Overcrowding Effects on Animals• Animal begin fighting.• Animals become overstressed.• Animals become more prone to diseases.
ex: Kennel Cough• Innocent animals are euthanized.

Average Shelter Costs • 15,000 lbs of food consumed each year• 14,000 lbs of cat litter • $25.00 daily cost to feed and house a dog• $18.00 daily cost to feed and house a cat 1
• Over $2 billion is spent annually by local governments to shelter and ultimately destroy 8-10 million adoptable dogs and cats due to shortage of homes 2

What hardware and software will be required to build it?
Hardware-High speed Internet connection to physically access data
could be provided by an ISP-Storage device that can serve simultaneous requests for access
could be provided by a server with hard drive Software
-Database software that can store and retrieve information on storage device
could be provided by Oracle or MySQL-Web interface to information stored on database

Database Overview• Owner database contains owner profiles with associated metadata.• Shelter database contains shelter profiles with associated
metadata. Also contains personnel listings with authentication data.
• Animal database contains animal profiles with associated metadata. Also contains lists of valid species, breeds by species, colors and dispositions.
• Datamining registry contains statistical figures that are called by reporting functions and knowledge-based decisions. Statistical figures are stored by shelter, type of metadata and type of disposition.
Please See Appendix May 6, 2010
Database Schema

Reporting Comes In Three Varieties• Trending gives statistical analyses over a given
timeframe for any number of data factors (IE How many black cats adopted on October 31st, 2009?).
• Occupancy returns lists of animals, limited via the various parameters, similar to performing a search using the website.
• At-risk evaluations allow polling of owners that have exceeded a limit on an “at-risk” activity and may be investigated.

Yearly Costs and Projections
• $475/month charge for each shelter• 23 shelters in Hampton Roads, 174 in Virginia,
870 in surrounding states• 60 shelters a year required remain afloat• Break even just after the second year, in the
25th month

Return on Investment• SPCA
– More animals adopted– Less costs for feeding/euthanizing/body disposals of animals– More freed space – More donations from happy patrons– Profits from data mining
• Discover animal abuse – Animal factories– Negligent pet owners
• Statistical Data– Adoptions statistics (breed, shelter, location, etc)
• End-User (Pet Owner)– Increased chance of being reunited with lost pets– Find lost pets faster– Search available pets for adoption
May 6, 2010
Benefits• More pets in homes (less strays)
• “It is impossible to determine how many stray dogs and cats live in the United States; estimates for cats alone range up to 70 million. – that is almost as many as the number of cats that are in homes (80 million)”1
• Less pets are euthanized, lives are saved.• Lost pets are reunited with owners.• Promotes the SPCA
