Secretary’s Notes Greetings all, according to statistics from 1981 to 2010 from the UK Met Office, April averages for Lyndhurst are recorded as follows: Maximum temperature of 13.5C Minimum temperature of 3.8C Total sunshine of 185 hours Total rainfall of 54mm Days of rainfall 9. At the time of writing it seems these values may be amended by the experience of April 2015 which does appear to have been warmer and not so wet although the last week of April to come looks as if it could make up for the lack of rainfall! The lack of rain, allied with dry weather and sunshine has allowed us to get the cars out and enjoy top down motoring, for those without an MGB GT that is, and the annual pilgrimage to the Arundel Picnic and gathering was no exception. A wonderful day in excellent company. A write-up is included in this newsletter. There was an excellent turnout for the monthly meeting on 1st April with new members joining us again. A good turnout also at the mid-monthly venue, the New Queen at Avon where I believe some members even joined in the quiz. This month we visit The Cowherds on the Avenue Southampton. I will be in contact in advance about possible numbers, as I was for the New Queen, and hope that someone passes the message on!!! At the last count we had eighty-two paid up members and I would ask all those who have not paid for 2015-2016 to pass their subscriptions of £12 each to Clive, Linda or myself at the soonest opportunity or no later than the end of May please.

By the time this is issued we will hopefully have enjoyed a pleasant tour of Dorset as part of Drive It Day on a route devised again by Colin and Jenny Bendall. Well done both and the report is later in this newsletter. May brings even more events with key ones being a tour and visit to the Swanage Railway for lunch on the Dorsetman dining train on Sunday 3rd May. The National MGOC and MGCC Regency Run is on the 10th but unsure if there are any members attending at this stage. The Spring Autojumble at Beaulieu is 16-17th May and I am sure there will be a few members taking advantage. Previously we have had members visit the southwest for the Moor2Sea Run with Exeter MGOC which is on the 24th May this year with the following week at MG's in the Park at Stansted House, run by Solent MGOC. Karen and I will be attending the Rose of the Shires run in Northampton on 31st May as I have been encouraging them to attend the New Forest Run. At the last count entries were at 115 which according to Gordon is still twenty entries up on last year. I think we won over a few new entries at Arundel as well. I have heard we are still ahead of the entry list for the Cotswold Caper, by two from Tamar Valley! Yes remember them as they walked off with the skittle evening prizes last year? Well done to them and we hope to see them again at the New Forest Run, and of course the skittles evening. Let's hope May provides us with suitable weather to enjoy the days out and safe driving to you all. Robin

Editor’s Notes

I started to collate the Newsletter earlier in April whilst at our lodge in Hawkshead, in the Lake District. A warm afternoon, with excellent views from the veranda, I felt a little bit like Angela Lansbury of Murder She Wrote fame! Many thanks to those who have contributed to Mays’ Newsletter, Robin for Arundel gathering and Drive it Day write ups and Jane Kettle for the mid monthly info. Plus photos from Robin and Andrew Kettle. The season seems to have well and truly begun! This should be mine and the Club’s last newsletter as my three month term as interim editor is now at an end but unfortunately no one has stepped forward to fill the role. Can I really stop those keys on the old typewriter clattering away so soon? Perhaps not however, it would be great to have some assistance along the way. The Newsletter belongs to you, the Club Members, I just put it together. With that in mind, please don’t forget to let me have your articles and photos for the June issue

– email: [email protected] I hope you enjoy reading this one Fiona

Finally on photography: I am proposing to put a new banner photo on the 1009 Website this year. With many events looming including our flagship event, the New Forest Run I am looking for members to submit their picture. The pictures will be made available for all members to view and pick their favourite. Fiona

New Forest Run 2015 ~ updates

New Forest Run Raffle - Julie, Pauline & Joy are co-ordinating the Raffle again this year and would be grateful to receive donations as soon as possible. Please bring along your donations to any of our meetings

The Hampshire Hamper - This year Betty will again be collating the Hamper. Remember all items should be sourced in Hampshire ~ jams, pickles, honey etc. all welcome. Please bring your donations for the hamper to a Club Night or Mid Monthly meet.

Entrants: As at 24th April we have 115 entrants, which is 26 up on last year at this time with 15 1009 Members entered.

Post Run Meal – Please contact Adrian if you have not already done so. Consensus seems to agree with The Fisherman's Haunt at Winkton. It is not too far from Somerley and is well placed for those from Southampton end and Bournemouth end. Adrian Mullins, he of Cotswold Caper fame, has agreed to co-ordinate this. The Fisherman’s Haunt can accommodate up to 100 people so should not be an issue for numbers provided we give good notice. I would suggest we should be able to confirm numbers no less than two weeks prior to 7th June but will confirm with Melissa. I will also confirm which of the roasts will be available for that day. Once you have considered can you please direct your intention to attend to Adrian at [email protected]

No Web updates this month however; The external Photo Gallery which will be used mainly for the New Forest Run photos is up and running. Although testing is still being carried out by various members however, I will let everyone have the link very shortly.

Arundel Castle Gathering & Picnic -19th April 2015 Thirteen cars met at the eastbound Rownhams Services on the M27 for 0830. Unfortunately departure slipped to about 0850 due to a problem with an alternator, assisted by procurement by Ian Hamilton of a vital bolt from an RAC van at the services.

Vital repairs at Rownhams! A sunny and traffic free run along the M27 and A27 to Arundel had us arriving just before 10am to take our reserved spot along the hedge line below the castle.

Cars from other clubs were already in place but a steady stream continued to fill all available spaces through the next hour. An additional four cars joined us although one required parking further up the lane past the castle. It did not take long for picnic chairs and tables to be set up with pre-lunch snacks in evidence.

Two new members’ cars came out with 1009 for the first time, Adrian and Rita in their yellow MGB GT and Cathy and Michael in their MG TF160. Dudley provided a selection of pastries on arrival and Pauline Holt provided a Victoria Sponge, all very tasty. Members took advantage of the concession tickets to see the castle and gardens or walk around the town. Fourteen of us enjoyed a carvery meal at The White Swan just outside Arundel before setting off back to the New Forest. Compiled by Fiona and Robin

1009 Drive it Day – Sunday 26th April 2015 Twenty cars met at the Kingston Lacy Estate car park off the Wimborne-Blandford road at 10:00 for the annual FBHVC Drive It Day outing. Colin and Jenny again devised a route taking in the lovely roads and viewpoints of Dorset, including excellent stopping points for comfort breaks, coffee and carvery lunch.

Starting to gather at Kingston Lacy Cars headed out towards Blandford Forum and soon we were into the lanes of Dorset passing the impressive Bryanson School with stumps set for cricket then via Milton Abbas and various other villages before stopping for coffee at The Royal Oak in Cerne Abbas.

The coffee break march! We then headed up to the viewpoint for the Giant with opportunity for a group photo with Andrew’s camera balanced on Tulip’s boot and protected by Robin’s woolly hat! The route was then re-joined passing west of Dorchester then down through Portisham and Abbotsbury and heading down to join the road to Portland Bill where a comfort break and bracing sea air was enjoyed.

The final leg took us through central Weymouth and along the seafront to join the Wareham road to East Knighton and a stop at The Countryman Inn for a superb carvery meal. Well done to Colin and Jenny for a well-planned day and to all those members who came along. Robin

Driving Licence changes: what does it mean to you?

Customers with existing paper counterparts:

Customers with paper driving licences:

Penalty points (endorsements) From 8 June 2015 new penalty points (endorsements) will not be added to driving licences. From this date, if you commit an offence you will still have to pay any applicable fine and submit your licence to the court but the way the court deals with the paperwork will change. For photo card licences, the court will retain the paper counterpart and only return the photo card to you. For paper licences, the court will return it to you but they won’t have written or printed the offence details on it. This means that from 8 June 2015 neither the photo card nor the paper licence will provide an accurate account of any driving endorsements you may have. Instead, this information will be held on DVLA’s driver record, and can be checked online, by phone or post. www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence, by phone or post or www.gov.uk/contact-the-dvla However; you are advised to keep your paper part should you wish to hire a car abroad!

From 8 June 2015, the paper counterpart to the photo card driving licence will not be valid and will no longer be issued by DVLA. The counterpart was introduced to display driving licence details that could not be included on the photo card. These details include some vehicle categories you are entitled to drive and any endorsement/penalty points.

Please note, this does not affect photo card licences issued by DVA in Northern Ireland.

If you already hold a paper counterpart, after 8 June 2015 it will no longer have any legal status. You should destroy your paper counterpart after this date but you still need to keep your current photo card driving licence.

Paper driving licences issued before the photo card was introduced in 1998 will remain valid and should not be destroyed. If you need to update your name, address or renew your licence, you will be issued with a photo card only.

MGF20: August 2015 - this should be a great weekend The twentieth anniversary of the MGF, incorporating the MG TF as well. A national event is planned for 1st-2nd August at the Gaydon Heritage Motor Centre in Warwickshire. Would someone be willing to co-ordinate any interest in attending this please? There may be some interest in attending both days together or singularly. Details are available at http://www.mgf20.info/ with advance tickets available. Saturday is a gathering and on Sunday there will be a run. Please email if you are interested in going along with other Members to either [email protected] or [email protected] Sponsored Slim 2015 Well done to the brave ten who agreed to enter the Sponsored Slim 2015 suggested by David Neave at the AGM!! Due to a senior moment in March where I forgot to bring the scales, I had plenty of reminders from various sources to bring them to the club night on 1st April. Unfortunately our web expert Fiona was unable to make it so we had nine members to brave the scales. I did say it would all be confidential and that is how it will stay. However, we did have two winners in Belinda Neave and Ian Hamilton losing 3.5 and 7.0 Kg respectively. They both kindly surrendered their winnings of the return of their stake to the charity pot. The £50 raised will be added to the pot for the two chosen charities for the New Forest Run. Collectively, there was an impressive loss of 106 Kg. Well done to all those who joined in and maybe we will look at doing a similar activity in 2016.

Our mid monthly meets seem to be growing as you can see from our visit to the Swan Inn at Emery Down, Lyndhurst – we nearly took over the complete pub!

Missed from last month’s Newsletter: Congratulations to Jan & Chris Bitten on their 50th Birthdays and 25th Wedding Anniversary. Some 1009ers helped celebrate with them and certainly enjoyed the cake! Note to self: do not try and eat the real Tulip.

Mid Monthly Wednesday 20th May

The Cowherds

The Common, Southampton, SO15 7NN

Built in 1762 on the site of the old cowherd's house, we were renamed the Southampton Arms for a brief period in 1857 before reverting back to the Cowherds 14 years later. We have maintained the name since, paying note to our heritage and our location - Southampton Common, one of the UK's most important wildlife sites. The Cowherds has open views over Southampton Common, a haven for wildlife, and is close to the university. A walk around Southampton's Old Town will follow the footsteps of William the Conqueror, Henry V and the Pilgrim Fathers.

Mid monthly meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month and are held at a different pub within the Southampton & New Forest Area. There is no format, just an evening to catch up with other members, perhaps enjoy a meal together and chat.

Details of the different venues can be found on the 1009 Web Site Calendar.
