The Collect of the Day

Lord be with you.And also with you.

Let us Pray.

O Lord, make us have perpetual love and reverence for your holy Name, for you never failto help and govern those whom you have set upon the sure foundation of your loving -kindness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Reading Genesis 21:8-21 The child grew, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac wasweaned. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with her son Isaac. So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son;for the son of this slave woman shall not inherit along with my son Isaac.” The matter wasvery distressing to Abraham on account of his son. But God said to Abraham, “Do not bedistressed because of the boy and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you,do as she tells you, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be named for you. As for the sonof the slave woman, I will make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring.” SoAbraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed, andwandered about in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.

Page 5: (SLVFRSDO &KXUFK RI WKH $VFHQVLRQascensionseattle.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Third...Th en God op en ed h er ey es an d sh e saw a w el l of w ater. S h e w en t, an d f i l l

When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes. Then shewent and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; for shesaid, “Do not let me look on the death of the child.” And as she sat opposite him, she lifted upher voice and wept. And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagarfrom heaven, and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heardthe voice of the boy where he is. Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for Iwill make a great nation of him.” Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. Shewent, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink.  God was with the boy, and he grew up; he lived in the wilderness, and became an expert withthe bow. He lived in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother got a wife for him from the landof Egypt.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God's people. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Acclamation Calvary Service - Thomas Pavlechko

The Holy Gospel Matthew 10:24-39The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Matthew:

Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to the twelve disciples, “A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave abovethe master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like themaster. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will theymalign those of his household!“So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up thatwill not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to youin the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops.

Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroyboth soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them willfall to the ground apart from your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. Sodo not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.“Everyone therefore whoacknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; butwhoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven. “Do not thinkthat I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.

For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household.

Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves sonor daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross andfollow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose theirlife for my sake will find it.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Christ.

A Father's Day Prayer

We give our thanks, Creator God, for the fathers in our lives. Fatherhood does not comewith a manual, and reality teaches us that some fathers excel while others fail. We ask forYour blessings for them all – and forgiveness where it is needed. This Father’s Day weremember the many sacrifices fathers make for their children and families, and the ways– both big and small – they lift children to achieve dreams thought beyond reach. So too,we remember all those who have helped fill the void when fathers pass early or areabsent – grandfathers and uncles, brothers and cousins, teachers, pastors and coaches –all the men who reveal your love one day at a time, best as they are able. For those whoare fathers, we ask for wisdom and humility in the face of the task of parenting. Givethem the strength to do well by their children and by You, day by day. In Your Holy name,O God, we pray. Amen.

A Prayer for Birthdays & Anniversaries

Watch over thy child(ren), O Lord, as their days increase; bless andguide them wherever they may be. Presider God of truth uncovered, you trace the sparrow’s flight, and plumb the secret places of the heart: bring our fear and conflict into the light of your presence; help us to lose our hollow life and find our way to you; through Jesus Christ, the master and the slave. Amen.

Holy Communion (adapted from Enriching Our Worship 2) Presider God dwells in you.All And also in you.Presider Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to God.Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All  It is right to give God thanks and praise. Presider: God of wind and flame, your Spirit nurtured life in outrageous diversity; She is with us now, bringing Christ near, filling our worship, guiding us in hope.

Presider.  God of wind and flame, your Spirit nurtured life in outrageous diversity; She is with us now, bringing Christ near, filling our worship, guiding us in hope. From your love andin your image you created us, breathing your spirit into the dust of the earth. Whenwe failed to live in love, you loved us anyway, refusing to let us go. In Jesus of Nazarethyou showed us what we might become. In miracle and mystery Jesus was born, as weare born, and lived as we might live. In the fullness of his life, Jesus revealed the self-centeredness of our lives. So we sought to silence him. But we could not. Theresurrection and ascension revealed the indestructible power of God’s inexhaustiblelove.

On the night before Jesus died he shared a meal with his disciples. He took a loaf ofbread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take. Eat. This is mybody that I share with you. Remember me whenever you eat, and offer your food andyourselves to the world.”

After supper, Jesus took a cup of wine. When he had blessed it, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant of forgiveness that Ishare with you and with all. Remember me whenever you drink, and forgive.”

Now, gracious God, we offer our thanks for this bread and wine, the fruit of field andvine, and the body and blood of self-offering and compassion. We pray that thepresence of your Holy Spirit will sanctify our meal, that we, like Christ, may love, heal, forgive and speak truth to all people. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,

now and for ever. Amen.

Presider  Alleluia, Christ our Passover is sacrificed. All Therefore let us keep the feast, Alleluia.

“Life is short and we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of those who travelwith us. So be swift to love, make haste to be kind.” (Henri Frederic Amiel, 1821-1881)And the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirt be with you this day andforever more.
