Through Water Communications

Through-water voice communications uses the water to carry the signal much like the way dolphins use sonar to communicate. It allows you the mobile freedom to explore and dive wherever you’d like to go.

Who Uses Through Water Communications?

• Sport/Recreational Divers

• Videographers

• Photographers

• Directors

• Film and T.V.

• Tour guides

• Public Safety Divers

• Commercial Divers

• Military

How to use Through Water Communications …

In most cases when the diver wants to talk, he simply depresses the push-to-talk (PTT ) button located on the full-face mask (FFM) and talks. The diver’s speech is picked up via the microphone installed in the FFM and sent to the communication unit. The speech is then converted into 33 kHz and sent into the water via the transducer. It goes into the water like sonar waves from a fish finder.

The 33 kHz signals out omnidirectional and can bounce off the bottom and surface. When another transceiver’s transducer picks up the sonic signal, the 33 kHz is converted back to intelligible speech, amplified and sent up to the earphone. The diver has the freedom of free swimming without carrying a long wire to the surface.

Push-to-Talk, VOX, Continuous Transmit …

Most through water communications can transmit in different ways. The most straight forward and common way to use your through water communications is by

the push-to-talk (PTT) button.

PTT: This mode is quite simple, efficient, and the preferred mode of divers using through water communications. When you want to talk to your buddy simply push the PTT button and hold while you are speaking. Once you’ve finished, your buddy will do the same to respond. The PTT function is not open communication like a telephone. When one person is speaking, the other is listening.

VOX: This mode is voice activated meaning the unit transmits when your voice keys the microphone. There is no PTT – only voice activated. What’s the problem with this? False transmitting. For example, if a diver is in a panic and begins to breathe hard, he might falsely trigger the microphone and not even know it. As long as he is unknowingly transmitting, no one else can communicate.

Continuous Transmit: The name says it all. This mode is a one way line of communication where one diver is transmitting continuously. In this mode all audible noise (speech, breathing, grunts, etc.) will be heard by others on the same channel and within range. In continuous trasmitmode, as long as you are transmitting, no one else can transmit .

Through-Water Learning Curve

Its important for every end user to realize that with through-water communications there is a bit of a learning curve.

It took the U.S. Navy 3 days to become completely proficient with under water communications.

For this reason it is critical to set your end user up for success by educating them on how to communicate with the best results.

Let’s go over some helpful tips!

Page 12: Sport training powerpoint

Communication Tips• Communicating underwater is more complicated than it seems. The underwater

world is a lot noisier than often noticed. It is important to grab the attention of the person you are wanting to talk. This prepares them for listening. How do we do this? Say the person’s name so they can prepare to listen.

Ex. “Bob, Bob can you hear me?” Yup, I can hear you, loud and clear!”

• When speaking, speak slower than usual.

• Make sure you annunciate when speaking.

• When preparing to listen to the transmission, take deep breaths so as to quiet your bubble noise *note: NEVER HOLD YOUR BREATH

• If the communications are too loud, move the ear unit back toward the base of your head until comfortable volume. You can also change volume via your unit’s volume menu (if you have a newer 2 Channel Buddy Phone or an SSB-2010)

• Remember: You get out of communications what you speak into them. Mumble in, is mumble out.

Using the Guardian FFM.The Guardian Full Face Mask is fun and easy to use. As with any dive gear it’s important to understand how your mask works, how to maintain it, and what to do in the event of an emergency.

Mask Set Up

1. Make sure you have thoroughly looked over your gear. Ensure you have good o-rings and everything looks to be in good shape.

2. Set up your equalizing assembly to fit you.

3. Don mask properly: Yes, there is a correct procedure for this.

4. Maintain your gear.

Guardian Full Face Mask Equalizing Assembly

For a safe and comfortable experience with your full face mask, it is absolutely essential that you set up your equalizing assembly according to your face. We send you different size pads so you can build your assembly up or down.

To equalize, press the regulator against your face and up at an angle. This should allow you to block off your nostrils and clear your ears. If you are having to force this several times to get a clear, you are not set up for a correct fit for you. Keep experimenting until you can equalize with a breeze.

Donning a Guardian Full Face Mask.

Many people think that putting on a full face mask has no rhyme or reason. That is not true. The nature in which you adjust your full face mask can determine just how comfortable of a dive you have. For this reason, please click next for the video to see the proper way to don the Guardian Full Face Mask.

Frequently Asked Questions

• Are all through-water products compatible with one another?• Yes! All through-water units are compatible as long as they are within range

and on the same channel.

• Can competitor communications communicate with your communications?• Yes! Again, as long as communications are on the same channel and within

range it should work. The quality, however, cannot be guaranteed. Ocean Technology Systems is #1 in clarity of underwater communications but if combined with a competitors technology, we cannot guarantee quality.

• How long will my batteries last?• This cannot be figured because it is greatly dependent on how much you are

talking. The more you talk, the quicker you will use up your batteries.

• Are their different sizes for the Guardian Full Face Mask?• Nope! The Guardian is one size fits most. Because of it’s unique double seal,

we typically get a great fit on everyone!
