These are my 9 key frames for my creative artefact. My actors andactresses has performed each scene and I took photographs to showthe action taking place. Throughout the production, I selected 9photos that best represented the chronological sequence for my lmand the photographs that I have chosen help to demonstrate a clear

    narrative of the lm.

    Key Frame 1:

  • 8/19/2019 Sophies Key Frames

    3/13

Scenario: ylan, the protagonist, is washing the blood o! of hishands after killing another victim.

Cinematography: "n e#treme close$up is used allowing theaudience to focus on ylan washing the blood from his hands, showing to the audience that he is a killer and that he is dangerous.

Mise-en-scene: The lighting in the frame is high key in order toshow the blood on his hands and highlight the colour red, which isone of the common codes and conventions used in horror lm. Thesink is white in order to show innocence but the red blood connotesthe fact that the innocence has been lost.

Sound: In this scene, there is the diegetic sound of the water fromthe tap running. There will be no other sound aside from this inorder to highlight the theme of isolation within the scene.

    Key Frame 2:

Scenario: ylan and Michael are talking about the killing andMichael is trying to convince ylan to do it again.

Cinematography: " two shot is used to show the two boys sittingon the edge of the bath talking to one another about the previousmurders. Michael is shown to be getting impatient with ylan for notlistening to him and this is seen as he rolls his eyes and looks uptowards the ceiling. ylan is seen to be upset and this is shown ashe is looking down at the ground and is slouching. The shot helpsthe audience see the character%s personalities in contrast to oneanother as seen through their body language and facial e#pressions.

Mise-en-scene: The costume worn by Michael is all black tohighlight that he brings death and danger into ylan%s life. Thecontrast between Michael%s costume and ylan%s costume of a whitet$shirt relates back to &evi 'trauss% binary oppositions theorybecause we see evil vs. innocence. There are minimal props in orderto highlight the theme of isolation within the lm. The bathroom isall white to highlight the theme of innocence.

Sound: In the scene there will be diegetic dialogue as the twocharacters have a conversation about the previous murders thatthey have committed. "longside this there will be non$diegetic eeriescore music playing.

    Key Frame 3:

Scenario: " (ashback scene) ylan is strangling one of his victimsin an alleyway. 'he is trying to get him o! of her but eventually shegives in and passes out.

Cinematography: " point of view shows the face of the victim that

ylan is killing. 'he is struggling to breathe as shown through herfacial e#pression, seen clearly by the audience due to the use thepoint of view shot which is close to her face. The empty spacearound her head highlights the isolation she feels as a victim as sheknows no one is going to rescue her.

Mise-en-scene: To highlight that this is a (ashback scene, I havechosen a 'epia lter to put over the scene to show that it is from hispast memories. The lighting will be low$key to highlight the theme of fear and show the audience that this moment is signicant as it isthe moment they nd out that ylan is a killer.

Sound: There is non$diegetic score music playing throughout thisscene which slowly fades out as the (ashback comes to an end.

    Key Frame 4:

Scenario: " (ashback scene) ylan is crossing o! the faces of hisvictims from the wall with a red pen.

Cinematography: "n over the shoulder shot is used to show thatylan is crossing o! faces of his victims. I wanted to use this shot in

order to incorporate ylan into the shot as much as possible whilestill focusing on the pictures on the wall. The audience are able totell that ylan is the killer as he is the one crossing o! their faces. The use of the red pen connotes the danger and death within thescene. The contrast of the red pen on the white backgroundhighlights the innocence that ylan once had and the fact that it isdisappearing.

Mise-en-scene* This (ashback scene also has a 'epia lter over itto highlight that it is a (ashback scene and di!erent from the rest of

the present scenes. The audience nd out that ylan is a serial killer

in this scene so the lighting is low key to connote the theme of fearand death.

Sound : +on diegetic score music will be played over this (ashbackscene to intensify the scene.

    Key Frame 5:

Scenario: ylan is walking the streets when he te#ts his girlfriend"my to meet him at their usual meeting place.

  • 8/19/2019 Sophies Key Frames

    8/13

Cinematography: " close$up of the phone is used so that theaudience can see that it is his girlfriend he is meeting and how theyhave decided to make plans. The close$up shows the heart thatylan has put by her name, showing that he loves her. "lso, the useof the word babe% shows that they have a relationship as that word

is commonly used by people in relationships.

Mise-en-scene: -igh key lighting is used in the scene to allow theaudience to see the phone screen clearly. They see the name in thephone, making it clear who ylan is going to see and they see thete#ts that the couple send to one another. The close$up shot is usedso that the audience focus only on the te#ts and that there is apossibility that ylan will kill his girlfriend.

Sound : The diegetic sound of the te#t tone will be used to showthat ylan has a te#t from "my. +on$diegetic fast paced music willplay in the background to foreshadow the scenes ahead whereylan kills another victim.

    Key Frame 6:

Scenario: ylan meets "my and hugs her before turning aroundand strangling her from behind and leaving her dead body in the carpark.

Cinematography: " medium shot shows ylan behind "my withhis arms locked around her head. The shot shows her running out ofbreath with her eyes wide and her trying to grab onto him to makehim stop showing that she is shocked and does not want herboyfriend to kill her. ylan is shown behind her trying to strangle herwith a craed look on his face as if he is a di!erent person. Theaudience can see that ylan has changed from an introverted boyinto a murderer.

Mise-en-scene: The lighting is low key in the background tohighlight the scenario occurring in the middle of the frame. The lightfocuses on the two characters ylan and "my and the murder thatis taking place. The darkness connotes the death that will followafter ylan commits another crime. The location is not seen verywell but the audience are able to tell that it is outside through use of

costume as the two characters are wearing coats, something that istypically worn outside.

Sound : +on$diegetic fast paced music will continue to play in thisscene to show the action as "my struggles to breathe and tries toght ylan o!.

    Key Frame 7:

Scenario: ylan is standing outside of the church waiting for

Michael. -e is nowhere to be seen so he calls his name severaltimes. -e begins to panic as Michael is always early.

  • 8/19/2019 Sophies Key Frames

    11/13

Cinematography:  " medium shot is used to show ylan lookingaround and calling for Michael. The audience see ylan%s worriedfacial e#pression, implying that he is scared about the well being ofMichael. This helps display the fear to the audience

Mise-en-scene: The high key lighting permits the audience to seeylan%s face and focus on the theme of fear within the scene shownthrough his facial e#pression.

Sound : iegetic dialogue will be used in this scene as ylan callsout Michael/% multiple times. "longside this, non$diegetic eeriemusic is played in order to highlight the suspense in the scene.

  • 8/19/2019 Sophies Key Frames

    12/13

    Key Frame :

Scenario: ylan has 0ust found his pills and is about to take them.-e wants them to stop the (ashbacks and the headaches.

Cinematography: "n e#treme close$up shot is used to allow theaudience to focus on the pills as they are the most signicant propswithin the scene.

Mise-en-scene: &ow$key lighting is used to connote the fear withinthe sequence. It creates suspense within the scene, as the audienceare unaware of what will occur. The same codes and conventionsused in my two case studies were used in this scene as they usedthe colour red multiple times during scenes with low$key lighting. This highlighted the fear and danger within the scene .

Sound : +on$diegetic eerie music is played in this scene to buildsuspense within the audience, giving them a chance to re(ect onwhat could happen once he takes his pills.

    Key Frame !:

Scenario: " (ashback scene) ylan is sitting on the bath alone. -eis talking to himself. The conversation he thought he had withMichael is repeated e#cept Michael is not there.

Cinematography: " wide shot is used to show ylan sitting on theright and there is empty space ne#t to him where Michael once was.I chose to mimic this shot to highlight the isolation as previouslyylan and Michael were together and now ylan is alone.

Mise-en-scene: The location is rather blank with a lack of props. This in turn reinforces the idea that the character is isolated. Thecolor of the bathroom acts as a 0u#taposition as it connotes

innocence as the narrative tells us that he has carried out a violentact. The (ashback scene has a 'epia lter over it again to highlightthat it is in the past.

Sound : The non$diegetic fast paced music is used again tointensify the scene. The music plays until ylan screams at the endof the lm and it cuts to silence.
