February 2020

Dear Soroptimists, Friends and Guests:

On behalf of the Conference Planning Committee and members of your Region Board, I am delighted to invite you to “Tomorrow IS Today’s Dream” our 42nd Annual Conference.

Come meet our official federation visitor, SIA Secretary-Treasurer Kazuko Morita of SI Kyoto, Japan Chuo Region. She will enlighten us with the latest news from our federation and help us celebrate the exceptional efforts of our clubs and members as well as our Live Your Dream Honorees.

Join us Friday evening Oct. 2nd for Trailblazers Bunco Bash a fun-filled pre-conference event! Book your room and register early or come for the evening. Members can invite family and friends to join in the fun and Invest in Dreams. All money raised will support our Live Your Dream region awards.

Our conference will officially open Saturday morning, and promises to be an empowering weekend! You will not want to miss our keynote speaker Maggie-Mae Gaughan as she shares her success story with the Dream It, Be It Program and its impact.

The Nominating Committee will present the slate of candidates for our 2020-2022 Region Board. We will hear their aspirations, hold elections, and the installation will take place later that evening!

On Sunday morning, we will be uplifted as we honor nine remarkable women. Our Live Your Dream Award honorees will share their dreams and heartfelt stories with us. As always, we will be inspired by their tenacity, strength, and courage to overcome such obstacles as poverty or homelessness to reach their full potential.

The “Soroptimist Empowerment Zone” features our Soroptimists Celebrating Success Awards displays, Club Giving Silent Auction, International Projects as well as our Region Project.

So, don’t sit around on your Laurels! Mark your calendars and join us for an inspirational and empowering conference October 2nd through 4th at the Doubletree by Hilton San Diego Mission Valley for “Tomorrow IS Today’s Dream!”

With Soroptimist in my Heart,

Governor Laurel Desert Coast Region

RESPONSIBILITIES OF CLUB DELEGATES

Designated club delegates should have a working knowledge of Soroptimist laws, Region Bylaws, the objectives and ideals of the organization, and experience as a member of a club board or committee. An understanding of parliamentary procedure and a spirit of goodwill and understanding will help the delegate, the club, and the Conference body.

The Club President, who serves as a delegate and the leader of the club delegation, should: Allocate time at a business meeting to discuss proposed indices/resolutions and solicit clubopinion or direction. Arrange with the other delegates for assigning sections of the report on Conference to be givento non-attending club members. As soon as possible after Conference, schedule time at a club meeting for delegates to presenttheir reports.

Prior to Conference Delegates should: Study the Invitation that indicates the tentative agenda listing business to be transacted, forums, workshops, and social events. Verify with Club President or Treasurer that Registration Forms and payment have beensubmitted for all attending members in a timely manner. Check in at the Delegates Registration to receive conference materials and delegate credentials. Determine which delegate will attend which workshop, etc. Bring Invitation to Conference, Region Bylaws & Soroptimist pin.

During Conference Delegates should: Register promptly. Wear your name badge so others can identify you and your club. Attend the Delegate’s Briefing as listed in the Conference Agenda. Be on time. Time schedules at Conference are important. Don’t leave early. Guests invited toaddress the Conference body deserve consideration. Attend all sessions and take notes for precise reporting back to club. Vote with the club viewpoint in mind.

After Conference Delegates should: Prepare a report to their club that may include action taken during the business meeting and thereason for each action. Discussion of awards - who won them and why? How can your club participate next year? Present their personal evaluation of the Conference and encourage increased club attendance atfuture meetings and conferences.

school with a gift card for a meal out.

Clubs and individuals are invited to purchase gift cards which will be donated to EOPS* &

other agencies within our Region. Each gift card earns one drawing entry.

*Extended Opportunity Programs & Services

INDEX NO. 1

PROPOSED BY: Desert Coast Region Board

Article III, Section 3.1 now reads:

Soroptimist International clubs and their members residing within the territorial limits of the Region shall be considered members of the Region.

PROPOSED:

That we remove “residing” so that this section would read “Soroptimist International clubs and their members within the territorial limits of the Region shall be considered members of the Region.”

REASONS FOR PROPOSAL:

This would conform to current practices within our Region and Federation. We realize that club

members may reside or work in an adjacent city or county, or they may have relocated and wish to retain

their membership in their original club. This proposal removes the restriction as to where members

reside.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

None

ADVANTAGES:

Clarifies that the territorial limits do not prevent members, currently working or residing outside of

those areas, from joining or maintaining their club membership.

DISADVANTAGES:

None known

INDEX NO. 2

PROPOSED BY: Desert Coast Region Board

Article IV, Section 4.2 now reads:

To be eligible for election to office, candidates must be regular members in good standing. Candidates for Governor-elect must also have served as club president.

PROPOSED:

That we allow an optional course to running for Governor-elect, changing the second sentence to read

“Candidates for Governor-elect must also have served as a club president or as a Region Board Member”.

REASONS FOR PROPOSAL:

Current and past Region Board Members have stated that their Region Board experience has given them

a better understanding of Soroptimists and the operation of the Region, Districts and Clubs. This

proposal would allow a member who has never served as a club president an optional course that may

lead to serving as Region Governor.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

None

ADVANTAGES:

This would expand the pool of qualified candidates.

DISADVANTAGES:

A governor who has not served as a club president is not eligible to run for SIA Board of Directors. The

only eligibility requirement for the SIA Board is having served as club president.

Empowering women and girls lends them strength and confidence to make significant, positive contributions

to their families and communities and aids in breaking down gender inequities for all women. I am a strong

advocate for lifelong learning, and the Soroptimist International mission and vision speak to what I value:

empowerment for all women and girls regardless of where they live and access to education. During my first

two years in the club, other members encouraged me to join committees and asked me to consider serving on

board. I have enjoyed serving SI Poway as a board member and have particularly enjoyed visiting some of the

other District II clubs and getting to know their members. I believe that my experience, strong leadership

skills, and dedication to our core values will enable me to serve the Desert Coast Region effectively as the
