    THE

    CHALLENGESOF FOODPRODUCTION

By 2050, the global consumption of food will have

tripled to accommodate the world population, which

is expected to grow by 50 per cent. Although

individual consumption will more than double in

some areas, 900 million people still will suffer from

    starvation or insufficient food availability.

When it comes to providing food for the world, there

are a number of critical factors that affect production

including availability of land, accessibility of water

    and sustainability in agriculture.

Only 11 per cent of the planets land is considered fit

for growing crops. Increased occurrences of natural

disasters such as droughts and floods have ha d a

catastrophic impact on the availability of usable land.

Further complicating the problem is soil degradation,

which causes an estimated 20 per cent decline in food

production in the worlds most fertile areas every year.

In addition, the use of arable areas for food growing

has shifted to other activities cattle production and

urban occupation are competing with agriculture.

Smart Agriculture from Hexagon Solutions addresses

these issues with a comprehensive solution that

helps increase productivity, reduce waste and optimise

    processes and resources.

Smart Agriculture covers the entire life cycle of the

agriculture process, keeping farmers abreast of crop

management and production through digital workflows

created from geo-enabled data. With Smart Agriculture,

information and action work together to increase

efficiency and improve crop yields while saving costs.

    THE RISE OF PRECISIONAGRICULTURE

    Adoption of precision agriculture

has changed the way famers and

    agribusinesses see their land. Once

treated uniformly, fields are now being

    micromanaged for higher productivity,

    better margins and lower waste.

    Much of precision agriculture,or site-specific

    farming, has been made possible

    by combining the global positioning

    system (GPS) and geographic information

    systems (GIS). These technologies enable

coupli ng of real-time data collection with

    accurate position information, leading to

    efficient manipulation and analysis of

    large amounts of geospatial data.

    GPS-based applications in precision

    farming are being used for:

    Farm planning

    Field mapping

    Soil sampling

    Tractor guidance

    Crop scouting

    Variable rate applications

    Yield mapping

GPS also allows farmers to work during

low-visibility field conditions such as rain,

    dust, fog and darkness.

    The Smart Agriculture solution combines

    Intergraph geo-processing software and

    Leica Geosystems steering solutions

to build a comprehensive solution that

covers the life cycle of the agriculture

    process. Smart Agriculture keeps farmers

abreast of crop creation, production and

    progression through digital crop

    workflows created from geo-enabled

    data. With Smart Agriculture, information

is collected and analysed, and action

is taken to optimise processes, thereby

    increasing efficiency to improve yield

    while saving costs.

    GPS-enabled equipment keeps track

of which areas have been covered and

which areas still need to be addressed,

assuring that no areas are missed.

    Micromanaging, online sensors

identify targets in real time, feeding

    an onboard computer information

    and assessing whether to act,

    avoiding unnecessary usage of seeds,

    pesticides and fertilisers.

    SOLUTION

Prices of fossil fuels are rising every year

and supply is limited. With a growing

    population, consumption rises and bigger

    and more effective mass transportation

    solutions are needed.

Ethanol has proved to be one of the best

    solutions for renewable power sources,

    lowering environmental impact and

    reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

The growing demand for ethanol in a

    highly competitive market has created

a perfect opportunity for the earlyadoption of precision agriculture,

    especially for sugarcane producers.

    Hexagon Solutions offers a comprehensive

software solution that can analyse data

obtained in the fields to help decide

the best use of land, water, fert ilise rs,

    pesticides, seeds and other farming

    resources to minimise risk and

    optimise production.

High-yield agriculture with optimisedprocesses helps reduce the amountof grasslands and forests that mustbe cleared for farming. This reducesthe amount of biomass burned and thegreenhouse gas emissions that resultfrom such clearings, which helps slowthe pace of global warming.

    THE POWER OFCOLLABORATION

Leica Geosystems has long been a leader

in the machine control field, automating

farm equipment via guidance systems for

    agriculture. By adding Hexagon Geospatials

GIS and imagery analysis capabilities, the

process is further refined, allowing farmers in

the field to fine tune their crop management.

    Powerful airborne photogrammetry

    solutions provide farmers access to

    sophisticated maps that illustrate which

areas have been seeded to help prevent

    over-seeding. This information can be

used to develop a history of the crop yield, enabling farmers to decide how each crop

or area should be treated individually. The

same methodology also can be applied

to water usage, fertilisation and fuel

consumption, giving crops the right amount

of what they need, thereby improving yield

and cost savings while eliminating waste.

Smart Agriculture is helping ethanoland sugar producers increase their cropyield and optimise the performanceof workers and machines, as well asimprove production logistics by designingplantations based on available land, topography and ideal planting time.

    PROCESSPLANNING

    From image processing software that

provides a precise satellite or airborne

    photogrammetry view of land use

    to production planning software with

    sophisticated optimisation algorithms,

Smart Agriculture provides farmerscomplete information to make smart

    decisions. The plantation design can

    take into account topography, water

    usage, plot design, transportation and

    other resources, thereby improving yield

and saving costs with minimum waste.

    During the planning phase, plantation

and autopilot lines are designed with

    the computer based on topographic

    characteristics, availability of resources

and soil. What-if scenarios give the

    designer several alternatives, aiming

    for higher production returns while

    keeping investments.

    PROCESSEXECUTION

    Efficiency and effectiveness are key

    to agriculture management, and

Smart Agri culture enables farmers to

    excel at both.

Autopilot and guidance systems allowtractors and other machines to follow

    directions with precision.

From the soil analysis, Smart Agriculture

    Variable Rate Application (VRA) software

helps calculate the correct amount of

fertilisers and pesticides that must be

    applied to the fields.
