First Week of School Information

School Information• School Hours

– 7:45am-2:45pm (Students may enter the building beginning at 7:15am.)

• Breakfast is provided beginning at 7:15am. This is a free service to all students.

• Families will receive information in the mail approximately two weeks before the beginning of school about:– Open House Date and Time – School Supply List (can also be found on HRES website)

Kindergarten Staggered EntryEach child will be assigned to come ONE of the following days:

– Monday, August 17th – Tuesday, August 18th

– Wednesday, August 19th– Thursday, August 20th

Friday, August 21st - No students will come for Staggered Entry this day, but we will host an Open House from 1-2 pm for both parents and students to meet their teacher and

drop off school supplies...

• Per CMS decision, ALL CMS students will do virtual learning the week of August 24th-28th.

• All K students will come to school on Monday, August 31st to begin a regular school schedule following the CMS calendar.

•We have a separate entrance for Kinders during Staggered Entry (to the left when facing main entrance)•Parents are welcome to escort Kinders on their staggered entry day to the sign in table, and to the Kinder Open House on Friday, August 21st. •Students will walk to class independently beginning on Monday, 8/31 (beyond the front lobby).•We will have ‘hawk signs’ marking the way where students should turn to get to the kindergarten hallway, as well as staff and student monitors and helpers.

Bus Transportation• Bus transportation is provided for all registered students.

• Bus stops are assigned by the transportation department.

• You will be notified of your child’s bus stop when you receive your back to school packet in August. A name tag indicating your child’s bus number and bus stop will be provided for you.

• Kindergarten students are typically assigned to the front seats for safety reasons. Upon request, siblings can be seated together.

• Students are greeted & dismissed from buses by a staff member each morning and afternoon.

• Kindergarten students are closely monitored as they transition to and from the bus lot.

Carpool

• The carpool line begins at 7:15 a.m.

• Staff members monitor the carpool line.

• Each family that utilizes car transportation receives a carpool number for PM pickup. This number can be picked up at our Open House in August.

• Students are dismissed at 2:45 p.m. for carpool and should be picked up by 3:00 p.m.

Visiting the SchoolSchool Sign-In Procedures

• Anytime an adult visits the school, they must sign into Lobby Guard using a current Photo ID.

• School sign-in procedures ensure the safety of all students and staff.

Walking Students to Class

• A family member is allowed to escort a student to the sign-in table during Staggered Entry week and to their assigned classroom the day of Open House, but students must walk themselves to class beginning the first day of school. This includes walking themselves to breakfast.

• Staff is positioned throughout the school to monitor students.

Visiting the Classroom

• Anytime you wish to visit the classroom, you must schedule a meeting with the teacher in advance.

School Communication

• Each child will have an Agenda that will go between home and school every day.

• A ‘Tuesday Folder’ comes home each week with important information about school events, as well as finished student work.

• Other school communication includes: Weekly ConnectEd email, a weekly Kindergarten newsletter, & Principal phone blasts

Immunization• All children attending school in North Carolina must

provide proof of up to date immunizations. Immunization record must be brought to school when child is enrolled.

• A Kindergarten physical is also required and must be signed by a medical provider. The physical must be no more than 12 months prior to the date of school entry.

• North Carolina law requires all principals to exclude children from school who have not completed this series within 30 days of enrollment.

Medication at School

If medications are needed at school:

• A medication authorization form must be filled out by the doctor and parent. This requirement includes all over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol, cough syrups, and ointments.

• The parent is to provide medications and refills. All medications must be in their original containers.

• Available at your doctor’s office or clinic and at both Health Department Locations.

• Call 704-336-6500 for Health Department appointment.

Chronic IllnessIf your child requires medications or procedures at school, please notify the school nurse or staff now so planning can begin now.

Examples: Diabetes, Asthma, Severe Allergies, Seizures, or Dietary restrictions.

Illness at School● Schools are limited in their ability to care for your sick child.● Children will need to go home if sick at school (vomiting,

fever, injuries and infections.) ● Please provide emergency phone numbers to school and

update as numbers change. (Blue Card)

After School Enrichment Program

Hawk Ridge hosts an after-school program that runs continuously from dismissal until (up to) 6:00pm.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools After School Enrichment Program (ASEP) → Information for Beginner’s Day

The After School Enrichment Program provides a warm, caring environment beyond school hours where students:● play with school friends and get their homework done

● participate in exciting activities, including sports, art, computer exploration, and more!● spend out-of-school hours in safe and stimulating environments

ASEP Site Coordinators work closely with school staff to ensure that programs supplement the learning taking place during the school day. Program leaders are respectful and positive toward children, mindful of the importance to

children of appropriate role models. Staff is trained in a conflict resolution curriculum for adults & children. ASEP sites are licensed by the N.C. Division of Child Development, so families may use subsidies from Child Care Resources, Inc.

HOURS OF OPERATION: After school operates from school dismissal, 2:45 pm until 6:00 p.m. ASEP is open on teacher workdays, from 6:45 am until 6 pm, at no additional charge.

DATES OF OPERATION: Before and After School care begins on the first day of school and operates on all regular school days & teacher workdays/early release that fall within regular weeks of school. ASEP does not operate on

school system holidays. ASEP FEES AND REGISTRATION: Registration Fee: $47 family registration

$72 week → Hawk Ridge is an After School only program

ASEP offers online registration only. Registration for fall term is to be determined due to central office staff working remotely. It will be on a space-available, first come, first served basis. Online registration will be available at

www.cms.k12.nc.us, Log onto the web site, click on Departments, then After School Enrichment Program. You may contact us by email at [email protected] or call the After School Enrichment Program central office at

980-343-5567.

A Day in Kindergarten7:15 - 8:00 Arrival and Morning Meeting

Whether you arrive by car, bus or your two feet, there will be a staff member there to greet your child and get them to the right place. We prefer your child to be in the room between 7:25 and 7:30 so they have time to unpack and socialize with friends before 7:45 when learning time begins.

A Day in KindergartenLiteracy

Typically, we have a 3 hour literacy block broken up throughout the day. This incorporates whole group, skills practice where students work independently, one on one with a teacher, or in small groups on needed skills, and lab time which is all hands on exploring and learning.

A Day in KindergartenLunch

Students have 25 minutes to eat their lunch. Allow your child to start opening and closing containers, bags, and lunch boxes. Provide your child with all necessary items they will need like utensils and a napkin, This will help ensure they get enough time to eat their lunch. If your child prefers to buy lunch, a staff member will be there to help them learn this routine. We prefer you set up an online account with PayPams so your child does not have to worry about a money exchange.
