visitors!!!Reflective$comments$(indicative!length:!500!to!1500!words)!!On!24!July,!2013,!I!visited!the!storage!room!of!Courtauld!Art!Gallery!with!Dr.!Gerstein.!She!introduced!me!to!the!collection;!I!was!mainly!interested!in!the!art!objects!of!the!early!modern!period!(1400:1700!A.D).!The!early!modern!collection!includes!many!breath:taking!art!objects!such!as!Damacian!Mamluke!metal!cases!and!dishes!with!challenging!Arabic!inscriptions,!Iznik!jugs!and!dishes!decorated!with!flowers,!beautiful!Kutahya!Coffee!cups!and!saucers!painted!with!yellow!tulips,!Patanazzi!(Italian)!vases!depicting!stories!from!the!Bible!and!Torah,!amazing!enamel!plaque!painted!in!grisaille.!!!I!spent!the!first!2!weeks!surveying!the!gallery!files!of!each!of!the!above!mentioned!objects!and!discussing!the!objects!with!Dr.!Gerstein.!Finally,!I!decided!to!work!on!a!delicate!16th!century!Ottoman!Iznik!ceramic!dish.!I!expected!that!my!readings!on!Ottoman!art!objects!may!relate!to!one!of!the!texts!I!work!on!in!my!PhD!thesis,!namely!the!17th!century!Ottoman!travelogue!of!Evliya!Çelebi's!Seyahâtnâme,!the!book!of!travels!(1640s).!The!research!I!did!on!the!Iznik!dish,!although!a!century!before!the!focus!of!my!PhD!thesis,!helped!me!approach!the!

$$Reflective$comments$(indicative$length:$500$to$1500$words)$$Among$ the$ nonPacademic$ partners$which$ are$ offering$ a$ placement$ for$ TEEME$students,$I$chose$the$British$Library.$I$thought$that$a$library$environment$could$suite$ very$well$with$my$ research$ experience.$ As$ a$ part$ of$my$ thesis$ is$ dealing$strongly$ with$ history$ of$ book.$ Additionally,$ since$ I’m$ working$ on$ a$ corpus$ of$early$ modern$ translated$ texts,$ I$ got$ more$ and$ more$ familiar$ with$ modern$bibliographical$ catalogues.$ As$ a$ regular$ user$ of$ different$ bibliographical$catalogues,$ I$was$ interested$ in$ understanding$ the$way$ in$which$ the$ catalogues$were$ built$ by$ bibliographers.$ During$ my$ fourPweeks$ work$ placement$ at$ the$British$ Library$ I$ had$ the$ opportunity$ to$ carry$ out$ very$ different$ tasks.$ I$ work$both$with$ John$Goldinch,$who$ is$ the$ curator$ of$ Incunabola$ and$Philippa$Marks$who$is$in$charge$of$the$bookbindings’$collections.$$$My$work$with$Mr.$ John$Goldfinch$ focuses$mostly$on$ the$ Incunabula$Short$Title$Catalogue.$ The$ ISTC$ is$ an$ international$ database$ of$ 15thPcentury$ European$printing$ created$ by$ the$ British$ Library$ with$ contributions$ from$ institutions$worldwide.$ My$ major$ task$ concerned$ the$ updating$ and$ revision$ of$ all$ the$references$related$to$ incunabula$hold$by$Swedish$Libraries$and$ included$ in$the$ISTC.$ By$ using$ newest$ edition$ of$ the$ Catalogue$ of$ Books$ Printed$ in$ the$ 15th$Century$ in$ Swedish$ Collection,$ I$ verified$ around$ 500$ records$ and$ I$ added$updated$ information$ about$ the$ locations$ and$ the$ books’$ format.$ I$ was$ also$concerned$with$ the$ field$ “bibliography”,$ that$ is$ included$ in$ every$ ISTC$ record.$This$"Bibliography"$field$is$often$very$extensive$and$reports$all$the$references$to$a$single$item$in$local$or$national$catalogues.$This$work$gave$me$the$opportunity$

to$explore$various$modern$catalogues$of$Incunabula$compiled$by$European$and$nonPEuropean$bibliographers$ from$the$ late$19th$Century.$By$working$on$ISTC,$ I$also$got$a$precise$idea$of$how$a$catalogue$could$be$built$and$organize$and$of$the$various$ ways$ in$ which$ modern$ and$ contemporary$ bibliographers$ approached$the$cataloguing$of$early$modern$books$through$the$years.$

The$work$on$the$bookbindings’$collections$included$various$tasks.$In$this$area,$I$mainly$ dealt$ with$ the$ bookbindings$ numbered$ among$ the$ Hirsch$ and$ the$Cockerell$collections.$The$Olga$Hirsch$collection$of$decorated$papers,$bequeathed$in$1968,$comprises$over$3,500$sheets$of$paper$and$around$130$books$ in$paper$wrappers$ or$ with$ decorated$ endPleaves.$My$ work$ was$ concerned$ with$ the$inventory$of$Hirsch$collection.$The$goal$was$to$crossPcheck$the$various$pictures$of$ the$ items$with$ the$ information$ included$to$ the$collection,$ in$order$ to$update$and$ enrich$ the$ inventory.$ The$ Cockerell’s$ collection$ was$ donated$ by$ the$descendents$of$the$bookbinder$Patience$Scott$Cockerell,$after$her$death$in$1957.$This$rich$set$of$materials$includes$scrapbooks$of$bindings$patterns$and$a$number$of$19th$and$early$20th$books$(i.e.novels,$ travel$books)$collected$and$rebound$by$Patience$Cockerell.$My$task$was$to$provide$a$ first$description$of$some$items,$ in$relation$mostly$to$their$material$condition.$$

I$ also$ have$ the$ opportunity$ to$ do$ some$ random$work$ on$ others$ early$ printed$collections.$ I$ work$ on$ the$ Smith’s$ collection,$ which$ is$ now$ part$ of$ the$ King’s$Library.$ I$ prepared$ a$ bibliographical$ research$ about$ the$ EighteenthPcentury$Venetian$ printer$ and$ publisher$ Giovanbattista$ Pasquali,$ and$ his$ sign$ “Felicitas$Litterarum”,$which$were$ quite$ neglected$ by$ the$ scholars.$ Pasquali$was$ Smith’s$business$partner$in$the$commerce$and$printing$of$foreign$books$in$Venice$from$1700$ and$ 1770.$ The$ main$ part$ of$ these$ materials$ are$ now$ part$ of$ the$ Smith’$collection$hold$by$the$British$Library.$

The$ work$ placement$ at$ the$ British$ Library$ gave$ me$ the$ opportunity$ to$ get$familiar$with$the$bibliographical$and$cataloguing$work.$I$also$had$the$chance$to$observe$closely$how$a$major$research$library$deals$with$a$wide$range$of$issues:$from$the$valorisation$of$the$holdings$to$the$challenge$issued$by$the$relationship$between$historical$collections$and$the$digital$tools.$$
