SOFTWARE UPGRADE
PROCEDURE
Introduction
This document outlines the software upgrade procedure for the MicroStar®
IDUs, using the CIT program. When installed on a PC, the CIT program allows you to upgrade the software in any IDU that is part of a network.
Once the download is initiated, the software is installed in the alternate
memory bank of the target IDU.
This download does not prevent the IDU from passingtraffic normally, and lasts about 20 minutes, dependingon the number of links.
When the download terminates, the user commands the IDU to switch to thealternate memory bank thereby enabling the newly loaded software.
Prerequisites
In order to complete a successful software upgrade, the following conditionsare required.
Upgrade Kit
The upgrade kit contains the following items:
1. One CDROM labeled CIT. This disk contains the CIT program that allows you to upgrade the IDU software from a remote site.
2. One serial cable, Harris part number 087-900271-480, to connect acomputer or laptop to the CIT port on the IDU.

1-2 Software Upgrade Procedure
Hardware Requirements
The computer used for this upgrade must have the following hardwareconfiguration, as a minimum.
1. A Pentium II CPU, 250 MHz, 64 MB of RAM, and 20 MB free hard diskspace.
2. A SVGA monitor controller (color or monochrome display).
3. Small font support (1024 by 768).
4. Windows® NT/2000/XP.
5. A pointing device, and a keyboard.
6. Internet Explorer 5.5 (or later).
MicroStar® Network Requirements
The CIT will operate in a heterogeneous network of MicroStar® IDUs. For thetool to operate, the network must satisfy two conditions:
1. Each IDU, in a given network, must be assigned a unique Network Element(NE) address. For instructions on assigning an NE address to an IDU, referto the respective MicroStar® Instruction Manual.
2. The network must be physically wired to support network management. In
other words, the repeater connectors on the IDUs must be connectedtogether. For a typical repeater arrangement, refer to Figure 1-1 throughFigure 1-3. Note that the modem is optional in all scenarios.

Detailed Instructions
To successfully upgrade the software into the target IDU, there are four steps that
must be followed.
• Load the CIT program on the PC
• Connect the PC to an IDU
• Perform the Network Download
• Switch to the Alternate Software
The first step need only be performed once; the remaining steps are performedfor each IDU that must be upgraded.
As an alternative for better performance, you can alsocopy the IDU upgrade software (.zip file) to a folder ofyour choice on the PC.
Load the CIT Program on the PC
In Windows®
:1. Insert the CD labeled CIT in the CDROM drive (here, D:).
2. Click on the Start button and then Run.
3. Type D:\setup.exe in the Open text field of the Run dialogue box, thenclick on the OK button.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the CIT Program in the defaultfolder or a folder of your choice.
Connect the PC to the IDUThe download to any IDU in the network can be executed by connecting the PCto any IDU in the network. The PC can be connected directly to an IDU, or itcan be connected through modems.

1-6 Software Upgrade Procedure
Direct Connection
This is accomplished by connecting a serial cable (Harris P/N 087-900271-480)1 between the PC’s serial port (usually COM1) and the connector labeledCIT on the IDU. For locating the CIT port on the IDU, refer to Figure 1-5 through Figure 1-7.

1-8 Software Upgrade Procedure
Modem Connection
In this configuration, the IDU is located remotely from the PC. The PC’s serialport is connected to the first modem and that modem is connected to the phonelines. The second modem, at the remote site, is connected to the CIT port of theIDU at that site, using a suitable serial cable. For locating the CIT port on theIDU, refer to figures Figure 1-5 through Figure 1-7. As a reference, Figure 1-8 shows a wiring diagram of a suitable cable2. Apply power to both modems.
Figure 1-8: Typical Wiring Diagram of a Suitable Serial Cable
Perform the Network Download
1. Start the CIT Program.
2. When the Connect To box appears (see Figure 1-9), select the appropriateCom port and click OK. If you want to connect to a different IDU, select
Any Site Connection under ESCAN Connection and then enter the NEaddress of the IDU you want to connect to.
If the remote and local IDUs have the same address, then modify the local IDU’s address to be different fromthe remote one and proceed with the download usingthe known address.
2. This DB-9/DB-25 cable must be EMI compliant.

Switch to the Alternate Software
Once the software has been downloaded, the user must instruct the target IDUto switch to the new software.
1. From the menu bar located at the side of the screen, select Administration> Software Upgrade.
Figure 1-11: The Software Upgrade Window
2. The Software Upgrade window should display the software versions thatare currently present in the running and alternate memory banks of theselected IDU (see Figure 1-11). If the information displayed is accurate, continue.
3. Enter a value in the New Value (Sec) box that is different than 0.This value represents the number of seconds that the IDU will count down before it switches to the alternate software. For example, entering a valueof 10 seconds will cause the IDU to count down 10 seconds before itswitches to the alternate software version.
4. Click the Switch to Alt. Software button.

1-12 Software Upgrade Procedure
Once started, ensure not to disrupt this switchingoperation for at least 5 minutes. During this
period, an auto-download is initiated from the IDU to the ODU; this requires that no otherdownload takes place simultaneously over thenetwork. Failure to do so, may cause a downloadfailure and a system lock-up.
5. The CIT will display a Communication lost! window (see Figure 1-12); thisis normal since communications will be lost while the target IDU switchesto the alternate software. Wait approximately 45 seconds. To re-establish
communications click the Retry button in the Communication lost! window. When the CIT communicates with the target IDU, the Running Software Version and Alternate Software Version should have swapped. You can check this by going to Administration > Software Upgrade again.
