Editors Notes:

Much appreciation goes to Robin for his write-ups on the Skittles Evening, Prizewinners, and the Breakfast and Run and also to Fiona for the latest on the Website and The NFR report. As always, anything at all of interest, please send to me by e-mail at [email protected] Thank you everyone and have a great month.

Karen

Welcome to July’s Newsletter. I wish I could say I’m glad to be back, but the weather since our return has been terrible to say the least, so really missing the Carribbean sunshine and temperatures. Thank you so much for Robin for completing last month’s Newsletter for me in my absence. This month we have got some very interesting tales of woe and experiences submitted by Ian Lemon and also Jeff with their take on getting to and taking part in the NFR. Thank you so much to you both.

Greetings and welcome to our newsletter for July 2019. The monthly meeting at EoB was well attended again and was held following our New Forest Run. We welcomed two new members in Paul and Jane Wallaker, who have recently moved to Lymington having been members at Epsom MGOC. Paul provided the usual one minute of fame about him and his car, an MGB which he has had since new. The mid-monthly was at The Master Builder’s Hotel at Bucklers Hard where we were given permission to park on the Street by the hotel manager and trustees of Buckler’s Hard. A humungous well done to all our members who provided, assisted and participated in whatever manner for our annual New Forest Run this year, as indeed to all our entrants from elsewhere. From feedback received via the comments form and through emails to Fiona and me it would seem we scored another ‘winner’. We are provisionally booked into both locations for start and finish in 2020. Please see the write up from Fiona for the run itself. The pre-run skittles evening at The Huntsman of Brockenhurst was very well attended. See write up in this edition. The mid-monthly this month will be at The Tyrell’s Ford Hotel at Avon on the Ringwood-Christchurch road. If the weather is good, we are allowed to park on the lawn in front of the hotel. Remember this month we have the following activities: Cream Tea at Acres Down Farm on Wednesday 10

th July.

Picnic and BBQ at Anderwood BBQ Site on Sunday 28th July.

And one for a few months ahead in November. Our Autumn Quiz will take place on Wednesday 27

th

November at a venue to be confirmed but most likely The Sir Walter Tyrell at Brook. So, if you wish to join us please get your team of four together and a memorable name and I will add you to the list. There are prizes for winners and losers but sadly, nothing for in-between!!! Enjoy your events this month and safe driving.

More photos are on Shutterfly: use this link: https://fathersdayatstewartsgardencentre.shutterfly.com/ The events calendar is still under construction however if you do have details of an event you would like to have made know to members, please let me know and I will add to the events calendar. I have had some photos sent to me to put in the Members Cars area on the Website however, it was also suggested that perhaps we change the format of this page. Members were suggesting that we have a picture of the car and the owner – as follows:

Finally, don’t forget the photo completion this year – something colourful. Now that we seem to be getting out and about there should be plently of opportunity for some good photographs.

I would then password protect this page so that only members would be able to view. Please let me have your thoughts on this; it may be of help to new members and those of us who cannot place car to owner!

New Forest Run 2019 – Skittles Evening Our annual flagship event, the New Forest Run, was completed in mostly cloudy with the odd light rain shower but without major hiccup on 2nd June. There was a moderate turnout of members with a good turnout of guests for the pre-run skittles evening held at the Huntsman of Brockenhurst. Brockenhurst bristled with MG’s everywhere. Teams included visitors from Northamptonshire, Tamar Valley, Exeter, East Surrey, West Sussex, South Lincolnshire and Preston & District with a selection of ‘Independents’ who sadly have no MGOC abode! Tamar Valley put up 18 bowlers, East Surrey 6, S&NF 14, Northampton 3, Independents 7, with a couple each from South Lincolnshire, Preston & District, West Sussex. In a well contested if not high scoring bowl of two legs by fifty-one people, clear winners for the prizes at stake were resolved without the need for a playoff.

Skittles Team Prize – Southampton & New Forest MGOC

Highest Male – Roger Schofield – Preston & District MGOC

Highest Female – Linda Taylor – Southampton & New Forest MGOC

Lowest Male – John Lack – Southampton & New Forest MGOC

Lowest Female – Alison Colville – Tamar Valley MGOC

The lowest players received a pack of New Forest Seagull Poo chocolates with their wooden spoon trophy.

Wooden Spoon!! Ladies Highest Score The winning gentleman and lady received a carved wooden trophy and a bottle of wine each, while the winning team received a carved wooden trophy for the sheer pleasure!

21st New Forest Run – 2

nd June 2019

Suddenly June appeared, and once again all our months of preparation came to the fore. At East Boldre War Memorial Hall our marshals started the day with a different challenge. They did however, manage to move all the cows that were lying down in the parking area before cars started to arrive and with our full complement of 200 entries, registration began on time with the added aroma of the bacon cooking in the kitchen at the back of the hall. All cars were away from the start before 11am for a run of approximately 75 miles through the New Forest. This year’s route took the cars through some lovely areas of the Forest and I am sure you will all agree that the instructions were once again done extremely well. The finish saw us again in the field at the South Lawn Hotel, Milford on Sea. A live band and cream teas welcomed all. The rain shower was not so welcome but having had some really good weather over the previous years; it was bound to happen at some stage. Hopefully it didn’t dampen the atmosphere too much. It is outstanding that we receive entries from so far afield to both the pre-run skittles and the run itself. This year’s skittles gave us some good scores and although the winner of the top male did say that he had not played before, he did well to beat those that come every year. Well done to Linda Taylor winning the prize for top female. With only one point in it and after many years of losing it was a delight to see Southampton & New Forest MG Owners Club fight off the visiting MG Clubs and win the Team Prize this year. The prizes won on the run day were: Duncan & Will Hughes for best MG Midget, Roger & Elizabeth Schofield for best Modern MG Post 1982, Keith & Julia Howorth for best MG Grand Tourer, Derek & Gillian Baker for best MG Post War Saloon, Paul & Julia Gatland for best modern MG Roadster, Michael & Pauline Ellwood for best MG Roadster and Robert & Christina Taylor for best presented pre-1956 MG also winning The Bert Burgess Trophy. Tamar Valley MG Owners Club won the prize for the club with the most entries this year. Well done to all for making this a successful and enjoyable event but also for supporting our two charities this year – The Rose Road Association and Solent Mind. Special thanks to our Sponsors Solent Bearings and Richmond MG.

Breakfast and Run – Wednesday 12th June 2019 With a weather forecast of ‘will, won’t it’ rain, twenty members gathered at the Wolvercroft World of Plants and home to the Sticky Bun Tea Rooms for breakfast. All had been pre-ordered but the numbers caused a slight problem in delivery. In total we consumed the following portions; 20 eggs, 15 bacon, 9 sausages, 10 has brown’s, 5 baked beans, 12 mushrooms, 16 pieces of toast or fried bread (some had both) and 3 black puddings. Nonetheless, everyone enjoyed their breakfast and six cars headed out for a 30-mile run around the north end of the New Forest National Park and adjacent area taking us into Dorset and Wiltshire.

John & Elizabeth Lack were the initiators for this day although John was called away to Suffolk at the last minute so was unable to attend. The weather looked as if it would hold and so with roof’s down for those who could, we ventured out. The route took as north-west through the pretty villages of Martin and Broad Chalke with superb views of Cranbourne Chase. Heading just north of east we reached Coombe Bissett then headed more south to Rockbourne then up around Whitsbury, Breamore, Woodgreen and via Castle Hill to Godshill, finishing at The Fighting Cocks for a well-deserved drink. The weather stayed fine to keep roof’s down for the journey home. A very enjoyable morning in great company and well done and thank you to John and Elizabeth for making the arrangements.

A Tale Of Acceptable Woe Back in 2012 I got talking to a friend at a summer bbq, in conversation it came up that he intended to sell his MGB as he had found it so unreliable. Two glasses of wine later I found myself searching for my cheque book and the deal was done. A few weeks later I arranged to go and collect the car. It was yellow! I managed to get about half a mile of my journey home covered when, true to form, the MG broke down. The trusty RAC was called and I completed the rest of my journey on the back of a recovery truck. My new MGB was in disgrace and was banished to a lock-up garage. There it stayed for the next seven and a half years. I had no time to deal with it as normal life just kept getting in the way. Finally in January 2019 the time had come to dig out the MGB - in preparation for the forthcoming motoring pleasures that I was/am expecting, I joined Southampton and New Forest MG Owners Club. I promptly and perhaps optimistically reserved a place on the 2019 New Forest Run fully expecting the car to be up and running well in advance of this date. I engaged the services of a trusted and very capable local mechanic who has been working on the car when he has had time (he is extremely busy). He has replaced various parts and sorted various things. We are however now quite close to the New Forest Run date. See photos below!

The accumulation of dust and cobwebs after seven years in storage. A small wasp nest had to be removed from behind the seats! The driver’s seat is looking clean as the dirt and dust instantaneously transferred to my clothes when I decided to sit in it!

This photo shows the MG having just arrived at the mechanics workshop for re-commissioning. His comment; ‘l have seen worse’ I took as a positive. His other comment; ‘I am not sure what colour it is under the dirt’ I took as sarcasm.

Mechanical work complete, the car returned home under its own steam, I spent a happy few hours cleaning, dusting and polishing ready for it’s maiden trip.

Page 14: Southampton & New Forest MGOC Newsletter · 2019-07-01 · 21st Classic and Supercars -Sherbourne Castle Rotary Club ... the New Forest Run, was completed in mostly cloudy with the

Don’t be misled by the above photo. The car is not parked on the drive it is broken down on the drive ! It started first time (much excitement), the engine sounded great, the car managed a three point turn and then spluttered and stopped where you see it ....... a very short maiden trip. I am hopeful the mechanic will have time to sort this present problem in the coming few days in readiness for the New Forest Run in one week’s time - will I make it - I am really not sure. If I manage to get to the starting line I shall consider it a success. If I manage to get to the finish line I will consider it a miracle. So my fingers are crossed for next Sunday,

UPDATE ….. Re: New Forest Run Not only did I manage to arrive at the starting line with the now ‘trusty’ MGB but triumphantly completed the entire route without incident. The journey was physically gruelling because I was smiling so much I ended up with aching cheeks - I must remember to remain miserable at all times in future. The only problem encountered was a flat tyre on the way home. As changing a wheel is within my mechanical range of expertise the smiles continued and we were swiftly on our way. On taking the flat tyre to the garage the following week for repair there was much excitement from the tyre fitter as he noticed that the tyre had a date stamp. It was apparently 32 years old. Although he was impressed by the age he was concerned about it’s condition along with another of the same date. I have now treated the car to two brand new rear tyres and put a note in the diary to check these in 2051 for roadworthyness. Thank you to all who helped organise the New Forest Run, it was a great day.

Page 15: Southampton & New Forest MGOC Newsletter · 2019-07-01 · 21st Classic and Supercars -Sherbourne Castle Rotary Club ... the New Forest Run, was completed in mostly cloudy with the

Thought you may be interested in a tale from today’s New Forest Run Whilst enjoying the latter part of the drive and thinking about the cream teas to come, Gill and I came upon Mark & Gillian Cornwell (& two dogs) in their yellow 1978 BGT, on Lepe sea front with the bonnet up. Their fuel gauge had suddenly stopped reading, but Mark knew he had about ¾ of a tank and there was no obvious petrol leak. He could crank the engine but it wouldn’t fire. We had just set about looking for something obvious when Phil Gatehouse and Sue Brown from Warminster in their 1973 B, pulled up behind and offered assistance. Disconnection of a fuel pipe confirmed that the relatively new fuel pump didn’t appear to be working and the obligatory bang with something heavy didn’t coax it into life either. Phil checked the fuses and wiring connections and everything seemed to be OK, but none of us had a multi-meter to check for power at the pump or any wire to run a separate feed. By now, several MG’s had stopped to offer assistance, but nobody had any spare cable, jump leads or a multi-meter. One driver admitting that he didn’t have one either, but even if he did he wouldn’t know how to use it! Undeterred, Phil hatched a cunning plan. The head of the fuel pump on this BGT was in the boot, so he took a positive lead off one of the rear lights and laid a trail of extension bars from his brand new socket set, across the boot to the terminal on the fuel pump. Hey presto! When Mark turned on the lights, the pump ticked into life. We had at least proved that with power, the pump would run, but the trail of extension bars wasn’t really going to get Mark home to Romsey and Phil probably didn’t want to waive goodbye to half of his new socket set! After some head scratching he hatched cunning plan No.2 – the feed to the rear lights was reinstated and a section of paired cable feeding the rear screen heater was cut out, joined end to end, stretched across the boot and taped on to the fuel pump. Now when Mark operated the switch for the heated rear screen, the pump ran and the engine burst back into life. We weren’t able to identify the fault in the wiring, but hopefully Phil’s ingenuity allowed Mark and Gillian to limp home and we arrived back at the South Lawns in time for the prize giving and just before the cream teas ran out! I want to send a note of thanks to Phil and commiserations to Mark, I think both are relatively new to MG ownership. Their entry Nos. were….. 185 – Mark & Gillian Cornwell 126 – Phil Gatehouse & Sue Brown Jeff
