In the spring of 2008 Newcap Radio began announcing to Cape Breton that a change was coming. The buzz was everywhere as people started seeing our street team hanging out around the island with signs in various locations all the while revealing absolutely nothing. Part of this teasing process was the addition of a facebook group. On May 27th, 2008 after months of research, planning and testing......

The Giant 101.9 hit the airwaves! Today’s hit music. A new format for Cape Breton.

By July 23rd 2008 the Giant’s facebook group reached 5000 friends. It was then we had to change our group status to an official page to allow the growth of our fan base. Today the Giant has almost 17000 fans.

The information we collect from our page helps us to monitor the demographics of our listeners, percentages of females to males, their ages, the areas they live in, the music they want to hear, follow contesting, tell us about concerts and events that they want to see.

The Giant Facebook Nation allows our listeners to post links, videos, pictures, information for upcoming charitable events, discuss clues, and even find Tashia with her Bag O Schwag before our tuned in listeners know where she’s headed.

1. The Gluttony of Over-Posting

Communication is about quality not quantity. You want to add value to the communities you join, not push, shove or shout your way in.

2. The Sloth of Inconsistency

You should engage consistently. It’s a marathon not a sprint. If you are all over Facebook for a month and then drop off for a month your followers won’t know if your coming or going. The purpose of social media is about being engaged and creating engagement.

3. The Greed of Spamming for Dollars

If your Facebook updates, tweets or posts are primarily geared to your products or services eventually people will tune out. Social media is not about selling it is about engaging in conversation that adds value.

4. The Vanity of Me and Only Me

If you are engaging in social media “ASK” if your posts or updates are actually interesting to someone other than your mom or your cat. Social media is about contributing. Giving and offering advice, insight and information that adds value.

5. Lusting for Friends

Don’t be one of those who starts “friending” with everyone with a pulse. What’s worse? Making what amounts to a marriage proposal on the first Facebook message. Lusting like that can make you seem desperate, connect with people you have already met.

6. The Sour Grapes of Wrath

If you feel as if you’ve been wronged, do everything in your power to resist the urge to lash out publicly at a business or individual. If you need to put your frustration or anger in writing, compose a word document, take an Advil, sleep on it and reassess whether it’s a good idea to post it again in the morning.

7. The Envy of Others Success

Does it really matter who has the biggest following on Twitter? The best articles on the front page of Digg or the largest group on Facebook?

If your passionate about what you do, a wonderful personality will shine through even the fairest wallflowers.

From a business perspective, social media is simply another marketing tool. Before you begin to write know what you are writing about or at least who you are writing to.

In the world of social media, will you write to annoy those who cross your path or will you become a valued contributor and a force for good?
