Dear Friends,

We ended 2012 with an adoption rate of 99.2%; Missoulians love to adopt! Red, pictured left, found his new home in 2012—thanks to a collaboration of individual volunteers, the Humane Society staff and social media. Please read Red's story on page 8, and meet him in person at the Ken Shughart on April 13th.

Last year was an unprecedented year for the Humane Society of Western Montana and our partnerships with fellow shelters and rescues. In 2012 we were able to help over 500 pets from 31 other facilities find loving homes. We want to thank all of our adopters for making adoption their first option and are excited about being able to transfer dogs (and some cats!) of all sizes into our adoption oriented community.

We were disappointed in the Agriculture's decision to table the Animal Fighting bill this legislative session. Montana is the ONLY state in the nation where it's legal to be a spectator in a dogfight. Animal fighting brings in illegal gambling, drugs and weapons. You can help 'upgrade' the law; please write to your state legislators and urge them to support this in 2015.

We launched our 50th year with a Celebrate 98 party in January and unveiled Kendahl Jan Jubb's wonderful painting Anniversary Party. It is currently on display at the shelter. You can win this piece by purchasing a $98 raffle ticket (only 98 will be sold), or you can buy a signed print for $198. Please turn to page 2 to read about all the 50th items we have for sale.

I look forward to seeing you at the Ken Shughart,

Kate began her journey with the Humane Society in 1993 when she was hired as an Animal Caretaker. She returned September 1998 to run the shelter and was instrumental in raising funds for the new building, and then again in April 2009 when she was hired as Development Officer.

We will miss her silly animal voices and, most of all, her deep concern for animals and the bond people have with their pets.

She promises to continue volunteering and is excited to be part of the 2013 Bone Ball committee. She said quite eloquently, 'I'm like a cockroach. You can't get rid of me.'

Kate and her dog, Hazel, all dressed up for the 2010 Canine Classic at Paws Up. Hazel, a terrier mix, was adopted from Missoula City-County Animal Control.

50TH BIRTHdAY 'PARTY ANIMAL' • AUGUST 23, 2013CARAS PARK PAVILIoN • MISSoULA, MT

Elizabeth Stone, the 2013 Ken Shughart recipientElizabeth's began her journey with the Humane Society as an Animal Caretaker in the 90's at the Missoula Humane Society, then volunteered her talent by taking photos of pets for events and 'Pet of the Week' advertisements. Elizabeth also created a limited-edition book called "Small Lives"—a series of portraits of animals awaiting adoption that encourages spay/neuter and adoption. Wayne Pacelle, CEO of HSUS, and actress Sissy Spacek wrote forwards for the books.

She joined the Humane Society's Board of Directors in 2007, and served as the Vice-Chair and Secretary. Today she donates her time as a member of the shelter's Fundraising Committee.

Elizabeth spearheaded the idea and donated the photographs for the very famous Calendar Pets calendar. We are thrilled to give this award in our 50th year to Elizabeth Stone, honoring the significant impact she has made on animals' lives.

AdVoCATE.oUR SPAY/NEUTER PRoGRAM HELPS KEEP THE CoMMUNITY'S AdoPTIoN RATE AMoNG THE HIGHEST IN THE CoUNTRY.

We would like to thank the Cadeau Foundation for their generous grant which funded our low-income spay/neuter clinic in Alberton, Montana this year. On February 23 and 24 we spayed and neutered 198 animals at this clinic and helped over 127 families who could not otherwise afford to alter their pets. The location of this year’s clinic was significant in that it was accessible to residents of Mineral County, where there is no animal shelter or veterinary care available. With increased awareness of the importance of spay/neuter and availability of low-income clinics, we have seen our intake numbers at the shelter reduced from over 8000 to just 1200 in 2012.

We would also like to thank an anonymous donor who provided a matching spay/neuter donation of $2000 in honor of Humane Society alum Tornado Marie and SNIP MT committee member Cherie Russell. Many generous gifts came in as a result of this donation, including two in memory of Clay and Mary Torian Donohoe and one in memory of Katie. This helped us surpass our original goal of $2000; we raised nearly $5500!

New this year, we will be offering our first ever 'California Littles' Camp! Campers who have attended at least one session of Critter Camp (in 2013 or previous years) have the option on enrolling in our S.T.A.R. Camp (Special Training to Adopt and Rescue), focusing on adoption of shelter pets, or the brand-new 'California Littles'' Camp, focusing on caring for and rehoming small breed dogs from overcrowded shelters in California. Also new this year, kids as young as 6 years old are welcome to enroll in our most popular Critter Camp (must have completed at least one year of kindergarten). Check out our website (myHSWM.org) to print the application or contact Mariah at [email protected] for more information.

With help from Marilyn Schmidt, Elizabeth Stone, Margaret Ambrose-Barton, Breanne Ender and local businesses, we raised nearly $4000 that night. About Paws AheadHelp us maintain a 98% adoption rate by volunteering. If you would like to help dogs like Red get adopted, email Jean at [email protected] or call 549.9295. Volunteers are asked to complete 25 hours of dog training prior to becoming a Paws Ahead volunteer.

By June of this year, Red will be famous. Thanks to a group effort of volunteers, shelter staff and community members, Red’s story is one of undeniable success. Red first arrived to the shelter in 2012 completely untrained and reactive to other dogs, lunging and barking at any sight of another dog. Staff trainer and behaviorist Jean Gilson quickly entered Red into our Paws Ahead program for dogs who need extra training and attention.

Because we have no time limits at the shelter, it is especially important to focus on keeping animals’ stress levels down, as well as working on training and behavior modification to make pets more adoptable than when they entered the shelter. Paws Ahead volunteer Mike Bayer did just that. He spent several days a week training Red to be a polite companion, teaching him all the basics like waiting at the door, staying until released and walking politely on a loose leash. Red also learned to tolerate being around other dogs, one of his biggest obstacles in finding a new adopter.

After spending many months in intensive training sessions with Mike and Jean, Red was ready to take his C.L.A.S.S exam (the Association of Pet Dog Trainers evaluation similar to the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen program.) Thanks to Sarah Spencer Hall, C.L.A.S.S evaluator and Go Fetch trainer, Red passed his provisional B.A. exam with flying colors and now has letters after his name! Better yet, the family who had been watching Red’s story unfold on our Facebook page knew it was time to make the commitment to adopt Red.

It will be almost exactly one year since we first met Red that his story, written by Mike Bayer, will be published in the APDT Chronicle of the Dog magazine, due out in June 2013. We continue to get wonderful updates on Red in his new home. Red on a long hike, Red on a play date with his dog friends, Red meeting kids from Critter Camp. The list goes on. And with the support of our on-staff behaviorist,

professional dog trainers and free behavior helpline, Red and his family will continue to get the help they need throughout his lifetime. As Mike Bayer writes in his article, “…the end of this story is really Red’s new beginning.” We couldn’t agree more.

Volunteer Mike committed 20 minutes, three times a week to help Red. Because of this, Megan (pictured right) adopted a well-trained friend.

EdUCATE. BY NICoLE NoLTE, SHELTER SUPERVISoR

Xena is one tiny warrior princess. Rescued from a negligent breeding situation, Xena and six of her family members were brought to the Humane Society. They were undersocialized and horribly matted with hot spots and hidden wounds. Through the efforts of shelter volunteers and HOPE Foster families, donations from many businesses including Ancare Veterinary Clinic and Showcase Pet Grooming and Supplies, these dogs began to trust people. Xena was the first in the group to be adopted, just 10 days after arriving at the shelter.

In her new home, Xena ruled the roost, snuggling on the sofa and learning to allow people to approach and pet her. On January 20th Xena was doing so well she went for a car ride with her family and, unfortunately, snuck out of the car.

Xena was missing for 26 days.

During those 26 days, Facebook and the Finding Bella Dog page became an essential tool to network Xena’s photo, report sightings and updates, solicit volunteers to help check the traps that had been set to safely capture Xena and to share encouraging thoughts with Xena’s family. Her family’s persistence and the support of the community made it possible for this warrior princess’ happy ending.

She really is a warrior princess.

MISSING A PET? HERE'S wHAT To do:Spread the word! Hang flyers and knock on doors in your neighborhood, share pictures and information on facebook and Craigslist, contact area shelters and newspapers.

Visit Local Shelters! People describe pets very differently. what is orange to one person, may be considered tan to another. Visit and walk through area animal shelters to make sure your pet is not already there.

Be persistent and don’t give up hope! Many lost pets have found their way back home.

Tag ‘Em! Be sure all your pets have a collar and Id tag with your current phone number. If your lost pet is found this is the fastest way to be reunited. Microchips work, too. But they are most effective in conjunction with an Id tag.

Many of you may remember Mark, Toto, Xena (pictured above), Scout, Edmund, Greyson and Burt. These Schnauzer/Maltese mixes were seven of 19 dogs rescued from a breeding/hoarding situation in Great Falls. Thanks to all who helped them, including Showcase Grooming (who donated the groomings) and Ancare Veterinary Clinic (who donated the spays/neuters).

dId YoU KNow??? we offer low-cost microchipping!
