Is football in Victoria in trouble?

The largest supported clubs are struggling which is

resulting in poor crowds at the AFL’s showcase venues, the MCG and Etihad Stadium.

Despite the AFL stating on several occasions that figures have reached all-time highs for certain rounds this year, it is clearly the interstate sides propping them up, in particular fans frequenting the Adelaide Oval.

There are some real cracks developing in attendances at games in Melbourne.

This can obviously be put down to the form of Victorian clubs Collingwood, Richmond, Carlton, Essendon and Melbourne – the top five of supported clubs in the Garden State.

Their games have been well down on usual crowds, even those involving each other.

Collingwood and Melbourne only drew 47,558 at the MCG on a Sunday in round four while Carlton and Essendon saw just 43,827 attend the same ground at the same time last week.

The Anzac day clash between

Collingwood and Essendon normally attracts around 95,000 but its novelty is waning in recent seasons with only 85,082 at this year’s blockbuster two weeks ago.

In other home meetings between two Victorian sides, Essendon and Geelong had a crowd of just 42,723 at the MCG in round four while Melbourne and St Kilda only 27,260 at Etihad Stadium in round six last week, when the Demons were going for three wins in a row.

Against interstate opposition, crowd numbers have been even lower such as Carlton and Sydney getting only 33,146 to their round two clash at Etihad, Melbourne against GWS Giants got 28,505, Richmond and Adelaide received a crowd of only 29,951 also at Etihad in round three and then last week just 27,077 at the Richmond and Port Adelaide match at the MCG on a Saturday night.

Contractual agreements for Collingwood, Melbourne and Richmond to play one or two home games at Etihad Stadium away from their normal base at the MCG would affect things but it still must be a worry for the league that its largest supported

Worries for Vic footy

Fairytales do happen as proven by Leicester City’s first ever English Premier League championship success – a victory many said couldn’t happen in today’s game of big money.

While a 1-1 draw with Manchester United did not clinch the deal on Sunday, favourable results elsewhere on Monday ensured the Foxes could not be overrun atop the EPL ladder, seven points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur with two weeks remaining.

Their previous best finish for the title was second in 1929 and it is their first piece of silverware since winning the League Cup in 2000.

They are also England’s first new title winner (other than the regular top sides such as Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City) since Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest 1978.

It has renewed belief among other lowly club supporters in all sports that dreams can come true.

The Parramatta Eels have been penalised for breaching NRL salary cap rules which must see them shed players immediately to comply with conditions.

The Eels have been found to be about $575,000 over the current stipulations in what has been described as “a system designed to enable it to exceed the salary cap without detection” since 2011.

They have lost all 12 points earned this season and can’t play for competition points until the issue is addressed, leading to an immediate fire sale of players.

Parramatta will be given the chance to respond to the allegations but it has been stripped of the Auckland Nines trophy won in the preseason and been fined the maximum penalty of $1 million (with $250,000 suspended if the club accelerates a governance reform within a set time frame) while top officials are expected to lose their jobs as well.

THUMBS DownTHUMBS UPBY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

clubs are at such poor levels for crowds.

The fan drop-off will only exacerbate further too as the season progresses and performances do not improve.

While North Melbourne sits on top, it is not coming with a big supporter base and the same time, it is great to see the Western Bulldogs closer to ultimate success for their beleaguered fans but their membership isn’t that high either.

The AFL thrives on the top clubs boosting its financial coffers and when they are down it impacts the whole competition.

For interstate fans, many would be overjoyed to see the troubles these sides are facing. But their clubs also need at least two of the top clubs prosperous to assist them financially at the end of the day.

Without that occurring, we may see ticket prices and food and beverage costs rise even higher than current extreme levels.

It all has an impact but us South Australians can at least take some enjoyment from our interstate rivals’ sufferance while it’s happening because the circle does turn.

The Crows and the Power did what they needed to win their respective clashes last week against struggling opposition but it was other results that stunned us most.• Is the top eight already set in stone after

just six rounds? – in the past 15 years, there has only been six occasions where the final eight changed after round seven so if you’re not in after this week then you’re season is practically shot

• Maybe this is why the league is considering the idea of expanding the finals system to a top 10 which could see wildcard playoffs come in – the NRL video replay bunker is being closely monitored as well to alleviate the current issue with varying grounds camera angles at score reviews

• Are the Giants a real premiership threat this season or did they just cop the reigning premier on an off day? – they are certainly well advanced on fellow expansion outfit in the Suns

• Gold Coast faced a two-hour honesty session at the club’s review of its humbling 120-point loss to the Cats (not a happy home coming for Suns captain Gary Ablett) on Monday which encouraged free and open discussion with everyone in the firing line – let’s see the response this week against Melbourne

• Too late for AFL bosses to be apologising after the event for incidents that shouldn’t occur but that impact results of games – rules are in place for the calling of a stretcher and they weren’t adhered to last Sunday which saw a kneejerk reaction potentially cost the Lions a win over the Swans

• A pre-game gaffe by Gabba officials had

the Sydney cheer squad off guard from the start too as it was prevented from taking its banner onto the ground because the crepe paper would leave dye on the ground in the wet conditions – no such problems with the Brisbane one though as it was made of cloth – the Lions have since apologised for the misunderstanding

• Former Essendon coach James Hird has failed in his legal bid to have Chubb Insurance pay his court costs of $659,520 – wife Tania won’t be happy so James may have to get a job to cover his expenses – but let it be the end of the whole saga now

• Winless Fremantle can spare a thought that it is not going as bad as Victorian country football club Nunawading in the Eastern Football League – the Lions as they are known don’t have much roar at the moment, their seniors losing 3.3 (21) to Forest Hill 54.26 (350) two weeks ago (a record score in the EFP since 1971) but it didn’t last long as their reserves lost 0.0 (0) to Ferntree Gully 63.26 (404) last week - the club is still in high spirits according to its president

• Is the AFL becoming the world game? – Port Adelaide entering China, a big American in Mason Cox fronting for the Magpies on Anzac day after two years learning the game followed by Sudanese refugee Aliir Aliir, who was born in a Kenyan refugee camp, debut for Sydney last week (we have also seen Sudanese-born Majak Daw make the grade at North Melbourne) among several overseas-born players or from other cultures, and now we hear the International Rules series is heading to the US in 2017

• Congratulations to Adelaide United – new A-League champions for 2015/16 (sounds good doesn’t it?)

AFL NEWS

The heat will be on Adelaide as it ventures back to Etihad Stadium to face an angry Western Bulldogs outfit.

Young gun Marcus Bontempelli turned the temperature up to high for this clash as early as straight after the Bulldogs loss to the Kangaroos last Friday night.

Bontempelli indicated that there was still some bad feeling around the club about the way the ‘sharing of information’ between the Talia brothers was handled after last year’s elimination final loss and the Bulldogs would be ready to evoke some vengeance for that encounter on Saturday night

The two sides have a long history going back to the 1997-98 preliminary finals and last year’s finals result has further fuelled the Bulldogs’ tenacity.

Despite not being as lethal as last year, the Bulldogs are renowned for their mosquito squad of small to mid-sized forwards, so it will still be crucial the Crows lift their intensity across the whole ground to restrict the high number of inside 50s they have been allowing their opponents to rack up in the early rounds.

The absence of rebounding small defender Rory Laird due to a fractured toe is not what Adelaide needed leading into this particular clash, especially the way he has been playing.

From the loss last week, the Bulldogs did take away the fact that they contained North Melbourne to half its average score from the first five rounds and a similar defensive effort this week could produce a result more in their favour.

They have added this feature to their game this season and the Crows are vulnerable when put under greater pressure and their freedom to run into space is halted.

Adelaide’s attack though can take advantage of the Bulldogs lack of size in the back half as well, giving skipper Taylor Walker the chance to be more of a presence and regain some form while fellow big forwards Josh Jenkins and Tom Lynch also stand tall in front of goal.

The Crows’ mosquito fleet of Eddie Betts and Charlie Cameron can create their own havoc when the ball hits the ground.

Continual bombard inside 50 will trouble a besieged Bulldogs backline which coach Luke Beveridge concedes is still a work in progress with their own running defenders Bob Murphy (knee), Jason Johannisen (hamstring) and Matt Suckling (knee) missing and having to shift midfielder Lachie Hunter, under a concussion cloud from a head knock he received from suspended Kangaroo Lindsay Thomas.

Heat turned up on Crows

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Port Adelaide got over one hurdle last week, beating an under-the-pump Richmond, but has another in front of it this week with Brisbane coming to town.

Although the Lions have only won one game so far, they have looked a better side than that suggests, especially last week controversially going down to the Sydney Swans.

It was an outcome that has intensified some animosity among the coaching and player group together which is sure to fire them up for Sunday evening’s encounter at Adelaide Oval.

Big Lion Stefan Martin looms as a danger man for the Power who will be lacking a true number one

ruckman leaving much to rest on young shoulders with Dougal Howard having to step up again.

Matthew Lobbe is now on the long term injury list, succumbing to a knee injury in the SANFL last week.

Brisbane’s onball brigade of Tom Rockliff, Mitch Robinson, Daniel Rich and Dayne Zorko is more than capable of exploiting its ruck advantage than the Tigers managed last week.

Port Adelaide midfielder Robbie Gray will miss again but forward Chad Wingard should be available after further assessment on his delayed concussion sustained two weeks ago.

RICHMOND V HAWTHORNFriday 7.20pm, MCG

Richmond runs into Hawthorn at just the wrong time after a loss and struggling itself. However, the Tigers have a solid recent return against the Hawks having won three of their last four clashes. That includes an 18-point win last season at the MCG on a Friday night in July after the Tigers opened with 3.4 to 0.3 in the opening term. Hawthorn recovered to lead by two points at half-time but suffered another goalless third quarter to trail by 18 points at the last change, a margin it held to the finish. Jarryd Roughead was held scoreless with the Hawks reduced to just four contributing goal-kickers. Richmond kept the ball with 110 marks to 64 while Anthony Miles led the way with 30 possessions. The sides meet twice this minor round after seven straight years of just one rostered match. Richmond also beat Hawthorn by 62 points in 2012 and by 41 points in 2013. RICHMOND $7.50 HAWTHORN $1.09

WESTERN BULLDOGS V ADELAIDESaturday 7.10pm, Etihad Stadium

Goals can be expected when free scoring Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs lock horns at Docklands. The Crows have won four of their last six meetings including their most recent clash in last year’s second elimination final at the MCG. The Crows led at every change by nine, eight and 11 points. However the Bulldogs kicked four of the first five goals in the final term to lead by seven points at the 17-minute mark before goals to Taylor Walker and Charlie Cameron put the Crows into the semi-finals. Adelaide won by seven points, 16.13 (109) to 14.18 (102). The Bulldogs though won in round four last year at Docklands by 57 points when Jake Stringer scored six goals. The Dogs lead seven wins to two at Docklands with the Crows’ wins coming in 2002 and 2014. The Bulldogs also lead overall 22 wins to 19.WESTERN BULLDOGS $2.00 ADELAIDE $1.82

SYDNEY V ESSENDONSaturday 4.05pm, SCG

Sydney has won its last five games against Essendon which is the Bloods’ best streak since their seven wins in a row in the 1930s. Their longest winning run against the Dons is eight straight from 1915-20. Their only clash last year was in the opening round at Homebush when Sydney recovered from a frightful first half when it was held to just one goal and trailed by 22 points at the main break. The Swans were even further adrift at three quarter-time, trailing 3.8 to 9.6. However, they sailed home with 7.4 to nothing in the final term to win 10.12 (72) to 9.6 (60). Sydney didn’t draw level until the 26-minute mark with a Kieren Jack goal, scoring again through Lance Franklin and Isaac Heeney in a long term that lasted 35 minutes. Essendon hasn’t won at the SCG since winning by a point in 2007.SYDNEY $1.01 ESSENDON $15.00

GOLD COAST V MELBOURNESaturday 4.40pm, Metricon Stadium

Gold Coast and Melbourne are another two sides that haven’t met since the opening round last season. The Demons won that day at home by 26 points with three goals from Jack Watts. The Suns had won their previous three matches. Incredibly, these sides have met just once before on the Gold Coast. That was in 2013 when the Suns won by 13 points with three goals from Campbell Brown. Gold Coast’s only other home game against Melbourne was in round four, 2011 and played at the Gabba with Carrara not yet available for AFL matches. The Demons lead overall four wins to three but they have won only two of seven games at Carrara.GOLD COAST $1.95 MELBOURNE $1.86

COLLINGWOOD V CARLTONSaturday 1.15pm, MCG

Carlton and Collingwood are two fierce rivals stuck at the wrong end of the ladder. They shared their lowest ebb in 2005 when Carlton was bottom with four wins and a draw and Collingwood was second bottom (15th) with five wins. The sides split their wins that season but it’s been all Collingwood recently with the Magpies winning this derby on the last six instances. Carlton’s last win was by 23 points in 2012. Last year, Collingwood won by 75 points in round five, winning all four quarters of a one-sided game. The Magpies produced 15 goal-kickers with no-one scoring more than two. In round 19, Collingwood led at every change to win by 18 points with four goals from Alex Fasolo and Ben Reid. The Magpies now trail Carlton by just three wins, 125 to 122. Four games have been drawn.COLLINGWOOD $1.31 CARLTON $3.40

GEELONG V WEST COASTSaturday 1.40pm, Simonds Stadium

Geelong and West Coast have shared three wins apiece since the Cats reeled off a club record six straight wins from 2007-10. The Eagles won their only meeting comfortably last year in round nine at Subiaco. West Coast won by 56 points, 16.24 (120) to 10.4 (64). Josh Kennedy booted six goals as the Eagles slammed on 7.3 to 1.1 in the final term, having recovered from a vulnerable half-time position where they led by just nine points, 4.17 to 5.2. This game though is at Geelong where the Cats won in 2014 by 75 points, 16.11 (107) to 4.8 (32). Tom Hawkins, George Horlin-Smith and Joel Selwood all scored three goals in that game. Geelong leads 13-8 with one draw at home where the Eagles haven’t won since 2006, their only victory there this century.GEELONG $1.53 WEST COAST $2.50

ST KILDA V NORTH MELBOURNE Sunday 2.50pm, Etihad Stadium

North Melbourne has won its last four games in a row against St Kilda by the pretty comfortable margins of 33, 68, 59 and 37 points. St Kilda had won their previous four games against North. The Roos won eight in a row against the Saints from 1998-2003 and a club record nine in a row from 1974-78. Last year, the Saints surprised North with a 20-point half-time lead in Hobart, 6.11 to 4.3. But the Kangaroos turned things around in the second half scoring 14.9 to 5.6 to win 18.12 (120) to 11.17 (83). Drew Petrie finished with four goals. This is their first meeting at Docklands since 2013 and will be Petrie’s 300th game for the Kangaroos. The Saints lead 10 wins to eight at the ground but haven’t beaten North there since 2011 when Stephen Milne, Justin Koschitzke and Adam Schneider were all still at large. Overall, the Saints lead just one win – 76 to 75 with two games drawn.ST KILDA $3.35 NORTH MELBOURNE $1.33

FREMANTLE V GWS GIANTSSaturday 7.40pm, Domain Stadium

Fremantle’s given GWS few happy memories in their short AFL lives to date. And it’s no wonder. The Giants have never played the Dockers anywhere but Subiaco. That will change in round 22 when GWS finally brings the Dockers home to western Sydney. But for now, they’re stuck in the west of Australia where they lost in 2012 by 95 points after seven goals from Matthew Pavlich. In 2013, the Dockers booted 16 goals to one after half-time to win by 113 points. A year later Hayden Ballantyne booted five which saw the home side win by 76 points. Last year, the Giants never really looked like winners but performed much better in a 21-point defeat, 12.12 (84) to 9.9 (63). The final quarter last year saw GWS kick 4.1 to 2.1 and was just the second time they’d won a quarter in four games against the Dockers. Things look different this time around though.FREEMNTLE $3.55 GWS GIANTS $1.30

Brisbane and Port Adelaide will meet twice this season for the first time since 2009. Surprisingly, it has been the Lions who have won most of the recent spoils taking five wins from their last seven encounters. That includes a 37-point win at the Gabba last year. Port led by seven points at quarter-time but Brisbane scored 14.10 to 6.14 after that to win 15.12 (102) to 8.17 (65). Josh Green and Mitch Robinson both booted three goals for the winners. Port won their last clash at Adelaide Oval in 2014 in emphatic fashion by 113 points when Jay Schulz scored seven goals. The Power booted 14 goals to three after half-time. It remains Brisbane’s only clash against Port at the Oval. However, Brisbane has always fared well in Adelaide and won six of 13 games against the Power at Football Park. The Lions lead overall 15 wins to 13 with two draws.PORT ADELAIDE $1.25 BRISBANE $4.00

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 7BY CHRIS KENDALL

GLENELG V EAGLESFriday 7.10pm, Glierdol StadiumBROADCAST: Via the SANFL App or www.sanfl.com.au

A disappointing result against North Adelaide after Glenelg showed so much promise when it was never in the hunt in a 33-point loss to North Adelaide. Former Tiger Lewis Hender was prominent for North, in a blow to Glenelg’s solid start to 2016. A bye for Woodville/West Torrens provided a good opportunity to freshen Michael Godden’s troops, particularly with a rare night game this week for the Eagles.

Despite the positive start to the season Glenelg still has just the one win and will need a big result here if it is to start making a charge for finals action. Glenelg’s run and spread has undoubtedly improved but it still appears a little tentative at times when entering the forward 50. Any errant entries will set up rebound for the Eagles defenders such as Patrick Giuffreda, Luke Thompson and Phil Raymond. There appears a few more Eagles capable of snagging two to three goals, which leans overall to the visitors.TIP: Eagles 13-24

SOUTH ADELAIDE V NORWOOD Saturday 2.10pm, Hickinbotham OvalBROADCAST: Life FM

The stunning start continues for South which stormed home from 41 points down in the third quarter to defeat the Adelaide Reserves by the narrowest margin with the last kick of the day in remaining unbeaten for 2016. South’s belief and faith in one another is similar to what was seen at Norwood for many recent seasons, but seems to have deserted it this year, epitomised by a heavy loss to Central.

The fashion in which the Panthers are running, carrying and moving the ball so quickly into a multi-dimensional attack is irresistible, and is taking the league by storm. Ordinarily, the premiership table would suggest a big win to South here, but these are the types of danger games that have brought undefeated teams undone in the past. If Norwood can throw off the shackles, and look to really enjoy its football again with a pressure valve released, then it has the potential to catch South on the hop. But there are too many ifs at this stage to tip against the Panthers.TIP: South Adelaide 25-36

PORT MAGPIES V WEST ADELAIDE Saturday 2.10pm, Alberton OvalBROADCAST: Via the SANFL App or www.sanfl.com.au

Two teams very much down on confidence meet at Alberton in a game that could set the path for their season. While injuries have stymied Chad Cornes’s charges, Port is simply not playing with the same spark and authority of recent years. The situation is even worse at Milner Road, however, with the reigning premier sitting 0-5 and seemingly in freefall in attempting to defend its title.

The Magpies still appear to have a few more options who can turn their form around quickly than those at Mark Mickan’s disposal at West. So much of the game is played above the shoulders and it appears that West is really struggling to unlock the key that brought it the 2015 premiership. This looks to be a real arm wrestle and it will come down to which second level players can step up to take the pressure from the stars. At this stage, Port appears slightly better placed to do so.TIP: Port Magpies 13-24

NORTH ADELAIDE V ADELAIDE RESERVES Sunday 1.10pm, ProspectBROADCAST: Channel Seven

North continues its revival under Josh Carr, registering a dominant win over Glenelg last week. It was led by six goals to Alex Barns and a sound performance across the board. After a couple of seasons in the wilderness the Roosters seem to be finding their belief again. But they will need it against an Adelaide unit that tasted its first defeat of the season from the last kick of the day against South.

How both teams respond this week will be fascinating, with North on the edge of the top five and needing to keep building the early wins to lay the foundations. Adelaide will be smarting at coughing up a lead close to seven goals in going under to South. It should look at length to the tape of the last quarter as to its tactics in trying to close the game down rather than building on its lead. There is no doubt North has improved significantly, but this may be just beyond them.TIP: Adelaide Reserves 13-24

Cheat cap and you will get caught: NRL

New to Brad Jones Racing in 2016, Tim Slade, is looking ahead in the V8 Supercars Championship with some confidence as

the series reaches a block of tracks where the team has traditionally produced good results.

Teams and drivers will do battle in the Perth SuperSprint this weekend at the Barbagello Raceway where Brad Jones Racing broke through for its first ever win with Jason Bright in 2011.

Two weeks later, it’s to BJR’s home track at Winton in Victoria, followed by Hidden Valley in the North Territory in mid-June.

“Typically those high-grip tracks are strong for the team and tend to suit its cars,” Slade said.

“There are bits and pieces that are different on the car from this stage last year so it is always so hard to predict how it is going to be.

“But you can look at a long history of BJR and that’s been their trend; there would be different bits and pieces on their car every single year. So

NRL integrity unit boss Nick Weeks says Parramatta’s salary cap crisis is proof that clubs which attempt to work outside rugby

league’s salary cap will be caught.

After Canterbury, Melbourne and the Warriors before them, the Eels are the latest club to be disgraced after being caught cheating the NRL’s competition equalising mechanism.

The Eels have been stripped of all 12 competition points they have accrued so far in 2016 and fined $1 million.

Weeks said the Eels had exceeded the cap by $570,000 already this year and have blown it out by $3 million since 2013.

I am looking forward to it, it should be good.”

Slade has taken some time to adjust to his new Commodore, notably grappling with the brake package.

He has also yet to qualify in the top 10 where he acknowledges pace needs to lift as race-wise, his speed has been consistent with his rivals.

The 30 year old has finished eighth twice in the last two SuperSprint rounds in Tasmania and at Phillip Island for his best results so far with BJR.

“I really feel our race car is a lot better than our qualifying car at the moment, so I don’t think at Phillip Island for example we had the pace to be on the podium, but I feel we had the pace to be fifth or sixth type of area,” he said.

“We were eighth in Tassie and eighth in Phillip Island but when you start back there it’s always difficult to get through to where you should be

The NRL’s investigations into the Eels and the subsequent sanctions were a warning to all clubs thinking of circumventing the rules, Weeks said.

“The thing with the salary cap is that where there is a system like we believe to have occurred here (at Parramatta) on a large scale the prospect of it coming out is pretty high,” Weeks said.

“I think most clubs understand that

“This might be a message to other clubs that they need to be compliant and careful in their salary cap practices.

“The system is reasonably effective. We have a

based on your race pace.”

Perth’s Barbagello Raceway is among the highest tyre degradation circuits in the championship and is being run entirely on softs over the weekend.

It’s a combination though that gives Slade confidence that he can achieve his best results yet for BJR.

“I can’t think of any reason the car won’t be speedy in the race,” Slade said.

“But more importantly at Perth I think it will be quite good with its tyre life, so that is something I am looking forward to.

“I feel as though going to a high degradation place like Perth, if we can qualify at the front there is no reason why we can’t race up there based on our race pace from the last couple of rounds.”

salary cap auditor, he has a team, and when we are put on notice there might be a breach of the rules we will go and investigate and that is what we have done here.”

Despite the extent of the NRL’s sanctions, NRL CEO Todd Greenberg admitted the saga was bad for the image of rugby league.

“It is not good for us, we have had nine good rounds and memberships and (TV) ratings are at an all time high. Rugby league is absolutely in tremendous shape.

“I didn’t want this day to come, but our duty is represent the best interests of the game.”

Most were looking at Payneham Norwood Union and Tea Tree Gully being the main contenders in 2016 but a newcomer has

emerged to add some spice to the season.

After claiming last year’s Division 2 title, PAOC has recruited strategically for its long-awaited return to the top grade of the Channel Nine Adelaide Football League and appears to be a serious threat from early-round performances.

The Reds punished the Gullies last week with exceptional ball use in the second half of their clash to state their flag intentions.

Tom Bartlett, Nick Clayfield and Cameron Graetz continued their stellar season form, lifting their intensity further in this clash and sending the rest of the competition a message with a compelling 33-point victory.

Prince Alfred OC faces fellow college outfit Rostrevor OC on Saturday.

ROCs have been the underperformers so far, with a good squad of returning and new stars yet to show their true potential, drawing their encounter with Port District last week.

They could regret letting that result slip at the end of the season and will need to lift their game quickly to push their finals credentials.

The Gullies will be out to bounce back straight away when Henley visits Pertaringa Oval this week.

The Sharks are now the only winless side in Division 1 and will find it tough against Tea Tree Gully, particularly after its loss.

Player departures have seen Goodwood Saints back in the pack this year and the re-

build to the top could take some time for the competition’s strength over the past decade.

Their victors last week are the new force in Payneham Norwood Union.

Jonathan Giannini, Luke Clark and Jack O’Leary of the Falcons were at their imposing best in their side’s first opportunity to respond to last year’s grand final outcome.

They head to University Oval on Saturday to play the Blacks who became Unley Mercedes Jets first victim in Division 1 last week.

The Jets will be hoping it is just the first of many but a challenging trip to Salisbury North does await them.

Adelaide University’s goal-kicking on the tricky confines of Kingswood Oval troubled it throughout but the home side always had its opponents up against the ropes.

Luke Heaslip, Nathan Chettle and Blake Harris will find it a different experience this week at Salisbury North Oval.

The Hawks stayed in the top five after a hard fought six-point win over Henley.

Brad Johansen, Jamie Solly and Josh Calyun are sure to make it hard for their visiting opponents on Saturday as well.

Scotch OC has broken a winning drought at Broadview Oval that had lasted nearly 50 years.

Its last victory at the ground was back in 1967, thanks to club stalwart Geoff Heard.

Scotch OC jumped its opponents from the outset before the Tigers rallied to be just one point in arrears at the main break.

However, the visitors took the advantage away again from the start of the second half and never gave it back this time to run out decisive 41-point winners.

Well positioned at third on the ladder, Matthew Box and Lachlan Giles will be keen to put some pressure on those sides above them when Scotch OC faces PHOS Camden on Saturday.

The Phantoms will be coming off their first victory of the year after a hard slog against

Mitcham looks set to build on its flying start to the season when it meets Kilburn away this week. Mitcham sits fourth with

three wins, last week accounting for Golden Grove by 47points with Steven Webster (seven goals), Simon Tucker and Brett Aitken among the best. Kilburn is battling in ninth place, last week falling to Pembroke OS by 58 points. James O’Loughlin, Jason Martin and Michael Howson (five goals) led the way. Hard to see anything but a Mitcham victory by 14-25 points.

Flinders Park is crusing in second place and unbeaten, taking on Golden Grove at Flinders Park this week. The Reds gave Plympton no chance to win by 87 points last week with Thomas Dunn, Kieran Johanson and Jay Hansen leading the way. Golden Grove is finding the competition tough, losing on Saturday to Mitcham by 47 points. Sam Scudds,

Nathan Brook and Sam Gunning (three goals) stood tall. It’s the Reds by 28-40 points.

Athelstone also is going along nicely and meets Gepps Cross at Max Amber Sportsfield. The Raggies crushed Walkerville by 102 points last week with Scott Sullivan, Matthew Leigh (three goals), Angus Owen and Josh Sykes (five goals) among the best. Gepps Cross has had a mixed season with one win to sit seventh. Last week it saw good games from Brodie Hudson (five goals), Nathan Brice and Mark Boothey in its loss to Seaton Ramblers by 35 points. Home ground sees the Raggies tipped by 26-38 points.

Seaton Ramblers hosts top side Pembroke OS in what could be one of the games of the round. The Ramblers recorded a solid win against Gepps Cross on Saturday with Todd Gates, Jarrad Brusnahan and Darren Tremaine among the best. The Kings are in top touch

without loss, last week beating Kilburn by 58 points. Alex Catford, Charles Canny and Eljay Connors played strongly as did Thomas Evans with seven goals. The Kings by 12-26 points.

Plympton and Walkerville have won just the one game between them. The Bulldogs’ best in their big loss to Flinders Park were Brodie McLeod, Jack Donkersley and Nicholas Webster. Walkerville also had a tough day, down to the Raggies by 102 points. Rory O’Brien, Jed Woolford and Ty Allen led the way. Maybe the Cats 10–26 points.

SMOSH West Lakes but Matthew Jacquier and Justin Whitford will need more assistance if they are to give their visitors a fright this week.

Broadview will play another side that celebrated its first win of the season last week in Sacred Heart OC at neutral Aldi Arena.

SHOC revealed how long a year it will be for Portland, even back a level, by handing out a resounding 80-point drubbing last week.

Taylor Angel and Tom Redden can create more uncertainty for the Tigers this week.

In such a tight competition, matches like this will be critical to finals chances.

Gaza and SMOSH West Lakes are also in a similar position.

Both experienced disappointing losses last week so a win is vital for confidence and ladder spots moving ahead.

Old Ignatians and Modbury are not having such worries though, perched atop the ladder, without a loss.

The ex-college boys will boast beating counterparts St Peters OC by 10 goals last week while the Hawks questioned Gaza’s premiership hopes.

Home ground favours Old Iggies but Modbury travels well.

It should be a great contest between the likes of Luke Washer, Will Abbott and Greg Gallman of Old Ignatians and Hawks Tim Davey, Jake Beinke and James Baron.

Eastern Park, back on its home deck, will present a tough challenge for winless Kenilworth this week. The Demons, fourth

with two wins, found Westminster OS too solid last week, losing by 45 points. Shaun Gatto, Paul Jones and Nathan Warren stood tall for the Demons. Kenilworth found Hope Valley too strong after quarter time to go down by 74 points away last week. Nicholas Chesser, James Siemering and Davin Natt were solid for the Kookas. The Demons look good again by 36-48 points.

Edwardstown will enjoy the home ground and Westminster OS the short travel to the ground when they meet. Towns have recorded a couple of tight victories in their three wins, last week beating Pooraka by four points away. Brinley Duggan, Aaron Parsons and Toby Case played well. Westminster OS sits on top of the ladder on percentage, last week beating Eastern Park by 45 points with Jared Shattock, Nat Ryan (three goals) and Craig

The Hounds have taken over the Division 5 competition in more ways than one.

While Blackfriars OS remains the only undefeated side at this level, Hectorville has quietly snuck up on its nicknamed equivalent to sit just behind in second spot on the ladder.

Hectorville managed this by beating Pulteney with ease last week, boosting its percentage in the process, winning by 84 points, to make the move.

To keep their spot though, these Hounds will have to ward off the Panthers on Saturday.

At home, this should be an enthralling encounter for Jake Mazzone and Luke Broadbent of Hectorville to really prove their side’s potential for the season.

Smithfield is particularly imposing when on song but it is not quite to that point at this stage of the season.

The Panthers practically pinched their match last week against Greenacres, much to the efforts of Nathan Ruskin and Michael Gollan.

Hounds pack the top

Blackfriars OS dominance though continued to reign, with a forceful 44-point victory over bottom side Elizabeth.

The top-of-the-table Hounds will be given a greater test against Rosewater on Saturday so Sam Murphy and Matthew Brincat need to be ready for a more vigorous opponent.

Bulldogs Alex Birch and Shaun Jacobsen are keen to join the big boys higher on the ladder where they believe they should be.

Greenacres looked the superior outfit for most of its game last week, especially after keeping Smithfield goalless in the third quarter, but could not withstand the oncoming onslaught as the home side kicked six goals to two to snatch a seven-point triumph.

The Dragons will need to regroup following such a heart-breaking loss and show its resolve against CBCOC which must do the same in another crucial encounter.

Lockleys was made to work for its win over the Dolphins last week to remain among the top sides.

John Rowswell and Daniel Voyzey from the Demons won’t want a similar fight on Saturday when at Argana Park to face the winless Elizabeth.

The Eagles have been the whipping boy so far but they can’t be taken lightly, particularly at home.

Glenunga is showing how potent its forward line is but still been unable to add to its one victory for the year.

Coach Brian Leys will be working his players’ defensive attributes to ensure more wins are achieved over future weeks.

The Rams get no better opportunity than against the other winless club here in Pulteney on Saturday.

Tasborski (six goals) leading the charge. An intriguing matchup. Maybe the Dragons by 8-20 points.

North Haven and Hope Valley are close on the ladder with two wins each and lock horns at Largs North Reserve. Last week the Magpies had a bye, while Hope Valley had 74 points to spare against Kenilworth with Daniel Williamson, Jamie Dowling and Jayke Hellmanns in the action. The Magpies at home get the nod by 16-26 points.

Colonel Light Gardens and Pooraka, both last-round losers, meet at Mortlock Park. The Lions were belted by Salisbury by 84 points last week Emmett Wood, Bryce Smith and Jakob Napier among the best. Pooraka had plenty of scoring shots but went down to Edwardstown by four points at home with Brayden Coombs, Steven Zolnowski and Jordan Hurst solid. The Lions can hit back but only just, 10-24 points.

Brahma Lodge should provide a tough visit for Mitchell Park when the sides meet on Saturday.

The Tigers have been in top flight early in the season, sitting in second place with four wins. Darren Huitema led the way in the side’s 24-point win last week. The Lions battled strongly but fell to Ingle Farm by 23 points with Joel Regan their best. Brahma looks the goods by 40-58 points.

West Croydon also is blitzing most teams and sits on top of the ladder, taking on Houghton Districts this week. The Hawks crushed 94 points by Mawson Lakes with Jamie Curtis starring. Houghton Districts lost to Adelaide Lutheran last week by 36 points as Cameron Schutz played a fine game. Hard to say anything but a 48-64 points win to the Hawks.

Mawson Lakes and Ingle Farm look evenly matched at Mawson Lakes. The Saints crashed to West Croydon by 84 points with Nathan Delbridge playing solidly. Ingle Farm edged out Mitchell Park by 23 points last week with Nicholas Lynch starring with five goals. The Bulldogs 18-30 points.

North Pines will look to make a move now it has registered its first win of the season.

The Redbacks came through a tight physical contest against Central United with the scoreboard on the right side of the ledger at the final siren, six points up.

The Bulldogs gained a slight ascendancy in the third term to lead by 11 points at lemon time but the visitors lifted again in the last term.

Leroy Boland, Jye Karpany and Karl McKenzie saw North Pines home.

The Redbacks next face Unley Mercedes Jets who suffered their first loss of the year last week against Adelaide University.

It was first win of the season for the Blacks as well.

In a solid performance winning by 22 points, Tom Milton, Duncan McIntosh and Charles Mintz showed Adelaide University remains capable of matching the best at this level.

The Blacks meet St Pauls OS on Saturday. The Saints will offer them a challenge too, following

Adelaide Lutheran and Fitzroy will be desperate to rise above their ninth and bottom places respectively when they meet at South Parklands. The Bulldogs beat Houghton Districts by 36 points with Thomas Youlten handy with four goals. Fitzroy went down to Woodville South by 27 points, Filmon Legesse among the best players for the Lions. Michael Dal Santo, Zebian Serge and Michael Caruso will be out to achieve consecutive wins for St Pauls OS this week.

Salisbury West looked fresh after its bye and discarded Flinders University accordingly.

The Tigers were unrelenting in their 75-point triumph but Steven Wellington, Paul Wright and Shannon Schroeter will get their first test this week in the top-of-the-table clash against Prince Alfred OC.

IT’s a jokeSARAH WAS READING A NEWSPAPER while her husband was engrossed in a magazine. Suddenly, she burst out laughing. “Listen to this,” she said. “There’s a classified ad here where a guy is offering to swap his wife for a season ticket to the stadium.” “Hmmm,” her husband said, not looking up from his magazine. Teasing him, Sarah said, “Would you swap me for a season ticket?” “Absolutely not,” he said. “How sweet,” Sarah said. “Tell me why not.” “Season’s more than half over”, he said.

Home success would be “special”T

o win his first Group One in his hometown would be “special”, said up-and-coming

trainer Andrew Noblet.

The now Melbourne-based trainer is preparing to saddle up his best chance for Group One success in Saturday’s Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville.

He is hopeful of good things from race favourite Silent Sedition who pressed her claims when she won the traditional lead-up race, the Group Three Auraria Stakes (1800m) last start.

Noblet, originally from Adelaide, started out working for leading trainer Leon Macdonald and later became the trainer’s Melbourne foreman before starting his own career in Victoria in 2003.

Therefore a Group One win in Adelaide would be special.

“For that reason it would be nice, but I’ll take a Group One anywhere,” Noblet said.

His best result at the elite level is Sistine Angel’s second to champion Black Caviar in the Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide four years ago.

Silent Sedition has barrier seven but if the emergencies don’t gain a start she will jump from gate five which Noblet believes is perfect.

“She’s had a good preparation,” he said.

“It’s been as good as we hoped for so far. This is the main aim and hopefully she’s there at the end on Saturday.”

Noblet is also hoping stablemate

Super Cash can gain a start in the Group One Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) in which she is first emergency.

Super Cash has raced in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide this campaign and was a fast-finishing third to Don’t Doubt Mamma, who is also in the Sangster field, last start.

“She looks super,” Noblet said.

“She has done a bit of travelling and you don’t know when it’s the end (of her preparation) but I thought her run last start, with no luck, was really good.”

If Super Cash doesn’t gain a start in the Group One, Noblet will run her in the Group Two sprint for three-year-olds on the same program.

Unbeaten filly Abbey Marie is to be given the chance to emulate her elder sister by winning a Group One Oaks.

Abbey Marie’s trainer Mick Kent also trained her sister Absolutely to win the Group One Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick in 2011.

After winning on debut at Sandown in March, Abbey Marie came from last to win over 1440m at Caulfield last Saturday week.

She rises in distance to 2000m on Saturday but Kent says the talented filly is fit enough.

“She’s pretty fit. So whether she genetically can run 10 furlongs or not, we’ll find out,” he said.

Abbey Marie is on the second line of betting at $6 behind Silent Sedition ($5).
