Chairman, IGBC, AECOM India

It is with a sense of joy and pride that I am writing on behalf of SPA, New Delhi I continue to teach as a visiting Professor, at SPA since 1973. I have been one of the founders of SPA’s MBEM course. Since its inception in 1979, the course has rediscovered itself regularly to stay relevant to construction industry needs of today and tomorrow.

II belong to AECOM, the world’s largest and rated no.1 Consultancy group. I also chair with great passion the IGBC. Therefore, we are able to sensitize our students on the latest trends, metodologies and state-of-the-art technologies practiced around the world- which have direct application for Indian Construction Industry. We have seen time and again that students from SPSPA-MBEM champion the cause of fire and life safety, sustainability and above all, on time delivery within budget allocation, for the projects they are involved with.

They will be an asset to the organization that they decide to join, as has been the legacy of their seniors over the last three decades.

The need for the professional management of construction projects by qualified project managers is a well-recognised fact for achieving the project success parameters. Towards this goal, the master degree programme on building engineering and management at SPA started way back in 1979 has produced more than 600 construction project mamanagement professionals successfully serving the industry.

The programme imparts knowledge and training on technology and managerial aspects of building projects through comprehensive course curriculum taught by experienced faculty. This practice oriented programme with good exposure to real life projects prepares the young architects and civil engineers to take up challenging managerial positions in the indindustry. Sizeable percentage from the program are women who are proving to be successful project management professionals. The batch of students passing out during 2017 is proving to be a talented group and I wish them all the best.

I take immense pride in the fact that I am part of the future young guns of the building industry. The scholars at the program are extremely sharp and immensely motivated. The Masters in Building Engineering and Management program stays true to its name and delivers what it says, it imparts its students a unique combination of Management and EngineeringEngineering thereby creating professionals that are poised to perform in all aspects of the building industry. In the last four years that I have been associated with the program, I have seen students grasp phenomenal understanding of real estate market analysis and have developed exceptional financial models and business cases.

I can confidently say that the students from this program understand all aspects of the real estate industry and will prove to be an asset for any organization that they join.

Focused advance course on Financial Management has introduced MBEM professionals to the study of various aspects of economic and financial decision making in construction business. During the course they have reviewed the classical models of decision under risk and uncertainty for infrastructure projects and confront the models with empirical evidences. TheThe course exposed them to various valuation models for land acquisition, project financing options such as joint venture structuring, merger and acquisition, optimizing public private partnership asset etc.

The school of planning and Architecture has been the pioneer institute in the field of building construction management. The faculty at Building Engineering and Management Department adopt a judicious mix of theory and practical applications which train the students with the requisite skills needed in being efficient project managers.

HeHere students get opportunity to learn not just through a well-designed curriculum but also through active participation in research and industrial collaborative projects. The curriculum is continually updated to ensure that it is synchronized with the current and fore-see able needs of the industry.

InIn addition to the exceptionally bright students, the strength of the department lies in the faculty who have achieved great heights in their own fields. The graduands, not only get fully familiarized with the construction sector but also get inoculated to bring the best practices in management for enhanced performance of the organizations.

In SPA’s two years MBEM course, well qualified young architects and engineers selected from across the country, are imparted training inter alia in almost all aspects of Project Management connected with built environment, right from conceptualization to completion, including planning, execution, maintenance and dispute resolution techniques with ememphasis being on live projects.

These students on completion of the course are bound to be an asset for the growth of urban infrastructure development and real estate industry in the nation.

It was a pleasure to teach the batch of 2015-17 in the subject of real estate management. As a part of this subject the students were given studio tasks like highest and best use studies, joint venture model and financial models of different projects and proposals of Delhi NCR. I found the students enthusiastic and passionate in learning andand often found the observations of the class to be perceptive. They definitely deserve the best in their field.

“The HRM aspect of MBEM course ensures that students become well-versed with soft skills imperative in today’s work environment. At par with global standards, the HR curriculum includes skills such as Interpersonal Communication, Organizational Behaviour, Team Dynamics, Conflict Resolution, Leadership, etc which equip the students with the esseessential behavioural skills, making them adept managers geared-up to lead diverse teams. Beyond the classroom HR workshops put the students under simulated conditions where they experience challenging situations only to apply behavioral skills and measure its effectiveness. They also acquire skills through opportunities which involve hands-on research projects of interacting with HR teams at construction related organizations. TThis rigorous exposure to soft skills ensures holistic development of their personality with the promise of being eligible for leadership roles, and thus be a valuable asset to any organization they are a part of.”
