H earing that AFL players are losing their passion for the game, returning

to training in unfit states or getting involved in misdemeanors off-field is hard to fathom for many supporters.

The fans would feel that AFL players have it all with large pay packets and high-profile lifestyles that many would probably desire themselves.

Why wouldn’t they, then, put everything in it?

However, are we disregarding the pressure build-up on today’s players to do just that?

The added requirements to have mind, body and soul right every week, the stresses of public life and being role models, and trying to maintain a degree of a private life, would be hard to balance.

There’s certainly more to being a professional sportsman, or woman, with everything being scrutinised these days.

We hear of Tigers recruit Chris Yarran arriving to preseason at his new club overweight and in poor physical condition.

Crow Matthew Jaensch retires from the game citing he no longer had the focus and commitment needed to play at the highest level and so returned to grassroots footy in the country.

At the same time, other off-field standards were not met by Adelaide youngsters’ Brad Crouch and Rory Atkin as well as the Power’s Nathan Krakouer. There are many examples of these across all clubs.

The top players aren’t immune either with Swan Lance Franklin’s well publicised departure from the playing field late last year for personal reasons including depression, stunning many.

Crows skipper Taylor Walker declared at a season launch last week that the intense scrutiny on AFL players was “not fair but it comes with the territory”. “And you have to work with it – or get caught out. You have to be so careful – and have fun within reason,” he said.

Port Adelaide captain Travis Boak agreed that AFL players “live in a world of constant judgment”.

Therefore, is the game asking too much?

We don’t seem to have the same types of reports being seen in other sports, maybe NRL excluded. But it is not the same in cricket, tennis, golf or basketball to name a few.

Some of these even have added issues such as distance and time away from family with

Pressure build-up

Only a few weeks out from the US Masters, the Australian charge continues to build momentum.

After consecutive victories on the USPGA Tour by Adam Scott, Jason Day has added his name to the winners’ list, taking out the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida last weekend.

Day has now won four titles in his past six tournament starts and risen from third to second in world rankings with a chance of overtaking Jordan Spieth this weekend in the Dell Match Play.

Are we about to see another major victory by an Aussie too?

Australia’s first heavyweight boxing champion Lucas ‘Big Daddy’ Browne is in danger of having the historic title stripped from him after a post-fight drug test.

Browne sensationally tested positive to banned substance Clenbuterol, leaving his future clouded.

He took to Twitter after hearing about his positive test, saying “I don’t understand today’s news, and I’m seeking legal advice”.

The result of the fight is now likely to be changed to a no decision.

international travel, but such concerns don’t arise near as often.

Why is it then, the football codes suffer so much?

The welfare provided to players today is more than has been offered in the past, especially at club level with the continual guidance received and number of development coaches available to assist.

They are well warned about the future predicaments that can fall their way.

The Players Association also works closely with the league to ensure they have more down time away from the game.

Some may say that the players just need to harden up. They are only playing for a short time and the benefits they receive far outweigh those of the rest of us.

There will always be those who struggle in the system though, so perhaps it is up to the clubs that draft them to recognise those players early.

However, players need to take most of the responsibility themselves and accept all that the game provides for them. Taking on a career in the spotlight may have some downsides but the game will offer most players more in return.

3 SPORTSBEAT // 24 MARCH 2016AFL NEWS

L eading into round one of a new AFL season, it has been pretty quiet on the home news front in our two local camps.

Surprising in this media-infused world of AFL football in this State but it is exactly what the two clubs will be liking.

Little fanfare, besides season launches last week that is, allowing the coaches and players to focus on the task ahead.

Both sides will be entering their opening encounters with practically full strength line-ups after well prepared summers and strenuous preseason planning.

All the news will be back to on-field matters from this weekend and that’s the way we like it.

Adelaide travels to Etihad Stadium on Saturday night to face North Melbourne in a tricky first-up clash. New coach Don Pyke is set to take a couple of new players into battle for the Crows with former Magpie Paul Seedsman likely to gain his first real match start in the tri-colours while young draftee Wayne Milera could potentially debut in round one. Mitch McGovern, brother of West Coast’s Jeremy, is also in the mix following promising NAB Challenge form.

The Kangaroos will be boosted by the return of dynamic Daniel Wells who has only played 12 games in the past two seasons with a wretched run of injuries and he could create havoc for Adelaide alone.

The duel of two of the best ruckmen in the competition, Crow Sam Jacobs and North Melbourne’s Todd Goldstein, will have a major impact on the result. The Kangaroos have not won a season-opener in six years under coach Brad Scott so they will be keen to atone for that this weekend.

The Power plays St Kilda at Adelaide Oval on Sunday. Gun recruit Charlie Dixon takes centre stage as many fans hope he fits in well to a re-structured attack with highly skilled Chad Wingard to join him alongside regular forwards Jay Schulz and Justin Westhoff.

Dixon has had limited exposure to matches during the NAB Challenge and it will be interesting to see how the expected increased workload this week affects his ability to run out the game.

It looks a more potent set-up though for coach Ken Hinkley to stretch opposition

Looking all quiet on the local front

defences over the course of the season. However, it will be the Saints that will have Hinkley’s attention this week, which shouldn’t pose too many problems for him.

He does need to be mindful of St Kilda skipper Nick Riewoldt’s usual endeavours to lift his side and the likes of Leigh Montagna, Jack Steven, Jack Billings and David Armitage will always but not damaging enough to cause an upset here.

A big Easter Sunday crowd will be what Hinkley would most like to see to encourage his troops towards a positive start to a highly promising season.

It’s an Easter feast of sport in Adelaide this weekend with the Socceroos, a Sheffield Shield final, the Reds rising to A-League success and of course Oakbank but, most importantly, it’s round one of the AFL.• So who’s been changing the signs around

on Port Road? – the old Crows Corner has unassumingly become the Power Corner – what next in this ‘tit for tat’ rights of supremacy in this State

• Most clubs have had their season launches with fans in the past week – all except reigning premier Hawthorn who’s Family Market Night function was cancelled last Friday night due to “extreme weather conditions” leaving it with 3000 specially made donuts. They didn’t go to waste though, with the club spreading them among Audi dealers in Melbourne to be given to customers for free – so fans then had to go to a luxury car dealership to enjoy their sweet treat and perhaps a new car as well maybe

• Three coaches – Tigers Damien Hardwick, Lions Justin Leppitsch and Magpies Nathan Buckley – are all feeling more comfortable heading into a new season after having their contracts extended in recent weeks, but have the clubs gone too early?

• Demons coach Paul Roos believes a Melbourne-Greater Western Sydney grand final is conceivable in three years

– putting a bit of pressure on Simon Goodwin who is expected to take over at the end of the season, isn’t he? Meanwhile even Saint Leigh Montagna is talking up St Kilda’s premiership chances before he retires which isn’t that far away either – the Saints star is playing his 250th game against Port Adelaide this week

• Meanwhile Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt will become only the fifth player to have captained his club for 200 games in next week’s opening round

• Essendon players are obviously looking for things to take their minds off the pending doom of this season (well, it might not be that bad) – a Bomber tweet was seen this week of Shaun McKernan and James Kelly playing Daytona USA away from the training track with the more senior head of Kelly getting the upper hand, McKernan cited Kelly’s longer distance of travel from Geelong as an advantage – they were playing Intermediate, not Beginners too

• It’s already on the SANFL calendar but it looks like Good Friday could be an AFL drawcard from next year

• While the AFL will allow only 90 rotations during a match this season, the SANFL has reduced it even further to just 60 per match – this change coincides with other rule changes in the local league this year, such as a stricter holding the ball interpretation and a penalty against players for the last possession (kick or handball) before the ball goes out of bounds

RICHMOND V CARLTONThursday 6.50pm, MCG

Richmond and Carlton meet in the opening round for the ninth time in 10 seasons – they played in the second round of the 2014 season. The Tigers have won their past three meetings – their longest winning run against the Blues since 1977-78. Another win would give them four straight against Carlton for the first time since 1971-72. Richmond’s past three wins have been by 12, 27 and 30 points. Their last meeting saw the Tigers win 10.11 (71) to 5.11 (41) in round 15 last year at the MCG. The Blues’ return was their lowest score against Richmond since they were held to 4.6 (30) at the MCG in 1966. Carlton peeled off nine straight wins against the Tigers from 2008-12 – its second best sequence against them.RICHMOND: $1.23 CARLTON: $4.25

MELBOURNE V GWS GIANTSSaturday 1.10pm, MCG

No side has lost more to GWS than Melbourne. The Demons have crashed against the Giants four times already in eight games. Those four wins came on the trot too from 2013-15 with the Giants winning all four by at least 32 points. The Demons though stopped the rot when they last met at Docklands in the final round last year. Melbourne won that game 15.13 (103) to 11.11 (77), kicking eight goals to four after an even first half. The sides have met three times at the MCG. The Demons won by 78 points in 2012 and by 41 points in 2013. However in 2014, the home side had a shocker, scoring just 3.16 (34) while the Giants booted 15.8 (98) to win by 64 points. The closest margin in seven games between these sides has been 25 points.MELBOURNE: $2.35 GWS GIANTS: $1.60

GOLD COAST V ESSENDONSaturday 3.05pm, Metricon Stadium

Essendon is one of five sides (along with Carlton, Collingwood, Fremantle and Richmond) that Gold Coast has played the bare minimum of five times in its five AFL seasons. The Bombers were unbeaten in this fixture – until late last season. In round 21 at Carrara, Gold Coast broke through for its first win against the red and blacks, winning by two points, 14.13 (97) to 14.11 (95). The Suns led at every change and narrowly for most of the day. Essendon drew level with Orazio Fantasia’s first goal of the final quarter but it couldn’t wrestle the lead, despite two late goals deep into time-on. Essendon’s only other game against the Suns on the Gold Coast saw it win by 17 points after trailing by seven at three quarter-time. Kyle Reimers booted eight goals and the Bombers 31 in their first meeting back in 2011.GOLD COAST: $1.16 ESSENDON: $5.25

AFL PREVIEW ROUND1BY DION HAYMAN

NORTH MELBOURNE V ADELAIDESaturday 6.55pm, Etihad Stadium

Adelaide and North Melbourne meet in the opening round for the fourth time and the second year running. They haven’t met since round one last year when the pumped-up Crows crushed the Kangaroos by 77 points, 21.14 (140) to 9.9 (63). Taylor Walker scored 6.5 and Eddie Betts four goals as the Crows piled on 6.2 to 0.5 in the final term. Adelaide has now won four of its past five games against North. That includes a victory in their last clash at Docklands in 2013 – a famous win that the Crows took by one point after trailing all day. Sam Kerridge kicked six goals in that game. The Crows lead five wins to three at Docklands against North. They have also won four of their past six at the ground. One more win would bring their winning record there up to 50 percent with 27 wins and 27 defeats.NORTH MELBOURNE: $1.50 ADELAIDE: $2.60

SYDNEY V COLLINGWOODSaturday 6.55pm, SCG

Collingwood and Sydney haven’t met in the opening round since 1987 at Victoria Park when the Swans recorded their still record winning margin of 91 points over the Magpies. This game is at the SCG which was the venue of the sides’ last clash in round 20 last year. It was Collingwood’s first game at the ground since 2000 and Sydney won by 11 points, 13.9 (87) to 10.16 (76). The Magpies haven’t won at the SCG since that 2000 match when they scored a five-point win. The Swans lead 12 wins to six at the SCG, in stark contrast to their record at Homebush, the original venue for this match, where the Pies lead by 10 wins to three. That gives Collingwood the edge by 16 wins to 15 in the Harbour City. SYDNEY: $1.62 COLLINGWOOD: $2.30

WESTERN BULLDOGS V FREMANTLESunday 12.40pm, Etihad Stadium

Fremantle has won its past four games against the Western Bulldogs since the Dogs’ last win by 46 points in the final round of the 2011 season. Three of those games have been at Docklands where the sides have five wins apiece from 10 encounters. Scoring against the Dockers has been the Bulldogs’ biggest problem in recent times. They have averaged just 68 points in those four games. Conversely, the Dogs reached 100 points in six consecutive wins against Fremantle from 2006-10. The Dockers have been fast starters in recent years, winning their past six opening round fixtures. The last side to beat them in round one was the Bulldogs in 2009 by 63 points at Subiaco. After 26 games, the Bulldogs lead by 14 wins to 12.WESTERN BULLDOGS: $1.95 FREMANTLE: $1.85

GEELONG V HAWTHORNMonday 2.50pm, MCG

Geelong and Hawthorn reprise their Easter Monday opening-round fixture from last year when the Hawks won by 62 points, 17.21 (123) to 8.13 (61). Luke Breust scored five goals while Paul Puopolo and Jarryd Roughead both kicked three. The Hawks repeated the dose in round 20 to win by 36 points in a game that saw Breust kick another three goals, Hodge four and Cyril Rioli six! It was Hawthorn’s fourth straight win in this fixture after suffering 11 straight defeats from 2009-13. One more win would give the Hawks their best run against the Cats since their five straight wins from 1998-2000. Geelong leads overall 85 wins to 72 with one draw and 15 wins to nine at the MCG.GEELONG: $2.30 HAWTHORN: $1.63

PORT ADELAIDE V ST KILDASunday 2.50pm, Adelaide Oval

Port Adelaide hosts St Kilda for the third straight time. The Saints’ previous two trips to face the Power at the Oval have brought them little joy. They lost by 70 points in 2014 as the Power kicked 12 goals to five after half-time. Robbie Gray booted four goals. Last year, Port kicked nine goals to three in the second half to win by 63 points, 17.10 (112) to 6.13 (49) with four goals from Chad Wingard. The Power has now won its past four games against the Saints since St Kilda won by 56 points at Football Park in 2011. Port won nine in a row against the Saints from 2001-06. After 26 matches, Port leads 16 wins to 10. The Power lead 10 wins to three in Adelaide. The only player to kick more than five goals in this fixture for Port is Josh Mahoney who scored six in 2006.PORT ADELAIDE: $1.20 ST KILDA: $4.60

WEST COAST V BRISBANESunday 4.10pm, Domain Stadium

West Coast has won its past four games against Brisbane and five of its past six. Their only meeting last year was in round four at the Gabba when the Eagles won by 53 points, 17.16 (118) to 9.11 (65). Josh Hill and Josh Kennedy both kicked three goals as the Eagles opened with five goals to one in the opening term and the Lions never recovered. This is their first meeting at Subiaco since 2012 – the past three games have all been at the Gabba. The Eagles lead 11 wins to three at Subiaco where Brisbane last beat them in 2010 by five points. This pair have previously met in the opening round in three straight seasons from 2008-10. The first game was in Perth, the latter two in Brisbane. All games were won by the home side. West Coast leads overall 31 wins to 12 with one draw. WEST COAST: $1.03 BRISBANE: $12.00

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 1BY CHRIS KENDALL

NORWOOD V PORT MAGPIES Thursday 7.40pm, Coopers StadiumLive stream www.sanfl.com.au or the SANFL App

The 2016 season kicks off with the traditional rivals, as the Redlegs host the Magpies seeking to gain early ascendancy after last year’s disappointing elimination final exit. The respective game plans will set an early tone here, with rookie Port coach Chad Cornes aiming to counter the more stifling style of Norwood premiership mentor Ben Warren. If either team can break free early and move the ball quickly into attack, it could set the standard and force the opposition into counter measures.

Some of Norwood’s outside runners, such as Anthony Wilson, will really need to come to the fore here, as they were prone to being stagnant in the second half of 2015. Port looks primed for a big first-up effort and if it can extract the best from some of its handy AFL contingent, then it looks well placed to spoil the party early.Tip: Port 13-24

SOUTH ADELAIDE V GLENELG Friday 2.10pm, Hickinbotham OvalTV: Channel Seven

Good Friday SANFL for the two clubs that pioneered the concept and the stage is set for a great contest for the Channel Seven game-of-the-week. The southern neighbours both missed the major round last season but have embarked on different list builds, as South takes a small number of inwards traffic while Glenelg has thrown lifelines to a number of players with SANFL experience.

The pre-season at Noarlunga has been heavily slanted towards building endurance and pace in an effort to press home the advantage of the open spaces of the home ground. This may test a Glenelg effort that has little trouble finding the ball but has lacked some blistering pace. The Tiger attack takes on fresh dimensions with the return of Ruory Kirkby to support Ken Farmer medallist Clint Alleway but their defence still looks a little light. The Panthers look set to begin the season with a home victory.Tip: South 25-36

CENTRAL DISTRICT V NORTH ADELAIDE Friday 2.10pm, My Money House OvalLive stream www.sanfl.com.au or the SANFL App

Two vastly opposing 2015 campaigns to offer a form-line, with the barnstorming preliminary final berth of Central showing considerably more fight than the wooden spoon season at Prospect. The latter reacted swiftly with the appointment of Josh Carr as coach but early indications are a more defensive game style akin to the Daniel Healy era.

Central mentor Roy Laird has some solid young AFL experience at his disposal after a quality off-season recruiting campaign and while appearing a little thin in attack for bigger bodies, the Bulldogs will hope the returning Jacob Templeton can replicate something like his seven-goal trial game haul against South last week. While North will undoubtedly improve this season, this looks too tough an assignment at this stage. It’s the first Good Friday contest to be held at Elizabeth or in the north for that matter so a big occasion awaits.Tip: Central District 25-36

WEST ADELAIDE V ADELAIDE RESERVES Saturday 2.10pm, City Mazda StadiumLive stream www.sanfl.com.au or the SANFL App

The reigning premier will be hoping it has blown out the cobwebs after an indifferent trial game series, although a number of first choice players were missing throughout. It can be hard to line up Adelaide’s form, particularly early season, but the absence of major injuries to the AFL arm should have it close to full strength here.

Much quicker ball movement into a multi-pronged attack was the hallmark to the Bloods’ flag campaign last season and coach Mark Mickan will be mindful of Adelaide’s ability to shut down the contested situations and close down the space for West to move. There will be plenty of pre-game celebration as the home team steps out for the first time since the last year’s drought-breaking grand final victory. But Adelaide appears primed to have the post-match celebrations sewn up.Tip: Adelaide Reserves 13-24

STURT V EAGLES Monday 2.10pm, Peter Motley OvalRadio: Life FM

New blood in the Unley coaching box as Martin Mattner takes charge for the first time for premiership points against the league’s second longest serving one club coach in Eagle leader Michael Godden. Some losses in attack for Sturt will force Mattner to restructure the forward line somewhat and this could add an air of unpredictability to a group that had previously placed many eggs in limited baskets.

The Eagles appear a little slow for leg speed but make up for it with their ability to win possession through the middle and move it quickly into an attack with a number of options. The challenge for Sturt will be trying to bring the game back to a contested situation that allows the likes of the returning Brodie Martin to work to space and move it forward quickly. All things considered, however, the Eagles should hold the edge here.Tip: eagles 13-24

The SANFL Laws of the Game Committee has finalised a cap of 60 rotations per team for season 2016.

Confirming the Last Possession Out-of-Bounds rule and a stricter interpretation of the Holding the Ball rule will remain, the Laws of the Game Committee originally had pencilled in a cap of 50 rotations per team.

‘’The SANFL Laws of the Game Committee met today

to consider feedback from the clubs and coaches during the trial game period,’’ SANFL General Manager Football Adam Kelly said.

‘’In light of the successful reduction in stoppages during the trial matches the ball has been in play for longer periods.”

An average of five extra free kicks per game have been paid in relation to the Holding the Ball rule.

Sixty rotations for SANFL

West AdelaideINS: Zac O’Brien (Brisbane), Trent Stubbs (East Coast Eagles),

Michael Hagan (Northern Territory), Tyson Slattery (returns + Marion SFL), Lachlan Ryan, Josh Ryan (Mildura)

OUTS: Aaron Francis (Essendon), Matt Hayball (Geelong), Tom Keough (Gold Coast), Riley Bonner, Will Snelling (Port Adelaide), Jonathon Beech (Adelaide), Richard Newell (South Adelaide), Andrew Hayes, James Ezard, (retired), Riley Milne (study)

The reigning premier was hit with a number of AFL departures, although not all found significant senior game time in 2015. Ezard’s leadership will be missed, but his past two seasons were injury riddled, while Newell struggled to consolidate a league spot. O’Brien was hotly pursued by a number of clubs and adds class through the midfield, while Slattery’s return was an unexpected bonus for coach Mark Mickan.

The game style seen last season was a significant step forward after years of frustration and while trial form has been very indifferent, there looks a strong case for the Bloods to go back-to-back in 2016. They will undoubtedly need luck in the medical rooms and also be prepared for opponents to have studied their game plan at length over summer. There certainly looks a genuine chance, however, for West to continue its drought breaking run. 2016 PREDICTION: First

Redden (returns – Port Adelaide)OUTS: Fraser Thurlow (Queensland), Sam Martyn (Canberra),

Jacob Templeton (Central District), Dillon Mullins (Sturt), Albert Dunstan (country)

Limited movement in both directions at Oval Avenue but the arrivals bring recent AFL experience and the subsequent high expectations will be the challenge that some other recent AFL recruits failed to live up to. Coach Michael Godden showed his willingness to adapt to changing tactics last season and was rewarded with a grand final berth but that match will have remained in the collective psyche all summer.

In particular, the heavy reliance on Michael Wundke in attack will need to be addressed if the Eagles are to be less predictable when moving into the forward 50. Pace still looks an issue, however, but if James Boyd can return to his ball gathering best after an injury interrupted 2015, this will add further options to work at the feet of Redden. On face value, though, a couple of opponents seem set to go past them.2016 PREDICTION: Fourth

general sportZampa can’t wait for masters of spinA dam Zampa is relishing the chance to

test himself against some of the best players of spin in the world.

Australia will need to trump both Pakistan and India this week to surge into the semi-finals of the World Twenty20.

Both games are in Chandigarh, where Australia expects to play on a raging turner.

Zampa, who was man of the match in the side’s three-wicket win over Bangladesh, can’t wait.

“It’s going to be a new challenge playing Pakistan and India, they’re great players of spin so it’s something that I’m really looking forward to,” the leg spinner said.

“It’s been made quite clear that there’s been pressure on me to perform over here but I’m very excited about playing those types of players.”

Australia takes on Pakistan in a match starting at 8.30pm AEDT on Friday before facing hosts India at 1am AEDT on Monday.

“They’re both going to be equally hard I think. Both have got great spin bowlers, great players of spin,” Zampa said.

“It’s going to be interesting to see what the Mohali pitch is like.

“We’re going to concentrate on Pakistan now.”

Zampa made his international T20 debut earlier this month in South Africa but only claimed his maiden wicket in the format in Bengaluru on Monday.

The dismissal of Mohammad Mithun was followed by that of Shuvagata Hom and Shakib Al Hasan.

Southern Stars out to bounce back in T20

A ustralia has bounced back from losses at the women’s World Twenty20 in the past and will do so again, according to batter

Beth Mooney.

New Zealand, the side considered most likely to deny the Southern Stars a fourth straight T20 title, strolled to a six-wicket win in a trans-Tasman clash earlier this week in Nagpur.

Australia needs to trump Sri Lanka on Thursday (9pm AEDT) (after Sportsbeat’s deadline) to shore up its place in the World T20 semi-finals.

It will be the side’s inaugural T20 meeting with Sri Lanka but the situation is far from unchartered territory.

cricketDiminish Shield in SA’s sights

Well who could have predicted a home Sheffield Shield final for South Australia before last week’s final round of

the season?

Captain Travis Head has led from the front when it counted for the Redbacks, steering his side to this week’s decider to be played at Glenelg Oval, starting on Saturday.

Yes, Glenelg Oval.

Nothing against heading to the Bay – it certainly wasn’t expected that South Australia would be in this position but where has domestic first class cricket come in this country for the showpiece of the game to be played at a suburban ground?

It was once the pinnacle of the summer of cricket.

It would have been worse though if New South Wales or Victoria had won hosting rights with the Shield final to be played in country NSW at Coffs Harbour if the Blues had finished on top of the ladder or even Alice Springs if the Vics were victorious last week.

Fortunately their drawn contest sees the final come to South Australia.

Then also the game is programmed over the Easter weekend which just happens to coincide with the start of the AFL season. No doubt that is why our main sporting venues are unavailable for this clash.

If you can’t get to the Glenelg Oval, disappointingly you will probably miss the action as well with only pay-TV recipients able to see it.

As disappointing as these factors are, we are not going to let it dampen our spirits that the Redbacks are one game away from celebrating

Shield success again. Something we haven’t done for 20 years now.

First-year coach, Jamie Siddons actually captained the side back then and this weekend he will be mentoring the next generation of stars towards an elusive victory.

It was so close to being another wasted season, as has been the closeness of the competition, only five wins were needed for the Redbacks to finish on top.

However, we take what comes and look forward to holding up the trophy in joyous victory by next Wednesday.

As hosts, South Australia has the advantage of just needing a draw from the clash.

Looking comfortable atop the Shield ladder for most of the season, the Victorians have been on a downward spiral, losing or drawing their past three encounters which put them on the road for the final.

However, their last victory actually came in Adelaide, with a comprehensive 218 run win back in February.

Head is in remarkable form which he will again need to produce as will fellow rising stars Jake Lehmann and Alex Ross.

The opening partnership experienced Mark Cosgrove and youngster Jake Weatherald will need to offer something, especially Cosgrove who has been somewhat disappointing upon his return to the side.

Pace bowling stocks look good with Chadd Sayers, Joe Mennie, Daniel Worrall and rookie Elliott Opie but, with the absence of Adam Zampa on T20 World Cup duties, spin might be a slight weakness in the side, although Head will try to step up admirably here as well.

Enigmatic Glenn Maxwell proved a thorn in the Redbacks’ side the last time the two teams met but he too will be missing this week in India with Australia.

“I’ve got no doubts about our bowling attack because I know they’ll go well,” Siddons said.

“I’m really confident about our batting this week though, the way they’re hitting the ball they are about to explode and what a great time to do it.

“I’m pretty confident that we can win the game, whether we’re favourites or not doesn’t really matter.

“It’s not our home game, but it is our home city. Hopefully the whole of South Australia gets behind us as well because that will give us a huge advantage.”

Siddons also said he expected a slightly more batter-friendly wicket at Glenelg’s Gliderol Stadium, compared to the one which allowed his team to beat Tasmania within two days last week.

Fast bowler Scott Boland will be damaging again, especially if the pitch is prepared to favour the home side’s quicks while Fawad Ahmed could become a daunting prospect if the latter days are conducive to spin.

SOCCERComplacency won’t be tolerated

Socceroo captain Mile Jedinak has declared ‘complacency’ as a dirty word before the national side’s clash with

Tajikistan in Adelaide on Thursday night.

He said that focus was fully on getting results from Australia’s next two World Cup qualifying matches.

Ange Postecoglou’s squad requires just four points from its last two qualifiers on home soil to ensure a spot in the next stage of qualifying for Russia 2018.

Most are anticipating the final group game against second-placed Jordan in Sydney on 29 March to be the decisive match to determine which nation tops the group.

Jordan, now coached by English coach Harry Redknapp, is currently two points behind the Socceroos.

However, Jedinak says the Socceroos are not overlooking their first hurdle in Tajikistan on Thursday night. “The fact we haven’t had a game in such a long time with the national team means you can’t become

complacent,” the skipper said.

“Everyone wants to impress again, everyone wants to give it their all.

“It’s how we channel it which is going to be most important. We have to manage the games in the right way, the one on Thursday first.

“We’re not allowed to be complacent. If you’ve been around this environment, that word doesn’t come into it because you are being pushed every game and every training session to be better.

“That word isn’t even in Ange’s vocabulary so I don’t even want to start talking or thinking about it.”

Thursday’s clash is the first time in five years the Socceroos have played in Adelaide, when the home side had a 3-0 win over New Zealand also at Adelaide Oval.

Jedinak believes the redeveloped stadium will make this game an even bigger experience for the side. “Looking at [the stadium] yesterday and taking it all in, the surroundings,

it’s very impressive and I’m looking forward to seeing what it’s like on Thursday when it will be such a great atmosphere,” he said.

Adelaide-born Ryan McGowan is excited about coming home to play in front of the local fans. The defender is desperate to make the most of his return home by helping the Socceroos to a valuable three points.

“It’s great to be back in Adelaide where I’ve grown up and first started playing football.

“It’s amazing 10 years ago I left here with a dream of becoming a professional footballer and international footballer and now the next time I’m back and (I get the chance to) play is for the national team.”

McGowan believes the pristine Adelaide Oval surface will help the Socceroos passing game but expects Tajikistan to employ a defensive game plan and try and hit them on the counter-attack.

The squad for Thursday night includes three uncapped players – now China-based Apostolos Giannou who chose Australia over playing for Greece on the international stage, teenager Alex Gersbach who plays in Norway and Melbourne Victory Jason Geria.

Finals pressure building for Reds

With just three weeks remaining before the finals, Adelaide United can build valuable confidence this week against

the bottom side, Central Coast Mariners.

A couple of victories against the Mariners followed by Sydney FC could create a pre-finals showdown for the Premiers Plate against Melbourne City on the last weekend of the minor round.

But Guillermo Amor can’t really look past Sunday’s last home clash to maintain focus on the finals preparations.

Taking just one point from last week’s contest against Western Sydney Wanderers with 0-0 did little damage to the Reds pursuit of top spot on the A-League ladder too much, although they fell back to fourth just two points from the Wanderers who reclaimed ladder leadership for now.

However, they would not want to take the Mariners lightly to undo their chances taking back the number one mantle.

Despite its lowly position on the ladder, Central Coast took the fight up to Sydney FC in a two-all draw last week, showing great character to pull back a two-goal deficit to achieve that result.

Adelaide United will be keen for tough encounters right up until the finals in readiness to claim its first A-League title. Striker Bruce Djite has expressed his desire for added match pressure as it would prove beneficial to the squad in the long run.

Djite noted how last week’s clash against Western Sydney was a precursor of what to expect for the finals. “(The match) definitely had a finals-feel about it and (Pirtek Stadium) is always full with fans that make fantastic noise and create a great atmosphere,” he said.

“The intensity of the game was finals-like and that’s the sort of standard that we’re going to be up against in the finals.

“It’s a good preview for the finals, but we’re looking forward to Central Coast Mariners, now, and if we want to win this league we

have to get all three points at home.”

Djite also iterated how important the next three weeks were for the club. “These last three games will be when the league is decided. (For us) Central Coast Mariners will be our last home game of the season and they’re a good team,” he said.

“They had a fantastic comeback against Sydney FC last week, so they’ll come here with confidence and (give us) a tough game.

“But as long as we get the three points, we’ll set ourselves up well for the last two games of the season.

“It’s fantastic to be part (of the race for the Premiership), especially considering where we came from at the start of the season.

“The pressure is there, but it’s pressure that we not only accept, but appreciate.

“To take this responsibility is positive because if we were sitting bottom (of the table) still, with no pressure and playing for fun or whatever, it’s not why we play the game.”

It will be a family affair at Oakbank this weekend when Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne joins her brother

Patrick at the picturesque hills course.

Patrick has been a regular visitor to the Easter meeting for a number of years now and will be hoping his star jumper Lord of the Song can make it three Great Eastern Steeple victories in a row on Monday.

Racegoers though will also have the pleasure of seeing his sister Michelle race some of his flat runners over the two-day carnival.

She will also be a guest of honour of the club

A loss to training

Family affair at Oakbank

issued with a one-year ban with half of that penalty suspended.

This week Moody confirmed that he would be walking away from the sport for the “unforeseeable future”.

“It is with much regret and a heartfelt decision that I have to inform you that I am going to recant my suggestion on Friday of where I said I would be back training in six months,” Moody announced.

“After a lot of deliberation with my family and senior management staff, we didn’t feel it was going to be a viable or workable proposition to employ another trainer to care take the stable for the six-month period of my suspension.

“RV worked with us at looking at putting it together, and it would have been possible but I just felt it was going to be very hard to make it workable and do the best by yourselves as the clients and more importantly by your horses.

“With this in mind I have made the ultimate decision that at this point in time I will not be returning to the training of racehorses in the foreseeable future.

“Maybe down the track this is something I will revisit whether it is in 12 months, 18 months or two years.”

After closing down his stables, the multiple premiership-winning trainer will take a break before pursing an alternative career, which will most likely still be in the racing industry.

“I can see myself doing something in or around the industry as it’s the only thing I know how to do,” Moody said.

“If anyone’s looking for an unemployed 46-year-old, who doesn’t know how to do anything else, maybe give me a yell.”

Moody though could yet go out a Group One winner, with two final entrants in the William Reid Stakes (1200m).

Oakleigh Plate winner Flamberge and Danehill Stakes winner Kinglike are among the 12-strong field for Thursday night’s weight-for-age sprint at Moonee Valley.

The race also includes last year’s winner Lucky Hussler, Newmarket Handicap winner The Quarterback, Holler, Japonisme and Churchill Dancer.

with several official duties to attend, including meeting her ever-growing fan base.

Patrick’s best chance could come Saturday with Husson Eagle, winner of the Magic Millions Sprint on the Gold Coast in January, competing in the Oakbank Stakes.

Lord of the Song will contest the Von Doussa Steeplechase on Saturday before headlining the Great Eastern on Monday.

His main competition to preventing a three-peat will probably be Nishiazabu, Spying On You, Undegroundfighter and Mannertone.

He will face all but Mannertone in the Von Doussa as well.

Since capturing the Cup in November, Michelle has been on a whirlwind tour, riding in New Zealand, Queensland and Tasmania as well as acting an Ambassador at New South Wales racing events in recent months.

The 30 year-old is also scheduled to return to Adelaide to ride Prince Of Penzance when he kicks off his Cup defence in the Group Three Robert A Lee Stakes at Morphettville on 21 May.

There will be a different voice heard during a few races over the weekend as well as Australia’s only female racecaller Victoria Shaw adds another new touch to the ever popular meeting.

veryone can go and get stuffed”.

We’ve heard that before on the racetrack.

Now while they may not have been the exact words of trainer Peter Moody, his well-known stubborn nature and distain for the establishment would have him professing a similar feeling as he announced that he would not be returning to training after his six-month suspension elapses.

It’s a great loss to racing to see an exponent of his skill level gone from the training ranks in this country.

So long will we remember the champion horses under his guidance during an illustrious career – Black Caviar, Dissident, Typhoon Tracy, Amalfi, Magnus, Reward For Effort and so on.

Cobalt has shredded a path of destruction through the racing industry in the past year, culminating the suspension of a number of talented trainers of which Moody is one.

It has been a drawn-out process but it has all come to a head last week with the 46 year-old being found guilty of unintentionally administering one of his horses Lidari with excessive levels of cobalt in 2014 and thus

Australian Guineas place-getter Risque will be given her first test beyond 1600 metres when she runs in the Group One

Vinery Stud Stakes on Saturday.

The 2000-metre race for fillies at Rosehill will determine whether Risque steps up to the 2400 metres of the Australian Oaks or comes back to the 1600 metres in either the Doncaster Mile or the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

The New Zealand three year-old joined the Lindsay Park operation late last year and will be having her third start for trainers David Hayes and Tom Dabernig.

She was an impressive first-up winner over 1200m at Caulfield last month before looming as the likely winner of the Australian Guineas three weeks ago.

The filly tired late to finish third behind Palentino and Tarzino, little more than half a length from the winner.

“She looked like she needed the run the other day,” Hayes said.

“She got there a fraction early and just failed to run it out, but was still good.”

Leading hoop Hugh Bowman has some reservations about recent Australian Cup winner Preferment’s ability to stay but

believes the Group One The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens is a good race to see.

Champion trainer Chris Waller is using the $1.5 million weight-for-age feature on Saturday to assess his future spring plans for Preferment, in particular whether to concentrate on 2000-metre races or continue on a path to the major Cups again.

As a spring three year-old Preferment did win the VRC Derby over the 2500 metres, but Bowman points out that his other two Group One victories came over 2000 metres, including his last-start win in the 2016 Australian Cup.

“Even though we thought he was a genuine Melbourne Cup horse, I think that we’ve all come to the conclusion that his premium distance might be 2000 metres,” Bowman said.

Despite that, Bowman believes the 2016 The BMW is the right race for Preferment’s next run.

“The 2400m at Rosehill is hard to ignore, he looks really well-placed there and although his best form is at Flemington I think the race, off the nominations, looks to set up very well for him,” Bowman said.

Hayes tries Risque move

Distance query for Australian Cup winner

Hayes said he would have liked to have given the filly an extra run between her first and second starts, but had run out of time.

She won three of her six starts in New Zealand, including the Group One NZ 1000 Guineas at Riccarton in November.

“She was racing in November in New Zealand, so she was still racing pretty late,” Hayes said.

“She had to have a bit of a break before she started her autumn because she’s got a big Sydney ahead and a big four-year-old career after that.”

Another New Zealander will use the tried-and-true method towards an Australian Oaks win with trainer Donna Logan bringing Valley Girl across the ditch.

After her Group One weight-for-age win in the Herbie Dyke Stakes at Te Rapa, Valley Girl ran fifth in the Derby earlier this month with just half a length separating the first five.

“She had a difficult barrier (18) and got a little bit further back than she needed to be in the Derby,” Logan said.

“There was also a skirmish leaving the straight the first time so it was a great effort.

“She generally races midfield.

“Coming back to 2000 metres won’t worry her. She can handle it wet or dry.”

Logan won the 2014 Oaks with Rising Romance after that filly ran second in the NZ Derby and fourth in the Vinery won by Lucia Valentina.

VRC Oaks winner Jameka is a chance to back up in the Vinery Stud Stakes as well.

Jameka ran third to Tarzino against the colts and geldings in the Group One Rosehill Guineas last Saturday and would be returning to fillies’ grade this week.

Trainer Ciaron Maher said he would accept with her and assess the field before deciding whether she runs.

“If it maps well I’d say most likely she will go,” he said.

“She’s pulled up really well (from last week), she’s nice and bright so all going well she’ll be there.”

Maher said if the decision is made to run Jameka in the 2016 Vinery Stud Stakes it would rule out a start in the Australian Derby to avoid having her run three weeks in a row.

That would see the Australian Oaks as her main target but Maher has yet to completely rule out the derby option.

“I don’t think he has to improve off his Australian Cup win to win the BMW, the only query will be is he going to be as strong at that distance.”

Preferment will be joined by three stablemates in the– Who Shot Thebarman, Grand Marshal and Storm The Stars.

Waller said both Who Shot Thebarman and Grand Marshal continue to please as they progress towards the Sydney Cup while the highly-credentialed Storm The Stars will have a gear change this week after the premier trainer got some advice from the UK.

Kiwi trainer Murray Baker is counting on Caulfield Cup winner Mongolian Khan recapturing his best form in The BMW on Saturday.

Baker saw enough in Mongolian Khan’s fifth in last Saturday’s Group One Ranvet Stakes (2000m) also at Rosehill to press ahead with his BMW plans.

The Ranvet was only the second start for Mongolian Khan since he suffered a serious colic attack last spring that ruled him out of the Melbourne Cup.

Baker sees the BMW as the race to show if Mongolian Khan is back on his game as all his three major wins have been over the 2400m trip.

He also feels Mongolian Khan needs to start in the race to be at his top for the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on 9 April.

Randwick trainer Anthony Cummings was the last trainer to be successful with a three year-old in The BMW and he’ll attempt to do it again, backing up Group One Rosehill Guineas runner-up Montaigne against the older stayers this week.

The stable won the race in 2013 with Fiveandahalfstar.

Montaigne ran second to Tarzino in last Saturday’s 2016 Rosehill Guineas and while that would normally see the 2016 Australian Derby as the next target, Cummings believes The BMW could be Montaigne’s best opportunity to land a major prize this autumn.

“The horse has pulled up the best he has out of any race he’s had so far,” Cummings said.

“It looks probably a more winnable race for him than what the derby may be.”

Montaigne would carry 54kg as a three-year-old and Cummings said the Rosehill 2400m may also be more forgiving than what he would face in the Derby at Royal Randwick.

Scott ready to reverse match play curse

20. Which two geographically close London soccer clubs have not been programmed to play on the same day at home since the 1960s because of police concerns controlling crowd behaviour in the area? Hint: One is a current EPL club and one a recently relegated EPL club.

FIVE POINT EXTRA

Adam Scott is hoping a hot start to 2016 can help reverse a curse that has left

him without a WGC-Match Play win since 2010.

World No.6 Scott has a dismal 3-11 record in the event since 2006, losing his past seven straight encounters, but hopes his dual winning start to the season will help change the trend in Texas this week.

“I’d like to win a match. It’s been a while, it feels like,” Scott said.

“I’d like to turn it around because I don’t really want to get a beat down this week and go home Friday.”

Scott’s recent good run, which resulted in back-to-back wins in Florida, has come despite some major blowouts.

He won the Honda Classic after a Saturday quadruple bogey and backed up to win the WGC Cadillac Championship with two Sunday double bogeys.

But he was unable to recover last week at the Arnold Palmer invitational with a triple bogey and double bogey on the final hole each weekend round.

Despite knowing any such blow up would only cost him a hole this week, he wants to eradicate his mistakes.

“This week it’s a discipline thing, it’s not being loose, not going for too much, playing like I’m back starting from scratch with something to achieve,” Scott said.

“I need to tighten the game up a little bit because certainly if I’m not punished this week, I’ll be punished at Augusta for those kind of errors. It’s an important time of year to be keeping the confidence where it’s at.”

The Queenslander takes on Thomas Pieters on the opening day, who is playing with plenty of emotion as the only Belgian in the field amid the terror attacks in his home country.

Jason Day will kick start the Australian tilt with his match against Graeme McDowell before Marc Leishman tackles American Ryan Moore.

Matt Jones faces South African Louis Oosthuizen and Marcus Fraser is confident of an upset against current British Open champion Zach Johnson.

IT’s a jokeBILL AND MAVIS JUST CELEBRATED their 30th Wedding anniversary and Mavis said to Bill “We have been married 30 years and in all that time you’ve had a locked drawer by the bed, isn’t it finally time you told me what’s in it?”

“It’s just three golf balls and $5,” Bill replied.

Mavis didn’t respond but stewed on the contents for days but finally after weeks of nagging, Bill admitted that every time he had an affair he put a golf ball in the drawer.

Following several more weeks of arguing, Mavis came to the conclusion that it was one affair every 10 years and decided to forgive Bill.

Then Mavis remembered the $5 note and again asked her husband what the money was for.

Bill informed her that every time he got a dozen golf balls he sold them for $1.
