From the desk of the President & CEO

Hi Members, At the beginning of March, we made the difficult decision to close our doors to the public. We rearranged our normal be-havior of doing business- and switched everything to remote. We had to cancel and postpone a lot of our regular scheduled events. But that didn’t stop us. We were able to connect our businesses through our virtual platforms. We provided immediate resources as we received them and arranged virtual meetings for our businesses to connect. We also partnered with our community to provide webinars. This whole time we have been here for you via telephone and email. It may not be in person, but today we are still advocating for you and your business. It wasn’t easy. Looking back, everything changed so quickly. It was hard and it is still not over. Many emotions have been felt over this pandemic- frustra-tion, fear, loneliness, and panic. It has been heart wrenching hearing our busi-nesses struggle and see so many community events canceled. Despite all of the negative, we have found there is positive. We have overcome the challenges by adapting and changing our way of thinking to continue doing business. Businesses are getting creative and innovative to rise above the current chal-lenge. We are seeing companies revise their business plans and look forward to the future. Distilleries are producing hand sanitizer, manufacturers switching to producung PPE products, companies offering curbside pick up and delivery, live-streaming product sales, and many more creative ideas. Many of the business-es that were slow to move to online sales- they are doing it now. Companies are also taking this time for that renovation they kept pushing off, deep cleaning, creating new products, training their employees, redoing their websites, and pushing their companies and employees to the next level. When we get the green light to start reopening, we will be ready. And now even more important than ever it is time to support local. Support these compa-nies that have struggled and had restless nights not knowing what was going to happen to their company. They need to know that their community will be there when they reopen. Please know through all of this we are here for you. We will continue to provide the resources you need to get through this. We will also be there when it is time to reopen for business. We are still advocating for you and your business. Together we will come out of this stronger!

Meet the candidates for our next election's County and State positions.

The Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce hosted Virtual Candidate Forums for County Commissioner, State Representative, and State Senator Races. Each candidate gave a three minute opening and closing statement and answered questions related to our economy and items that impact our businesses. (Apologies that the first few minutes of the County Commission Forum did not record correctly). Thank you for being an informed voter! And thank you to the candidates for taking the time. Please view these recordings and share.

Did you know on average in the state of Or-egon there are over 7,000 kids

in care? Did you know that in Josephine Coun-ty there is an average of 325-445 kids in care at one time?

Join us in changing the conversation of what saying yes to kids in care in our community means. Saying yes to kids in care does not mean you have to open up your home, it simply means you’re willing to learn, support and educate.

Where were you in 1999? While the world partied Prince-style and braced for

Y2K, Colleen Padilla was graduating from Rogue Community College as Business Student of the Year. Now two decades later, she’s receiving another distinguished honor—the 2020 RCC Outstanding Alum Award, granted by the RCC Foundation. As executive director of South-ern Oregon Regional Economic De-velopment, Inc. (SOREDI), Colleen is a champion for launching and growing prosperous businesses in Jackson and Josephine counties. “As a native of Medford, Col-leen’s love for Southern Oregon is demonstrated in everything she does, both on the job and on the trail,” said RCC President Cathy Kemper-Pelle. “RCC is proud to name Colleen Pa-dilla as our Outstanding Alum of the year.” “My RCC days seem so long ago but I remember the time vividly,” Colleen said. “I was married with three children and thinking how going back to school would be impossible. But I was able to get financial assistance—part grant, part loan—and I was so grateful. I remember crying on my couch when I got the letter.” Colleen soon discovered RCC was the ideal environment to earn a degree while balancing family and other adult life pressures. “It’s a great locally based option that is flexible, rel-evant and forward thinking,” she said. “My experience led me to really un-derstand my leanings and gifts toward management, human relations and ad-ministration.”

Colleen’s success in commu-nity college led her to Southern Ore-gon University, where she completed a bachelor’s degree in business. She now credits RCC for her long-standing vo-cation in economic development. “I cannot underscore enough the value of an internship to open up the world of prospective careers,” Colleen said. In fall of 1998 she com-pleted an RCC-required cooperative work experience program at the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Medford, which at the time was lo-cated in the same facility as SOREDI. This led to an invitation to intern with the SBDC and SOREDI, where she was eventually offered a full-time job in 2001. After a series of promotions, Colleen has now been serving as head of SOREDI for four years. Today Colleen directs a staff of six people serving 15 jurisdictions in two counties. SOREDI also oper-ates a business loan program for gap financing with federal partner funds. The organization makes a daily impact on the economic growth of our region, and many local businesses and fami-

lies have benefited from Colleen’s out-standing work. “Through her work at SORE-DI, Colleen has emerged as an exem-plary leader committed to innovation, collaboration and broad engagement across our entire region, from O’Brien to Ashland,” said Kemper-Pelle. “She has dedicated her career to improving our region’s economic conditions.”Colleen says the feeling is mutual. “RCC is an engaged partner with our community—not compet-itive, but complementary,” Colleen said. “Leadership is phenomenal, and they are not content with status quo. Our region cannot afford to stay the same; they get it. I love that RCC is en-gaged with businesses—because that connection is paramount today and tomorrow.” The Foundation will present the Outstanding Alum Award at RCC’s fall in-service and President’s Circle events in September. The college is proud to recognize Colleen Padilla as this year’s honored influencer within our community and beyond. ###

LS Networks (LSN) has built the larg-est fiber-optic internet network in the Northwest over the last 15 years, pro-viding the very best in internet and phone solutions for rural Oregon and our major institutions i.e., govern-ments & schools. Today LSN is offering the same quality, symmetrical, dedicated internet and unified voice platforms for our commercial enterprise neigh-bors in Southern Oregon. What is fiber-optic internet and unified voice platforms and why should my business look into these services? • Fiber vs Cable inter-net? Fiber transmits data via light, cable transmits data electrically. Fiber is dedicated internet, cable is shared. Fiber is symmetrical, same download and upload speeds. Bottom line: fiber internet is faster, more reliable and se-cure. • Unified Communi-cation platform? Unified Commu-nications as a Service (UCaaS) are cloud based voice/phone services you

subscribe to, allowing for its users to utilize a variety of devices for greater and more efficient collaboration thus increasing commercial productivity including conducting meetings with hundreds of participants. Recently; the Grants Pass and Josephine County Chamber of Com-merce had the opportunity to expe-rience the LS Networks unified voice platform called ASPEN UC, when they were able to meet remotely via LS Networks donating their ASPEN UC platform for the Greeters Business for Breakfast meeting, which had been canceled due to the social distanc-ing guidelines brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. ASPEN UC al-lowed the members to enjoy a joyful hour of much missed social interac-tion we’ve all been missing courtesy of LS Networks and ASPEN UC. For more information on LS Networks telecommunication prod-ucts and services contact Jeff Houston their local representative at 458-658-5215 (direct phone) or email: [email protected].

Physical Distancing … still a MUSTAs a community, we’ve seen physical distancing efforts help reduce the spread of the coronavirus, but we need to keep it up. As the weather becomes nicer, it’s still vital that we continue physical distancing. Please continue to help us fight the spread of COVID-19, and help save health care resources for our family, friends and neighbors who need them most. We will get through this pandemic and be a stronger community for it.

Practice physical distancing all day, every day. Stay 6 feet apart.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
