forrest Gump. I am happy to report we won the Most Spirited Team Award!

Third Annual

“Sureflow” Team

“Nurse Next Door” Team

“Beer Delivery Guy” Team

The Halton Chapter held its 3rd annual Strike Out MS Bowl-a-thon at the Burlington Bowl in February. We had a Happy Days theme and participants certainly dressed the part! It was a wonderful day, in large part due to a great team who organized a fun event. A big 'thank you' to our lane sponsors and prize donors! Your contributions made our event especially fun. We want to extend a big 'thank you' to SureFlow Equipment for donat-ing the grand prize, a stainless steel barbecue. We hope to see you all again next year at our 4th annual Strike Out MS Bowl A Thon (date to be announced).

2010 Burlington MS Walk Rocked!

Our 16th Walk at Robert Bateman High School once again proved that you can’t keep us down! We had some great entertainment, including DanceIT, Sidekicks School of Martial Arts, and The Footnotes. Our terrific DJ, Dr. Mu-sic, local MP, Mike Wallace, and Sunni Genesco, of K-Lite FM, kept the fun going. And everyone enjoyed listening to the band, Acoustically Yours.

Thanks to our many sponsors whose generous donations and prizes provided an extra incentive to the walkers. We’re especially grateful to Bombay Grill (samosas to die for), Wilson-Blanchard Property Management ($550 to-wards the purchase of a kilometre and food), Duncan & Wright Photographers, Trillium College, and AV Solutions (provided a large screen TV, as well as a spectacular prize for the highest individual fundraiser, Jenny Kyle). Heather’s Hope was top team.

Special thanks to the Burlington Organizing Committee, Barb, Carole, Carolynn, Chad, Heather, Jenn, John, Ja-son, Jeremy, Katie and Norm, and our amazing volunteers who come out year after year.

Last but not least, thank you to our wonderful walkers who, together with kids and dogs, make it all worthwhile. Every step DOES matter!

Joan Tomblin, Chair, Burlington Organizing Committee

2010 MS Walk—Oakville a Huge Success This year’s MS Walk in Oakville was a great success. The numbers speak volumes with $186,600 being raised. The Walk Committee did a great job. They were Vice President – Road Master – Craig Earle, Commander of Volunteer Troops - Nadine Singh and Aanchal Gogna, Cuisine Master - Jennifer DaFonte, VP Teams - Jessica Bryant-Earle, Registration Marshall - Dawn Freeman, and MS Liaison - Laura Franklin. Thanks to everyone. Your energy, creative ideas, and en-thusiasm make finding a cure for MS that much closer. For walk pictures, find us on Facebook. Search ‘Oakville MS Walk’. Milton-Halton Hills Walk 2010 The Milton– Halton Hills Walk celebrated its 12th year and it was a huge success. Joan Gallagher-Bell Receives Award On May 20, 2010 the City of Burlington recognized several citizens who make a contribution to the Burlington Community. Our very own Joan Gallagher-Bell was presented with the Sen-ior-Person-of-the-Year Award.

For more than 20 years, Joan has been an advocate for people living with disabilities. By shar-ing her personal experience and community knowledge with various committees and reports, Joan is making Ontario an accessible place for all.

Congratulations, Joan!
