T he AFL has consistently struggled to get a preseason competition right

for a number of years now.

The need to appease a sponsor has required some form of structure to clubs’ trial games but it continues to lack interest among the coaches for certain games and definitely among the fans.

Coaches mix up their sides regulary with often more youth than experience which is understandably their right in preparing their side for the real stuff. But there is little meaning to what the current concept represents.

Three games for each, usually in the far flung reaches of the country, and it seems the further a side who travels the fewer senior players make the trip.

Sure it’s great for the country towns to receive the exposure of the game but do they really get what they deserve?

A quick ‘in and out’ trip of their favourite side for a game between each clubs’ junior contingents, with no time to converse with fans which would probably be more worthwhile.

The current community visit program seems more beneficial to these regions where the clubs

spend more time in the different towns and in particular in the schools. They can then perhaps play an internal trial for fans to see their stars in action.

That then leaves the direction of how a preseason competition should be formatted. Or do we actually need one?

It’s all come to a head since Richmond coach Damien Hardwick’s farcical attempt to call off his side’s game against Port Adelaide last week, showing little respect for his opponent.

However, it does show the true feeling of preseason trials among some coaches.

Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has called for the preseason to mean something again with prize money put back on offer for the clubs. He even wants a trophy – but then again when your club hasn’t won one for a number of years, of course you desire some silverware.

(The Bulldogs last won a NAB Cup in 2010 but it’s been 62 years since their one and only premiership.)

Beveridge doesn’t want too many games but believes there should be some genuine competition in the preseason to build confidence for the season proper.

Preseason shambles

The prestigious Paris-Nice Classic, just finished, showed that several Australians could be major contenders again in the upcoming big Tour events, the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France.

Orica-Greenedge’s Michael Matthews wore the coveted yellow leaders’ jersey from start to penultimate stage when the race hit the mountains but he claimed the points’ title for the second time in a row placing him among the sprint hopes in either of the big events he competes in.

South Australian Richie Porte, from BMC Racing, was unable to achieve back-to-back success in the Paris-Nice but still managed third in the overall classification, 12 seconds behind winner, Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas, steering his form towards bigger achievements to come.

In the wake of Maria Sharapova’s drug announcement, Spaniard tennis great Rafael Nadal has been riled by allegations of cheating as well.

Unimpressed he declared that he was prepared to sue former French sports minister Roselyne Bachelot for accusing him of faking a knee injury in 2012, where he missed six months of tournaments, to cover up his own positive drug test.

“There are a couple of times I’ve heard comments like this and this is going to be the last one because I’m going to sue her,” Nadal said.

“I am tired of these things. I let it go a few times in the past. Not anymore. ... I want justice.”

Minister Bachelot would want to be spot on with her accusations.

THUMBS DownTHUMBS UPBY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

It is certainly a shambles at the moment.

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has called for a shorter preseason, saying three games are too many. His proposal has been to only have two trials and adding three weeks to the regular season so that clubs are playing eight teams twice and not just five under the current minor round system.

He believes this would create a more balanced season and a more competitive start to the year as coaches wouldn’t be taking it easy on senior players.

This, though, defies the players’ call for shorter seasons.

However, Hinkley’s suggestion holds some merit in just having a couple of trials and then jumping straight into the year. It has had a tendency to be hot in March but programming games in February, the AFL can be assured of heat issues that aren’t conducive to football.

Games, therefore, have to be reduced in time with longer breaks which do not allow the coaches to get much out these games. They also don’t want to give away tactics in trials either so are they really needed?

Clubs are getting better at preparing their players for the season internally so maybe intra-club matches should be enough.

A fourth new voice in less than 18 months is what the Adelaide players will be experiencing from the coaches box this

season. It is something they have had to get their heads around during the pre-season, which will be a tough thing to handle – especially initially.

Fortunately, the game plan will not be too different from that introduced last year by Phil Walsh, but there will still be a few tweaks that players will need to adjust to.

New Crows coach Don Pyke will bring his own thought process to how he wants the side to play, with little time for the players to get used to his style.

He will, though, be a breath of fresh air for some players who may have fallen into the outer of past coaches’ thinking, like perhaps Cam Ellis-Yolmen and Mitch Grigg, so they now have the chance to refocus their attention on proving their worth to the team.

New opportunities have arisen to impress with the departure of some players, most notably Patrick Dangerfield, but his loss will simply require another to step up or probably even two or three.

The inclusions to the squad in the off-season such as former Magpie Paul Seedsman and first-round draftee Wayne Milera have shown that they will fit in well to the structure of the side and have already put pressure on existing players to perform for spots.

Young gun Milera will even be taking up coach discussions for round-one selection with his pace and silky skills set to add further spark to an already formidable attacking line-up which includes skipper Taylor Walker, live wire Eddie Betts, key target Josh Jenkins and enigmatic Tom Lynch.

A number of players will be fighting it out for the other forward position including newcomer Troy Menzel, an improving Mitch McGovern and Jarryd Lyons who will welcome the mothballing of the subs vest and seems best suited to a half forward role.

The mid-field group remains strong, despite the aforementioned absentee, with Rory Sloane, Scott Thompson and Richard Douglas taking on senior responsibilities among the likes of rising stars Brad and Matt Crouch, Rory Atkins, Riley Knight, Ellis-Yolmen, Grigg and potentially Dean Gore.

At times, Brodie Smith, Rory Laird and maybe Lyons will be given on-ball duties too.

Pyke can spike the Crows

However, the most important thing for whoever finds themselves in the middle or predominantly around the stoppages will be to replace the damaging clearance rate that Dangerfield will not be providing this season.

While continuing on from last year’s ability to consistently score over 100 points per game will remain a benchmark set for every week this season, it will be just as crucial to limit their opposition’s scoring at the other end of the ground.

Defence will prove the difference as to whether Adelaide can improve on its reappearance in the finals in 2015. Last season’s work-in-progress must now come together as a defiant unit and instil itself with an even stronger resolve this year.

The glove, Daniel Talia, will again need to take a stranglehold of the back six which offers great rebounding strength with Smith, Seedsman and Jake Lever but it will be the containment of their opposition, through particularly Laird, Luke Brown and hopefully Kyle Hartigan, that will be the vital component required. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

An injury-free year from Brad Crouch will aid in Adelaide’s desire to rise up the AFL ladder. Photo: AAP

Achieve this combined with their goal-scoring flair, the Crows could rise further but it does have to meld well together in all facets of the game to do so.

Fans should buckle themselves in for another rollercoaster season which should at least equal that of last year and plausibly see the desired improvements come to fruition for the club that is always promising so much.

Adelaide has depth in most positions, although the biggest loss could be ruckman Sam Jacobs if he was injured.

Most pundits may be declaring a fall by the Crows in 2016, suggesting they over-achieved last season. But the character they showed under the circumstances can only do them well this year.

Finals should again be well within grasp and they will probably be battling closely alongside cross-town rival Port Adelaide for spots five to seven over the course of the season. Fourth could be a distinct possibly for either as well.

afl NEWS

It’s becoming an annual occurrence with Hawthorn being the hunted as usual in 2016. The Hawks will be chasing

an unprecedented fourth premiership in a row and are favourites to achieve that remarkable feat.

Early injuries will only give coach Alastair Clarkson the chance to develop his talented list further, with the likes of Will Langford, Billy Hartung, Angus Litherland, Jonathan O’Rourke and James Sicily getting more game time in the opening rounds which can only hold it in good stead for the latter part of the season.

Key forward Jarryd Roughhead and skilful midfielder Liam Shiels will be missing for an extended period over the first half of the season.

While Hawthorn is expected to once again be the frontrunner, it will be in individual matches where its dominance may subside somewhat with margins reducing and other sides matching its competitiveness during the minor round.

West Coast is considered the Hawks’ greatest challenge after an impressive season last year, despite an elongated injury list. With key players back in the frame, especially in defence with Eric Mackenzie returning from injury, the Eagles could be ready to give Hawthorn a real shake for the title.

They couldn’t combat the Hawks on the big stage in last year’s grand final but, as they say, will be all the better for the experience. West Coast will also be hoping for big things from new recruits Lewis Jetta, from Sydney, and former Brisbane Lion Jack Redden.

It appears the most likely side to be able to bring the might of Hawthorn undone, but a few others will be seeing this year as their time to stake their claim to flag success within a year or two.

Collingwood and Geelong seem to be on

Who can bring down the Hawks?

the verge of rising again after both recruited heavily in the trade period.

Corio Bay has gone Dangerfield crazy since the arrival of the ex-Crow star to Simonds Stadium and while he won’t singlehandedly bring success to the Cats, his touch of class will certainly aid in improving their status this season.

To achieve that success though, they will also need fellow newcomers former Blue Lachie Henderson, Zac Smith from Gold Coast, and ex-Eagles Scott Selwood to step in immediately.

The only thing is that neither were walk-up starts for their former clubs and it will be no easier at Geelong, so it could still go south for coach Chris Scott, with a few older boys remaining on the list at the same time.

At the Magpies, optimism is at its highest for a long while, with the inclusion of rising youngsters Adam Treloar from the Giants and James Aish from the Lions as well as high flying Jeremy Howe from the Demons.

From there, several clubs will be vying for spots in the top eight including our two local clubs.

Fremantle will be with them, still trying to capture that elusive flag.

Suns rebel Harley Bennell will add to an already star-studded engine room, but it’s hard to see where the Dockers’ goals are going to come from.

They will continue to be as dour as ever defensively but they also need to score well to compete against the truly top sides of the competition.

The next rung of clubs looks like dropping back a bit this season, including Sydney, North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs and Richmond.

The Swans and the Kangaroos have ageing lists, so this could be the last year for them to be considered finals contenders.

Even with ‘Buddy’ Franklin who is being spruiked as a midfielder this year, Sydney won’t be as assertive as it has been in the past but should just hang onto a finals berth.

North Melbourne, on the other hand, needs to do some rebuilding of youth to challenge again.

If Adelaide exceeded expectations last year

then the Kangaroos certainly over-achieved as well, making a preliminary final which they will struggle to do this season. Any side that relies heavily on a nearly 38 year-old is going to find it tough too.

The Bulldogs were the talk of 2015 with their sharp rise up the ladder, but it was their game style that impressed most. However, the other sides should be able to work them out this year so one can anticipate a slight lapse on last season’s accomplishments.

It will be a much needed learning year for them as they try to come back from a stand-out season and repeat it a year on. Their squad suggests they will become a finals force in a few years, though.

Others on the rise will be Gold Coast and GWS Giants but still on the cusp of really setting the competition alight, while Melbourne will also improve.

That leaves stragglers St Kilda, Brisbane, Essendon and Carlton for which it will be a long season.

NorwoodINS – Jaryd Cachia, Matthew Fuller, Anthony Wilson (all returning

from AFL), Lyndon Hupfield (GWS Academy), Josh Miller (Glenelg), Lewis Johnston, Luke Mitchell (North Adelaide), Andrew Kirwan (returns from overseas)

OUTS – Luke Partington (West Coast Eagles), Luke Surman (Hawthorn), Michael Newton, Andrew McInnes (returning to Melbourne), Mitch Wilkins (Victoria), Kane Murphy (returns to NSW), Dylan Reinbrecht (Glenelg), James Allan (retired), Liam Davis (overseas)

A disappointing elimination final exit for the Redlegs in 2015, after three consecutive premierships, has stoked the fire in the playing group to return to the top of the tree in 2016. A trio of players returning from the AFL offers greater inside grunt (Cachia), speed (Wilson) and precision disposal (Fuller) this season which complements the addition of Johnston in attack. If the latter can recapture his dominant best at the Parade, then a 60-plus goal season is on the cards, while Miller’s recruitment will place pressure upon Sam Baulderstone in ruck to maintain his standards. This season will also be a good test for coach Ben Warren, with the second half of 2015 stretching his coaching development after less than 50 games in the hot seat. Very hard to see them missing the top three and can make a real case for the summit.2016 PREDICTION: Second

Port Adelaide MagpiesPrimary INS: Aidyn Johnson (Bendigo Pioneers), Dan Houston

(Oakleigh Chargers), Cameron Hewett (North Adelaide), Riley Bonner, Will Snelling (West Adelaide)

Primary OUTS: Andrew Moore (Richmond), Ben Sawford, Jack Haarsma (Glenelg), Sam Gordon, Mitch Harvey (North Adelaide), Brad Coulson (Sturt), Jarred Redden (delisted – Woodville/West Torrens), Tom Logan (retired), Sam Russell Mason Shaw, Johann Wagner (delisted)

Much like Adelaide, it can be hard to line up the Magpies each season, but their list already looks formidable, albeit depending on injuries at AFL level. They will certainly miss the leadership of Logan and the steel of Moore around the middle but if the likes of Bonner and Snelling play the majority of the season at SANFL level, then they will add plenty around the ground. The game plan of first time senior coach Chad Cornes will be interesting to watch, particularly given his experience building a fledgling GWS as an assistant coach. If he can translate much of that promise when leading his own side, then the Magpies should play with plenty of flair and quick ball movement. Look a near monty for the finals.2016 PREDICTION: Third

SturtINS: Scott McMahon (North Melbourne), Brodie Martin (returns

– Adelaide), Aidan Riley (returns – Melbourne), Jack Osborn (Adelaide), Brad Coulson (Port Magpies), Dillon Mullins (Woodville/West Torrens), Patrick Wilson (returns)

OUTS: Jordan Dawson (Sydney), Jackson Allen (returns to QLD), Rory Taggert (returns to Victoria), Michael Coad, Matthew Duldig, Angus Kurtze (all retired), Angus Bruggemann, Lee Staple, Sam Smith, Tom Bartlett, Will Paynter, James Wundke (all regional/country football)

The return to Unley of incoming coach Martin Mattner gives the Double Blues a real impetus for the new season, particularly given his background during a highly successful era at Sydney. Much of this, however, is tempered slightly by some major departures in the key posts, with the loss of one of the most dominant SANFL ruckmen in Kurtze a major blow. While past their best in 2015, Coad and Duldig will leave holes in attack which look hard to fill quickly. McMahon will add poise, and there is no doubting the class of Martin and Riley around the ground but the recruitment of Mullins was hit with a major blow as his broken leg in the trial against South. There looks a huge load on Osborn in the ruck division and it is also hard to see where consistent winning scores will stem from. Will need all of Mattner’s magic to lift them significantly.2016 PREDICTION: Eighth

South AdelaideINS: Tom Fields (returns from Carlton), Cameron Hitchcock (Port

Adelaide via Ironbank), Richard Newell (West Adelaide), Cameron DeVisser (Ironbank)

OUTS: Brent Macleod, Frazer Dale (return to Victoria), Lachlan Boyd, Michael Ross, Sam Tharaldsen (local football)

Limited turnover at Noarlunga during the off-season, although the loss of Macleod and to a lesser extent, Dale, will place further pressure on the midfield rotations for coach Brad Gotch. The return of Fields, however, is a massive boost in defense, with his raking clearances by foot being a major catalyst for the Panthers rise in 2014. Newell adds high level outside speed and if Hitchcock can replicate his best crumbing work in attack that will be very welcome for an outfit that averaged less than 68 points a game last year. While there is no doubting the class around the ball with the likes of dual Magarey Medallist Joel Cross and Nick Liddle, there still appear some other clubs ahead of them in the pecking order.2016 PREDICTION: Seventh

ew Zealand showed the value of bold selection calls in the World Cup Twenty20 opener, with Australia set to

also make a few at the tournament.

The Black Caps highlighted the importance of picking a side suited to local conditions when they shocked hosts and favourites India in Tuesday’s tournament opener.

High-profile pacemen Trent Boult and Tim Southee were both overlooked - instead NZ’s three spinners snared nine of 10 wickets in the 47-run win on a sharp-turning Nagpur pitch.

Australia is yet to name an XI (at the time of going to print) or even look at the pitch for its World T20 opener, Friday’s clash with the Black Caps in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas.

The only contentious call seems to be whether Aaron Finch or Usman Khawaja opens alongside Shane Watson in Dharamsala.

Former T20 skipper Finch is expected to get the nod.

But the four members of the 15-man squad sitting out the trans-Tasman clash should still feel upbeat about their hopes of taking part in the event.

Australian coach Darren Lehmann flagged last week that Australia’s best XI was set

AAP

BY ROB FORSAITH – AAP

to change throughout the World T20 irrespective of form.

Lehmann has long adopted a ‘horses for courses’ selection policy and a country as geographically diverse as India is naturally going to produce some vastly different pitches.

Lehmann noted he and on-duty selector Mark Waugh would also study the opposition closely and factor in their strengths before finalising every team.

“The team will change depending on where we’re playing and what the wickets are like,” Lehmann said.

“The opposition always comes into it.

“I think that’s happened in T20 for years now, so everyone’s used to it and the other teams do the same thing.

“You look at match-ups, they’re pretty important in T20. We’ll look at that every time and factor that in.

“How many right-handers? How many left-handers? Ground size and wicket.”

Australia’s first match is all but a must-win game as it is likely to require three pool victories to progress to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Josh Hazlewood has anointed Nathan Coulter-Nile the leader of Australia’s attack at the World Twenty20.

Hazlewood is one of the first men picked in the national Test side but the 25-year-old says he doesn’t hold a candle to Coulter-Nile when it comes to the shortest format.

“He’s the real leader in this format,” Hazlewood said.

“He’s flying at the moment and is bowling good pace. He’ll have a big say in this tournament.

“It’s good to have that fresh bowler around the group lifting us to try to compete with him.”

The paceman is the fastest bowler in their 15-man squad and is set to bowl in the opening powerplay against New Zealand, when the field is up and the runs flow freely.

Mitch Marsh nominated Coulter-Nile as Australia’s key bowler at the tournament.

Marsh also hoped there were even more rewards to come for his Western Australia teammate.

Coulter-Nile was on the cusp of Test selection during the past summer when he dislocated his shoulder.

Marsh suggested an unlucky streak of injuries was the only thing stopping Coulter-Nile from playing at the highest level.

“If Australia can have him on the park over the next four or five years he’s going to play a lot of cricket for Australia,” Marsh said.

“Not only in the short format, but in the longer format as well.

“He’s a great bowler. He’s extremely skilful. He bowls good pace.”

Redknapp to manage Jordan against Aussies

Jordan has reportedly gained the guidance of former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp for their World Cup qualifier

against Australia.

Redknapp, who is also said to be taking over as Derby County’s manager in the English Championship, will take charge of the Asian nation for its round-two qualification matches against Bangladesh and the Socceroos, according to British newspaper The Sun.

Jordan trails Group B leader Australia by two points. The match between the sides could become a sudden-death playoff to keep each team’s chances of qualifying for Russia 2018 alive.

Redknapp’s surprise decision to guide Jordan for the two matches came about from his close association with Jordanian football supremo Prince Ali, who Australia unsuccessfully backed to take over Sepp

Blatter’s post as FIFA president.

“He asked me if I’d manage the team for a couple of matches and I agreed,” Redknapp said.

“I’ll go to the Forest game (for Derby) and then go straight to London and fly to Jordan.

“It’s a busy time but I’ve missed the buzz of being involved in football.”

motor sportHamilton watching Ferrari closely

V8s threaten to leave GP

World champion Lewis Hamilton will be taking a cautious approach into the new Formula One season, starting in

Melbourne this weekend.

The dominant Mercedes driver of 2015 is expecting closer competition this year, especially from Ferrari.

He believes Ferrari has “seriously picked up its game” and will provide a genuine threat to Mercedes.

Ferrari demonstrated strong pace in preseason testing, topping the times on five of the eight days.

“Honestly, I think we’re going to have a real battle, Ferrari has seriously picked up their game - that’s my feeling,” Hamilton said.

“It is still difficult to know. The car is good but Ferrari were strong at the end of last year. I think they’ve made a significant improvement from last year to this year.

“They did some incredible times in the last test on some of their long runs. I believe that they will bring an upgrade after the test days, so you can imagine they could bring a good

V8 Supercar drivers have supported CEO James Warburton’s threats to quit racing at the Australian Grand Prix if the category

doesn’t become a championship event.

Reigning champion Mark Winterbottom backed Warburton’s ultimatum “make this a championship round or we will leave”.

The V8 Supercars are contracted to the event until 2018 and this weekend’s four 12-lap races are not part of the championship due to restrictions placed on them by the Australian Grand Prix.

V8 Supercars boss Warburton last week warned that the sport would not continue racing past 2018 if the event was not given championship status.

“We want this to be a championship round because we put in as much effort as any other round for less reward,’’ Winterbottom said.

package for the first race.

“So I think we’re going to have a fight. You are going to see a good fight, which is what I want – and it is what we want. So I’m excited about that.”

Mercedes has had just as good a preseason testing program though, ranked fastest overall on fuel and tyre corrected pace.

“Testing was just incredible – the best I can remember in my career,” Hamilton said.

“The car feels even better than last year’s from both a performance and reliability perspective, which is saying something.

“It’s all so refined in every area and we can really be proud of what we’ve achieved over the winter.”

He declared he still had the drive for more championships but welcomed the new challenges ahead, including the closer competition.

“Together, we’re always searching for perfection,” he said.

“But that target is always shifting and you’re constantly faced with new challenges to reach it.

“It is a good track, a good event, the TV rights now line up… so there is no reason it can’t be a championship event. It should definitely be.’’

Winterbottom said the drivers would back the bold threat made by Warburton and risk leaving the event that sees them race on the same stage as Daniel Ricciardo and Lewis Hamilton.

“It is cool being at this event,’’ Winterbottom said. “But if (the threat) has to be made, to make it count, then we are right behind it.

“(V8 Supercars) do a really good job and we will back whatever they do. James and his team do a fantastic job and I will also support them. They are trying to better the sport and we are with them whatever they decide.’’

Winterbottom said he would be going out to win this weekend in a round that could kickstart his season following a disappointing

“It’s tough mentally – but that’s a good thing, as it forces you to be resilient and seek improvement in every area.

“I know there’s still more to come from me – I think I’ve shown that in the past two years.

“There certainly needs to be some extra in my tank, as the competition will be stronger than ever this year.

Changes to the radio rules are set to have a big impact on drivers, with engineers unable to provide performance prompts that have aided drivers in past seasons.

A new qualifying format should provide more excitement for fans as well, with an elimination process in place.

The 31 year-old British driver won the season-opening race last year and has been on pole for the previous two Grand Prix at Albert Park.

So he is keen for the new season to get under way.

“Now we head to Melbourne and the first chance to see how all this plays out on track,” Hamilton said.

“I can’t wait to get started.”

championship start in Adelaide at the Clipsal 500.

The Ford top-gun currently sits 12th on the championship table after a tough season start.

A weekend of domination at Albert Park last year kick started Winterbottom’s successful championship bid.

“We got a lot of confidence out of the Grand Prix,’’ Winterbottom said.

“A lot of people talked it down saying it meant nothing because it wasn’t a championship round but it certainly set up us.

“We learnt a lot there last year and got a heap of confidence out of it.

“We came off a bad weekend at Clipsal and we were able to turn it around.

“We had a bad start again at Adelaide but improved a lot on the Sunday.

“We will be looking to find improvement again here this weekend and hopefully it sets us up for a big couple of rounds.’’

SOCCERReds can’t go wanderingA

delaide United’s clash with second-placed Western Sydney Wanderers has become a crucial match in the make-up of its season

after last week’s loss to Melbourne City.

The Reds fell back to third on the A-League ladder following their 1-0 loss to the visiting Melbourne side after a week sitting on top.

The top four sides are now bunched with just three points between them and another loss away to the Wanderers on Saturday night could see all of Adelaide’s good work in the preceding weeks go to waste as they drop from the desired top two spots.

The defeat ended the Reds’ 14-game unbeaten streak, but captain Eugene Galekovic said that it was an opportunity to see where things needed to improve. He stressed though that the side needed to show resilience and bounce back from last week’s hiccup.

“We’ve gone over the game and spoken about what needs to improve, and the focus is now solely on how to best go about dealing with the threat of the Wanderers,” Galevokic said.

“It’s very hard to go on a long run because when you finally lose it’s easy for heads to drop immediately, but we haven’t let that happen.”

There are some injury clouds over key playmaker Marcelo Carrusca, the club’s leading goal scorer Pablo Sanchez and resolute defender Iacopo La Rocca which aren’t ideal and defender Tarek Elrich will miss another few weeks as well.

Therefore Galekovic has called upon younger members of his squad to continue stepping up and performing at the top level.

“You look at players like Mauk, Elsey and Kamau and they’ve come in and done a great job for the team,” he said.

“We’ve had these guys come in throughout the season and they have taken their chances well, and will again be ready if called upon come the weekend.”

Former Red and now Wanderer Scott Jamieson indicated his side was wary of an Adelaide team that had received a wake-up call last week but believed home ground advantage would be a big asset for this critical encounter.

Fourth placed Melbourne City faces top side Brisbane Roar on Friday night at AAMI Park so the Reds really need the three points this week to be in the mix.

“There are going to twists and turns, but we don’t want to be in the twists and turns,” Jamieson said. “We want to compete to get three points and finish first.

“With Adelaide United, they’ve got to come to us, which is an advantage for us. But we know

what we need to do and they’re going to be a tough team to beat.”

The Wanderers, who dropped two straight after experiencing a similar run of their own earlier in the season, don’t believe Adelaide’s bubble has burst.

“Confidence can get a little bit dented if you lose. I didn’t watch the game but by all reports they weren’t at their best. So maybe that could play in their mind,” Jamieson said.

“But with it being four games to go, I’m pretty sure that whatever happened on Friday night for them won’t happen again. They won’t be as sloppy as some people said.”

In a major boost for the home side, striker Mark Bridge and midfielder Dario Vidosic, another ex-Red, came through unscathed in their return from injury lay-off in last week’s 1-0 victory over Newcastle, giving coach Tony Popovic an entire roster available for selection on Saturday night at Pirtek Stadium.

Leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller hasn’t protected his champion galloper this week with Winx set to face one of his toughest

fields which will include star stablemates Press Statement and Kermadec.

Waller doesn’t have a Golden Slipper runner, but his glamour mare will still be the main attraction at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday in the Group One $1 million George Ryder Stakes (1500m).

“Winx is obviously the main focus for most from our stable on Saturday and she will be taking her place in the George Ryder, taking on a very good field,” Waller said.

“Press Statement will be one of those headline horses taking her on who is obviously a three-year-old stepping up against the older horses for the first time.

Price could be right on big day

Toughest battle for Winx

Randwick Guineas placegetter Gold Ambition isn’t out of it for Bjorn Baker as is Anthony Cummings’ progressive stayer Montaigne.

Similarly, a full field of 14 runners will do battle in the Group One sprint event, The Galaxy (1100m).

Group One winners Flamberge and Terravista head the weights under the handicap conditions, each carrying 58kg.

Flamberge scored his second Group One win when taking out the Oakleigh Plate last start but has been set a task drawing the extreme outside barrier in the Galaxy.

Terravista was ruled out of last Saturday’s Newmarket Handicap with a minor hoof issue but has recovered well enough to take his place here, alongside his Joe Pride-trained stablemate Ball Of Muscle.

Rebel Dane, trained by Gary Portelli returns to Sydney after campaigning in Melbourne while Team Hawkes’ Our Boy Malachi, Gai Waterhouse’s last start Challenge Stakes winner, English and the Peter and Paul Snowden pair of runners Dothraki and Bounding should all be around the mark.

Surprisingly Melbourne sensation Malaguerra,

trained by Lee and Anthony Freedman is among the four emergencies.

Spring stars Criterion and Mongolian Khan will be vying for autumn riches in the Group One Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

Winner of the Caulfield Stakes before placing in both the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup in the spring, Criterion disappointed when resuming in the Canterbury Stakes but takes a big jump of 700 metres in distance for the Ranvet Stakes.

The David Hayes and Tom Dabernig stable, winners of Monday’s Adelaide Cup, will also saddle last-start Chipping Norton Stakes runner-up Dibayani.

Caulfield Cup winner Mongolian Khan also steps out for the second time this campaign after a disappointing first up run.

Chris Waller makes up a third of the field as usual with Weary, Storm The Stars and Kool Kompany while John O’Shea runs Hauraki from gate two after two good placings so far this autumn.

Lloyd Williams-owned The United States is an interesting runner with a Melbourne Cup program set to be mapped out for him.

“Hugh was very happy with his work saying that he has come on nicely since his last start and will certainly provide good competition for Winx on Saturday.”

Press Statement suffered a shock defeat in the Randwick Guineas (1600m) earlier this month but pleased both Waller and top jockey Bowman in a piece of trackwork on Tuesday morning.

Doncaster Mile winner Kermadec, resumed with a third-place effort in the Group One Canterbury Stakes (1300m).

“He (Kermadec) also worked strongly over 1000m and his work was pleasing,” Waller said.

Despite the tough opposition, Winx is again odds-on to extend her winning run to eight,

but after the defeat of Press Statement as the shortest-priced favourite ever in the Randwick Guineas, her trainer is taking nothing for granted.

Press Statement is the $6 second favourite for his first attempt at weight-for-age and Waller says the colt is a worthy opponent.

The race also features First Seal for John Thompson, Murray Baker’s Turn Me Loose, and the Phillip Stokes-trained Hucklebuck.

Adelaide galloper Hucklebuck’s regular rider Dominic Tourneur has been pondering how his mount could upset the star Chris Waller-trained mare.

“It’s not going to be easy,” Tourneur said. “She (Winx) might scare a few away but it’s still a genuine Group I race.

“It’s going to be tough. Obviously, you can’t ride your race just to beat her. You have just got to ride your own pattern.”

HORSE RacingV

ictoria Derby winner Tarzino heads the 14-strong field for the Group One Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and trainer Mick Price will

be hoping for a big day on Saturday.

The Tavistock colt is coming off a last-start second in the Australian Guineas at Flemington two weeks ago and getting out to more ideal distances now with the AJC Derby his main target.

The Kris Lees-trained Le Romain scored an upset win in the Group One Randwick Guineas (1600m) last start and will be out to claim some more major scalps when stepping up in distance for the first time here.

Spring Group One winner Vanbrugh, trained by Chris Waller, returns to Sydney after a last-start sixth in the Australian Guineas and steps up to the 2000 metre distance that saw him win the Spring Champion Stakes.

Crown Oaks winner Jameka adds plenty of interest as the lone filly in the race but may require some Damien Oliver magic after drawing the outside stall.

John O’Shea has Victoria Derby runner-up Etymology and Group winner Shards while Gai Waterhouse brings River Wild back to Sydney after campaigning in Melbourne.

The Group One $3.5 million Golden Slipper draw has been kind to the visiting favourites, which has increased trainer

Mick Price’s confidence leading into Saturday.

Price has no reason to complain after a trouble-free Golden Slipper build-up continued for Extreme Choice and Flying Artie with inside barrier draws for both.

The Melburnian now holds all the aces with his two high-profile colts, with Extreme Choice and Flying Artie drawing barrier seven and five respectively, putting them in a good position to replicate their Blue Diamond Stakes quinella last month.

“I don’t like to be cocky, but I think they’re the best two colts in the race,” Price said.

“If they have a nice run you’ll see them blast away and they’ll be very hard to beat.”

The barrier draw has done little to change betting with Extreme Choice remaining a $2.80 favourite and Flying Artie firming into $5.

Flying Artie’s barrier fortunes have taken a turn for the better after starting from 13 in a Blue Diamond Prelude win and 15 when second to Extreme Choice in the Blue Diamond.

From an inside draw in the Slipper though, Price said he would approach stewards to have Flying Artie ridden much closer to the front than he was in the Blue Diamond, which would keep him in touch with his more fancied stablemate.

“We’ve had to get messy on him to ride around those bad barriers,” Price said. “At least in the Slipper we can go forward.”

Price insists there isn’t much between his pair, giving them an easy workout together from the 1200m chute at Rosehill on Tuesday morning of which he said continued a flawless Slipper campaign for both horses.

“The work was perfect and I’ve had no trouble with the preparation of the horses,” Price said.

“I don’t need to see them blasting away in trackwork.”

Extreme Choice will run in new colours this week after Hunter Valley stud Newgate Farm and the China Horse Club combined to secure a major shareholding in the favourite for an undisclosed amount.

The Slipper is being billed as a state-of-origin contest between Victorian Mick Price and the Sydney trainers who had mixed fortunes in the barrier draw.

Luck deserted the Godolphin team of John O’Shea.

Vics have upper hand in Slipper

Their main hope Astern drew the outside in the field of 16 plus one emergency while stablemates Telperion and Calliope have 12 and 15 respectively.

“Barrier 17 is no help, but he has plenty of tactical speed and there have been plenty of winners from wide gates,” O’Shea said.

“He has class, ability and determination. We can do nothing about the barriers. We just have to accept it and trust we have the horses as fit and ready as we can.”

Vancouver, 2015 winner, came from the outside alley and his trainer Gai Waterhouse was unperturbed by barrier 16 for Scarlet Rain with her other runner, Kiss And Make Up, drawn in nine.

“Both horses go forward,” she said.

“Scarlet Rain is unbeaten. She will go to the front and be going like that, all the way up the straight.”

She said Kiss And Make Up reminded her of her third winner, Sebring, in 2008.

“You’ve got to be very respectful to the Melbourne horses, but they’ve peaked, and they have to peak again,” Waterhouse said.

“I haven’t peaked yet.”

With Vancouver’s win last year, Waterhouse equalled the record of six Golden Slippers set by her father, the late TJ Smith.

Peter Snowden will once again be going into a Slipper with a horse that was a beaten favourite in the lead-up but he has said

punters should be wary of discounting the prospects of Capitalist on Saturday.

Capitalist was the early favourite for the race after comprehensive wins in the Breeders Plate, Wyong Magic Millions and Magic Millions 2YO Classic but was left in the wake of Kiss And Make Up as a $1.22 favourite in the Todman Stakes.

After the event, Racing NSW senior vet Craig Suann reported to stewards that Capitalist was “mildly sore (in front), slightly worse in the off fore”.

Since then though, Snowden has reported to stewards that Capitalist was showing no signs of lameness and the horse was cleared to take his place in the field after passing a vet inspection with flying colours on Tuesday.

“I’ve had no problem with him,” Snowden said. “The reaction to him getting beaten the other day really surprised me.

“He loomed to win at the furlong and it was just his fitness to my mind. He had a good blow after the race and he’s taken plenty from that run.

“That was always the plan because he’s a horse that comes to hand very quickly and Saturday’s the big one.

“His work since the Todman has been super and we’re going into Saturday expecting the real Capitalist to be on show.”

Barrier two puts him back in contention as well.

Stablemate and Black Opal winner Defcon didn’t fare as lucky, as he’s set to come from barrier 14.

Mick Price will be hoping to achieve a rare double, adding the Golden Slipper to his Blue Diamond win last month. Photo: AAP

FIVE POINT EXTRA

The CH9 Adelaide Football League has welcomed a new, major partner ALDI

to team up with the league, assuming the stadium naming rights of league headquarters for a three-year term.

ALDI is a discount supermarket chain with stores across the country and league chief executive officer John Kernahan said he was thrilled to welcome the new partnership

``We are delighted to have an organisation of ALDI’s international profile join our suite of blue chip partners and look forward to working with them to offer every opportunity for success as they launch their brand in Adelaide,’’ he said.

``The partnership is significant with ALDI enabling the league to continue to offer the football community access to affordable participation.’’

ALDI’s first South Australian

stores are now open. It will launch up to 16 stores in 2016 and up to 50 stores in total over the coming years.

An ALDI spokesman said the business looked forward to its involvement with the league.

``We are thrilled to be providing a new choice for shoppers in South Australia and through involvement with the CH9 Adelaide Football League as a major partner we can strengthen our place in the local community,’’ he said.

``Community engagement is a key to our success and what better way to do this than with grass roots footy.’’

Meanwhile, amateur football competitions are set to kick off after Easter with staggered starts for several competitions. Division 1 and 2 begin games on Saturday, April 16, Division 3 on Saturday, April 9 and Division 4 and below on Saturday, April 2.

IT’s a jokeA BLIND MAN WALKS INTO A STORE with his seeing eye dog. All of a sudden, he picks up the leash and begins swinging the dog over his head. The manager runs up to the man and asks, “What are you doing?!!” The blind man replies, “Just looking around.”

A BURGLAR HAS JUST MADE IT INTO THE HOUSE he’s intending ransacking, and he’s looking around for stuff to steal. All of a sudden, a little voice pipes up, “I can see you, and so can Jesus!”

Startled, the burglar looks around the room. No one there at all, so he goes back to his business.

“I can see you, and so can Jesus!”

The burglar jumps again, and takes a longer look around the room. Over in the corner by the window, almost obscured by curtains, is a cage in which sits a parrot, who pipes up again, “I can see you, and so can Jesus!”

“So what,” says the burglar, “you’re only a parrot!”

To which the parrot replies, “Maybe, but Jesus is a rottweiler!”
